hello everyone just like last year, i've noticed that i've picked up much less downtempo music than uptempo this year. seeing that most of my favourite releases were recommended in last year's thread, i've decided to open a new one for 2015. i guess it will also be useful to others in preparation for the upcoming best of 2015 poll. so what are your favourite downtempo/psychill/psydub albums/compilations from 2015? i'll start off with: Ott - Fairchildren (not quite as good as his previous albums, but it's still ott) Illuminus - Sweep Dreams (psydub with half of hux flux. similar to globular but more consistent/not as daring) Phobium - Khronikos (downtempo, one 50min long track)

PERFECT BLIND - Stratum [BMSS Records] has been released on 04/09/2017! Genres: Downtempo / Chill Out / Experimental / Tribal Step Get it here: Digital 16bit on BMSS bandcamp Digital 24bit on BMSS bandcamp Bonus EP + album CD on Perfect Blind bandcamp Stratum is Perfect Blinds most nuanced album to date. Ten soundscapes worthy of epic science fiction or futurist fantasy. Clearly destined for the slowly expanding alternative electronic section on BMSS, these intelligent ambient tunes steer clear of boundaries and limits. Prepare to go beyond the familiar. Ethereal orchestral synths underscore his stirring cinematic interpretations. Deep, convincing beats and esoteric textures combine to create space like vistas. Even as the music gains speed it never loses its intensity or cinematic feel. You may find yourself on the edge of Tribal step or at the border of slower Techno with this exploration into the aesthetics of mechanical sound. You will be drawn into the newly formed solar system of Stratum where you will undoubtedly ponder upon the relationship between ourselves and the stars. Tracklist: 01. Stratum IX 02. Manifest Destiny 03. Ancient Machinery 04. Last Torch of a Dying Star 05. Burning Mass (feat. Jay Kay) 06. Foreseen Consequences 07. Escape Velocity 08. The Expanse (Spaced Out) 09. Abyssentient 10. Artist: Solar Fields Title: Ourdom Label: Sidereal Records Date: March, 2018 1. Burning View 2. Shifting Nature 3. Into The Sun 4. Forgiveness 5. Mountain King 6. Wave Cascade 7. Moving Lines 8. A Long Tailed Bird Whispered 9. Joshua's Shop 10. A Green Walk 11. Parallel Universe 12. The Daylight Carrier 13. Siren Song of Glass Some artists are so deeply connected with a genre that they essential become the face (sound?) of that genre. There are many artist who make downtempo music, but say the name Solar Fields and you understand what you're going to get. Magnus Birgersson from Sweden has been doing this for quite some time and his albums are markers in the chronological history of downtempo music. Any artist would be happy with a genre defining album to their credit yet each new offering from Magnus seems to be that way. His latest however doesn't leave me with the same awe that his previous albums had. That said, I find myself being carried away with his descriptive soundpicture layered with many details ranging from the gentle flutter of electronics to the powerful and majestic. The listing says there are 13 tracks, but I only hear one, deeply immersed in a flowing menagerie that consciously moves from uplifting to a introspective mindstate. Into the Sun is a distinctly positive and hopeful march into the many wonders this world possesses as Forgiveness almost impossibly slowly illustrates the freeing power of letting go. As the tracks seamlessly meld into each other Mountain King is a lengthy almost 15 minute wonder that doesn't establish its identity until well past the 5 minute mark. A progressive rambler that takes flight gently and creates a floating atmosphere bookended by a delicate ambient intro and outro. Due to the length of it Wave Cascade feels like and ambient interlude before another more aggressive and less appealing Moving Lines kicks in. Joshua's Shop gets back to the positivity of previous tracks, while Parallel Universe could be the darkest track on the album. The Daylight Carrier is more aligned with the early tracks of the album and he closes with the beatless ambient of Siren Song. Mastered by Robert Elster the music sounds fantastic further adding to the experience. As I've mentioned with previous Solar Fields albums I feel his strength is the downtempo arena and less when he employs the progressive stomping. His music just seems to breathe and stretch more with a slower bpm. This album could've easily been a disjointed collection of tracks in the hands of a less skilled electronic musician, but he manages to keep things connected by building bridges between tracks instead of walls. So I would say it's a great journey with a few minor flaws. Solar Fields Bandcamp Sidereal (digipak)

