Darkarbiter
So I know this is the other electronic section, but if it has synths its electronic enough right? So anyway, I got into black metal recently, which is very atmospheric stuff, and a lot of the artists are quite melodic (without being cheesy like melodic death metal) and (long tracks too) ambient influenced. Also there's some great doom out there, and even some funeral doom that's half ambient really. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=miDIlGrQPaU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tiYznJldNbk and a pure ambient/modern classical track from the former "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npJwCqShjbQ There's some great folk metal and such as well http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sTIzYTe70w Hmm was about to edit the title into metal and neofolk/moddern classical since they don't really fit into ambient but no, can't change topic titles on this forum. Anakoluth
Shape of Despair is absolutely beautiful indeed. Great music. As for Burzum: This guy (Varg Vikernes or something) is an asshole. Fucking Nazi. These tendencies need to be eradicated. Better listen to some Kampfar for proper Black Metal, made by sane people:

These tendencies need to be eradicated. Better listen to some Kampfar for proper Black Metal, made by sane people: the albums he released from his cell in prison were much better than the ones he released before imprisonment! I lost contact with black metal few years ago, but from those days i recommend: Summoning (if i remember correctly this album is pretty good). also Nocte Obducta ( was my favorite song of theirs. it continues in part 2 video). Fucking Nazi. These tendencies need to be eradicated. Better listen to some Kampfar for proper Black Metal, made by sane people: Kampfar is quite good thanks but varg isn't a nazi, he mentions he's strongly patriotic and he used to describe himself as a nazi, but that the term has a quite different meaning there and he isn't at all rascist/anti slavic/anti jewish like the problems associated with nazism. What'd you think of agalloch though? I think I'm definitely going to have to look at the whole funeral doom/ambient crossover doom stuff a lot more. also Nocte Obducta ( was my favorite song of theirs. it continues in part 2 video).Very nice atmosphere on that one! okay yes, a bit ambient, but it's i dont know, childsish? all this style is imo pretty much for little frustrated not really talented musician, if you know a bit guitar and some good orginal melodious guitar playing, you would laugh at those childish solos, i dont know, but im not a teenager anymore i guess, without jugement, but lets listen to chris whitley rather then does immature devil guys, there just ugly haha, and thats why they are frustratedCome discuss doom metal then! All I know is, it's very atmospheric, and it generally doesn't feel immature, in some cases quite deep, and there's stuff that's definitely better than others, and its quite open ended. It's certainly a lot better than hardstyle or grindcore anyway.
p(sy)ayam
in case of doom metal you may want to check out: Katatonia, My Dying Bride, Type O Negative, Tiamat, Agathadaimon, Mortiis, etc. again these are from 6-7 years ago :drama:
Darkarbiter
Aren't agathadaimon symphonic black metal? Allready know them, they are quite good. My dying bride is awesome.
Indred Cold
I don't know too many bands as I kinda just got into it a few months ago but....For sludge/doom: Katatonia, Acid Bath(well these guys r liked 5 or 6 types of metal vary original. too bad they only had 2 albums), Neurosis, Cult Of Luna, Mindrot, Eyes Of Fire, Sunn O))) <---these guys r drone doom, 2 guitars, no drums & half the tracks have no vocals. RTP
whoa, guys, respect ... I've never expected to have some of my favourite metal artists mentioned here! i recommend: Summoning (if i remember correctly this album is pretty good)Summoning, yes, that's a totally great band. My favourite when it comes to epic black metal. Absolutely love them, since they're fellas from Austria aswell Dol Guldur is good, but I found Stronghold much better. Also Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame. Can't speak for the last one though, I'm keeping it for a special moment ... but this song should clear out all doubts, very good one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUhEsuwp6g8 (singing in orc language ). Minas Morgul isn't that special IMO (except for the song Lugburz). They've moved away from their black metal arrangements ... now it's trumpets, choir, marching drums and tuned down guitars. Actually brillant. MortiisYou know Mortiis? POWNAGE! Congratulations, you're the first person I ever met who uttered this name not on the official band forum. What's your favourite album? Do you know all eras? The past? Sideprojects? Tell me, I wanna know! Sunn O)))yes, Sunn O))) is awesome ... very interesting sound, practically dark ambient made with guitars ... interesting good, good... I might add: HOLLENTHON. Absolutely awesome music in the veins of a bit Summoning, but less solitude in the sound and more might and power. Hollenthon's awesome. check this out for his old stuff: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9iYSwkICvQ check this out for his new stuff: (rough, but gets brillant in the later part) and apart from all the good and epic stuff I just gotta mention the finnish humppa metal crazyness I so love ... namely: FINNTROLL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGywo81G6lk&feature=fvst KORPIKLAANI: TROLLFEST: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Puj0u8p5og p0wnage forever! \m/
mono
Meshuggah is not doom, though they do kick tremendish ass. Very good band. Their last album kicks so much ass, it's unbelievable. Seen them play live several times, severe eardrum destructution. As for stoner/doom/sludge: Ufomammut, Morkobot, Electric wizard, Amenra, Down, are great Highly recommended albums: Between the buried and me - Colours (Prog/Death metal) Gojira - From mars to sirius & The way of all flesh Porcupine Tree - In Absentia, Deadwing & Fear of a blank planet (very good psychedelic prog rock/metal)
Drosophila
I see fear factory mentioned... have to add the title track on Demanufacture http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyufeh5dD9s it has some electronic effects as well ahh I totally forgot about this one this is actuallly quite nice... getting some flash-backs! actually it was FF and White Zombie that re-sparked my interest in electronica after a heavy melt-down in the early-mid nineties

