  1. Usually the cosmic leaf album cover frame is a good sign of low quality cheesy chillout. This release from EE isn't of low quality, but it tries to be highly emotional and certaninly is cheesy chillout. I don't think cheesy chillout is something necessarily bad, and it certainly isn't as bad as cheesy faster music. Compared to EE's previous full length (which I like quite a bit), this album has more ambient elements, which are mostly plain boring (same goes for the ambient parts in "Idyllic Life"). Also, most tracks aren't as emotional, which is bad since the music clearly tries to be that. Overall, I would recommend that you first get "Idyllic Life", then the EPs and finally, if you still want more EE, get this album.
  2. I think the slow track is nice, can still feel the Loud vibe.
  3. Have been quite successful with other friends actually, converting a indie popper to a regular psyhead being my greatest pride You have to be very careful with the track choice though, starting with highly accessible stuff (Secede - Leraine is a good first track) and then going upwards on the ladder of psychedelicness. Anyway, some interesting suggestions here, will try a couple of them out.
  4. So I occasionally send music to this friend of mine. He is into dark metal, folk metal and generally grim stuff like that. My success rate with him has been pretty terrible, and the only music that he has liked from me is Phutureprimitive - Sub Conscious (Whole album) Celtic Cross - Swazz, Mundis Imaginalus from countless of great tracks. So I ask here for recommendations for tracks similar to those above, which I think can be characterized as some kind of darker chillout with a clear emotional/melodic touch. Thanks
  5. Highly anticipated, I can feel the vibe of the "Endless Universe" in the samples.
  6. I was very sad to find that Torakka unfortunately passed away in September of last year, what an immense shame.
  7. Doesn't get much more psybreaky than Psyknights - A Faint Light From the Dark (album) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlN_5MVrTHc
  8. These would be my top picks for the year: Bodhisattva 13:20 - Equations (Dark) Hedonix - Order Out of Chaos (Dark/Prog) Kraft - Mysteries of the Sacred Universe (Dark) Terrafractyl - Chrysalis (Full) Tron - Biologic (Full) Yagya - Rigning (Dubtech)
  9. An immortal classic, rich, beautiful and alive unlike any other. There is such impressive interplay between melodies that constantly fade in and out of existence, yet each track maintains coherence of a general idea, making every track unique and distinct. Anyone who as dabbled in music making understands what impressive feat it is to connect melodies in such a manner. The premiere track here for me is "Life Is...", which perfects the formula of the album.
  10. You can also listen to Puff Dragon's (Steve Good) brilliance in quite a different form, as Double Dragon with the unbelievably dense and beautiful album "Continuum". A far cry however from this mellow and easily accessible (although great) piece of chillout.
  11. Well, once I was listening to an illegally downloaded mp3 copy of Filteria's "Operation Pulse" and I was thinking, damn this stuff really makes me feel like I'm flying. So I guess I would add that track to your list. On a complete side note; what a brutally cold winter it has been. I heard the sun is shining over Moscow though, long live communism.
  12. Can't believe I read your whole post. Anyway, once I was writing on my master thesis "Subtraction Towards Absolute Nothing", the subject-matter being philosophy on the nature of there being nothing at all, while listening to an illegally downloaded copy of The Infinity Project - Mystical Experiences which just so happen to contain the sample "Hard to imagine nothing. Nothing, nothing. No me, no you, no world. Nothing." A curious coincidence, I thought at the time.
  13. This is highly melodic chillout in the vein of Easily Embarrassed. We find big beats and very prominent melodies, in fact one could argue that there isn't much more to the tracks than these two elements, there's little talk about atmospheres and textures which are so common in low tempo stuff. Not necessarily something bad, it might simply be an (easily) acquired taste, but that might be said of all music, so it's not a very interesting argument. I'll just say that throwing melodies at peoples faces generally is a bad thing and that Koan is excellent when he does not do that so much, such as in #5 Dance of Nereids and in most non-climactic parts of the whole album. As a final judgement I would say; check it out before buying, but be sure to check it out because it might fit your taste just right.
  14. Not as inspired as his previous release "Dreamforce" but a nice listen nevertheless. A more homogeneous sound can be found here, not so much deviating from the standard set in the midtempo tracks of "Dreamforce", but often with a more distinct melodic touch. One bad track (Silver Falls, which has unbearable vocals), but the rest are good or very good (Totoro Temple stands out to me).
  15. Well I've finally gathered an opinion about this album; I like everything about it, the name, the cover and music is outstanding, strong contender for album of the year. Particularly great tracks are hard to pick out, but the madness late in Dark Star tickles my brain very nicely. Rotwang analyzed this album well when he said that the "idea/track ratio is remarkably large", I find that Dark typically has high such ratio, but Mysteries stands out even in this context.
  16. Haltya - 1979 Flashdance At first you might think well yeah this makes some kind of sense. Flashdance, a movie that was made '79, but Flashdance wasn't made in '79, thats what makes this a great title.
  17. Up-tempo: Double Dragon - Continuum Down-tempo: The Orb - Orbus Terrarum
  18. I don't think eudaimonia was referring to any Matrix idea about reality, he was simply stating the common (and I would say plausible) Kantian idea that our perception of reality is limited by the categories of our brain (such as time and space.)
  19. I don't think you will find a perfect match, but here are some that you might find interesting: Psyknights - A Faint Light from the Dark Electrypnose - Funked Up Artifakt - The Magus
  20. Maybe Michelle Abrahamson or whatever the hell her name is.
  21. Nothing short of a terrific album, with a unique sound and excellent production quality. #3 is the only weak track here (I find it quite unbearable), the rest ranges from good to near-classics. #9 Blunt Instruments being of the latter kind, a beautiful and fairly complex composition that I have even dared to share with friends not familiar with this type of music.
