  1. rrrrr, the limiter looks sexy. only 5 knobs, won't do much, but at least i'll exactly understand what it does. I like to be in control.
  2. yes, waved has some cool stuff, as long as the fuctions you need stay seperate and simple, it's ok, but recently i got Ozone3 and i didn't like it.
  3. bedankt voor de comment(aar) you just said: thanks for it comment "het" can mean "the" too but only for specific words, you'll only know when you have feeling with the language thanks bedankt for voor the de comment comment, lol it's practically the same you can call me if you want to hire me as your personal language teacher. btw: downloading mix, ik zal mijn commentaar later zeker posten.
  4. yeah, he sure did techno and electro. he did everything! From goa with man with no name & hallucinogen, to trance, acid, techno, electro till pop music with faithless. I would not mind hearing any liveset in any genre from him. I bet they all pwn. best track evargh from Ollie? hey this thread is supposed to be about Union jack, not Oliver Lieb!
  5. techno? spicelab is not techno imo but acid / acidtrance. Oliver lieb has his roots in earliest trance and has since then a big influence & activity in the entire electronic music scene. He's one flexibel guy doing remixes of both faithless and hallucinogen tracks. But from all his alter ego's LSG and paragliders still stand out as the true Oliver Lieb sound. anyway, don't you think it's time for a decent Oliver Lieb appreciation thread? hehe, i'll spam it with every youtube vid of him i can find. Great music *cough*LSG*cough*
  6. OMG radi, i"m pleasantly surprised, that you, as hardcore goatrance freak started a union jack thread.. If you like the sound of Union jack, you should def also check paragliders, terra forma, art of trance, old Cygnus X, and everything related to Oliver Lieb (imo the posford of trance). I think i have all union jack tracks, i'm a real old skool trance hardcore obsessed guy these days, more than i was ever into goa, my absolute fav of the moment is: fromage frais. I wish someone would do a decent remix out of this, rerelease it with a modern sound . This trance tickles my sense of music and tranquility in the same way goatrance tickles my sense of madness. I don't know if you'll like it, but if you keep listening to trance some day you will, it infests you because of it's open personality. I once bought a few trance CD's because they had a single man with no name track on it, and a few years later my psyCD's are dusting and i keep buying old expensive LP's and stuff. paragliders - paraglider is on of my favs in this subgenre too. I think you'll like it more then the union jack track i posted. I bought this record in all it's several remixes i could find. YES, that's freakin crazy.
  7. OMG anyone that uses those crappy mastering plugins should be slapped. I never use multiband compressors or mastering plugins on my master channel,it's too complicated for the fine tuning mastering really is, it's geek stuff, pretty boring, i don't care about it, not my fav field in audio IMO; once my mix is somehow decent i'm pretty satisfied. When i try mastering I mostly use several software compressors in a row, but the result is not fantastic. The problem is that soft compressors all have a similar outcome, and others try to be as broad and complete as if one compressor is the key to mastering. I see mastering as a sequence of different compressors or simple audio techniques that each have a single purpose to lift the audio. Something i would recommend trying, i only did it once but the result was positive: Render all your channels as seperate wav's and pull them through some hardware compressors, really old hardware compressors are IMO the best, they don't do much, but it's exactly what you need, they will only have one function, but an important one . Everything that has a compressor on board can be used and you will learn which compressor is doing best on a certain job when you put your channels back together. And experimenting with recording some channels on analog media and putting them back to digital format can have good effects. I've been thinking of buying an old DAT or tape recorder, with the big wheels and stuff and record one channel of my track on it, put it back to digital and do other tracks with compressor or something. I have used A Kaoss pad 3 and recorded all my tracks to minidisc with different EQ or compressor settings. That's my impression on mastering IMO, it's kinda like using presets on software, once you know a preset you can tune it better but the best presets for mastering appear to be simple techniques with compressors and analog media.
  8. weed: ok, i smoke often while making music. works fine. coke: why would you even spend sooo much money and then just waste is it by sitting in front of a screen, bullshit. Coke is for downtown. + it's addictive as hell, if you start doing it at home by yourself, well ... it's not that good. LSD: nope, maybe consider playing sitar in the forest; if you can't play sitar play some jimi hendrix Cd's. Seriously, if you take acid and manage to sit in front of a screen to make a psytrack you are probably already completely crazy; you need serious psychological treatment. There are more interesting things to do then making music! Like..... dancing, and waving your arms around, pretending your a duck, replace every word in your vocabulary with " DERP" and make whole conversations('deeeeerp derp derp dereeeeeep") with that, take a walk down the street and start laughing and pointing to everyone you meet. Then when you had so much fun that your cheeks hurt for 3 days go back to make some music. I think it will have a much better impact. XTC:A 4-4 kick is enough to keep me happy on E; so i don't expect alot of technical insight.
