  1. Artist: Akshan Title: Versions Inedites Ep Label: Altar Records Date: May, 2013 1. The Rise Of Atlantis (Extended Live Mix) 2. Adagio For The Braves (Extended Live Mix) 3. Journey To Persia (Extended Mix) 4. Gates Of Heaven (Extended Live Mix) 5. Shadows And Lights (Extended Mix) Vincent Grenier is a French artist who has crafted some of the most gorgeous downtempo and progressive trance I've ever heard. His style is symphonic and wide open like the skies of Montana. No space is left untouched as his music reaches deep and lush soundscapes. These five tracks for an Ep (almost an hour of music) are versions that were unreleased from his two albums. One track Journey to Persia I've never heard before. The music is mellow, lengthy, melancholy and dream inducing characterized by long intros and outros. It's truly storytelling at its finest. It's been a while since his last album and I sure hope he will have more music soon. Altar Records Bandcamp (24 bits)
  2. Artist: Talamasca Title: A Brief History of Goa Trance Label: Dacru Records Date: June, 2017 1. A Brief History of Goa Trance Astral Projection 2. A Brief History of Goa Trance Electric Universe 3. A Brief History of Goa Trance Etnica 4. A Brief History of Goa Trance Hallucinogen 5. A Brief History of Goa Trance Juno Reactor 6. A Brief History of Goa Trance Man With No Name 7. A Brief History of Goa Trance Oforia 8. A Brief History of Goa Trance Transwave 9. A Brief History of Goa Trance X-Dream "I live for this moment here." I mean... *sigh* What in the actual f*ck is he doing? I'm trying not to sound like a snobby purist, but how is this anything but sh*tting all over the artists he is said to admire? Calling this a brief history is like comparing the entire works of Mozart to the latest Katy Perry album. Talamasca is Cédric Dassulle and he left any and all of his goa credibility behind him long ago, let's just put that right out front. At this point he's like my bloated orange president with the lies. Remember his album Psychedelic Trance? Me neither cause it was far from it. I can best describe this effort as him taking parts of tracks from the artist he said had influence on him and "full-oning" it until any sense of soul and spirituality has been wrung out of it. Loaded with cliches including cringe inducing triplets and a cornballing of original melodies. It sounds exactly how you think it would. I mean...how in the f*ck do you make the melody from Etnica's Trip Tonite sound like it's full-on cheese regurgitation? How do you do that? Simon Posford is rolling over in his grave for the callous way you neutered LSD. Just because you insert the samples from the originals doesn't mean a connection is forged. This is what Hollywood does to once proud franchises so congratulations. This doesn't make me want to hear this album again. It makes me want to hear the originals to see how it was correctly done. You wanna honor those artists? Either re-learn how to make goa trance or just stay the hell away from their music. Psyshop
  3. Artist: Jikooha Title: Spacemen Underground Label: Matsuri Digital Date: June, 2017 1. Neo Tokyo Apocalypse 2. Decode Reality 3. Gravity Controller 4. Shamanarchy 5. Shambhala UFO 6. Lemuria 7. Nextgen Odyssey [Jikooha & Asteroidnos] 8. Ecco Weed 9. Mandalavision I hope to go to Japan one day and experience the melding of an ancient culture and a modern metropolis. So many things to see and do. From way over here in the states it seems so foreign and that they aren't afraid to be different. That principle also applies to their goa trance as it doesn't sound like anything currently out there. This duo has been around a long time and they seem to push the boundaries of goa into sometimes loud and abrasive places. Perhaps it's the punk vibe flowing through their veins. It's been five years since their last album Sirius Rising and what do you know this is their fifth album. They open things with an onslaught of analog sounds, thumping beats, and a progressive feel. Neo Tokyo Apocalypse is mostly a positive track, but that vibe doesn't last very long. Decode Reality brings an ominous analog wave pierced with 303 tones as if in warning. It churns and throbs while Gravity Controller oscillates with no less insistence. Not as dark, but still driving. Shamanarchy is tribal and mysterious with intense melodies. Shambala UFO brings guitar into the mix, but merely as a handrail for the electronics yet it's my least favorite track on the album. Lemuria is an addictive track with electric analog sounds pulsing in layers. Nextgen Odyssey has a more groovy and less aggressive feel with ample opportunity for head nodding. Ecco Weed is a more mellow offering that seems to say the album is winding down from its intensity and I believe should've been the final track. But they close with Mandalavision, and the intensity makes a final appearance raising the blood pressure like a new Trump executive order. Their sound is dancing in an underground club until the wee hours of the morning amidst flashing lights and multitudes of colors. Taking a simple melody and twisting it until it becomes hypnotically lush. Before you know it you've sweated through your clothes. As I've mentioned the beat is always heavy and there is an analog presence throughout while adding tribal elements in some tracks. While none of the tracks for me rise to the Etnica/Pleiadians level of detail this was a solid goa trance album and definitely worth the wait. Psyshop
