The cheesy full-on thread

Recommended Posts

recursion loop    442

Ok, I know that this kind of full-on is often considered to be the lowest common denominator of psytrance and sometimes is exculded from psytrance at all, but I really like it.

Feel free to post your favourite tracks, albums, compilations etc here, everything melodic and euphoric with a strong rolling bassline 2005 onwards is welcome

Some of my favourites

Sorry be to a bit off-topic but I'm not even sure what exactly full-on is. To me ears, it's just an overproduced version of old-school trance. I am missing something?

This is basically what it is: rolling basslines + uplifting trance melodies + all kinds of "psy" squelhes and farts. Full-on is broader than this, but this subspecies of full-on is what I'm currently after.

I love this stuff! In your face melodies, good harmonies and power...

Moarrrrr Ananda Shake please!!!

PS: Recursion Loop I think most of your examples aren't even extreme enough! :P

PS2: can we for once and all agree on leaving the word "cheesy" behind? It has such a negative connotation :(

It should be called somehow   I used to think that it is "morning full-on", but Sonic Species, Zen Mechanics and the like are also morning but nowehere near that melodic (though I like them too). "Pop full-on" may be? Given that "cheesy" in the psy scene often means anything with catchy melodies and not trying to sound weird, scary or evil, I'm fine with that definition.

Great track you posted.

And well, moar cheeeeseee

I don't see how that track is psy-trance at all.

Also, we shouldn't leave the word cheesy behind just because its negative, EVER. Positive critique isnt the only thing that exists or that matters. I see negative critique being deleted everywhere, hell, even some of mine on FB were deleted just because they werent praising some shitty music and that is what is hurting music industry. No, not everyone has PEACE LOVE UNITY RESPECT UNICORNS FLOWERS and shit viewpoint about psy-trance or music in general. When something is straight up bad, its should be voiced and that is what this forum is good for. Filipe wrote on Ivans post on Facebook how this forum is trash because some of us bash around bad releses (even though the guy tried to invade the forum milions of times...whatever hypocrite.) And that is precisely the reason why I think this forum is so good. People have taste, they have the knowledge, they have the age so they were around when psytrance was at its peak to recognize shitty psy-trance. And that is very important!

I don't know if it's cheesy enough, but has all the traits mentioned here - rolling bass lines, uplifting melodies, farts - and I really, really like it when I need something "lighter":

Yes, pretty much

Maybe my favorite:

Not exactly a fan of Talamasca (both his old and new stuff) but this one is nice

I don't see much negative connotation in the word "cheesy" (but I'm not a native speaker so I don't know how this word is commonly used outside of the music context). For me there can be good cheesy stuff and bad un-cheesy stuff. Basically, by "cheesy" i mean something that is more aimed at putting the listener into a good mood rather than tries to challenge his mind (actually there may be a good balance between both of this).

On the other hand, I'm not sure why you need someone else's opinion to recognize shitty psytrance. I think your own ears should be enough for this.

To me it sounds like pure goa rather than full-on (though I haven't listened to the whole album yet) but I like this kind of goa too so thanks for posting this.

Some more great cheesy stuff

The word cheesy has become a "basket" word that is basically an easy excuse for folks with a self-acclaimed exquisite taste to condemn music that they don't like without having to further solidify their claims as to why they think it's bad music (it often boils down to taste and nothing else).

Negative criticism is great. This forum lacks a lot of negative criticism, especially regarding (old) Goa Trance. But when it comes to these kinds of melodic fullon, every discussion is shut down by simply referring to it as "cheesy". Those kind of basket-words suffocate any real discussion.

Edit: of course this is just my opinion, which I expressed as a PS in my last message...didn't wanna make a discussion out of it... : p

This gives me an idea for a thread :) (to be posted a bit later)

Hard Dance, much of it.... Some, Psytrance. The difference is the state of mind!

Cheesy or not - - too much cheese makes you feel ill, like too much sugar.. Maybe too much honey wont? But you will get sticky!!

