Yeah I'm gonna have to go the other way on this one. Maybe it was ok in 2001, but in 2013 this sounds very dated in terms of production. The melodies are very simple and hardly challenging. The end was a bit more engaging on the title track, but it took forever to get there. We Know Nothing has a cool sample floating over something a little more promising. I liked the break beat, nice touch. Better than the Planet X Ep though. Mdk

Eastern Fantasy (Lyctum Remix) No chair can contain this! Way to go YSE! You know I didn't think you had it in ya, but there you are delivering a 4 track ep of danceable progressive remixes. At least it's four different tracks remixed instead of the nightmarish Way of Life remix album. But that's a story for another time. The creme de la creme of progressive trance put their best foot forward with uplifting melodies, floating breaks and chair leaving dance grooves. Layers get stacked as the reverberating tales unfold. It's a darker and more wide open style of melodic progressive trance that I can't get enough of. None of the original tracks are here so these artists no own the results. I've gone back and forth on whether the originals should be included, but I think it's best that they aren't. Like melodic progressive? Get this. Beatport Mdk

There. I said it. A fine line exists when one wants to use repetition for the purpose of hypnotism or delivering a message. It entrances, or rather it can entrance. Sometimes it's just annoying. "Are you f*cking kidding me? Stop with the f*cking cherubs Paul! And put some pants on them!! Why don't I just drive you to prison?" Lunar Asylum is Chris Stevenson and Paul Greendale and let's be honest. This...well, uh this ain't their best work. It's noisy and repetitive without a trace of depth. Like a car with no steering wheel it just goes straight. I read Draeke's review on Discogs and he labeled this acid trance. If that's what this is then thank you sir for saving me the time exploring yet another genre. I suppose not everything from 1996 can be gold. Mdk

The original. The joke was that MWNN made that track and their version was so popular that it was on MANY compilations. So much so that perhaps the highest court in the land would rule that MWNN was now the rightful owner of that track. Sure there would be appeals and the defense would attempt to try the court in the media, but it would ultimately be unsuccessful. Liberties taken! Mdk

Where do I belong (Martin Roth rmx) I had a big review all typed up for this and now it seems redundant. Feel like I'm standing next to Shaq in the locker room and my towel just fell off. I haz shame. The first disc was some solid progressive trance with strong beats. He's good with the effects and the little sounds that take you deeper. It's not as deep or grandiose as say, E-Clip or Time In Motion, but it is involving. I like his break work and he delivers some floaty passages. If I had one gripe it would be that he grabs one sequence and stretches it out without much change. Not quite minimal of course, but a few more layers wouldn't hurt. But that's his style and I'm sure there are plenty of people who like it the way it is. The second disc is more of the same, although I would say it is more varied in style than the first. It is a disc of remixes after all. It wasn't spectacular and no track stood head and shoulders above the rest, but particular recognition goes to the Gaudium remix for its aggressive stance and searing 303 work. That site offers so many gold nuggets for the price of belly button lint that it has become dare I say invaluable. I don't always have the dough I want to spend on CDs so he has become a daily stop along my internet travels. This is the debut of Pan Psychic, but really more of a best of their tracks from 2002 - 2007. Never heard of them except for In Suspend which was on the glorious Human Hyperactivation back in the early days of new school goa trance. They hold the distinction of being the first trance act outta St. Petersburg and I don't mean the one in Florida. The Russian one has standards. Unfortunately this also appears to be their last release. They either decided to pack it in or Putin heard them talking about gay sex. There is something for everyone here from acidic goa trance to the darky darky stuff. Not only that, but they switch styles in the same track. Bioware is soaked with delicious detail and has a little bit of darkpsy and twilight. The title track and In Suspend are quality goa tracks while Ozone Cloud has a drum n bass feel. The Last Reality is a slow churning downtempo piece. Now I'm not gonna piss on your leg and tell you they are all stellar tracks because they're not (please keep your Russian folk music outta my psy thank you). But this project does showcase their versatility. Also it came at a time where goa wasn't released with the frequency that it is today, so the excitement was there 5 years ago. Go to any beach on the Jersey shore in the summertime and you'll hear the always threatening phrase ,"Do you know who I am?!?" through ridiculously puckered lips and a mouth bloated with cheese ball. This is the war cry of the hyper muscled neanderthal who thinks he's a member of a tribe because he got a tattoo. If that's the type of "tribal" you're looking for then I'm sorry but I can't help you. But if you're on the hunt for booming tribal drums then this will be perfect. I've never heard of this project and to be honest I cared much more for the review than the actual music. Talk about thorough! But the release itself was boring for me as I was waiting for interesting changes that never came. Some tracks though felt epic, like Kaijko with those aforementioned drums and floating break. Some were funky & danceable like Might and Magic. But too much filler took away from those cool drums on tracks like Freedom. So whilst the drums and feel give this that hidden tribe in the jungle feel, I'm afraid it's an opportunity lost. Mdk