  4. Not bad. Far from a classic, but certainly enjoyable.
  5. It's compilations like this that allow DJ's all over the world to just push play and almost turn some knobs to fake the appearance of actually doing something. It's that good. One of the greatest mixed CDs that's out there IMO.
  6. Artist: Xerox & Illumination Title: Temporary Insanity Label: HOM-Mega Productions Date: May, 2004 1. 3D 2. Marley On Acid (Part II) 3. Resolution (feat. Sandman) 4. Tribal Metal 5. Helium 6. Illumination - Under Pressure 7. Break Off 8. Psycraft - S.O.S. (Xerox & Illumination Remix) 9. Alech'o (feat. Goma) Yes, get it son! These two artists had really good solo careers before they decided to team up and hands down the best album of the three this duo has done in my opinion. They came close several times after their debut with some decent tracks, but this is full-on with that early 2000's edge that still holds my attention. It's hard charging and varied with tracks sounding like Braincell in his hey day. There is a futuristic component and a dark, acidic vibe that still holds up.
  7. Mr. Tello eases you into things with Paranoid Life which is interesting, but then proceeds to lull you to sleep with boring and unimaginative full-on. It's not until Cosmos that things begin to get more aggressive and interesting. Even though it becomes more acidic with the later tracks I'm afraid it doesn't really hold up. Decent, but there is much better night time psytrance than this.
  8. Artist: Morphic Resonance Title: Trip To The Stars Label: DAT Records Date: May, 2017 1. Pleiadians - Alcyone (Morphic Resonance Mix) 2. Pleiadians - Maia (Morphic Resonance Mix) 3. Pleiadians - Taygeta (Morphic Resonance Mix) 4. Pleiadians - Moon In Your Window (Morphic Resonance Mix II) 5. Crop Circles - Full Mental Jackpot (Morphic Resonance Mix) 6. Crop Circles - Different Species (Morphic Resonance Mix) 7. Etnica - Phetalic Vibes (Morphic Resonance Mix) 8. Pleiadians - Taygeta (Morphic Resonance Mix II) 9. Pleiadians - Moon In Your Window (Morphic Resonance Mix) Undisputed king of goa trance Cristian Fernandez has attempted to produce an album in the face of overwhelming odds. The odds of seeing the bloated orange president's taxes seem like a sure thing when compared to remixing arguably some of the greatest goa trance tracks of all time. Music from the Italian's projects (Pleiadians, Crop Circles, Etnica) is sacred and I suppose if we had commandments in the goa scene most of their music would be on it. The tracks are special and some would argue that you should just leave perfection alone. What he has presented here are remixes, his interpretation of tracks that meant so much to him. It took him over three years to do this and he did it without any files to provide a roadmap. As a musician I'll tell you it is incredibly difficult to copy an original piece of work with such detail. But he did what a remix is supposed to do and that is to create something fresh while keeping the spirit of the original work. The sound quality is stunning, just stunning. The tracks are f*cking blistering, evolving, relentless masterpieces. At no time did I think his work was subpar or that he failed to capture the glory of what was done in the past with perhaps one exception. Maia. That track in its original form is just a beast and at least to my ears what goa perfection sounds like. That said his version didn't make me want to stop listening. Far from it. I just took it as something different and a great goa track to be added to my library. This entire album is superb, melodic goa trance and I'll go even one further. His 2nd remix of Taygeta and his last remix of Moon In Your Window is better than the originals. This quote by gfp1 in the Artist News and Label Announcements thread is something I agree with: "All in all, the challenge undertaken to create Trip to the Stars was massive and I have to respect that. It is a difficult proposition to win. Simply recreating the originals would just make people want to go and listen to the originals, while altering the core of the tracks too much might turn off people who enjoyed the originals. Morphic Resonance found a healthy balance between the two." Bottom line for me is that DAT Records has once again delivered a powerhouse and if you are a goa fan this is a must have. I linked to Psyshop and Beatspace, but you should purchase it from DAT if you can as the two downloadable add on tracks are brilliant. Great Job Cristian! DAT Records Bandcamp Psyshop Beatspace
