  1. I really liked this album. It's smooth with a floating atmosphere composed of many melodies. Lush to be sure without any jarring moments or obvious filler. The only track I didn't care for was Melodramadelic. The style while enjoyable (and as others have mentioned) wasn't particularly groundbreaking, but since when was it a negative to make an album full of great tracks? Since never that's when. Great job Ali and this should be in every goa fan's collection.
  2. I hate to speak ill of the dead, but...wait, hold up...is Children dead? Sooooo....that's a no? Damn, sorry man I meant no offense. But now I don't feel so bad about saying his review sucked lacked a bit of detail. So let's see what we can do to remedy that. First off is anyone under the illusion that the projects not labelled as Astral Projection aren't Astral Projection? No? Good because we couldn't continue if you insisted on being stupid. Yeah I know Discogs doesn't "definitively" say, but wink wink and sh*t. As some have mentioned this is far from essential as I'm quite sure you have all the necessary Astral tools in your toolbox. Their tracks can be found on any number of compilations. The other projects sound just like them so if you like the Astral doof doof kick sound then this is a way to get some more stuff in that vein. The brief crowd noise on Power Gen isn't obtrusive and doesn't bother me. Channeling sounds great and couldn't be more Astral if their identical twins made it. The original Life on Mars was as outstanding as the Domestic remix from the In The Mix album was shitty. "Look I remixed Astral! I'm super awesome!" That's why you don't give kids power tools. The Oforia mix is certainly darker and pretty funky to boot even if it sounded a little too full-oney. The SFX remix is where it's at with enough to make it different whilst keeping the spirit of the original. Ten Minutes to Sunset is typical Astral mesmorization. I'd never heard it so it's like a new track for me. But seriously, you cannot tell me that isn't them. What's that? Oh, it's Smashtral Confection? Well that explains it. The final downtempo track was too long for my tastes. Good, but not spectacular. I think this was a great CD. Even if Astral (wink wink) is behind all the tracks what's not to love? Sure they recycled a few tracks, but I had never heard some of the alias projects so that's discovered gold to these ears. As someone said, not essential, but if you are a fan of that very particular Astral sound (and I am) then this is worth your time surely.
  3. Artist: Various Title: Beyond Colour Label: TIP Records Date: June, 1998 1. GMS : 1.3 Crumbs 2. E-Rection : Out Here We Are Stoned (X-Dream Rmx) 3. Snake Thing : Blizzard Of Ooze 4. Organic Noise : Spastic Elastic 5. Systembusters : Godzilla 6. Psychopod : Friagram (GMS Refried Gram Mix) 7. Hallucinogen : Magik 8. Mudspirit : Worm Hole 9.Psychopod : Seriaf "An alien approached me. He started talking to me. I think he must've used some kind of raaaaaaaay. Or mind control device?" You might wanna get that checked out. No no...you don't have to shake my hand. Things grow on you. Usually that's a bad thing and then you have to deal with the painful urination, cold sores... *Looks at Imba* This guy knows what I'm talkin about! But this compilation has grown on me in a good way. Antibiotics not needed. I used to hate it bemoaning the absolute lack of Pleiadians style goa. There isn't much goa to be found here in the melodic goa sense of the word, but the psychedelic sounds and atmosphere is at alarming levels. Hazmat suit levels. It grabs at you, envelops you...Really this is some otherworldly sh*t. Ever get glue on your fingers? It's like that, but then goes all alien Spiderman suit on you and begins to take over your body. This was back when GMS didn't garner mandatory facepalms. And they have several tracks that will leave you a mess. Blizzard of Ooze reminds me of the awesome Ant Invasion from Planet Ben . Throw in the always chaotic Hallucinogen and Psychopod and you've got the makings of a psytrance classic. Great psytrance from that late 90's period that still had goa influences, but was more focused on psychedelic submersion.