"But Mike, I can find all these tracks on other comps." First I wasn't aware this was a question and answer session. That said, there is a reason for that. MWNN so forcibly abducted the Octopus track that the Art of Trance still cannot play it to this day. Do You Believe is a slow, undulating churner that captures the mysticism of goa trance. I don't know what a Rezwalker is, but the Black Thunder Version is two scoops of awesome. Yeah, it's that good. And we haven't even gotten to Etnica yet. Tribute pumps and swirls and stacks layers like I stack checks. Well, like I would if I had a job. And no Astral compilation would be complete without an Astral track. I would've preferred the original Radial Blur, but the downtempo version isn't without its charm. Bottom line...I would own the sh*t out of this. Mdk

MUSIC. *MUSIC...MUSIC...* You have to say it like you're at a monster truck show to appreciate that joke. Another compilation loaded with some of the best names in old school goa trance. But unless you shit hundred dollar bills you probably ain't picking this one up. What's remarkable about this release (besides the price) is that for some of the artists it isn't the same tracks copy pasted from other compilations. Not Free Lemonade from Total Eclipse, not Rezwalker or Cycles of Life from Transwave, and not Vertigo from Indoor. Nothing wrong with those classics except perhaps overexposure. The tracks that are here aren't weak tea by any stretch. Fuel On and Stratosfearless (which I have only recently come to appreciate) are monster combinations of goa and psy that constantly evolve. Camel was always interesting to me because as the end approaches the melody turns into something uplifting. Astral delivers a track that isn't Mahadeva or Let There Be Light and Liquid closes things out. I come from modest beginnings having been taught the value of money so sh*tting hundred dollar bills ain't gonna happen. And if it happens to you first you should sit next to me and have Taco Bell and then you need to get checked out cause that ain't healthy. It's a sold compilation that I would love to have, but I ain't sifting through your lunch to get it. Mdk

Like a suspicious girl searching your browser history...I had to find out what was in there. "Aw, hell no! Now who da f*k is dat b*tch?" Boston strong? Try hood rat skrong. Warriors of Light- Good layers and sharp leads. Great way to open. Psychoactivity- Quintessential goa that doesn't overpower, but delivers a kill shot right to the ears. Psylo 31- The name just screams German techno, but it's a wicked little surprise that brings the two genres together. My Plan- If his plan was to create a track with more bite than an Australian shark then he succeeded. Orange Night- Remember when Boris made awesome goa trance? Wait...the same guy that unleashed Higher Modes? Of course I don't remember I was in my twenties and who the f*ck remembers that? 303 Gold- This compilation is sweet! Wonder where the speed bumps are? Ah, there it is. More like...303 pewter. I.C.P.- Never been a big fan of this project and this does nothing to change that. Parent Plant III- This had some nice bounce to it, but I would've liked it a lot more without all the annoying whispering. Wanna whisper? Go to the library. Screw Driver- Even without stacks of melody this is head nodding goa trance. Oriental Fantasies- Go nuts Asian business man. I don't get it. Flying under the radar, there are some good goa tracks here and the flow is very nice. Recommended. Mdk

I'm gonna cough up the biggest f*cking hairball just for you big guy." My break from posting reviews was probably as much of a vacation for you as it was for me. But I'm back and all these releases ain't gonna review themselves. Timewarp is at it again with yet another new EP. They are an EP machine! Omneon is Denis Paholkov from Estonia (now you're just making up country names) and he combines full-on and goa with pretty good results. I liked the 1st track the best as the one called psytrance might be a little too full-on for some. Sounds like he's got talent and I look forward to seeing what he can do on future Ep's that I'm sure Timewarp will release. Beatport Mdk