  9. Artist: K.O.B. Title: Identity Mash Label: Suntrip Records Date: May, 2017 1. Check In 2. Folie a Deux 3. Klecks 4. Grandiose Thoughts (Original Version) 5. Inculcating Ideas (Filteria Mix) 6. Identity Mash 7. Cousin It (2017 Mix) 8. Check Out feat. BOTB "I'm two people in one!" It's important to know who you are. It's the very foundation on which you build your character and what you go on to accomplish in life. K.O.B. is Jannis Tzikas and the alternate personality if you will of his more widely known project Filteria. While the latter is defined by melodies and is pure goa music through and through the former is a mash of styles relying heavily on the psychedelic aspect. This album is more concerned with driving rhythms and allowing the music to evolve. Sometimes building, sometimes deconstructing. It's robotic (not meant in a negative way), futuristic, and oftentimes the sound choices can sound metallic and harsh. But there is no mistaking who is behind this project as his goa soul shines through quite clearly. And sometimes angrily (which I like). The title and artwork accurately describe what is located within, a combination of forest and goa all tucked neatly under an umbrella of psychedelic psytrance. While not my favorite release from the vaunted Suntrip Records it continues to prove that they are not all sunshine and rainbows and haven't forgotten that psytrance indeed needs to remain psychedelic. 10. This is still some straight up hot fire. I'm digesting his most current release, but once you start these tracks they demand a full run through. Blistering stuff!
  11. By all that's holy this is definitely one of the greatest psytrance records of all time. Preach Nexus Media! I demand this be given classic status immediately!
  12. This has really held up well. It's a little somethin' to break the monotony Of all that hardcore dance that has gotten to be A little bit out of control. I heard he no longer produces music. Shame.
  13. Artist: Various Title: Psionic Riot Label: Digital Psionics Date: 2009 1. Electrypnose - Find the Button and Press It 2. Rubix Qube - Event Horizon 3. Xatrik & Slug - Check Positive 4. Hux Flux - Bring Your Own Bios (Kluster Remix) 5. Biorhythm - Grab & Rip 6. Xatrik - Wouter 7. Panayota - Space Station 8. Vanghoul & Sonic - Insulin 9. Dark Nebula - Zone Stalker 10. Multistate - Crunchy So close. This was almost a really good compilation. Aussie label Digital Psionics flagship series has been churning since 1999 with mostly above average results. Compiled and mastered by Xatrik this had all the pieces to be something special yet failed to deliver the goods. Find the Button and Press It was a great opener from the wizard of weird Electrypnose and Event Horizon is eerie and constantly changing, but the rest of the tracks didn't achieve their full potential. Each track seemed to take their foot off the accelerator and never reached that level of thumping madness. The Panayota track had several abysmal buildups (so painful) and also tried to cram every Family Guy sample into it's otherwise decent track. Sigh, I believe they left some ideas on the table. Good, but not great. Psyshop
  14. Artist: Maiia Title: Shining Dragon Label: Mystic Sound Records Date: March, 2017 1. Tale About the Shining Dragon 2. Princess From the North 3. Natural Energy (Album Mix) 4. Maiia303 - Electric Particles (Maiia GoaChill Remix) 5. Microcosmos (Instrumental Mix) 6. Fusion Age (Album Mix) 7. Eastern Saloon 8. Strawberry Lassy (Album Mix) 9. The Great Bear (Album Mix) 10. Kurbeats - Phony Phony (Maiia Remix) Yes, very interesting. This is Alla Vagner who should be familiar to all who frequent this forum based on her 2014 release Sky In Diamonds on Ovnimoon Records. It was a pleasant surprise and a breath of fresh air to hear the organic sound melded with goa trance. Sure it 's been done before, but man did she do it well. She gets right after it with the goa tinged breakbeat track Tale About the Shining Dragon and Natural Energy. I believe that she is the female equivalent to Hardfloor. Funky breakbeats layered with that saucy 303 riding shotgun. It's truly body moving music with eerie tones layered over top. Mysterious at times, but always engaging with plenty of tribal affects. Check out Strawberry Lassy...lots of Shponglese going on there. She keeps the tracks relatively short for maximum freshness. While not as eye opening as Diamonds, it nonetheless doesn't fail to impress. Mystic Sound Records Bandcamp
  15. Artist: Psychedelic Quest Title: Morning Trip Ep Label: Timewarp Records Date: March, 2017 1. Morning Trip 2. Crystal Moon 3. Lunar Circles 4. Crazy Forest Dude....where are the f*cking cookies? That's how this short digital ep from longtime producer Leonidas Giotis makes me feel. The sound is great, but it is what I term new school stagnant. It finds one groove and rides it all the way home. It's got a very happy and uplifting sound, but man it just doesn't go anywhere. All the tracks have similar arpeggios and feel a hell of a lot longer than they are. Sorry, but I cannot recommend this one. Far too weak on depth and details. Timewarp Bandcamp