  4. Superluminal was the biggest surprise from me. What a track! Wish those guys would've produced more.
  5. "Wrong answer f*ckbag!" Go to your room. I recently gave this another try to see if it still had the same magic it must've had when I bought it. Don't judge me, I'm sure you did a lot of crazy f*cked up shit back in the day too. Their later output was along the lines of dog poo in a flaming bag full-on, but I recall liking this. In the same way I recall liking Scooby Doo it seems. It only took 2 tracks when the vocoder came into play and I began to regret my decision. But the thread spoke of how great Wonderland was so I decided to keep going. Wow. That's it? Ooohhh-kay. If that was their biggest gun be prepared for a spit-ball fight. Guitar by track 5, yeah this is going just how I imagined it. Banana Banji was the most involved track for me, but then it's back to the eye rolling with a very annoying sample in Break Dance. Follow that with the coup de grace of suck Make Me Shake and the clearly misnamed Total Madness and that was enough for me. If you want my highly educated opinion in technical terms... This sucks.
  6. There's no disco in here. That's bullsh*t man. This is a compilation by the guys at Zion604 and it's a definite grower. What it is not is the layered melody heavy goa trance that we already have a lot of. It's not dark acidic goa either. If I had to put words to describe it I would say it's a more cerebral goa trance that works harder because of the lack of melody. Mixed together with psychedelic vibes and midtempo sway this can get a little raw on you (The Cure, Basic). Once you come to terms with the what it isn't then the journey becomes more enjoyable. The rhythm, the constant bumping rhythm was the star for me. And of course all the goa bubbling that contributed to that warm sound. Hats of to Space Cat for his mastering job, riding down the highway with this pumping in the car was an absolute pleasure. I'm sure it's getting harder and harder to re discover superb unreleased classics so eventually the quality of music had to take a dip. Personally I didn't find any blockbusters here. But like others have said this isn't bad at all and for most of the tracks my head was bouncing. And yeah the cover art is pretty damn sweet. Zion604 Bandcamp Beatspace Psyshop
  7. Artist: Various Title: Cascades of Life Label: Psynews Date: May, 2016 1. Imba - 604 Revolution 2. Profetia - Rage Against The Crashing 3. Colin OOOD & Goa Travellers - 100 Billion Neurons 4. BlackStarrFinale - Seige of Phobos 5. Phobium - Orbital Resonance 6. Nebula Meltdown - Didgeridreams 7. Dragon Twins - Foster 8. Cybernetika - Prismatic Reflection 9. Xenofish - Made Out of Stars 10. OneArcDegree feat. Georgia Irakli - The Tree Maiden "All of life is made of sound. I mean, everything vibrates." "There are 100 billion neurons in the brain. Everything you do...and everything you are." The world's number one psychedelic trance site is proud to present its next compilation which includes tracks from new and veteran artists. It's a potpourri of genres and there should be something there for everyone. Mastered by Deimos with artwork by Gasolin3 the compilation is free to download at Ektoplazm. In a classy move this was dedicated to one time Psynews moderator Nemo who we unfortunately lost this year. The first two tracks are quality straightforward goa trance that will move the body. Pure power. Leave it to Colin to soften the mood and provide a more relaxed feel that is no less spacey. That is until the climax throws razor sharp 303 daggers. BlackStarrFinale is back with what at first seems a cosmic downtempo track, but eventually morphs into a groovy, bouncy head nodder that lost none of its atmosphere. And speaking of atmosphere, Phobium's Orbital Resonance embraces the cold chill of space reminiscent of masters Tangerine Dream mixed with Vangelis. The cosmos is viewed in high definition as this long ambient track slowly but deliciously unfolds. Really that didn't feel like 11 minutes. The refused to be pigeon-holed Nebula Meltdown incorporates a smooth progressive didgeridoo in Didgeridreams that has a floaty quality. The most striking offering goes to Foster from Dragon Twins. Dark and eerie it gets up in your business in a hurry and at times reaches that nearly