The Bomb 9. Solar Storm 10. Future Excursions "The universe is a symphony. And the Mind of God is cosmic music." Mind of God, Multiverse, Super Position, and The Self are blistering stuff. Pure EU energy with copious amounts of acid. Nothing wrong with that. But what the f*ck was up with that preachy b*tch on Tune Up? Trying to be too deep and insightful comes off sounding pompous and cheesy as hell. And the speeding up of the track to a break? How many times are we going to use that trick? Then there's the rest. Science has guitars probably played by Chico who will be a part of 2008's ode to STD's Burning. Electric Universe could've been part of the good group, but it's a weaker clone of that group. Then there's The Bomb. It's fitting he would name this track as a synonym for taking a sh*t. He tries to hide the guitars amidst his brand of electronica. Not working. Like a fat kid hiding behind a parking meter. "We can totally see you Elliot. Totally." So if you like the EU style then half of the tracks here will suit you fine. Yes, you're a legend in the psytrance genre and as I've often stated with all the great tracks you've made there is a certain amount of freedom you're entitled to. But there are limits. To whom is this supposed to appeal? The people that like guitars probably want more than generic guitar riffs. And those that don't like guitars in their psytrance will run from this like it was an AIDS patient with cancer. I'm sure Chico is a great guitar player, but why f*ck up great tracks with these guitar remixes? I understand that you got bills and food ain't free. But can't you mow some lawns or get a paper route? Why do you have to dumb down your music? I didn't want to say anything, but this has been going on for a while now. Look we all loved Cosmic Experience, but that was almost a decade ago. I'm not saying don't let your music evolve, but maybe it's time to try something different. Even Michael Jordan retired. Perhaps you could bring back the Galaxy project and make a downtempo album. I'm still a fan, but you're making it hard to play your music without getting embarassed. Kill Me Now 8. San Pedro 9. Smoke With Us "You're gonna kill me aren't you?" Almost 8 years to the day that this was released. The debut album from Swedish nutjob Tommy Axelsson is one of my favorite bits of psytrance. Everything screams psychedelia with a super dark atmosphere. He was one of those artists who wasn't afraid to inject a little melody into his nightmares thereby making it more accessible. Oh he still included the screams of women from horror movies (Kill Me Now) so please don't think this is a walk down the yellow brick road. The bass lines hammer away at your sanity while alien effects graze the temples. Bubbles threaten to boil over aggro guitar crunch and Prodigy breakbeats on tracks like Kiffen Bitte. I find one of his strengths are the complexities he weaves into his dark creations. Instead of being overwhelming (like a lot of darkpsy can be) his layers invite you to explore further. His synth phrases melt into each other for smooth transitions making the hallucination seem all the more real. And that's what this is...one long hallucination. At the same time he is able to stack layers upon one another to create a wall of sound. Another reason to like his work is the samples he uses and manipulates. Never cheesy and usually enhance the mood. All in all a nice piece of dark work without being to heavy. So something for those who love the night and people like me who like to visit. Sunset In Jupiter This was released on my wife's birthday, but sorry I didn't buy enough cupcakes. What? Ummm...no. Geez, are there no boundaries with you Greeks? Don't feel bad, I didn't get any either. Siam (John Pitsakis) is like the underground hot property these days. His style is quite intricate with layers that just seem to seep into place. The promo describes it as music with "deep emotional melodies." Yeah, I would go along with that. And melody is fully represented here. It's not unlike the recent offering Voyage In The Universe EP from Cosmic Dimension. There are plenty of outerspace themes with cosmic sounds that fully engage the brain. It flows from delicate sequences to long and trance inducing melodies. Amanita Dream is more trancey in a harmless sort of way, bookended by some quality goa trance tracks with some storming phrases. The title track has a juicy and sneaky goa melody that particularly sticks in the melon. Congratulations to John and to Timewarp for delivering yet another quality arrow in the quiver of goa trance. Try 2 Bass rmx "I will bring you hope! And I only ask for one thing in return...don't get in my way." Ketuh Records was Timecode and Nexus Media before they were a household name. Yeah I know they weren't a South African label, but work with me here. Ketuh released some of the twisted night time full on before that became a thing. Audialize is Joao Apell and this was his debut album. Now more than 10 years old it still brings the heat even if it can show its age in spots. Howver, back in 2003 it was on the cutting edge of night time psytrance. Full of acid and dark atmosphere I think it opened a lot of peoples eyes. Almost as if we didn't understand what type of music this was. It's not the happy full on that's everywhere, but it's also not totally dark. Generator and G-Strings are prime examples of the type of melodic yet dark tracks that still rock. This guy blazed a trail for those that would follow. Killer Buds, Ex-Gen, Concept, Tickets...you name it. I can still enjoy the twilight sounds in this one. Mdk

