  1. There was an EP a couple years ago "Les Triplets De Boldville" but it's not really the same style as Highlight Me Please. Still good though. If you check out the official MEEO website there are some free tracks to download too, although they aren't really "new". (mostly from late 90s/early 00s): http://www.meeo.se
  2. Yep I installed rockbox on it. I can still use the original firmware if I hold down a button when it starts, but I don't know why I would do that. I can imagine the quality being pretty bad if your gigabeat turned everything in to a WMV, especially if you went from mp3 to WMV. Mp3 already loses some sound quality, so converting to WMV after that you'd lose even more. The iPod supported most filetypes (mp3, wav, etc), but it couldn't play FLAC files at all, which is what I prefer to use if possible. It has the exact same quality as a WAV file, but it's about half the size. Even when playing mp3 or wav files the iPod never sounded as good as my Fuze with Rockbox though.
  3. Sorry to hear about your leg, I hope it starts feeling better soon I find music in general gives me a lot more energy to exercise, but Goa in particular is such high energy music it just really gets me going. My iPod died about a year ago so I bought a cheap mp3 player (Sandisk Sansa Fuze) to replace it, which supports Rockbox. It's a bit more complicated than an iPod but it's so much more powerful, and has so many useful features (my iPod didn't even have custom EQ). The sound quality seems a lot better too. It also syncs/works well with my favorite music player on the PC, MediaMonkey, which is based on Winamp but offers even more customization options and features.
  4. Yep. I do think non-religious people can drop all rationalism and commit extreme acts too, but religion sure seems to make it a lot easier, because a lot of churches discourage questioning things (the basis of rational thought). I think part of this is a huge cultural/social divide. In most Islamic countries there is no concept of any sort of freedom of expression or speech. So they sort of assume the U.S. is the same, and that any video/cartoon/etc must have been approved by the U.S. government/leaders. Yep. I think it's more about the cultural, political, and economic situation in those countries than it is about the religion itself. Leaders have always used religion to stir up and anger the masses in to doing horrible things. If you read the texts of any religion they are all pretty similar actually, and have mostly good messages. The difference is how the religious and political leaders interpret those texts (usually to match their own beliefs/prejudices).
  5. I somehow completely missed the 2011 poll, so that's why I didn't vote this time I'm glad Carbon Based Lifeforms won the downtempo/ambient poll though. IMO they are consistently making the best downtempo stuff these days. It's sooo chilled out and melodic and really takes you to another world. No annoying samples either. I think it gets especially slow during the summer months because everyone is out enjoying themselves, going to shows, etc. Where I live it's freezing half the year so you have to get out while you can. Psytrance just isn't very popular either unfortunately so there's a limited number of people who could potentially sign up for forums. I've noticed from looking at artist pages on lastFM that most psytrance artists have less than a few thousand listeners (on lastFM anyway), whereas most of the other music I listen to has tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands (and most of them aren't big popular bands by any stretch).
  6. Has anyone else here played Dear Esther? It's a really unique idea and absolutely beautiful. It's really more of an interactive piece of art than a "game" per-say. Ambient is to music what Dear Esther is to videogames. Here's a few screenshots: http://images.bit-tech.net/content_images/2012/02/dear-esther-review/4.jpg http://s.pro-gmedia.com/videogamer/media/images/pc/dear_esther/screens/dear_esther_3.jpg http://imageshack.us/f/69/2012021700049.jpg/
  7. I know everyone talks about Posford but I really think this contains one of the greatest melodies ever, starting at about 4:20 (coincidence? ) till 5:30. I've listened to it probably 100+ times but it still makes my brain feel all bubbly, in a good way http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKrJzZ2IxiI More recently, I love the melodies on the 2nd half of this track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpNxmSWpKKM
  8. WOW Just listened to this (3x in a row) for the first time. This is what psychedelic music should be. It's so layered and unpredictable yet somehow really easy to get in to. All sorts of great trippy sounds coming at your from all directions too. This is definitely the best thing I've heard this year. That must be why I love it so much. I'm a big fan of Suomi, Talpa, and Tim Burton too.
  9. I just remembered this one, great groovy tune http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_voht-3HKvA
  10. I don't know if this is what you're looking for but I really dig this free release from last year: http://www.psynews.org/forums/index.php?/topic/62777-wiz-of-oz-emerald-city-acid-party-ep/
  11. I like his opinions on social issues and foreign affairs, but his economic ideas would basically amount to "more of the same". Deregulation clearly isn't going to work, and you don't need to look any further than Wall Street to see that. The problem is most regulators are corrupt so "regulation" isn't really getting the job done either. Corruption is the big problem. Both capitalism and socialism are great systems if you assume people are perfect, but clearly we aren't. I still agree with him more than most Republicrat/Democrans, but I've never voted for either of the main 2 parties and won't start now. They are the ones who fucked everything up, so expecting them to fix it seems extremely naive. I tend to vote for Green Party candidates even though they get less than 1% of the vote usually. I agree with them on almost everything except nuclear power (http://www.gp.org/committees/platform/2010/index.php) If you believe that I have a bridge to sell you. We still have the largest military base in the world, in Iraq. We even have tens of thousands of troops in Japan/Germany since WWII. We never really leave anywhere. I'm sure we'll find a new country to invade before too long also (as long as they have oil/gas)...