unbearable level of screechy. But that cunchy 303 madness tho...so satisfying. Lars Goosens (Cybernetika) can seemingly do no wrong with his brand of science fiction drum n bass and like the rest of you I'm salivating at the thought of his announced trilogy of music. The question here is how does he extend this track for over 11 minutes? And how does he keep it from getting boring? Xenofish delivers Made Out of Stars in a very similar vein only without many changes. If there was one track here that I felt suffered from being overlong it was this one. The Tree Maiden is a soft exit ambient tune with gentle vocals and the sound of falling water. Good job by everyone involved. The compilation doesn't disappoint and flows magnificently. As mentioned there is something in here for everyone so don't hesitate to download this. RIP Nemo! Free at Ektoplazm
  8. Artist: Various Title: Work It Out Label: Digital Distortion Records Date: December, 2006 1. Dark Nebula - Time To Burn 2. Technodrome - Stargazer 3. Binary - Headbang 4. Psyboriginal - Mellow Ohm 5. Stomp - The Crescendo 6. Tickets - Good Morning To Music 7. Killer Buds Vs. Energetic - System Action 8. Brethren - Arcane 9. Stomp - Chronicles Of Wafisha Yeah, this just isn't working out. It's not you...it's me. Ok, and you. I just, I just don't have the time nor the energy anymore. And if I'm being honest I don't like your appearance. I realize that may be shallow, but when I first met you you were bright and eye catching. The face you show the world now just looks thrown together with barely any effort. You'll never change. Full-on and stops and starts, it's what you do. Who you are. But it's 2016 now and you no longer have what I need. Everytime I listen to you I'm struck by your lack of depth. I've outgrown you. But hey, cheer up you'll move on and find a younger, less jaded audience. Someone who thrives on prominent bass lines and been there done that structure. With such low expectations you're bound to find someone new. I'll always care about you, but I need to spread my wings. Best of luck. Psyshop - That's the spirit. Put yourself out there!
  9. "Remember make sure you hit the floor when we come in, ok? Could get ugly in there." Yep...that's ugly. God bless you Gary Busey. Always a go to in gif land. I wished it had gotten ugly, but it didn't. These tracks were pretty good when they were released alas in 2016 most just don't hold up like they did. It's like Ormion said, some good some bad, but mostly just a big bowl of meh. Favorite would be Shift's Electroid with its punishing climax. Brings back the good old days of South African full-on. Allende was also nice.
  10. Artist: Lectro Spektral Daze Title: Totally Frictionless Surface EP Label: Goa Records Date: February. 2014 1. Speechless 2. Totally Frictionless Surface 3. The Shiva Danny Marshall from New Zealand released this EP back in 2014 and I have to say that I'm really surprised and impressed. Like...Rihanna on the other end of a left hook surprised. Where did this come from? If his latest album sounded like this I believe more eyes would've been opened. The goa is cosmic and continues to be interesting all the way through. The music is entrancing with plenty of layers to delve into. He uses driving rhythms that invites dancing and unleashes the power at the right times. Great stuff to get lost in. Beatport
  11. Artist: UX Title: Audissey: Live & Beyond Label: Anjuna Records Date: July, 2015 1. Slide - Waking Up To Chaos (Live Remix) 2. Pure Intellect (Live Remix) 3. Third Eye (Live Remix II) 4. Dominion (Digital Frontiers Live Remix) 5. Millennium Generation (Live Remix) 6. Cyberkrist - Crossworld (Götterdämmerung Live Mix) 7. Master of the Universe (Epic Live Remix) 8. Chrysalis (Judgement Day Live Mix) 9. Audissey (Excerpt) "Boundaries are good...They keep things separate." Ahhh...I remember when this was first announced. Everything was golden. Rainbows and unicorns. Cotton candy clouds and pixie stick joy that one of the masters of dark goa trance was going to release an album that we had been craving. Kris Kylven and Pete Martin made up UX back in the day and their debut album release Ultimate Experience is a classic foray into the dark and industrial side of goa trance. Understandably hopes were raised that this would be a return