Describe your ideal Psytrance track

Ormion

Recommended Posts

1. Morning/Dark balance

Morning but with a dark side to achieve a twilight feeling. I say 65% morning, 35% dark.

2. Maximal/Minimal balance

100% Maximal :)

3. Trance/Techno balance

Trance actually. But I'd like a bit of the phatness, rhythm and intensity of techno. 80% Trance, 20% Techno.

4. Genre balance

Goa mostly, but with modern Psytrance influences. Ideal balance would be 60% Goa, 20% South African Full On, 10% Suomi, 5% Crazy Dark Forest, 5% Normal Trance :D

5. BPM

Ideal bpm range from 145 to 148.

6. Signature

4/4 only

7. Lenght

I like big epic tracks with many things going on, but not boring stuff. Ideal lenght would be 9-10 minutes.

8. Melodies

Yes! Multi-melodic. Fast, energetic, yet epic melodies. At least two leading melodies. The main melody must close the track.

9. Bassline

Liquid with lot of chorus. Fast, better if it plays a mini-melody that fits with the rest of the track.

10. Percussion Status

Poweful kick, but no annoying. Fat hi-hats. Fat and blasting snares.

11. Intro/Outro

Big, atmospheric intro. Better if it has a nice pad. It must gently prepare you for what is coming. Outro would be perfect with one layer dissapeared after another. Best ending with a delayed sample.

12. Layers

Multi-layered. Lot of madness together with the main synth.

13. Build Ups/Climaxes

Yes, lot of them. 2-3 mini climaxes in the whole track and a big one at the end playing the main melody.

14. Twists/Breaks/Turns/Changes

Yes! I like to be surprised (but not fell off the track). I don't like monotonous stuff.

15. Spoken samples/Singing/Real Organs

A sci-fi spoken sample yes, possibly in the intro/outro or before a climax. Singing NO! Real organs no. Only in Ambient.

Perfect synaesthesia color: Purple-Green

Tracks that fit my description the best:

Christof Drouillet & DJ Mael-KLM

Pleiadians-Family Of Light

Crop Circles-Lunar Civilization (Filteria's Higher rmx)

PS: This is mosly for dance tracks, but if you can manage it you can write about Ambient.

Wow! This is not easy to do. I can name 15 different track that describes each option perfectly. But I'll give it a try.

1. Morning/Dark balance

80% dark/eerie. I don't mean the sound of darkpsy here. Ew!

2. Maximal/Minimal balance

95% maximal

3. Trance/Techno balance

I don't mind some techno feelings.

4. Genre balance

90% South African, 10% something else.

5. BPM

140-148

6. Signature

4/4 only

7. Lenght

I don't care if the track is 5mins or 10mins. If it's carefully done it doesn't matter.

8. Melodies

Yes, please. I like them noisy and screamy.

9. Bassline

Hard. With variation during the track. Playfull.

10. Percussion Status

Poweful kick. Fat hi-hats. I don't mind the snares being exchanged for some sfx that sounds almost like a snare or a nice fat CLAP.

11. Intro/Outro

Noisy. They can be "breakish". I'm not a huge fan of big atmospheric bore-fest-intros.

12. Layers

Bring it on! Lots of screamy stuff going on. Doesn't necessarily have to be layers with melodies(?).

13. Build Ups/Climaxes

1-2. The end climax should not be a re-used (layered over something to make it sound fatter) version of a melody previously used in the same track. Altho, there can be hints of the melody.

14. Twists/Breaks/Turns/Changes

Fuck yeah! Make something unexpected.

15. Spoken samples/Singing/Real Organs

No singing. Real organs, sure. Keep spoken samples down and carefully chosen.

Perfect synaesthesia color: what?

Tracks that fit my description the best:

Artifakt - Gather

Artifakt - Viagra Bastard Spawn

Artifakt - The Magus

Am a bit too lazy to write it in sections so imagine mixing midi miliz and the delta's send in send back with khetzal(only darker) and nuclear ramjet's age of acuarius(the album), adding some ambient drones(a la wiese & co or maybe some darker ambient) and changing the time signature to 5/4 or 7/4. And making it good.

1. Morning/Dark balance

morning

2. Maximal/Minimal balance

75% minimal, 25% maximal

3. Trance/Techno balance

rather more trance elements, but not of the overplayed crappy emo kind ... I'd say 2/3 trance, 1/3 techno

4. Genre balance

70% progressive, 20% house, 10% psy

5. BPM

around 140

6. Signature

surprise me! or not. not important. 4/4 is okay

7. Length

around 8 to 10 minutes

8. Melodies

Yes, please - but simple ones! Not much complexity, rather play with hidden melodies or melodies inside melodies, I love that. They should be simple and minimalistically crafted though. Best if the melodies themselves actually are ambient melodies (also played by an ambient synth and pad effects), just underlined with the bassline and kick...