Artist: Melicia Title: Running Out of Time Label: Phonokol Date: July, 2013 1. Experience 2. Running out of time 3. Freeman 4. Psychodeliya 5. Dancing up (dance mix) 6. Smash 7. Genesis 8. Sea Master 9. Illusion Quest "It seems...we are running out of time." If you picked out 50 of the all time cheesy full-on compilations and albums from the early to mid 2000's I'm willing to bet that Melicia was on 75% of them. Dude was everywhere and I believe him to be one of the harbingers of the Israeli full-on sound. And as we all know there have been an avalanche of derivative full-on producers that exploded onto the scene. Like a herpes outbreak at a frat party you just knew there were more coming down the line. Just looking at the Phonokol artist list on the Psyshop page makes me want to say Oy vey. It was one of the first albums I bought and it was aggressive. The samples spoke of aliens, and psychedelics, and there were movies I recognized. Realize I came from regular old trance where the vocals sometimes reminded me of house. Where the melodies were euphoric and sickeningly sweet. The bass lines here were punchy and rambled unlike the one note bass often found in trance. He put layers of crunchy sounds together and it was like a wall of powerful sound. Arpeggios filtered up and down the scale hit me just right. The tracks were long and seemed to get stronger as new melodies were added. But don't get it twisted. It's still full on and there are some tracks that make me want to jab a shrap pencil in my ear to end the suffering. Or at least parts of tracks. The house like female vocal in Psychodelia is just such an instance. I liked Smash, but could you cram any more samples in there? It's like a f*cking clown car. So if it sounds like I'm torn on this release, you would be correct. At times it can be powerful full-on and at others it's, well...full-on. And I think that's how it goes. The shelf life for full on is very short and this gets old rather quickly. Mdk

Loved this album. Facebook doesn't have a like strong enough to indicate how touching this is. It is sadly beautiful and might bring some to tears. Ok it brought me to tears. But I cried when Rudy got that sack because I was so proud of him. RUDY! RUDY! He worked so hard you know. And that's how I relate to this. Sure I cried, but it's similar to watching your child succeed at something all on his own. The style is neo classical (whatever the f*ck that is) with electronic elements. Just call it ambient, I know what that is. If music is supposed to move you than welcome to exhibit A. It's slow and expressive; part thriller movie soundtrack part dream sequence. I am 100% certain that the 4th tale was used in a movie, but cannot recall which one. Bandcamp Mdk

Far Sight Thank God I don't have to be subjected to music from this assclown. There is no amount of nut punching that would allow me to atone for being a fan of his. Think his mom would mind if we tried to shove him back up her uterus? She could keep the money, but I'd say we'd have to weld that portal closed in return. I'm so glad that I listen to this music. I'd sooner crawl across broken glass soaked in the AIDS virus than have to be subjected to the crap that seems popular these days. Yeah this music has been kind to me. Not just for the music but for the incredible people I've "met" around the globe. I'm pretty good at geography, but let's be honest since that ugliness in what was once Yugoslavia occurred, I couldn't find Serbia or Croatia on a map if you pointed to it. Nonetheless, I have met more than enough people from that region and they've all been fantastic. Alex Ortegren is another one of those kind souls. Otherwise known as Kiriyama he's from Sweden and everyone knows where that is (thank you Swedish Bikini Team). Thanks to his album Reach Escape Velocity (one of the best forest/goa albums ever) I wrote him and we've kept in contact. Nothing but kindness from that guy. So when he sent me some tracks to give a listen I was only too happy to oblige. This is Renato Moreira from Portugal who also is the brains behind the LAB project. Check out his Clean Air Turbulence EP...good stuff. Now DVSM records is known primarily for the dark stuff, but this EP is a full 180 degree turn from that. I love seeing labels experiment with different genres. First thing you'll pick up on is the short track times. Aside from the 1st and third track nothing is over 4 minutes, so a sampling you shall have. World Traveller is all about the dub and the Indian chanting, mid tempo stuff. Low Garden picks up the pace and still has that dubby bass. India as you would expect has a female Indian vocal as well as instruments recognizable from that region. Near the end there is a slight flirtation with goa and that makes me smile. A New Journey has a cool break beat and clever percussion to go along with its moody atmosphere. Far Sight brings the DnB and even though I don't follow that genre at all it still sounded lush and very competent. My favorite is the bonus track called 3rd Generation as it seems nicely chaotic and warm. Totally different from what I was expecting from this label. Eerie at times, but not dark at all. He's all over the place on this one touching on numerous styles. Because of the short track times I'm not certain whether he's just experimenting with stuff to see what he likes or throwing stuff on the wall to see what appeals to people. The sound quality is top notch as it was mastered by none other than Colin "OOOD" Benunm. Another cool aspect is the interactive site which has a really good design. Thanks for the listen gentlemen. You get the rest...there's 8 of these tracks so if you can't figure out the next in sequence, I don't know...you're a f*cking idiot. So this isn't anything new. It's a remastered version of his 2003 album Aftermath which I reviewed here. Aside from being remastered it comes with 14 HD wallpapers if you're into that. Also Aftermath #8 which wasn't on the original (only on the Albedo compilation from 2005) is included. Cool thing is if you already bought the original then all you have to do is send them a picture of the cover atop your naked girlfriend and they'll send you the download link for free.