to the sound of greatness and bring back that rich, layered sound that we crave. Who knew that it would be accompanied by a monkey throwing sh*tstorm? From accusations of fake crowd noise, oft delayed release dates, anger issues, rumors, posted social media screenshots, the label turning on the artist whose album they're trying to release, anti-semitism...whew! So much drama y'all needed Dr. Phil on speed dial. But f*ck that I couldn't care less. You wanna dive into the mud go read the locked thread or the 11 page one. I'm sorry that friendships were ruined and bad feelings saturated the atmosphere of this release, but the only thing that matters is the music seeing the light of day. Which it did. Eventually. Finally. I'm a reviewer. Impartial. Switzerland. I love UX and I loved a lot of the music from Anjuna Records, but I don't know either of them so I'll focus on solely the music thank you very much. In 2012 we got a remastered and enhanced digital version of Ultimate Experience that really got the juices flowing. So fast forward to this release and now we get live versions and remixes of classic UX tracks and a mix of one by Slide and one by Cyberkrist. The artwork is beautiful (from Samuel Farrand from New Hampshire USA!) and the sound is impressive. Truly immersive and I pretty much love everything about this release from its dark acidic goa sound to its futuristic and aggressive atmosphere. The tracks are true storytellers constantly evolving with frequent twists and turns. It's layered madness with sinister sonic tsunamis that are just...unrelenting. The Waking Up To Chaos remix is a brutal assault with screaming leads (original by Pete Martin of Slide). Pure Intellect is just a wave of concussive force that hangs with the original. And that's a common element in all the remixes found here. While I wasn't fond of the Third Eye Remix on Tribal Encore the one here was raw and unapologetic with a dark techno base. This is how you do remixes expounding on music of which we are all certainly familiar. It's as if all the tracks have been given a shot of adrenalin becoming great companions to the originals. he brings the same industrial fury to Crossworld (a track I've never heard) with a deep guitar crunch and bubbly electronics. I'm not sure what Antic is listening to, but this sounds awesome in my car, on my headphones, and on my computer. I'm certainly not an audiophile (and don't doubt what he detects), but if he feels he cannot get joy (he might get joy, I don't know) from the sound quality of this release than all I can feel is pity. I agree that the volume level of Masters of the Universe sounds a bit lower (and if we're being honest it's not as brilliant as the original), but it's certainly not a deal breaker. Also, I would love some clarification on whether this mix is the same as the one found on the Ektoplazm release. The final excerpt raises hopes that perhaps a dark industrial tinged downtempo goa album (did I check enough boxes?) may be in the future. If you're a goa fan then this is an absolute must in your collection. The quality far outpaces all the drama that unfortunately went with it. Although to put a bit of a positive spin on it the drama certainly assured that it will skyrocket in value. Suntrip Shop
  12. Renato always made what I called melodic light goa. Hypnotizing with great sound quality. Like Ivan said he's produced for just about every goa label going so he's doing something right. This music is more of the same quality production that feels good like a well worn t-shirt. Not chaotic nor dark, but uplifting with quite a few details if you open your mind to hear them. His tracks do take on a similar sound so be aware of that. While not as over the top as AP I like the tracks fine enough. Keep up the good work Renato!

What the f*ck kind of threesome is this? Total kick in the nuts. After Alien Protein and then the epic DAT Records Live In Athens, how could this be anything else? Obviously they made music for the time (2001), but it's not even good tech-trance. If you didn't look at the cover you wouldn't even know it was the same guys. Throw me in the camp that would've loved these guys to do a Psychill album. Ah well... I think it's best if we just imagine this album never existed. Or better yet, blame it on Alien Jesus.
