  1. Artist: Maiia Title: Shining Dragon Label: Mystic Sound Records Date: March, 2017 1. Tale About the Shining Dragon 2. Princess From the North 3. Natural Energy (Album Mix) 4. Maiia303 - Electric Particles (Maiia GoaChill Remix) 5. Microcosmos (Instrumental Mix) 6. Fusion Age (Album Mix) 7. Eastern Saloon 8. Strawberry Lassy (Album Mix) 9. The Great Bear (Album Mix) 10. Kurbeats - Phony Phony (Maiia Remix) Yes, very interesting. This is Alla Vagner who should be familiar to all who frequent this forum based on her 2014 release Sky In Diamonds on Ovnimoon Records. It was a pleasant surprise and a breath of fresh air to hear the organic sound melded with goa trance. Sure it 's been done before, but man did she do it well. She gets right after it with the goa tinged breakbeat track Tale About the Shining Dragon and Natural Energy. I believe that she is the female equivalent to Hardfloor. Funky breakbeats layered with that saucy 303 riding shotgun. It's truly body moving music with eerie tones layered over top. Mysterious at times, but always engaging with plenty of tribal affects. Check out Strawberry Lassy...lots of Shponglese going on there. She keeps the tracks relatively short for maximum freshness. While not as eye opening as Diamonds, it nonetheless doesn't fail to impress. Mystic Sound Records Bandcamp
  2. Artist: Psychedelic Quest Title: Morning Trip Ep Label: Timewarp Records Date: March, 2017 1. Morning Trip 2. Crystal Moon 3. Lunar Circles 4. Crazy Forest Dude....where are the f*cking cookies? That's how this short digital ep from longtime producer Leonidas Giotis makes me feel. The sound is great, but it is what I term new school stagnant. It finds one groove and rides it all the way home. It's got a very happy and uplifting sound, but man it just doesn't go anywhere. All the tracks have similar arpeggios and feel a hell of a lot longer than they are. Sorry, but I cannot recommend this one. Far too weak on depth and details. Timewarp Bandcamp

  4. Artist: Omnivox Title: Innerpolarity 10 Years Remix Ep Label: Self Released Date: February, 2017 1. Mayana (2017 Remix) 2. City of Black Lights (2017 Remix) 3. Over the Clouds (2017 Remix) Long ago, in a galaxy far away there was a project called Vox and he released and album called Innerpolarity. Goa wasn't as available back then, so this was a welcome treat to hear new talent. Since then he changed his name to Omnivox and released the blistering Fragments of Evolution which you should already have in your collection. Here is a blurb describing the ep: "Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Saturday to Sunday." Ummm...that's not what it says. You just quoted a line from the Black Eyed Peas. Did I? So I did. Sorry, here it is. "I'mma make you my b*tch / Cake, cake, cake, cake / Cake, cake, cake, cake / Cake, cake, cake, cake / Cake, cake, cake." Nope. That's Rihanna. Wonder how many ghost writers were hired for that? Try again. Damn, thought for sure that was it. Ok got it... "My hump, my hump, my hump (ha), my lovely lady lumps (Check it out)." BEP's again. Dude you're stupid. The ep consists of 3 tracks the artist believes are the best from the album which stand the test of time. I really liked that album so I was curious to see 1) which tracks he chose and 2) what he could do with them. He's right those three tracks were really good to begin with, and the remixes are actual remixes. So refreshing. Some new leads, some more layers, all whilst keeping the outer space goa vibe the same. As you would expect the tracks sound fuller maybe due to improved technology. Bottom line, even though they aren't particularly memorable I enjoyed listening to them. Omnivox Bandcamp - Name your price, but don't be a cheap bastard.