9. Bassline

rather sharp and driving, please

10. Percussion Status

no sharp kick, rather dampen the kick a little ... but not too much...

not too much focus on hihats either

11. Intro/Outro

Intro rather short. Ambient pads and synth usage in the outro please. Bassline can after-resonate aswell. Magnetrixx - Gluonball has a wonderful outro...

12. Layers

less is more, although I'd beg for a few well hidden ones

13. Build Ups/Climaxes

not needed and if there are then no big ones please, more smaller ones are okay, more variety...

14. Twists/Breaks/Turns/Changes

not too much please, a little is okay, I also like developing tracks

15. Spoken samples/Singing/Real Organs

No real organs. Singing mostly ruins the track aswell, only fits on rare occasions. Spoken samples are okay, especially in a sci-fi or philosophical way. No drug madness stupidity please.

Perfect synaesthesia color: blue-purple-red

Tracks that fit my description the best:

S-Range - Larger Plan

S-Range - Morning Star

Matenda - Perspectives

Matenda - Lipo Mare

Matenda - No Return

Noma - Soon

Atmos - Fill The Hat

Etnoscope - Cloud Surfing

Son Kite - Aiwana

ANY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ME?

(don't say Human Blue now, I know that already ^_^ )

Perfect synaesthesia color: what?

I mean the color/colors you 'see' when you listen to music. Which one you prefer the most? I personally love when I get a purple color in a psy track.

Some XV Kilist maybe?

I think the thread should be open for generall descriptions and not a forumula to be followed.

I believe that these 15 options can describe perfectly a track. I just divided in 15 categories to be more specific about each individual thing.

But if you don't like the formula you can describe it as you want.

I listen to psytrance mainly for the adrenaline rush. So I like fast, gritty and intense tracks, with catchy melodies and a rhythm that maintains its groove, and with prominent, honest elements as opposed to too many that are all swirling around without purpose. In that way I enjoy my trance more on the tech-ish side than the psychedelic.

Both of these are near perfect for me:

Man With No Name Presents Yogy and Gray One - Big Trouble in Outer Space (Oforia Remix): Love, love, love the instensity, clarity and grit of this track. From the Pigs in Space album.

Ka-Sol - Pricken: One to make the heart race and palms sweat. From the Tales from the Dark Forest comp.

And in general, as few samples as possible is good, unless they're unique and not taken from Hollywood. Definitely much more serious than happy is good, I hate any kind of humor involved, and the horror stuff I find largely goofy. And then it's got to be a journey; it has to lift me off the ground and take me somewhere.

why instead of whining around, wont you just post how your perfect psytrance track would be, without using the given formulas at hand? :drama:

I have to agree. I hate when a serious track gets ruined by a comedy sample. If the track is funny itself (suomi etc.) then ok, otherwise I don't like it.

1. Morning/Dark balance

70% dark, but deep dark not shit dark.

2. Maximal/Minimal balance

50% minimal but with a lot of subtlety hidden underneath

3. Trance/Techno balance

Rhythmical but entrancing. 50/50

4. Genre balance

Psytrance, techno, ambient mixed in together.

5. BPM

140~146

6. Signature

4/4

7. Lenght

Epic, if it can go on for 30 minutes then do it! If not then 15 minutes will do ;)

8. Melodies

Subtle

9. Bassline

Must move! Must move like a melody! Must not take over the track.

10. Percussion Status

Sub beats under a steady beat that misses every 12th, 16th or 20th beat.

11. Intro/Outro

Long & ambient building/falling slowly

12. Layers

Multi-layered. lots of craziness but must be subtle layers

13. Build Ups/Climaxes

One or two only & should build up over a long time. The first should build up & then kick off with less energy than the buld up, the second should just go nuts.

14. Twists/Breaks/Turns/Changes

I like my changes to either be really quick or really slow. One of each please.

15. Spoken samples/Singing/Real Organs

No! Samples can be good but the perfect track doesn't need one.

Perfect synaesthesia color: Gun metal grey.

Tracks that fit my description the best:

Stuff on FRR 1996 to 2001

Black Rhino

Live In Germany

1. Morning/Dark balance

Little of this, little of that.

2. Maximal/Minimal balance

100%maximal

3. Trance/Techno balance

Don't understand this question..

4. Genre balance

40% modern psy, 40% darkpsy, 20% originality and madness

5. BPM

140-150

6. Signature

?

7. Lenght

Don't care as long as it's over 6 minutes

8. Melodies

Wierd melodies... Off-pitch melodies... Simple but effective melodies... Don't like the big goa melodies like Pleaidians and so...