I could really use some weed right now. Yes indeed just gather your girlfriends, spark an owl, and just chill to the uber laid back sounds of the Russian duo Koan. With this digital release you can just feel the stress of the day evaporate. This is my definition of chill. Slow, relaxed beats with atmospheric pads interspersed with electronic flutterings. As the title implies, it's all very serene with chopped pads and layered percussion. The mellowness cannot be overstated and you just might have to scrape yourself off the ceiling. It's been six years since the demiurgic duo of shamans, better known as Shamanizm Parallelii introduced their creative work on our label with Psychedelic Dreams album. In the meantime they released two more full-lenght albums with Neogoa and Ae Records (The World In A Drop Of Rain in 2014. and Tales From Colored Tepee in 2016.) and gained attention within psychill circles and community. Now in 2018. they're back with 11 freshly crafted tracks on their 6th studio album - Blue Lizard. Music of Pavel and Arkadii is distinct, but yet very challenging to define with one word, especially on Blue Lizard where they improved their own game of pushing it into the unknown. Sometimes it's oozing with joyful psyrock riffs and late '60s nostalgia, sometimes it explores strange sounds and serves as a soundtrack to deep and immense space. But most of the time it's colorful and trippy downtempo music with a lot of heart and passion. Available in all digital formats here: https://neogoarecords.bandcamp.com/album/blue-lizard Tracklist: 01 - The Blue Lizard 02 - Coyote 03 - Vibrations Of Transformed Consciousness 04 - The Last Trip Of The Ashes Down The Ganges 05 - Apocalypse On Time 06 - In Search Of No Name Captain 07 - Trip Zone 08 - The Mechanical Side Of Time 09 - Dogs, Ghosts And Lots Of Curry 10 - Radio Asia 11 - The White Shaman All tracks written and produced by: Pavel Yashan (vocals, guitars and lyrics) and Arkadii Tronets (synths, drums, mixing and mastering). Artist: Argus Title: Field of Dreams Label: Altar Records Date: February, 2018 1. Long Gone 2. Glaciers of Oblivion 3. Followed By Light 4. Wind Song 5. Field of Dreams 6. Untouchable Mind 7. Ocean of Causes 8. Under the Mountain 9. Nemrak It's Saturday and I've only had one cup of coffee so what better way to chill than to listen to some, uh...chill. Argus is Branko Stojiljkovic from Serbia and for my money one of the best downtempo artists today. His style is drifting, melodic, and so welcoming. I haven't heard his album Architect of Time (my fault), but thoroughly enjoyed Deep Water and Beyond Sight. Right out of the gate with Long Gone he sets you up in your favorite lazy boy with ethereal vocals and a mellow groove. His style of slowly exploring the sonic space is delicious as the ear hunts for new sounds. His movement into and out of breaks is seamless and provides a stunning experience. The music vacillates between cold and warm, but always maintains a thoughtfulness or a melancholy tone. Tracks like Wind Song and Field of Dreams get into that mid-tempo style, but I don't believe that's where his strength is. It's when he stretches a track out, let's it take it's time and allows all the pieces to come together when he wields his greatest power in my opinion. A very good album that was perfect for contemplation between cups of joe. Altar Records Bandcamp Psyshop

Artist: Perfect Blind Title: Replika Label: Self-Released Date: April, 2018 01. The Doctor (Dr.Who Theme Cover) 02. Metropolis (Kraftwerk Cover) 03. Dark Train (Underworld Cover) 04. Immobilized (Front Line Assembly Cover) 05. Replicant (Covenant Cover) 06. Oxygene (Jean Michel Jarre Cover) 07. Dej Mi (Croatian folk song - V2) 08. Sheyn (Haustor Cover) 09. Our Darkness (Anne Clark Cover) 10. A Forest (The Cure Cover) 11. It's No Good (Depeche Mode Cover) 12. End Titles (Vangelis Cover) Perfect Blind (also Deimos) is Igor Čeranić from Croatia and if you do not know who he is stop feeling sorry for yourself and do your homework. This is a fantastic electronic musician that leans towards the darker more industrial side of psytrance. Didn't catch his latest Stratum album? It's so f*cking good. Moody, atmospheric, industrial paradise. That said the guy is a wizard when it comes to electronic music having stretched his programming muscles with downtempo and goa trance music as well as the industrial stuff. With this release he takes a bunch of songs that had some strong personal meaning to him and puts his own spin on them. You know those moments right? First kiss. Ugh, we arrested Michael Jackson for less. First date. I'm not going to lie to you. This might come back to be a problem later. And who could forget the first time you got arrested and the po po wouldn't take you to the bathroom. Good times. So he made a cover album with more modern sounds and an industrial sound. As he himself said it can hardly be classified as Perfect Blind material, but he had a good time doing it so who the f*ck cares. Most of the songs I had never heard so in that respect it made me hit YouTube to see what he did. I have always been a fan of his work and his industrial downtempo version of Dej Mi was very appealing. It's not something I can listen to very frequently, but I applaud him for doing something different that makes him happy. If I made a cover album with songs that were the soundtrack to my life you would think I was a pre-pubescent little girl. Take...on...me! Perfect Blind Bandcamp