  5. Artist: Shivax Title: Victory Anthems Label: Sita Records Date: September, 2014 1. Initiation 2. Unknown Source 3. Ganesha-Shanti (Feat. Agneton) 4. Victory Anthems 5. Acid Horns 6. Filterizations 7. A King's Tribute 8. Agneton - Het Was Zomer (Shivax Remix) 9. The Iron Throne Nitzhonot. This is how I feel when I hear it. Now I love riding coasters so you would think that would be a good thing, but sometimes I find it so exhausting. Oftentimes I feel it can sound like kiddie music and I don't mean to insult the artists who produce it. Music is very personal and nitzhonot is an acquired taste. Sometimes it gets a little too crazy and key changey as it rampages up and down the scales. Kinda like when the chipmunks do a cover song. But that's just me and my not so humble opinion. And that's where I was with his first album. His second album has shown a little more mastery in blending goa trance with his nitzho and thereby not making it so tiring. When he gets in a good goa groove he lets it sit there a bit, allowing the listener to fully absorb it before whisking them off on a nitzho tangent. When he goes full goa trance on tracks like Acid Horn he shines, proving himself more than capable. For those that like his niztho style he still cranks up the speed and gets to ludicrous speed on tracks like Filterizations and Victory Anthems. Remixing a pop song is generally a bad idea as they usually turn out to be terrible, but track 9 is his take on the Game of Thrones theme. It was meh. So I would say from a goa lover's perspective this is an improvement over his first album, but not enough to find broad appeal. If you don't like nitzo, give this one a pass. 6. Artist: Various Title: Cybertrance 6 - Derniere Edition Label: Fairway Records Date: 1998 1. Jeremiah - Exotic Intercourse 2. Union Jack - Yeti 3. DJ Jan - X-Santo 4. Bypass Unit - Higher Spirituality 5. Nuclear Hyde - Accelerator 6. Equator - Last Mission 7. The Secret - The Munk Files (Acid Munk) 8. Canyon - Blackout 9. Der Stern Von Afrika - Downhill V.2 (Massimo Vivona Remix) 10. The Light - Expand The Room Anyone else utter a barely audible "f*ck" when the style on Discogs reads Trance, Goa Trance? No? Just me then? Oh well, when I see that it usually means some sh*t that I'm not going to like. For example the "reaching into my brain" sample during X-Santo. Yeah that's annoying. Even goa trance superstar project Bypass Unit basically phones it in with Higher Spirituality. There is a barely restrained 303 in The Munk Files, but it cannot support the considerable tonnage of suck emanating from this compilation. Unfortunately instead of going out with a bang they dissolve with a whimper. This is full of trance cliches and could just as easily be titled Cybertrance 6 - Aw f*ck it Edition. Usually when a label rolls out a final edition it's because the release is a steaming pile of sparkle farts and they've got nothing left in the tank or the label heads took all the money and cocaine and hopped a cessna to an island paradise with very lax extradition laws. Clearly there's evidence of the former and based on my imagination probably some of the latter.
  7. Artist: Various Title: The Prophets of Psychedelic Trance Label: Trance Medusa Records Date: 1996 1. Cool - Brain Surgery 2. Electric Universe - Sunset Skyline 3. Evolution - Alien Phenomenon 4. A-Tek - Antologan 5. Mono Substance - Midnight Sunrise 6. Factor - Orientrance 7. B(if)tek - They Oscillate 8. S.U.N. Project - Tribolus 9. Proton - Brainfusion This will be a short review cause there really isn't much to say, but since this is a compilation from the glory days of goa trance I felt it needed a topic. THE track here is Alien Phenomenon by Evolution, a good old belter in the tradition of growly goa trance. Sunset Skyline is of course great, but offered in a bunch of other compilations. If I had to pick a bronze medal it would go to Midnight Sunrise with its industrial, primal scream and dark atmosphere. Hardly essential, but track 3 is a must hear.
  8. Artist: Various Title: POF Trance Collector Vol. 2 Label: POF Music Date: 1996 1. Denshi Danshi - Cow's Blues 2. The Infonaut - Chronos (Time Undefined) 3. Amanite FX & Prana - Black Rain (Blue Planet Corporation Mix) 4. Synchro - Christine (Haunted Car Radio Mix) 5. Denshi Danshi - Mariposa 6. The Infonaut - Mind Directed Energy 7. Amanite FX & Prana - Black Rain (Original Mix) 8. Synchro - Babes On Broomsticks 9. Amtinaous - Apocalyps-Hilan 10. Universal Island - M-Stick Collecting something specific is so tiring. I mean it's not like I'm trying to see how many prostitute heads I can hang on the wall, but...Haggling with people over price is the best part of the hunt, but it can be quite draining. Maybe that's why we as collectors are never finished because as soon as we posses the obeject we need another something to chase. I bought this off Discogs for only one track, but it turns out there is much more to enjoy. Of course the BPC remix of Black Rain is what I was after, but you also get the original version. Strange, but appreciated. You get possibly the best track by Synchro (if such a thing is actually possible) Babes On Broomsticks and a couple of decent offerings by Denshi Danshi with the best being Mariposa. Mind Directed Energy is the best track from The Infonaut, but the whole album was a pleasant surprise. This is good goa from the glory days with tracks that haven't been beaten to f*cking death and worth a purchase.