  14. Artist: Lucidstatic Vs. Human Error Title: Wasteland Radio EP Label: CRL Studios Date: November, 2011 1.Rad-io 2. Epi(centre) 3. vap0.r.1zed 4. (Loose)lips(sinks)ships 5. Fire Breathing b-east "The government has decided that in the present state of international tension you should be told how to best protect yourself from the dangerous effects of nuclear attack." Found this on the bandcamp page for Lucidstatic. It was free so I didn't have anything to lose. This is a short ep that has nuclear disaster as a theme. Love the dark edgy stuff and this is gritty and scary made more so by the eerie melodies and 1950's samples about protecting yourself in the event of a nuclear attack. The first track and Loose Lips are a pile of mechanical breakcore noise and not to my taste. Epi(center), vap0r.r.1zed, and the last track however are downtempo industrial tracks that hit me just right. Slow and dark. It's a very brief ep, but if atmosphere and hard electronics are your thing you should check this out. Lucidstatic Bandcamp
  15. Man the sound is super smooth. Very intricate with numerous little details.
  16. Artist: Lunar Dawn TItle: Triglav Label: Neogoa Records Date: April, 2016 1. Jav 2. Nav 3. Prav 4. Golden Arms Of Kresnik (Journey Into Sound Remix) 5. Svarog's Celestial Fire (Proxeeus Remix) 6. Golden Arms of Kresnik (Lectro Spektral Daze Remix) 7. Svarog's Celestial Fire (Dragon Twins Remix) "Darkness! No parents! Super rich! Kinda makes it better!" I did not realize that Triglav was also the name of a heavy metal band from the Ukraine. But I ain't about that. Gotta love Neogoa. A label whose only goal was to release quality goa trance for free has certainly blossomed into something quite irreplaceable. While they still stay true to the mantra of goa trance liberation they've also dipped their toe into limited album sales. To which I say thank God because the music they release is certainly worth having in physical form. Lunar Dawn recently released their debut album Kolovrat which was steeped in Slavic folklore and mythology. Triglav is a continuation of that with 4 extra tracks (remixes of two tracks from that debut album) for those that order the digipak. This duo is no stranger to an album full of remixes or have you forgotten the Blessings From Irij digital release? On top of that the artwork in the form of wallpapers are also included. The cover is quite intricate and invites the eye to search out new apects every time I look at it. Jav certainly sets the medieval atmosphere with a very folksy and Games of Thrones gravitas. You can just feel the mud of the land and the privileged royalty. Nav is where we get down to the business of goa trance. And also where we get a real world instrument contribution on the bouzouki from Amir John Haddad whcih adds to that ethnic vibe. I'll be honest I felt very European listening to that. Prav for me was the weakest track that felt too full-oney without any of the feelings of the others. But then we get to the remixes and it's a tough job to remix great tracks. One thing that is a must for a remix is that it cannot be a carbon copy of the original with just a few different sounds. And the two chosen for remixes were some of the best tracks on Kolovrat. Golden Arms of Kresnik and Svarog's Celestial Fire are such epic tracks that carry the medieval folk melodies as a shield on one arm and a battle axe of goa trance in the other hand. The remix by J.I.S. gives it some hyper motion with other melodies and a break that was quite appealing. The LSD remix of the same track however felt unremarkable and inferior to the original in pretty much every way. Too herky jerky for my tastes. Proxeeus had me with that 303 wobble and I never looked back while the Dragon Twins applied a little BOTB acidic flare to their effort. Both with great results. I appreciate the effort that went into this and for Lunar Dawn and Neogoa to offer this as a physical release well I think it's got its place in my collection. Happy to have it there. That said it's not the shiniest gem in the Neogoa crown with a couple of tracks that fall short of greatness. Sometimes I felt that it was seemed more important to incorporate the ethnic mythological feel in the tracks that the actual goa trance took a back seat. I didn't feel that way with Kolovrat. It was so deep and involved and struck a harmonious balance. That said the majority of the music found within is really good. Sound quality is beyond reproach from my ears and the art is a joy to behold. Free at Ektoplazm, but don't be a cheap f*ck...buy the digipak and get the 4 extra tracks.