  9. My first live set will be next weekend @ heron festival in Belgium. I now have 1 hour and 40 minutes of music. Still a few tracks to go and i can play a full 2 hour live set. I hope people will like it cause it's pretty unusual music for a psy festival. It's a mix of all sub genres of trance, always with a straight forward trance/techno beat.
  10. WORD! If they are bashing other electronic genres it is still funny. I know a guy who gets really annoyed whenever i try to play Jazz, he once called it shallow and flat music with no emotion Then we went back to dark psy, rak rak rak rak rak rak rak rak rak rak rak rak rak rak full of emotion rakrakrakrakrakrkakakakakarararararrrrrrrrrrrrrr rak rak rak That's not funny anymore! That's seriously fucking fuckerdefucking fuckier than fucked UP! seriously people, dark psy = not funny anymore.
  11. AAAAARRGHHH, aaahh, WHAT!!!!!!! Are there still people out there that don't know what a 303 is? LET'S BURN THEM!
  12. what a dissapointment ; I thought this thread was about sex....
  13. 1992 1993 1994 1995 Union jack - red herring 1996 prodigy - out of space 1997 Hybrid - symphony 1998 i'm getting bored here with looking for video's and hurting my brain, will finish this lost another time.
  14. that's a good sing no? people with hands in air..., it mostly refers to good music. as in the opposite, people only drinking beer and smoking weed all the time while only moving their feet for 6 hours = bad music. There could of course be a paradox that people only throw their hands in the air on bad music. interesting topic to investigate.
  15. top 400 best trance songs source # Humate - Love Simulation (Paul van Dyk's Love mix) [1993] [ibiza trance] # It's amazing how little this track loses its loveliness with repeat listens. I've had it for 6 years now, and I still love it just as much as I did when it floored me on the first listen. Even the other top 10 tracks (while still amazing) have diminished in some ways with compulsive listening, but this one remains the shining gem at the top of the trance genre. This perfectly captures the beauty of a tropical sunset on a peaceful deserted island, and to this day never fails to evoke such a scene. # # Aphex Twin - Didgeridoo [1992] [acid trance] # This track is simultaneously hard, twisted and beautiful, which is something I would have considered a nearly impossible feat until I heard this, and despite being over 15 years old, it still sounds innovative and fresh today. Built on a foundation of Basic Channel-esque foggy acid lines, Didgeridoo manages to build and break like trance, while meandering and wandering like ambient and relentlessly pounding and squiggling like acid techno without sounding forced or mashed together. A didgeridoo sets the bassline resulting in a simultaneously relaxing, funky and dark atmosphere. It can sound like a trance anthem, a techno monster, or an ambient chilldown depending on how you listen, and it's all of those together and more, and it grows greater with each listen. Didgeridoo is undoubtedly one of the greatest trance tracks of all time. Whether or not it's in the genre of "trance" per se is questionable (though a connecting thread is certainly there), but in the most elastic sense of entrancing dance music, it comes out (mostly) on top. # {arguable - ambient acid techno(?)} # # Energy 52 - Cafe Del Mar (Three N' One mix) [1998] [anthem trance/ibiza trance] # The track that defines everything that an ibiza anthem is, full of all of the excess and bombast of the island: pure dancable joy. The track's central hook is a long, arpeggiated melody looping such that the beginning and end melt together into an endless sphere. It sounds like sped-up 70's minimalism run through a 90's dark trance synth with a sub-tribal feel (it's the beats that do this). I'll admit, the build-up is a little bit cliche by now, but it wasn't really at the time, and for second-wave trance, it's as creative as it's going to get, and more than compensated by the spot-on anthem. In a not so surprising twist, this was initially written by one of the fathers of modern trance (Cosmic Baby), back in 1993 (they were always better at trance than the bedroom nerds and the corporate pop machine). It has gotten another remix every single year since 93, most of which are picked up by trance jocks and many of which go back on the club charts (the best is undoubtedly 1997's chart-topping Three N' One remix (although some prefer the 1998 Nalin & Kane version, and classic trance addicts will love the original)). # # Underworld - Born Slippy (NUXX). [1995] [classic trance/hard trance] # A melodic trance tune with stream-of-consciousness lyrics that become stranger with each listen, mainly beacuse they never really had any actual internal logic to begin with. The melody is unforgettably catchy, and contains a nice twist in the middle, in which it goes from being a wistful and pretty little ambient trancer, to a hard and abrasive swedish techno stormer, and pulls both off better than just about anything in either genre. Surprisingly, especially with this being, you know, actually good, this was a huge hit in Europe (it went to number 2 on the world chart in 1996-97), and gets at least two new remixes every year, at least one of which always goes back on the club charts (hopefully 2006 will be an exception? Honestly, they're never going to top the original). So, not only is it one of the best, it's also the most popular to still retain credibility. # {arguable - melodic techo(?)