  16. Artist: Various Title: Highoctane - Frenzy Inducing Psychedelic Electronica Label: Procyon Records Date: October, 2003 1. CPU - Laptop Orgy 2. Monastic Squid Vs. Shift - Suit Up (Remix) 3. Illusion of Self - Spectrum 4. E.S.X.S. - Electryk Mama 5. Nomad - X-style 6. Psysex - Fast and Furious 7. Wizzy Noise - Acid Echo 8. Dynamic Vs. Z-machine - Side Effect 9. Silicon Sound - The Shell The title of the compilation would have you visualize something like this: When in actuality this would probably be more appropriate: It starts off well with a track by CPU before he succumbed to whatever palsy that overtook his ability. If you're able to make it through the beginning of Elektryk Mama without wanting to punch yourself than you're a better man than I. Ugh, that sample. By the time we get to Psysex we are on a full-on waterslide without any water. Painful. To sum this up it's a compilation that starts off with that described frenzy only to quickly morph into a cat falling into a deep sleep as it attempts to cross a sunbeam.
  17. Any chance of collecting the original files from the artists and getting a redo on the master? It's such a shame because musically this is pretty awesome.
  18. Artist: Narcose Title: Panda Eyes Label: Mystic Sound Records Date: January, 2017 1. Gathering Clouds 2. Gonzos Last Ride 3. Smoke Signals 4. Panda Eyes 5. Inuit 6. The Shores of Idaho 7. Nighthawk 8. Floating Through Space Anyone who doesn't like pandas ranks right up there with being a member of Isis. They're so cute and adorable! Mystic Sound records has carved out a solid reputation for releasing some great downtempo music that you can find all over Ektoplazm including this release. This is Graham Roberts from the UK with a very smooth and relaxing downtempo foray. Funk is applied lightly in a track like Gonzos Last Ride which was quite enjoyable even if I felt it went on a tad too long. The percussion is realistic sounding as if he recorded it live. Listen to the epic title track and it sounds like the drummer is in the room! The slow beat and bass music combine to create a level of eerieness, but again...sounded like a 5 minute song stretched to 10. The breaks allow a new direction and sound quite interesting. While not groundbreaking it certainly is mellow and relaxing. Recommended. Free at Ektoplazm
  19. Artist: Bogtrotter Title: Immersion Label: Self-Released Date: October, 2016 1. Immersion 2. Circustep 3. Fields of Air 4. Digital Rust - Time Out Of Mind (Bogtrotter Remix) 5. Voyage VIP 6. Song of Sloth 7. ZicksFour Yeah, get in there! You can just feel the swampy atmosphere with this one. Gonna take a month to get all that filth off. You can hear the liquid bubbling and sucking sound as your shoe gets stuck in knee deep mud. Glitchy and slow moving the electronics drip and gurgle. I appreciate the electronic layering and the bass heavy goopiness, but still believe it's a novelty. There's not really a lot you can do with this type of music which would explain the short track times. Just my opinion. Really like the cover though. Free at Ektoplazm
  20. Artist: Various Title: 10 Years As Free Spirit Label: Free-Spirit Records Date: March, 2017 1. Cylon & The Wayfarers - Castles Made of Love 2. Invader - Twelve Sessions 3. Ital - Ganesh 4. Hypnocoustics & Alta - Diesel Story 5. Tron & Journey - Funktion Juan 6. Braincell - Network 7. Earthling & DSP - Kiss the Sky 8. Savage Circuit - Which Way Is Anjuna? 9. O.C.D. - Sense of Knowing "Have you felt it?" Yes, it feels like I just took two Tylenol PM with a side of propafol. So bored. Who took the psychedelic out of psytrance? Full-on beats with few exciting or even nap rousing moments. Twelve Sessions was eleven too long and I think if Ganesh was listening to Ital's track he would tell him he left the f*cking sequencer running. This generic, same sounding, patch sharing music is like punching a steak. There is no feeling. As you would imagine the best track here is by Braincell with his juicy, liquid sound, but expecting one man to save this narcoleptic compilation is like expecting Trump to save democracy. This should come with a warning label not to operate heavy machinery while listening. Beatport
  21. "There are some extremely odd things about this mission." Love this Ep. Sounds powerful and lush with melodies coming hand over fist.