  17. Artist: Various Title: The Mystery of Crystal Worlds Prologue Label: Global Sect Music Date: October, 2015 1. Psy-H Project - Krishna or Maya 2. Morphic Resonance - Outro (Extended Version) 3. Liquid Flow - Event Horizon 4. Celestial Intelligence - Hidden Valley 5. Artifact303 - Delirium (Downward Spiral) Gettin' all hot and bothered over here! Like all loyal goa heads I was transfixed when the latest compilation from Global Sect Music was first announced and promptly pre-ordered 2 copies. Like...zero waiting. The track list alone demanded that I do nothing less. Having already released the delicious Space of Power and debut album Dance of Distant Worlds from dark goa producer Psy-H Project it was a foregone conclusion that their 3-CD compilation was going to be a must have. The previews showcased super sounds with some fantastic artwork as they decided to go all out. Not only can you order the album (only goa trance released that was apparently based on a poem), but they're offering t-shirts, posters, backdrops...the whole 9. I was ready to throw my money at them (and I eventually did), but at the time of this writing we had to wait for it to be released. To tide you over they offer a digital five track taste of what's to come. A prologue if you will. And like the edges of my home made brownies it's f*cking awesome. The aforementioned Psy-H blows the doors off your Renault with a 15 minute bomb of spiritual napalm. Mystic goa trance at the highest state of enlightenment. Morphic Resonance (debut album just released as if you didn't know) combines goa trance with post apocalyptic atmosphere in a downtempo slog. Lush and powerful it's like Frontline Assembly and Downward Spiral NIN joined forces in an unstoppable Voltron of goa trance. Do you, ah even know what a Voltron is? The measured journey continues with Liquid Flow that just has me shaking my head. This is a prologue? Sinister and bubbly. Man this is good. Celestial Intelligence picks up the pace and delivers an entrancing, bouncing track while Artifact303 resurfaces to close out this gift with a storming breakbeat track. This was a free EP when you pre-ordered the Mystery of Crystal Worlds, but unfortunately that ship has sailed. Some might have a problem with forking over 10E for 5 tracks, but the first three tracks are so good that I felt it was worth it. I feel like I'm preaching to the choir here, but you guys probably already have this anyway. Highly recommended! Global Sect Bandcamp
  18. I had never heard this track before so that's always a bonus. It sounds...old though. I know it is old, but it sounds old and as though they hadn't found their sound. Perhaps technology back then wasn't there yet. 4/5? You must really love some Prana.
  19. Artist: Various Title: Cyberdelica Vol. 2 Label: Trancelucent Productions Date: May, 2007 1. Visual Paradox Vs. System Nipel - Cyberdelica 2. Sesto Sento - Matzo-Brei 3. Krunch - Food 4. Cosmic Tone Vs. Noga - White Sensation 5. Bizzare Contact - The Beach (System Nipel Remix) 6. Insomnia - Light of Shady 7. System Nipel - Flash Dance 8. D.N.A. - New Age (Injection Remix) 9. Tactic Mind Vs. Silent Hill - Mind Tones "I don't want to go outside, there are things that can kill you!" Holy monkey balls this is some cream puff full-on. This cd should come with a pair of hot pants and glow sticks. At the very least a huge cracker to handle all the cheese. This is super euphoric happy trancey confection with the depth and gravitas of a puddle. Isn't psytrance supposed to be...I dunno, psychedelic? Far from an elitist or a music snob, I do believe that if you're caught blasting this in your car it may be grounds for a beating. I think listening to this caused me some actual discomfort. Please I was full on face palming and asking, "Why the hell did I buy this?" The definition of sugar infused candy corn happy trance and why full-on has the reputation it does. Even though I liked The Beach remix, I think my computer gave me a virus out of spite. Beatspace