Artist: Asura Title: Atmosphere Label: Altar Records Date: April, 2017 1. Frontiers (Final Mix) 2. Always (LS Vintage Edit) 3. The Bhaktas - Pitre Purus (Asura Remix) 4. Eternal Sunshine (Ambient Mix) 5. Le Souffle Du Vent (Second Mix) 6. Deva Delay 7. Reze (Unreleased Version) 8. The Savers 9. Interlude Sky (Remix) Doesn't add up. Another titanic project in psychedelic ambient and downtempo music has seen a bit of roster turnover and is now the solo project of Charles Farewell. Damn, that's a cool name. Even with the departures however this project attempts to continue where the previous album Radio Universe left off. Always leaning toward the dramatic and symphonic this album does so in places. Opening with a very majestic remix of Frontiers it calls to mind a soundtrack for a major motion picture in the making. Vast and lush. The uptempo Ambient Mix of Eternal Shunshine has resounding percussive booms that demand attention while Le Souffle Du Vent has a groovy swagger that I keep coming back to. Reze is another uptempo effort that combines exotic vocals with worldly instruments and a funky groove. Closing things out is a final uptempo track and it leaves me scratching my head and wondering when Asura became a progressive act. As I mentioned this is more of an uptempo or even progressive trance album than a downtempo one. This project has ventured down this road before, but I didn't think he would make an album like this. I prefer the ambient side way more as I found his uptempo stuff decent, but fairly unremarkable. The majority of this album doesn't contain the depth or gravitas I come to expect. So while pretty good, I found my mind wandering while listening to it. As a matter of fact I wouldn't hesitate to say it's the weakest Asura album to date. Altar Bandcamp Psyshop

Artist: Carbon Based Lifeforms Title: Derelicts Label: Leftfield Records Date: October, 2017 1. Accede 2. Derelicts 3. Clouds 4. Nattvasen 5. Equilibrium 6. Path of Least Resistance 7. 780 Days 8. ~42° 9. Rayleigh Scatterers 10. Dodecahedron 11. Loss Eversion 12. Everwave Swedish super duo Carbon Based Lifeforms is back with an album of new material and I've gotta tell you it's superb. Like further cementing their legacy superb. In an interview with Inside the Rift CBL say, "We probably spent way more time on each individual track for this one than any of the previous albums, partly due to the fact that it’s almost entirely done with hardware instruments as opposed to the older tracks which used a lot of software synthesizers." The music is smooth and mellow with acid touches interspersed amidst dreamy layers (Accede, Equilibrium, 780 Days, Dodecahedron). Sometimes warm with welcoming kicks and other times frigid with galaxy spanning pads this music positions itself for deep reflection. Clouds is a reve-inducing beatless journey through the sky while Natvassen (Swedish for "Night Creatures") tells the eerie story of a lost soul encountering and then living with friendly creatures in a forest. The tracks are fairly brief compared to psychedelic music standards and that keeps themes explored from getting stale. The album moves with stomping and grand downtempo marches sprinkled with beatless ambient atmospheres. The entire flow of this album works flawlessly right through Everwave, a drone-ish and lengthy beatless closer. Now admittedly I haven't heard a great amount of downtempo this year, but so far this is tops for me. CBL Bandcamp - Sold Out

Artist: Aural Planet Title: Lightflow Label: Silver Shark Date: 1997 Plunging 1. Intro 2. Pipe Life 3. Head Dream Machine 4. The Motion Image of Pleasure 5. The Deep 6. Blue Water Cave Emerging 7. Have You Ever Been 8. Transphere 9. Synapse 10. M This polish group which is now no longer produced some high quality music during their tenure most notably the classic goa album Part Seconde (which actually came after this one). It's a project that was all over the map electronically, including this their debut. There are plenty of nature sounds that really put you right into pools of water with buzzing insects. With that in mind the music itself is relaxing and smooth exploring a lot of corners. Sometimes it's highly melodic and sometimes it's creative noodling mixing environmental sounds with a futuristic atmosphere. Having said that it's not the best downtempo music I've heard by far and as such I wouldn't label it a classic. Enjoyable.