Mortiis was one of my favs. i liked the atmospheres they create, but like any other black metal band they are too much into making themselves like clowns. I like their side project Vond. it's been a looooooooong time since i listened to metal though so everything is blurred. i liked their dark ambient albums but i guess those can;t be considered metal! i also like their softer album The Smell Of Rain. even liked the synth pop vocals on Everyone Leaves. but i prefer Summoning. and yeah Lugburz is really good back then Nocte Obducta was one of those bands that changed my taste from death metal to atmospheric black metal. the video i posted earlier in this thread is their best track IMO. if you take the harsh vocals out i would still love that song. in general, vocals in black metal bands is something i'm not fond of. it's too, emmm, childish! Nefarious
Katatonia, fuck yeah. Dance of December souls is brilliant. Early My Dying Bride releases I still love. been a while since I was into metal as a lot of people here! Still love those groups and times spent with that music. Grind especially. Heard Anathema? Again i only familiar with early stuff. Like My Dying Bride kinda. Never really into black metal. The scene totally fucking exploded in early nineties and everyone seemed to think they could speed pick a few notes over a constant beat, pretend they were the coldest, most dark forest, my corpse paint and studded leather has longer nails embedded than yours, and you got an evil band!! hilarious. Of course the bands that were true black metal were so good they inspired these hordes! Still not my thing tho. Don't make the mistake of sayin "still better than hardstyle (whatever the fuck that is) or Grindcore. tsk tsk. Like saying prog better than GOA. Its all metal, same as its all psy/trance. People have preferences, but no style is superior. Do I like thrash, not really, but its still metal. Grindcore is fucking great. Same variation as any style, some shit bands, some good ones and some great ones also. Wont write a pretencious list, but if you can find stuff, check Disembowelment from Australia. Actually manged to pull off a kind of doom grind. As weird as that sounds. Prolly more doom though. Slow and heavy as fuck with moments of faster sections. Great vokills also. Only limited releases, think demo ep and album. All combined on recent re issue. Prev released On Relapse records. Nice to hear lots others appreciate varied styles. One of the things that makes this site one of the best around.

Yes, I was a huge fan of Mortiis back then aswell. Got into it as he released The Smell of Rain and there was an article in a local music magazine and I saw his appearance and got interested. From the image I thought that it was the most brutal music ever, but then I realized it actually was really damn good! The Smell of Rain is his best album IMO. The ambient he did I loved too. I got all his ambient albums he did under the name Mortiis. All of them are good, but Født til å Herske and The Stargate are my favourites... What he did later with The Grudge I didn't like a lot anymore. There's only one song on it that I really like: Way Too Wicked. And I also don't like the image he adopted. He now even ditched the mask! A pity. However, not long ago I discovered the Some Kind of Heroin remix album and I have to admit that there are some really damn good and driving remixes on it, some even done by Mortiis themselves. I'm seriosuly thinking about buying it, it's great... lol, Nocte Obducta is a german band, I understand their lyrics But german lyrics in black metal are actually terrible, to me they always come across in a kind of "I want, but I can't" pseudo-epic way ... nah... And you're right, black metal vocals are always terrible ... grunting, howling, terrible. The only band where I really like it is Finntroll, they're Trolls, they're supposed to grunt ... oh and since I'm a fan of Viking Metal, I can bear the vocals there too, because it adds to the atmosphere of battle and excitement... Although I actually like bands that have the black metal vibe, but have not so terrible vocals. Falkenbach have some good songs in this way, this one for example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dyy1NlbR7bY ... and Bathory aswell, I'm a big fan of Bathory's later albums. And I'm a huge fan of big choirs, preferrably man-choirs. Therion are my heroes when it comes to that, they've got the best symphonic arrangement. Opera metal, absolutely wonderful! That's some vocals that fit to the music.