  20. Artist: Various Title: Avant Garden Label: TIP Records Date: October, 2015 1. Avalon & Electric Universe - One Giant Leap 2. Lucas & Laughing Buddha - Revel With The Devil 3. Lucas & Mechanimal - The Impossible (Imaginarium Remix) 4. Tristan & Groove Addict - Feel The Light 5. Circuit Breakers - Rumblicious 6. Martian Arts & Radical Frequencies - 808 Space 7. Psilocybian - Scatterbrain 8. Outside The Universe - Electric Memories 9. Earthling & Ajja - Puddle Jumpers 10. Hypnocoustics & Cosmosis - Dark Matter The way TIP is going is this going to be there next album cover? Sigh. I'm kind of torn on this one. I love (perhaps loved is more accurate) TIP Records even though they've begun to resemble Nano, but man you've got to give me more if you want this relationship to work. Trying to catch lightning in a bottle after the massive goodness that was Tales of Heads (the promo says this is a follow up to God Save the Machine) is proving a wee bit difficult. Lucas brings together a list of the usual suspects in a lineup that is heavy on unrealized potential. There are too many stripped down stretches where the bass line is very prominent and doesn't allow other parts to shine. Gone are the lush details and constantly morphing synth lines we saw on those other two albums. There is nothing that draws me in and therefore I don't feel invested in the tracks. This was the same problem with the Laughing Buddha, Dickster, and Tristan albums. Good parts are there yet they are outweighed by the longer and less imaginative ones. I don't want you to get the impression that this was a bad album because it's not. But when the bar you yourself set so high isn't reached me makey sad face. Plenty of tracks are more than good. 808 Space featuring half of Goasia and the final track pairing Hypnocoustics with Cosmosis were the best tracks for me just to name a couple. Overall the compilation is good and at times great, but certainly a tad disappointing considering what came before it. So I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's a good album, but fell short of what I was hoping for. Psyshop Beatspace
  21. Cold. Robotic. Harsh. Loud. Punishing. Acidic. Futuristic. Not bad for 2004. With some more melodies and depth this could've been a real crusher instead of being just pretty good.
  22. Yeah I'd even give this a lower score than you did Jon. I bought it for completion's sake, but all it makes me want to do is listen to Cosmology and Synergy. It's early 2000's psytrance that doesn't have the dynamism and presence that the other two albums did. It's not bad, just doesn't measure up.
  23. Artist: Shpongle & Mad Tribe Title: Stoned Remixes EP Label: TIP Records Date: May, 2016 1. Out Here We Are Stoned (Mad Tribe Remix) 2. Out Here We Are Stoned (Shpongle Remix) A remix of a remix? Can you do that? Won't that create a rift in the time space continuum? Oy TIP. Good to see you employing the "just throw some sh*t together" method of album art. This is a short 2-track EP that attempts to remix the X-dream remix of E-rection's Out Here We Are Stoned. It's a classic track and the fact that Shpongle did one of these will probably have all the Shpongle bunnies emerging from their hidey holes. Ok we know how this goes. Take a classic track and usually make an inferior full-on sounding remix. Mad Tribe (Space Tribe + Mad Maxx) did just that. What did you actually add that made the track better? You full-oned it surely, but didn't even throw any of that sticky acid both projects love to use in there. Yeah you kept the iconic signature melody, but... Fail. Now I was surprised with the uptempo Shpongle mix. It wasn't better or transformative, but from the middle of the track onward was pretty bouncy. The promo said this was from the deleted vaults (whatever that means), but perhaps the most intriguing statement: "Essential release and a taster of an exciting project we will be releasing news on very soon!!!" The first part of that statement is an outright lie, and the second part...well we'll have to see won't we? TIP we all want to see you back on top, but you're gonna have to do better than this. Kinda hard to compete with details and facts from the guy who was instrumental in putting the compilation together isn't it? Obviously this review thread needs gratuitous gifs of barely contained breasts and derrieres. Let's face it that's my wheelhouse. The third installment of the Mind Rewind series is certainly no longer a secret in our community. Though fantastic efforts by a lot of people we the goa loving the community receive lost or hard to find tracks all while knowing that all the proceeds go