  10. Title: Inti Label: Suntrip Records Release date: 19.04.2016 Tracklist: 1) Ovnimoon - Invocation 2) Triquetra - Renkinjutsu 3) Jagoa - Perverse Polymorph 4) Morphic Resonance - Varese Dream 5) Triquetra - Destroying Dinosaur 6) Celestial Intelligence - Distorted Visions 7) Mindsphere - Harmonic Garden 8) Crossing Mind - Entropy (First Edition) 9) Sykespico - Glimmers Of Sunrise Inti means "sun" in quechua. We have a cover art of a sun rising in all its glory and the release comes from SUNtrip. Convenient! Im not a big fan of Suntrip, especially not recently. Floating, sunshine-filled and butterfly infested soundscapes are not my thing. The reason why I am taking the initiative of writing this is because of the HUGE names I see in this comp. Now, the way I do these reviews is write the intro, play a track and write the first impression of it as that is what I value the most. So this going to be a raw, empirical and intellectually unbiased review! 1) Ovnimoon - Invocation: Now, I know Ovnimoon as a psy-trance artist, not goa, and that is why I was surprised to see him here. The track builds-up pretty quickly and Im surprised by the recipe here. Hardhitting and somewhat dark-ish. The tempo is amazing and the moment the acid kicks in its a bliss. I definitely wasnt expecting something like this! @4:00......... a salve of chills went down my spine! AMAZING. One climax after the other! Ovnimoon needs to take into consideration to do a full length goa album! 7/7 2) Triquetra - Renkinjutsu: Triquetra are Elric and Jurian Reinartz, brothers I suppose? They are pretty new and its awesome to see new faces in the scene! Again, hard and dark. I think Suntrip realised that the sun is also a 4.5 billion year old megaball of fire which will consume the star system as we know it one day. The feeling of the track reminds me somewhat of the feeling I had when I heard Howling At The Moon by Cosmosis, with its lightsaber-like melodies which feel like theyre slicing your brain into thousands of coronal sections. Orgasmic build-up all over the track. A great track! Good job, Triquetra! 6.5/7 3) Jagoa - Perverse Polymorph: Not to repeat myself, the album continues in its thematic direction.Ok, this thing is plain EVIL! A track for parties definitely as it's very rhythmic and simple. Its nothing special but it does it's job. Simply put, It's good! 5/7 4) Morphic Resonance - Varese Dream: We all know what to expect from this guy, AACCIIDD! A bit unconventional track considering his style in The City Of Moons. He builds up the track patiently and doesn't go overboard with chaos as he did in his album (which wasnt bad at all.) But even though it is a bit more serious as I said, there isnt much that is gripping my attention and its a bit crude to my ears. A touch above average 4.5/7 5) Triquetra - Destroying Dinosaur: These dudes again! They must be doing something right if Suntrip gave them 2 slots on their new release. Lets see... What I hear is youth energy, careful planning, a balance between an adrenaline rush and a story. The track is good IMHO! Their sound and style sits very well with me. 5/7 6) Celestial Intelligence - Distorted Visions: The kings of melodies are back! At some moments the track feels a bit foresty! Its pulsating in such a way and it feels very experimental to me. A unique experience. 5.5/7 7) Mindsphere - Harmonic Garden: HIER KOMMT DIE SONNE! and with it comes floatiness. God... This track feels incredibily out of place, but then again, I never liked Mindsphere's style. Even despite that fact, this track faired pretty well but its a thorn in my eye. It simply doesnt fit 4/7 8) Crossing Mind - Entropy (First Edition): Funny Crossing Mind decided to name this track Entropy, for it is its opposite. Melodies that remind me of BPC and at times it hints uplifting trance(?) All in all, a mid-tempo track with deep-minded and melancholic melodies. Dawn is upon us! 4.5/7 9) Sykespico - Glimmers Of Sunrise: You feel the X-rays warming your skin, you feel the wind's caresses and the sand tingling the soles of your feet. Its light, but its not floating. Its epic, sophisticated and vast just like the importance of our Sun. Its source is bright and endless, she resuscitates the hopeless. Without her, we are lifeless satellites drifting! I couldn't have asked for a better conclusion to this compilation. It deserves my epic seal of approval! 