  22. Artist: Omnivox Title: Innerpolarity 10 Years Remix Ep Label: Self Released Date: February, 2017 1. Mayana (2017 Remix) 2. City of Black Lights (2017 Remix) 3. Over the Clouds (2017 Remix) Long ago, in a galaxy far away there was a project called Vox and he released and album called Innerpolarity. Goa wasn't as available back then, so this was a welcome treat to hear new talent. Since then he changed his name to Omnivox and released the blistering Fragments of Evolution which you should already have in your collection. Here is a blurb describing the ep: "Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Saturday to Sunday." Ummm...that's not what it says. You just quoted a line from the Black Eyed Peas. Did I? So I did. Sorry, here it is. "I'mma make you my b*tch / Cake, cake, cake, cake / Cake, cake, cake, cake / Cake, cake, cake, cake / Cake, cake, cake." Nope. That's Rihanna. Wonder how many ghost writers were hired for that? Try again. Damn, thought for sure that was it. Ok got it... "My hump, my hump, my hump (ha), my lovely lady lumps (Check it out)." BEP's again. Dude you're stupid. The ep consists of 3 tracks the artist believes are the best from the album which stand the test of time. I really liked that album so I was curious to see 1) which tracks he chose and 2) what he could do with them. He's right those three tracks were really good to begin with, and the remixes are actual remixes. So refreshing. Some new leads, some more layers, all whilst keeping the outer space goa vibe the same. As you would expect the tracks sound fuller maybe due to improved technology. Bottom line, even though they aren't particularly memorable I enjoyed listening to them. Omnivox Bandcamp - Name your price, but don't be a cheap bastard.
  23. Almost 10 years old and just as smooth as when it was released. This is an album with true staying power.
  24. Artist: Shivax Title: Victory Anthems Label: Sita Records Date: September, 2014 1. Initiation 2. Unknown Source 3. Ganesha-Shanti (Feat. Agneton) 4. Victory Anthems 5. Acid Horns 6. Filterizations 7. A King's Tribute 8. Agneton - Het Was Zomer (Shivax Remix) 9. The Iron Throne Nitzhonot. This is how I feel when I hear it. Now I love riding coasters so you would think that would be a good thing, but sometimes I find it so exhausting. Oftentimes I feel it can sound like kiddie music and I don't mean to insult the artists who produce it. Music is very personal and nitzhonot is an acquired taste. Sometimes it gets a little too crazy and key changey as it rampages up and down the scales. Kinda like when the chipmunks do a cover song. But that's just me and my not so humble opinion. And that's where I was with his first album. His second album has shown a little more mastery in blending goa trance with his nitzho and thereby not making it so tiring. When he gets in a good goa groove he lets it sit there a bit, allowing the listener to fully absorb it before whisking them off on a nitzho tangent. When he goes full goa trance on tracks like Acid Horn he shines, proving himself more than capable. For those that like his niztho style he still cranks up the speed and gets to ludicrous speed on tracks like Filterizations and Victory Anthems. Remixing a pop song is generally a bad idea as they usually turn out to be terrible, but track 9 is his take on the Game of Thrones theme. It was meh. So I would say from a goa lover's perspective this is an improvement over his first album, but not enough to find broad appeal. If you don't like nitzo, give this one a pass.