} # # The Age of Love - Age of Love [1990] [classic trance] # The big bang. The beginning. Before age of Love, there were whispers, but nothing like this. With this release, trance existed. It wasn't ethereal acid house, or complex techno, or experimental industrial (yes, this is one of the genre's precursors) - it was trance. Although it wouldn't be recognized for 3 more years (1993 - the "year of trance"), this was one of the most influential electronic tracks of the 90's. It layed down the foundations of the whole style, and did so with pure elegance. This track has aged so well that were it released today, it would still be an anthem. # # Sasha - Xpander [1999] [progressive trance] # Perfect progressive trance. A melody that, like the last 2 tracks, is atmospheric, loops on itself, and endlessly contagious, without seeming repetitive. This song is absorbing - the feeling throughout is impossible to describe, since like I said before...dancing about architecture. Just download the track. It's incredible. (Was another mega-European hit. I don't know the details specifically, but it doesn't matter). # # Nalin & Kane - Beachball [1996] [ibiza trance] # Gorgeous, elegant, and never tiring. It's quite possible that I've listened to this track more times than any other, probably my personal favorite. Built out of tribal, yet melodic beats (the "Nalin and Kane sound"), relaxing and inobtrusive vocals, and a slow, subtle build that takes its time to breakdown. When it does breakdown, air strings and seagulls wash and flow around each other as if musically taking flight to a Mediterannean sky over a sunset-golden beach. When the breakdown ends, "Becahball" slowly floats back to earth, before spending the remainder of the track rippling back and forth between the sky and the sand. # {arguable - ibiza house} # # Future Sound of London - Papua New Guinea [1991] [ambient trance/classic trance] # Released in 1991, this song wasn't even intended to be trance - no one even used the word yet (although there was a fledgling sound growing in the underground house, rave, and techno scenes). It was meant to be ambient breaks, but "Papua New Guinea's" atmosphere was like little other electronic dance released at the time - ethereal, spacy, almost angelic, but still dancefloor-worthy, catchy, and even relaxing. The song instantly became a trance classic once the genre was brought into official existence in 1993, and deservingly so. Like it's predecessor "Age of Love," even today it can be played without sounding the slightest bit dated. # {arguable - ambient breaks} # # Hybrid - Symphony [1997] [orchestral trance] # Wow. Forget Adagio for Strings, forget Protect Your Mind, forget ****ing Airwave, symphonic trance was created and destroyed with this track. Everything trance is supposed to make you feel, and almost everything classical is supposed to do can be found here in this amazing song. Easy to dance to, creative beats (breaktrance, so they actually put some thought into them), more melodies than you can possibly count, and all this without sounding crowded or overstuffed; all of it original. They even did it without overusing the breakdown. Fantastic, it completly lives up to its title. # # DnTel - (This is) The Dream of Evan and Chan (Superpitcher Kompakt remix) [2002] [minimal trance] # This is probably the only trance track ever created with vocals worth listening to. But it doesn't rest on them, just allowing them to sparsely resonant in a minimal nothing, it raises them, gently bringing them to soaring heights with gorgeous melodies that slowly drown out the surreal beauty of the evocative lyrics. Eventually the glistening bells overtake the words entirely, taking the already flying track into the stratosphere. It's the perfect representative of minimal trance. # {arguble: tech-house/progressive house/microhouse} # # The Orb - Little Fluffy Clouds [1991] [ambient trance] # (Note: this is ambient house, but I think it's safe to put all "ambient dance" genres under trance (besides much of ambient techno), as they are often aesthetically very similar [in sound, not necessarily the technical