9. Bassline

Deep, phat and pounding... Don't mind if it's playfull, but as long as it's driving and phat, i don't care if it's monotonious.

10. Percussion Status

Poweful kick that drags, pitch and play in the breaks. Some fast percussion and hihats, but it shouldn't sound to "real". I like the mechanical sound for drums.

11. Intro/Outro

Don't care... It can be nice with a good intro to set the mood of the rest of the track/story, but it can be done brilliant without it.

12. Layers

Never realized what you mean by layers, but if it is alot of synths on top of eachother(Like a lead, a deep growling synth, tweaky synths and alot of pads and soundeffects at the same time, then YES PLEASE :D

13. Build Ups/Climaxes

Build ups is nice, but i like tracks where you just get sucked in, like it's building up all the way through the track, constantly changing layers, changing small things, so it turns into a big difference, and i like tracks to be surprising, so you don't allways see whats comming (like you do with a climax for instance).

14. Twists/Breaks/Turns/Changes

Yes!!!!! Alot of twists and changes.. But so you still have the same feeling through out the track.. Like your beeing thrown around in another dimension (but the same dimension of course)

15. Spoken samples/Singing/Real Organs

Voices that says wierd, funny or creapy stuff, yes :) Don't like singing, and don't like idiotic samples that have no meaningful place in the track.

Perfect synaesthesia color: Black and read(don't know what you mean, but these colors descripe my taste in the ideal psytrance track(not talkin progressive or ambient here)

Tracks that fit my description the best:

Penta-Perfect sunday

PS: This is descriping my ideal PSYTRANCE track.. It has nothing to do with the rest of my taste in electronic music.

No! Some people (like me) "Suffer" from synaesthesia see colours whenever they hear music (or anything in my case)

Nothing to do with drugs

Okay, let me re-phrase it then... NORMAL people don't see colors when listening to music, except if you have done some psychedelics(and that is only if you are lucky, i've never tried it :( )

nyways, it must be a cool disorder to have... I envy you :)

How does the color show? In the air, or do things turn purple(for example) or what happens? I've read about synesthesia, but it didn't explain exactly what happens, except it's a "disease" that makes the persons senses blend in on each other, like a particular smell when you see a item, or like you say: colors when listening to music.

Interesting thread

1. Morning/Dark balance

Not entirely dark, but also uplifting and happy a bit too, although very much sinister/darkness too, however as mentioned needs some happyness. 65% dark 35% light. Something like TIP-hyperspaced/world of the acid dealer, or mfg magnetic activity.

2. Maximal/Minimal balance

70% maximal. Good use of melodies, and more memorable and nice use of them. Like transwave.

3. Trance/Techno balance

Techno is much harder to get wrong (well from what I've heard) however, trance can go that little bit further. 80% trance, 20% techno.

4. Genre balance

Goa/forest psy. Bamboo forest-cliche'h perfect here.

5. BPM

140-155

6. Signature

4/4, although 3/4 can be great too, and I'm sure 5/4 is quite interesting. IDK though about in psy though, I'd have to hear examples. Probably doesn't matter though. Theres plenty of interest left in 4/4, and other time signatures can be good too.

7. Lenght

Normally 7-9 minutes, but for the perfect track standout track, 9 and a half to 11. Really though, this could be the most killer epic track or the most killer boring/intro (well not boring, but sounds as if not much is happening... which ofc has an art too it to, and there are so absolutely magnificent examples of this so for building energy in a set or an intro an an album)

8. Melodies

A cross between transwave and etnica, a few super uplfiting melodies that get repeated, but with tons of other stuff going on as well.

9. Bassline

A very nice bassline that stands out just with the eqs that creates energy(so morning psyey bassline). However kind've does the odd 16th note at the end of a phrase etc, as well as maybe changes a bit during the course of the song.

10. Percussion Status

Mid heavey/punchey kick.

11. Intro/Outro

Outro will be feature a really nice classic trancey pad, playing 3 notes that will fit in absolutely brilliantly with the rest of the song, and make it all make sense and epic (have a look at sourmash-the blessing... oh my fucking god). I can't give specifics on intro...

12. Layers

See my melody thoughts. A few layers of percussion like in techno wouldn't be bad either.

13. Build Ups/Climaxes

It's a 9 and a half to 11 minute track. Have a look at phreaky over the moon. That has at least 5 breakdowns, with several climaxes and one mega climax. I'd expect similar.

14. Twists/Breaks/Turns/Changes

Thats kinda similar to the last. The track should evolve, but have brilliant flow. There will be an absolutely awesome pad that comes in about 10 mins in (ok lets assume its 11 minutes long then) with a re emergence and emphasis of the main melody, and a quick and sad outro. There will be a new melody that somewhat changes the mood of the song at 5 minutes, and 7 minutes will change it back again... about 2 minutes later the track will finally conclude with a massive climax.