7/7 Phew, what an experience! From the chaotic darkness that the first part of the compilation represents (to me) to the sunrise, kindness and blissful melodies... This release made me realise that I spend too much time indoors. I will definitely remember this release and I highly recommend it to everyone! Favorite track: 1. 13. Artist: Various Title: Ascending Label: Melusine Records Date: December, 2016 1. Lauge - For Evigt Og Altid 2. Logical Elements - Flower Nebula (Original Mix) 3. Olexa - Miss Spring 4. Ancient Core - Caracatitza Cuantica din Oceanul Mecanic 5. E-Mantra - Ascending (Live Version) 6. Lifebloom - Rest In Self 7. Reasonandu - Immerse 8. Metamorphosis & The Adaptive - The Long Way Home 9. Cabeiri - Uranus' Seed 10. E-Mantra - Daydream (Dense Mix) 11. Saranankara - Awakening 12. Jaraluca - Spiritual Transformation 13. Ascent & Argus - One Day In India This digital release (24 bits) is from the label started by E-mantra and Reasonandu. It's a charity release with all the profits going towards underprivileged and abandoned children in Constanta. I won't pretend to know where that is, but doing good is universal. This is a long release at over 100 minutes and it contains quite the variety of music. A few mentions...All of the tracks have a good amount of depth in them and I didn't find one that was subpar. I'm not one for beatless ambient unless it's time for night night, but you get a couple of tracks of that here. Flower Nebula is a gentle and silky smooth progressive track that screams sunshine and the promise of a hopeful future. E-mantra has a couple of really good tracks here and they flow in the same vein as his downtempo releases. The music varies from utterly relaxing to strong, beat oriented downtempo with tribal touches. For example a track like Uranus' Seed has all of the above. While Awakening wasn't anything special, the middle break hit me just right. Shame it was so short. The fastest track belongs to Jaraluca and it is unapologeticaly goa. Mid tempo swagger stuff. And lastly if you like female Indian vocals than the closing track is your holy grail set amongst a head nodding beat. All in all a very good quality release and for a good cause. Recommended! 15. Artist: Enertopia Title: Magic For Eternity Label: Krembo Records Date: 1997 1. Intro 2. Broken Sky 3. The Shout of a Headman 4. Marakesh 2000 5. Novelle 6. Van Spooker 7. Manga 8. Volvoker 9. Wacky 10. Marteff 10a. Untitled "You're not ready for so much excitement!" To further drive home the point that not everything released in 1997 was gold comes the debut of Emiliano Solazzi Griminger. His second album Face Adaptor was appealing to me in a I don't know why I like this, but I do kind of way. With a heavy techno influence this has a raw and electric feel. With that description it should be appealing in a cold and dark way, but something is missing. There are melodies of course, but they sound abrasive rather than melodic. Marakesh 2000 isn't bad and with it's power and symphonic layers reminds me a little of a Kris Kylven production. He goes a little heavy on the sample usage in Van Spooker (even though I like the sample) and then annoys the crap out of me with a looped vocal tacet on Volvoker. For one final insult with the last track he adds some more music after an extended silence. I hate that. Ask me if it made any f*cking difference with the overlook of this album. Pass.