details], and the ease of mixing the two together). This is one of only 3 ambient anything tracks to ever reach the top 40 charts (correct me if I'm wrong on this one). It was a runaway hit when released in 1990 (although I don't know if it ever reached North America), Little Fluffy Clouds was another major influence on the formation of the trance genre. Catchy melodies, ambient synths, and an interesting vocal sample, combined with the trademark Orb atmosphere make this another incredible classic. # {arguable - ambient house} # # Orbital - Halcyon On & On [1993] [ambient trance] # {arguable - ambient techno} # # Beanfield - Tides (Carl Craig mix) [2004] [minimal trance/neo-trance] # # Chicane - Offshore [1996] [ibiza trance] # {arguable - ambient house/ibiza house} # # Banco De Gaia - Heliopolis [1993] [classic trance/acid trance] # # Choice - Acid Eiffel [acid trance] # {arguable - acid techno} # # Ame - Rej [2005] [minimal trance/neo-trance] # {arguable - "minimal"} # # L.S.G. - Netherworld [1997] [progressive trance] # # Paragliders - Paraglide [1993] [classic trance] # # Balil - Parasight [1993] [classic trance/acid trance] # # Salt Tank - Eugina [1996] [ibiza trance] # # The PQM - You Are Sleeping (Luke Chable Vocal mix) [2004] [progressive trance/deep trance] # {arguable - progressive house} # # LSG - Hearts [1994] [classic trance/acid trance] # # Dance 2 Trance - We Came in Peace [1990] [classic trance] # Another contender for first trance song ever created. Whether this track came first, or Age of Love is questionable, but the quality of this little masterpiece is indisputable. Almost like minimal goa, mixed with James Holden-esque progressive (but of course, it predates all of that). It's reminiscent of being on the moon, or on the surface of an alien world: exactly the way trance should sound. # # Underworld - Dark Train [1994] [classic trance] # # Infected Mushroom - Mush Mushi [goa trance/psytrance] # # Paul Van Dyk - For an Angel [1994] [epic trance] # # Push - Strange World [2001] [anthem trance] # # Humate & Rabbit In The Moon - East (Opium Den Mix) [1995] [classic trance/acid trance] # # The MFA - The Difference it Makes [2004] [minimal trance/neo-trance] # {arguable - progressive house} # # Cybernaut - Hydroponix [1997] [goa trance/psytrance] # # Datura - Yerba Del Diablo [1992] [classic trance/acid trance] # {I find it's a lot like psytrance/goa trance, but this isn't a bad thing.} # # Phobia - Phobia (DJ Hell mix) [1991/2007] [classic trance/acid trance] # What actually makes the DJ Hell 2007 mix different from the 1991 original is pretty minimal (ha. ha. no.), but it seems to do the trick, elevating what was already a trance classic into the neo-trance masterpiece it was always meant to be. Really though, everything that made the track so incredible to begin with is there, and everything added on could have been created back in 1991. But it rounds it out perfectly. # It's rather dark trance. The anchoring melody is simply a two note depth charge interspersed with a transmission-like voice ("let me have silence") and a strangely affecting diva wail, held down by a circular acid line that eventually dissolves into quasi-anthemic territory (a la Acid Eiffel, which it actually transcends). Everything here is simple and effective, and reminiscent of floating in space past a rocky wasteland moon, no power in the ship, unable to navigate, fleeing alien depth charges. Or perhaps it's like being under the ocean on an alien planet in almost complete blackness and silence but for the occasional bursts of extraterrestrial explosives seeking to destroy your submarine, hidden in the deep, the power. # This is also a flagpost of what seems to be a classic trance revival of sorts brought about by an adoring minimal community (some of whom floated out of classic trance-land in the first place, fleeing the epic anthem boom of the late 90s. You know who I mean. Sven Vath. Stephan Bodzin.) # # Etnica - Moon Influence [1996] [goa trance/psytrance] # # Yahel - Voyage [2000] [psytrance/epic trance] # # Patrick Chardronnet - Eve By Day (Ripperton mix) [2006] [minimal trance/neo-trance] # # Binary Finary - 1998 [1998] [anthem trance] # Note: 1999 and 2000 are the same track, re-released for more guiltless radioplay and club spinning. Although why this odd norm exists at all is beyond me. If you still like the track, just keep playing it. Don't buy it again with a different date stamped on the cover, just so you can label yourself "upfront." # # Union Jack - Red Herring [1995] [acid trance] # # The Thrillseekers - Synaesthesia [1999] [epic trance] # # Leftfield - Phat Planet [1999] [deep trance] # {arguable - progressive house} # # Atlantic Ocean - Waterfalls [1993] [anthem trance] # {arguable - anthem house} # # DJ Tiesto - Suburban Train [2001] [epic trance] # # James