15. Spoken samples/Singing/Real Organs

Kind've intelligent sounding speach about something in the first couple of minutes, that kind've comes in and out. Like bamboo forest-cliche'h

Sourmash-the blessing.

But in general a combination of thats melodies, the melodies of transwave-ulysses, the flow of phreaky-over the moon and crazy breakdowns of, and the energy/feel of etnica-astral way/party droid along with the fx and amazing synths of bamboo forest-cliche'h.

I've never done drugs, but I still get visuals quite often from music. Unfortunately its not very visceral, and its usually just individual elements. I dunno also, acidwax has helped a bit with it... I mean when I think wow, this colour/shape goes great with this feeling... now my brain sometimes thinks of that colour/shape when I get that feeling in music :)

Like when I think about a kick, its usually a black circle(or sometimes kind've a oval, if it is big and boomey and has a long tail), with the shade/shade of various parts to do with what frequencies it has. That also kinda affects the size.

Posted Image

Thats kind've what I think of when I think of a mid heavey but punchey kick, IDK though.. I kinda messed the shape of the bottom up. It should be thicker at the bottom, but not all triangley :S I really need a better program to draw it, that was just a quick botch up.

I fail at drawing... I dunno... sometimes... I can visualise stuff... but its not so easy to quantize it into an explanation or worse attempt to draw it. One of the easier thins to visualise I think, is probably that main lead in butlet and wilson-dimension, it's kind've a cross/web of aqua lines, although kind've circular where the lines meet, like a certain kind of net... +theres also some kind've a few sploches of tiny to medium size split around the place... like they've broken off from the main bit, because it is too powerful and they couldn't hold on.

Putting down stuff for 15 options will take ages >_< so I'll just put down 2 tracks that I feel have perfect production.

Koxbox - Doktor Mesmer

Sound Pollution - Where

Yes, imo the production on these 2 tracks is better than anything Hallucinogen, Pleidians etc... have ever done. I think nowadays people associate production with "crisp" sounds and stuff, for me production is putting the right sounds in the right places, and adding them exactly when they are needed, so that you can't think of a single way in which you could improve the track. Everything just flows.....

As for visualising, if I close my eyes when listening to good goa/psy yeah I can visualise stuff spinning, tending to infinity, flashing etc... its fun =) Maybe Milkdrop has helped ^^ And obviously, the trippier the track, the better I can visualise. For example Source of Emotion, since its trippy but slow enough for you to keep your visualising in time with the music, anything 140 BPM and I can't keep up.

Fun topic, now let me see...

1. Morning/Dark balance

Dark, but not as in dark psy, but as in deviant, macabre, obscure, dim.

2. Maximal/Minimal balance

100% Maximal over here as well!

3. Trance/Techno balance

Mostly trance, when I listen to psy trance. But I like it when a track has that irresistible techno drive.

4. Genre balance

80% goa trance, 10% scando madness and about 10% of phat and massive proggy, such as Gus Till.

5. BPM

BPM from 145-150

6. Signature

4/4 only

7. Lenght

The lenght is mostly irrelevant, it's what you do with it that counts. But, need I pick, I'd say between 9 and 12 minutes is a great time span for a psy trance track to fully develop.

8. Melodies

Melodies yes. Agressive, playful as in unpredictable, uncontrollable, and erratic. Not overly joyful and epic.

9. Bassline

Fat, juicy, opulent, like a pair of yet untarnished tits. OK now...

10. Percussion Status

Hard and steady kick. No nitzo or schranz kiddie stuff kicks. Deep, with a great amount of pressure getting squeezed outta the speakers.

11. Intro/Outro

Big, atmospheric intro. Better if it has a nice pad. It must gently prepare you for what is coming. Outro would be perfect with one layer dissapeared after another. Best ending with a delayed sample.

I concur, more or less.

12. Layers

Multi-layered. Lot of madness together or scattered throughout. I love apparent chaos which gives birth to harmony through multiple listens.

13. Build Ups/Climaxes

Yes and no. I sometimes enjoy a track which just floats around with no determined goa and purpose, but it's so good you just can't mind :)

14. Twists/Breaks/Turns/Changes

Yes! I like to be surprised; any form or shape of change in pattern or direction is great!

15. Spoken samples/Singing/Real Organs

NO singing. Only electronics. Samples are more than welcome if not overused and well thought out and placed in a track.

Perfect synaesthesia color:

Blue. Darkish blue.

Tracks that fit my description the best:

Lotus Omega- Diwali

Syb Unity Nettwerk Experience- Limited Access To The Files

Crop Circles- Antonomasia

Speedy J- Punnik

Stoop & Fidget- Mudless