  16. Artist: Filteria Title: Perpetually Delayed Voyage Ep Label: Lost Language Date: March, 2013 1. Perpetually Delayed Voyage (Original) 2. Perpetually Delayed Voyage (Sonic Entity Mix) 3. Perpetually Delayed Voyage (Konektiv Mix) Jannis Tzikas is a pillar in the goa trance community and a major reason for its resurgence and continued popularity. His album from 2004 Sky Input was musical napalm and just what was needed at the time. Also it was the first release from a then fledgling Suntrip Records. Hard to believe it's been 13 years. This little ep came out before Filteria's last album Lost In The Wild and is interesting as it consists of a goa track and then two progressive remixes of that track. Released by a label with a long history it's available in digital or a Cd-r format. Although I don't know where you would get the Cd-r as it doesn't seem available at the Lost Language site. Perpetually Delayed Voyage is in the vein of his last two albums fluid with smooth melodies instead of the chaotic bombast with which he burst onto the scene. The Sonic Entity mix retains the goa flavor of the original yet spreads it out over something you might hear from Iono or Ovnimoon. The Konektiv Mix has a housey feel; close and connected if not a bit dark. Enjoyable. Beatport

  19. Artist: Cactus Arising Title: The Remixes Ep Label: Timewarp Records Date: 2016 1. Radical Distortion - The Dreamer (Cactus Arising Remix) 2. Fiery Dawn - Mahakala (Cactus Arising Remix) 3. InnerZone - Universal Enlightenment (Cactus Arising rmx) 4. Spectrum - Medi teranno (Cactus Arising rmx) Cactus Arising is a Greek duo which had their debut Star Storm a few years ago and it uh...hmmm. Well let's just stay it failed to impress. So now they release a digital Ep of remixes on prodigious Timewarp Records. The Dreamer- The original on Suntrip's Opus Iridium by Radical Distortion was a smash with a superb lead melody. It never let up. This remix is a little more subdued but still contains good melodies. Mahakala- Fiery Dawn's track found on his Cosmic Ascension EP is a steady does of crackling 303. The remix is a layered treat that may rival the original. Furious! Good job! Universal Enlightenment- The next two tracks I have never heard so...blank canvas you know? It was a nice layered track, but had that...unfinished or raw quality. Decent, but not very distinctive. Medi Terrano- The little blurb on Discogs mentions that they like to close their sets with this track. And I can see why. There is a lot of energy here with a nice balance of power and dreamlike quality. Great track! While I wasn't a fan of their debut this little digital ep shows that they have talent and they understand that a remix isn't just a carbon copy. That alone endears them to me. While not superb, it's a good little ep and I look forward to their next album. Timewarp Records Bandcamp
  20. Artist: Goasia Title: Defected Reactor Ep Label: Spacedock Records Date: March, 2015 1. Defected Reactor 2. We Live There I recently went a little bandcamp crazy and bought a bunch of digital eps without even listening to the samples. This was one of them. We are all familiar with this duo and I believe they are in the category of love 'em or don't love 'em that much. This ep should be a cautionary tale of always listening before you buy. This music damn near put me to sleep. No drama, no gravity, hell no goa. The second half of We Live There was pretty good, but not enough to save the experience. These tracks smack of some noodling made awhile ago and then just thrown out there. I will actually go on record saying this is the worst thing I have ever heard from Goasia. I'm not even sure it's them or some computer generated midi program. Spacedock Records Bandcamp
  21. Artist: Various Title: Inner Universe Vol. 1 Label: Manatargaq Music Date: September, 2016 1. p2 - Pure Sense 2. Cosmic Harmony - Crow & Owl 3. Omneon - Small Planet 4. Fiery Dawn - Juggernaut 5. Laatoka - Pillars of Creation 6. Fiery Dawn & Nova Fractal & Omneon - Kalachakra 7. Sinhu - Future Technology 8. Tavi - Mandovi 9. Quron - Expansion "I think he just can't do much of anything for himself!" Like a Republican politician's first time in heels this offering stumbles out of the gate, never managing to gain its footing. You know you're in a bit of trouble when the promo is is a smorgasbord of poor grammar and punctuation. Most of the artists are "up and coming" and unfortunately you can hear it in the quality of the tracks. Nothing terrible per se, but very formulaic with average sound choices and not a lot of oomph. There are a couple of bright spots with one of them being wicked f*cking good. Future Technology by Sinhu is a searing old school track that is miles above the rest here. Mantargaq Music Bandcamp