  12. This is a great album, as all of Easily Embarrassed stuff is. Their melodies really take you on great journey, and are very non-repetitive. You never know what's coming next It's really some of the best chillout music being made these days IMO. I don't know how such good music can be free, but I'm not complaining Nice review too
  13. Cool idea for a topic. Some of these artists I'm not really familiar with but I'll try 1. Astral Projection - Ambience 2. MFG - Hypnotized 3. Transwave - Rezwalker 4. Etnica - Moon Influence 5. Total Eclipse - Psychedelic Terrorist 6. Hallucinogen - Deranger (this is the hardest one for me, nearly every track is great) 7. Koxbox - Life Is.. 8. Pleiadians - Family of Light 9. Shakta - Lepton Head Pt III 10. X-Dream - The Second Room (A-Trip) 11. Prana (don't know if I've ever heard this) 12. MWNN - Treacle 13. Psychaos (could never get into this) 14. GNOTR - Kwo-Ne-She (from Mind Rewind, this year) 15. Infected Mushroom - Dancing with Kadafi 16. Electric Universe - Rain 17. Chi-A.D. - Astral Warrior 18. The Infinity Project - Stimuli 19. Cosmosis - Moonshine 20. Oforia (not familar with this)
  14. I think I voted this as #1 in one of those yearly "Best of" psynews polls, so there are some people who appreciate it. Really unique and highly psychedelic stuff. You can tell a lot of love went in to it, every sound seems perfectly placed.
  15. Well around here it's more like "Psytrance? What's that?" I agree a lot of people don't really explore music after their teenage years. Really you could go even further and say a lot of people don't really explore new ideas in general after reaching a certain age. You don't see too many people change their political/ideological/philosophical/religious views when they are 40 years old either. I can't really relate though. I look at some of the things I believed/said/did as a teen and wonder "what the hell was I thinking?" I feel like we are in a golden age of music right now. There is just such a vast amount and variety, and it's so easily accessible compared to the "old days". There really is something for everyone no matter how weird/obscure your tastes. Even the 60s/70s (which I consider to be another "golden age" for music) didn't have the variety of sounds we have now. I used to feel the same way when I was younger, but I eventually realized it's not the technical ability on an instrument that makes music special, it's the creation/writing. There are a lot of people who can play Coltrane on a sax, Hendrix on guitar, or Bach on Piano, but only Coltrane, Hendrix, Bach were able to write/create such great music. I still appreciate technical ability on an instrument, but without the original creativity that technical ability would be a waste.
  16. A lot of people might know this one, but it's really unique. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vs_6wR1_Y3M
  17. I was a big fan of Juno Reactor and they are one of the groups/artists that got me into psytrance (along with Astral Projection, IM, Hallucinogen, MWNN), but I agree their stuff sounds pretty dated when you hear it today. I kinda feel the same way about all of those artists except Hallucinogen though. I remember Shango feeling kinda "oldschool" even back when I first heard it though (around 2002), despite only being a couple years old. It's still decent music but I rarely listen to it anymore. When I do it tends to be Bible of Dreams, but I always thought Bible of Dreams was their best album.
  18. I've heard this type of thing a lot from "metalheads". The "Classic rock" listeners are very anti-trance too I've found. They just want to listen to the same Led Zeppelin records for the rest of eternity it seems, and anything made in the last 30 years sucks. The ironic thing is that is exactly what many people said about Led Zeppelin (or similar bands) back then. The only thing they seem to hate more than electronic music is hip-hop. It just always amazes me that people can be satisfied with such a limited musical selection, but to each their own. I know a lot of people won't like psytrance, but to stick to one strict subgenre of music just seems weird.
  19. I have that feeling with most "pop culture". Most of the the stuff people make small talk about I have no idea what they are talking about (latest reality TV show, blockbuster movie, top40 single, sports game, etc). I can usually find something in common music-wise though, but I listen to a lot more than just psytrance.
  20. For me psytrance is a subgenre of Trance that includes a variety of subgenres (Forest, Twilight, Full-On, Dark, Suomi, Goa, Progressive, etc). A lot of the best artists don't stick strictly to one of these styles though, and have an interesting mix (even completely outside the Trance spectrum sometimes). I only discovered Psytrance around 2002 though, so perhaps that's why I don't consider goa a seperate genre. When psytrance started it was all "goa" I guess, but it has evolved to include a lot more sounds. When Rock music started it was mostly just blues sounds, but it also evolved to include new ideas. Elvis and Olivia Tremor Control are very different sounds, but they are both "Rock" music. I just tag all my stuff as "Trance". If I want to listen to some suomi-trance I know which artists have that sound, likewise if I want to listen to goatrance, etc. I do this with all my music too. All of my Metal is just tagged as "Metal", even though I have death/black/progressive/thrash/classic metal.
  21. I would say I like melodic music, not just goa specifically. There's a lot of good psy with melodies/harmonies that wouldn't be considered "goa".
  22. Nope there's almost no samples at all. The intro track has some children talking/laughing but its a short 3min downbeat track. I think "Shall We Dance" is the only trance track with a spoken sample (and it's only about 20sec, half of which is just repeating the last word). I've only listened to it twice so far, but I think it's already my favorite Talpa album.
  23. Field Rotation - Acoustic Tales album blew me away. Someone on psynews reviewed it and I think it's my favorite album of the year right now. The whole album is incredible, but here are a couple of my favorites: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7oXDG-bNZY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRtW6WHuxSE