to help Indian children. Feels good knowing that from my normal position on the couch I can help this worthy cause. First world philanthropy baby. I haven't listened to the two previous installments of this series even though I purchased them long ago so I cannot comment on whether this is better or worse than those. On it's own it is a really good 2 disc compilation of stuff that was never released on only released on vinyl. I don't have a turntable so these compilations that send vinyl only stuff my way always appeal to me. While I agree that the Ra track and Time Slices rule the roost, there is a lot of great stuff to be found here. Pure old school stuff. The Little Blue Men track is a beast! 3 Months is a pounding constantly evolving track, Semsis gets industrial (weren't they anyway?) Hiscore gets mad screechy, and the 471st mix of Let's Turn On pulsates as a stripped down version. The only tracks I didn't like were Harmony and Anthropophagi. Too boring. Most surprising? Who knew the boys from the Noise had it in them? The rest are solid offerings. I imagine everyone who is into goa already has or will have this. The fact that it's for a good cause helps armchair philanthropists like myself get a good night's sleep. And it's only 15 Euro? Please, I've spent more on Vaseline. What? I like to be shiny. 25. Artist: Toi Doi Title: Synaptic Electrophoresis Label: Suntrip Records Date: January, 2016 1. Pixel Voyager 2. Elliptical 3. Spiral Dive Remix 4. Exostatic 5. Rossignol Perché 6. Exostatic 3rd Mix 7. Planet 4 8. Whale Way Express 9. Noise I've never cared for the music of Toi Doi. I bought Technologic long ago and really had trouble getting through it. This wasn't the type of goa trance that made me fall in love with the genre in the first place. I don't know if it's coincidence or not, but I couldn't find a review for that album here. Maybe y'all are just some lazy f*cks. Gilles Coia makes a different sort of goa trance that doesn't have a lot in common with projects like MFG, Astral, Etnica...His sound is more experimental and shies away from the intense layers and over the top melodies. I believe his sound takes some work to really absorb and process effectively. Then again, maybe I'm a lazy f*ck. The 2000's were pretty productive for him, yet it wasn't until the Mother Pitch EP in 2011 that I began to give his music another chance. So here comes Suntrip and DAT Records with their latest offering of music from the cagey veteran. These are tracks from the late 90's and early 2000's that promise a darker and more acidic sound. And right out of the gate he delivers. Pixel Voyager is a long, entrancing bit of nastiness that immediately becomes my favorite track from Toi Doi. It gives and takes while it grows. Granted the bar was low for me, but he certainly now has my attention. And then by the third track he lost it. Psychedelic? Yeah I suppose, but the Spiral Remix was also light on melody and manages to plod forward without many dynamics. Exostatic exhibits a violent electricity that I really liked. As the track went along it picked up intensity and I found myself in a deep nebula of bliss. Unfortunately this album is a bit of an up and down ride. Case in point, after the mildly eyebrow raising Rossignol Perche' track he lays the 303 hammer down with the Exostatic 3rd mix. Pure goa! Just when I think he's going to string a few bangers together, he kinda switches on the auto-pilot. Nothing bad mind you, but nothing that requires the back button. "Everyone who likes their goa-trance different..." That's the tagline from Suntrip's shop and it's accurate. Nobody is going to confuse this with Afgin or Artifact303. Different is a good way to describe it and it surely is a deviation from their normal stuff. As I mentioned it's a bit of an up and down ride with some really good tracks and some that could arguably be labelled filler. Certainly not the pinnacle of their catalog. However, the fa ct that they are taking chances and presenting something different is something that should be applauded. They have been accused of producing the same generic sound in the past and clearly they've listened to what their fans want. The sound quality is excellent and if you're a fan of his music than I can't think of any reason not to purchase it. I did. Suntrip Psyshop Beatspace