  22. Artist: Various Title: Goa Trance Legacy Label: Spacedock Records Date: October, 2015 1. Digicult & U-Recken - Into The Heartland (Astral Projection Remix) 2. Power Source - Sparks (Remix) 3. Goasia - Haunted 4. Filteria - Memory Lane (Future Live Remix) 5. M-Run - Last Survivor 6. Omnivox - I Am The Storm 7. Prana - Boundless (ManMadeMan Remix) 8. Psychowave - Catch The Rabbit 9. Shakta - Amber Mantra This was the first compilation from upstart Spacedock Records and like the second one in the series it brought together a great line up. There are no unknowns here. Just veterans of the scene with some old schoolers represented. Right off the bat we get yet another Astral Projection Remix that was also featured on the Digicult album Soul Samadhi. It's really quintessential Astral isn't it? With it's shiny layers and pounding beat. Maybe one day when my kids have put me in a nursing home they'll release some new material. But probably another ep of remixes as a final f*ck you before I die. Power Source is back with a remix of a track that was found on an ep they released back in 2011. Never heard it because I never thought Power Source was that good anyway. Sure Goaway is great as is Memory Bubbles and I'll give you Granada...but that's it! On to the track, they have a sound in there that sounds like an alarm went off in a Tesco when you tried to walk out without paying for your girl's maxi pads because you're embarrassed. Be a man. They know it's not for you. Is it buttercup? It's a positive, shiny track that's a little too full-on. Like if Erasure made goa. Goasia is one of those projects that you either love or you think they're cheese merchants. I think they're great. Sure they're a little quirky, but so is Uncle Ted. Just don't sit on his lap at Thanksgiving. And this track is quirky, but fun. I like that it keeps changing, always staying very lively. Not bad, if a little long. Filteria needs no introduction and he's earned his bones with four great albums, but I've never heard this track. Sounds very Heliopolis. There are several breaks so there's ample time to reorganize. Pretty good. M-run authored one of my favorite goa albums in Some Run Just For Fun, and with this long beast he gets crazy. It's fast paced, powerful and that lead is like dancing on the sun. Relentlessly psychedelic. Great track. Fragments of Evolution (also released on Spacedock) was a melodic and powerful tour de force and this track is no different. Plenty of motion and leads that leave char marks. The ManMadeMan remix of Prana's Boundless is one of the most psychedelic tracks I've ever heard. All power and bubbly liquid it's super intense and futuristic. Golden! Psychowave is heard from much (still haven't listened to his album yet), but the stuff I have heard was really good. Here he slays with writhing 303's and adds an operatic female voice. Gives it a layer of eerie above the power. Gets a little weird near the end and the strings don't quite fit. Other than that it's pretty great. Amber Mantra by Shakta was pretty obscure until Suntip put it on his release. Great old school track that hasn't lost any steam. Way to go Spacedock, you pretty much nailed it with this one. Spacedock Records Bandcamp
  23. Artist: Various Title: Goa Trance Legacy 2 Label: Spacedock Records Date: January, 2017 1. Artha - First Element Is Gone 2. Hypnagogia - Launching Green Lights 3. Omegahertz - Ecliptic Conjunction 4. Power Source - Goaway (2016 Mix) 5. M-Run - Trans Our Way 6. Goasia - Secret of Nazak 7. Prana - Derwish (Funky Gong Remix) 8. Total Eclipse - Blade Runner (Remix) 9. E-Mantra - You Are Empty Spacedock is sort of an outlier when it comes to the more well known labels, doing more with digital eps. That isn't to say they are a throwaway by any stretch with releases like the first in this series as well as Fragments of Evolution by Omnivox. With the second album of this series they have assembled quite the track list. The cover sports the same Matrix-esque style as the previous iteration just in blue, but let's see what's inside. First Element is Gone- Wow, why does Artha save his best stuff for compilations and Ep's? I wasn't thrilled with his latest Dream Telepathy, but this was absolutely brilliant in every single way. It evolved and twisted the whole way through. The more I listened the more I liked it with its crazy leads and M-run groove. Stellar opener! Launching Green Lights- This was sci-fi goa with sparkly and nimble lead sounds. There was a period where it seemed to lose steam, but still pretty good overall. Ecliptic Conjunction- Omegahertz took a giant step forward with the release of his