If you eat a lot of strong cheeses (or much cheese at all) before you go to sleep at night,
you will have more lively dreams.
Sometimes, dreaming the future.

Cheesaedelic
Most of all, youll feel ill.
Maybe even shitting creamy cheese from your ass the next day.

Heard this guy before? https://www.discogs.com/artist/3160163-N-Kore
Calls him self a Hard Dance producer (read discogs profile),
you know EDM. His track is released under "psytrance".

The label he's under released a remix of Yahel in 2016. Funny cover -art .......

Where's the thread Paul Eye? #)

Well, probably my favourite full-on album ever made is going to be Hypnoxock - Synthetic Resurrection. It doesn't reinvent the wheel but it's made with extreme attention to details, the melodies are catchy and full of emotions (yes, more on the cheesy side but in a good way) and the production is so ridiculously good. Since nobody, including Hypnoxock themselves, is making this kind of full-on anymore I can safely say that it is never going to be topped.

i didn't know hypnoxock made fullon before. i actually don't find these tracks too cheesy at all. yes, the melodies are easy to digest, but not nauseating at all. the tracks aren't full of (and don't live only from) corny fullon clichés, so it's perfectly fine music. i could party to this kind of fullon all the way from dawn to sunrise.

I think this is enough for most people here to call a track cheesy :) Actually I'm using this word just to describe certain kinds of music ("cheesy full-on" - full-on with "normal" melodies), without any derogatory meaning.

Btw. Padmapani, didn't you once ask for an Atmonizer version without the porn samples but keeping the main melody? The track Chromosome-Missing Link above is exactly this, just a bit faster :) (Chromosome and Anromeda are the same guy). There are some other weird voice samples in the beginning but they are not so noticeable

The word 'cheesy' is perhaps second only to the word 'commercial' when it comes to being over-used and mis-used when describing music.

As a native speaker I do find 'cheesy' has a negative connotation. It's descriptive, yes, but it's describing something very few people would want to identify with. The word carries some weight.

The way anything with a melody can be described as 'cheesy' is typically a good indicator of how deep someone has actually thought about music. Melodies (including those in full-on!) can be happy, dark, melancholic, powerful, emotional, and yes cheesy. This is specific to song-writing, not the genre.

Whilst good quality melodic full-on is timeless, I am really digging the metallic sounds at the moment. Tristan is in the best form of his career, lots of bubbling sounds, twisted voice samples, and real sharp metallic sounds that fall short of being full melodies but add a daytime or early morning vibe. I particularly like the unreleased track 'The Kitten' you can hear from 1hr55mins here:

Well, it seems that I just misunderstand this word. There is a word with similar meaning in my language (means music or other art with many easily digestible elements, supposedly more appealing to casual people). It may be derogatory but is often used in ironic or neutral context, basically it depends on how much the speakers care whether their own musical tastes look advanced enough.

Here at Psynews, whenever people talk about my favoruite psy acts, such as U-recken, Digicult, Chromosome, Protoculture (older stuff), even Astral Projection, there always is at least one prerson calling them cheesy, as I understand, because of the "normal" melodies often reminiscent of regular trance or other "inferior" genres. Eventually I started using this definition myself when talkng about the kinds of psytrance I actually like the most.

I highly respect Tristan's technical skills and I can enjoy a track or two by him, but without proper melodies it quickly becomes boring to me. I really love all these metallic noices and trippy/squelchy/bubbling grooves but I prefer them to be contrasted by something more melodious.  I guess I'm not a real psychedelia lover but frankly I couldn't care less.

Yet another fine track, imo it has good balance between harsh sounds and euphoric melodies

Btw, all these tracks posted by Blubber are absolutely amazing. But as I understand most of them are made in the early to mid 00's. Shame that I didn't knew much about psytrance at that time, I think if I had been listening to it then I woud have enjoyed much bigger part of the scene than I do now.