Holden - Nothing (93 Returning mix) [2003] [progressive trance] # # Roland Appel - Dark Soldier [2007] [minimal trance/neo-trance] # # Efdemin - Lohn & Brot [2007] [minimal trance/neo-trance] # "Minimal" has gotten so trancy this year that almost all of the best new tracks warrant (high) places on this list. # This is the only trance track on the entire list that I fell in love with during the opening bar (Those first three notes are actually truly beautiful, and even if the track didn't go anywhere from there it would still warrant a place somewhere on this list as the best filler of all time). I don't even cut this track up in my iPod playlist. # {arguable - minimal. But argue with me that it's really minimal and not trance at all and I'll actually beat you down. I will find out where you live, and I will beat you down. It's got breakdowns, dammit, BREAKDOWNS. Yeah, minimal. 18. I just listened to some of your tracks. I like the atmosphere you are trying to create, but your mix is seriously fucked up man. You're way too loud, and you need to cut off some frequencies on your VST channels( with EQ). I don't know what sequencer you are using, but it sounds like fruityloops, here is what i suggest, give it a try, (if it's fruityloops): -send all your tracks to a seperate FX channel. -turn off all FX plugins -close all the faders -start mixing your tracks, fader by fader, stay under 0Db, RED = wrong, that's about the only absolute rule in (digital) audio, aim for -6 to -3 Db. -turn on the FX again and remix if needed. -use the fruity multiband compressor on the master channel (standard in FLstudio 7), and use the preset "mastering 6Db". You can play around with it to get a desired loudness effect. -add parametric EQ 2 & Db meter to every channel (you can also use the send channels if you have percussion sets spread over different FX channels) -start your track, and experiment with the parametric EQ (don't create a mount everest, use it subtle) and watch the Db meter. in the FX mixer you can easily solo a channel by rightclicking the green dot under the Db meter. The FX mixer has Db meters but i prefer to use the fruity Db meter plugin because the numbers are next to it, it's more accurate. (some VST's in your tracks need to be cutted on high frequencies, try as much settings as possible, it is impossible to do a decent EQ in 10 sec., at least for me ) -If a VST still sounds too distant or loud, use a compressor or limiter. Don't start compressing everything, i only use it when i think i need to, while an EQ is almost on every channel. happy experimenting. Click Here if you want to listen to some music i made. (evolution & the abyss suck, other tracks are decent, medusa is my personal fav.)
  19. Mastering is like looking for the holy grail. In most parts of audio engineering, there is no right or wrong just a personal style you have to develop and try to exclude the "experimental" sound. Mastering is the only thing that is uniform, it makes your track fit into a genre. Mastering is different for every genre, and imo, has mostly to do with loudness and use of specific plugins (mostly compressors, EQ & limiters), after you mixed the track. take my advise with an open mind, But here is how I most of the time try to handle mastering. 1. first i create my tracks 2. I mix them, add FX plugins (reverb, delay, etc) then the track is finished. 3. finally, i add multiband compressor on the master to make it louder and adjust tonal balance, I use limiters, compressors & EQ's on track channels if the multiband makes my previous unmastered mix clip. don't take this way of working as true audio mastering, but just talking from a noob to a noob, this is a good way to start. AS far as i understand it, mastering is adjusting your audiolevels & tonal balance to make it fit in the genre you are producing. I noticed you can't just learn this in 1 day, not even in several years. It's very technical, with no creative input, so most of the time, i don't feel motivated enough to care about it. The waves budle with the linear phase multibandcompressor is what i use most of the times, but i suggest you start with something else, cause this plugin is fucking insane, very good, but very difficult, i don't even fully understand it,i just stick to my presets that worked in the past for the genre i'm making and start from there to adjust my track. +it is really expensive, luckely the company i work for has a license so i got it free. I hope this helped
  20. sequencers: fruityloops reason cubase protools abelton live logic sonar MOTU vsts: Rob Papen Vst's predator, albino Zt3a+, or something like that Refx (vangaurd) not for the übernoob: Sequencers can load vst's(=softsynths)
  21. Saai in dutch means Boring, and actually that name fits today's music very well, saai-trance. name noted.