last album Stax and this track also has some good 303 screech and bark. Good stuff. Goaway (2016 Mix)- Perhaps the most famous track in the Power Source catalog so it baffles me why one would remix an already fantastic track. I really can't tell that much difference between this and the original. Did you make it louder? See, and maybe it's just me, but ideally you take a track that is a bit on the weak side and attempt to make it better. It's a great track, but putting a remix label on it seems a bit disingenuous. Trans Our Way- His album Some Run Just For Fun is an absolute favorite of mine and I've been waiting for the next one with much anticipation. This is light and bouncy with a pretty simple bass line that I would consider good. Not great, and nowhere near his epic stuff from his album. What happened here? Secret of Nazak- This is another track that I felt was good, but not great. I felt my mind begin to wander half way through. New school through and through that could've used some more variation. Derwish (Funky Gong Remix)- I have never heard this track before so this is found money. This is a remix by Minoru Tsunoda who also remixed another Prana track Boundless on the Prana Remixes album from Suntrip. It's kind of eerie and has some really great bounce. He did a lot with a little. Blade Runner (Remix)- Any time I see Blade Runner I expect a grand science fiction atmosphere. I remember that the original was pretty good but had annoying sounds like the descending aliens from Galaga. Now those are still here (damnit!), but the rest of the track is more subdued with gentler sounds. Sounds less harsh, but also a little less interesting. Anyone else think of Jaws when you heard this? You Are Empty- An E-mantra track that is smooth, dreamy, uplifting...Can't go wrong! A good album that disappointed in a few spots, but was pleasantly surprising in others! Spacedock Records Bandcamp
  24. Artist: DNA Title: Virtual Jungle Label: Zion 604 Date: December, 2016 1.Chakra & Avi - Insignificant Form Of Life (DNA Remake) 08:14 2. Phreaky - The Second Moon (DNA Remake) 06:50 3.Joti & Avi - Etheogenic Spiral (DNA Remake) 07:46 4.Joti & Avi - Solid Bubbles (DNA Remake) 07:21 5.Dino & Avi - Tango Electro (DNA Remake) 07:53 6.Oli & Avi - Nuclear Fissionchips (DNA Remake) 06:59 "It's amazing!" No, it's not. But I'll get there. Zion 604 is a wonderful label which specializes in releasing hard to find goa trance or stuff that was never released. They do some artist stuff as well and for the most part have been (and rightly so) lauded for their efforts. Their latest is an update on an old-school album Virtual Jungle. Well...kinda. I mean 4 of the tracks are missing and they added Insignificant Form of Life. These aren't remixes just updates done by DNA, otherwise known as Dan Komen and Avi Alga..Avi Algaran...Space Cat. First let me say that this is far from my favorite goa album. The original was decent and quite good in places, but I could take it or leave it. I was gonna do a track by track review, but the more I listened to them the more I realized that what I was going to say for one track goes for all of them. The sound is much improved. Warmer and clearer with more punch. The groove is more out front and it sounds like something from Zion. I had forgotten some of these and it made me remember how psychedelic tracks like Solid Bubbles is. Here's where the disappointment comes in. Even though the sound is vastly improved now we have just ok tracks that sound better. I never listen to samples so I was hoping that they would do whatever juju magic they seem to have and make a diamond out of a zirconium. They did not. Mostly Couple things. Even though aurally it is super some of the tracks are missing that punch, that fury. The Second Moon is one of them. It's like they took the drama out of it. Nuclear Fissionchips wasn't a great track to start with, but the remake just made that more clear. Bottom line I think it's a good maxi-Ep (that's what it is), but with the quality of their output I cannot help but be a little disappointed that they didn't do more with this. One thing I will say...that cover is awesome. Zion604 Bandcamp

Certainly there have been worse goa trance compilations than this, but is that the bar we're setting for ourselves? Don't know about you, but ain't nobody got time for mediocre muisc, much less a whole damn album of it. Most of this is filler without anything remarkable. No big layers, no driving beats, no total sound immersion... Suppose a couple of tracks can be listened all the way through, but again...low bar. For a year that is one of the greatest as far as goa trance is concerned nobody's putting this in the hall of fame.