Aes Dana - Haze (Celestial Mix) 5. Androcell - Caribbeyond 6. Cell - Twisted Sun 7. Androcell - Fungus Garden (Acoustic Mix) 8. H.U.V.A. Network - Rain Geometries (Solar Fields Remix) 9. Ishq - El Morya What an rich and satisfying compilation. Mixed by Vincent Villuis himself it's 12 years old and still hitting all the right notes. All the projects are established in the downtempo genre and they are doing some heavy lifting. Lots of tribal percussion here with ethereal chants, breakbeats, and trance inducing dreams. Special mention goes to the sublime Ohm (Transfix Mix) which is everything you could want in a dreamy, mystical downtempo piece. I don't believe this sub label of Sonic Dragon Records is around any longer which is a shame because it certainly delivered the goods! Beatspace Digital

Artist: Unusual Cosmic Process Title: Aquatic Label: Uxmal Records Date: June, 2014 1. Under the Water 2. Transformation 3. Cosmic Blue (Phase 1) 4. Sanctuary 5. Aquatic 6. Whales 7. Cosmic Blue (Phase II) 8. Tardigrate Take a deep dive and submerse yourself into this aquatic wonderland and you shan't be disappointed. Unusual Cosmic Process is the project of Ukrainian Armen Akopov and I've heard a couple of his releases previously. Unfamiliar with this artist? Check out his track Legend on the Neogoa release Turlitava from 2011. If varied psychill is your thing this one hits all the right notes. The tracks are lush and fully packed with a very dynamic sound. Those sounds echo off each other as if leagues beneath the sea in tracks like Cosmic Blue (Phase I) which transitions from a smooth ambient to a bouncy breakbeat. And those transitions recur frequently in a track like Whales where he combines a whole bunch of styles it can't even really be put into a box. The second part of Cosmic Blue is one of my favorites with it's progressive march. He weaves real instruments with electronica and effects to give the album a floaty yet organic feel. Hell, at times this reminded me of a Jan Hammer production minus the cheese. The tracks are long for maximum immersion and I think he shines when he focuses more on the ambient production. The breakbeat stuff is really good too, but with the length of the tracks being what they are it tends to sound a little generic. Still all in all this was a great release from a great musician. Artist: James Murray Title: Eyes To The Height Label: Ultimae Records Date: December, 2016 1. The Black and The Grey 2. Holloways 3. What Can Be Done 4. Particles (Part 1) 5. Eyes To The Height 6. Ghostwalking 7. Passing Places 8. Laterisers 9. Particles (Part 2) 10. Copestone Ultimae has had a long history of quality downtempo and ambient releases and one could argue also defined the sound itself. Their albums are often dreamy, melancholy dances with the spirit world. Sometimes warm, but often cold and dreary they rarely fail to evoke strong emotions. I've been out of the Ultimae loop for awhile, but thought I would jump in with this release from James Murray. I have to say it ticks all the boxes on the checklist with it's slow, ponderous drift. And even though the album is of short length it is a slow plod. Not necessarily a bad thing yet I find it rather boring and uneventful without any drama. It's more a soundtrack to someone's personal loss or wilderness through which they must journey. It's ethereal without being overly melodic, but it does have that pensive, retrospective feel. It's not until the title track that it wakes from it's catatonia and shows a little motion and positivity. The tracks are relatively short which helps, but I cannot label this a standout by any means. I liked it but feel it works better as a full listen through rather than cherry picking tracks. I get the sense that it can be a grower because of this as it doesn't wow right out of the box. In fact I am warming up to it on multiple listens. Yeah, but I'm sure there's something else out there. Since I deleted that album from the hard drive and have no desire to waste my time I cannot compare the two. What I can tell you is that this is a triplet lovers paradise with a style that has been beaten to death. I enjoy their breaks and use of effects, but the music just doesn't stand out or separate itself from the countless other artists that traffic in the same style. I've started asking myself when reviewing an album if it was good enough that I would want to listen to it again. *2 hours later* You're still here? What album were we talking about? Psyshop

Artist: Maiia Title: Shining Dragon Label: Mystic Sound Records Date: March, 2017 1. Tale About the Shining Dragon 2. Princess From the North 3. Natural Energy (Album Mix) 4. Kurbeats - Phony Phony (Maiia Remix) Yes, very interesting. This is Alla Vagner who should be familiar to all who frequent this forum based on her 2014 release Sky In Diamonds on Ovnimoon Records. It was a pleasant surprise and a breath of fresh air to hear the organic sound melded with goa trance. Sure it 's been done before, but man did she do it well. She gets right after it with the goa tinged breakbeat track Tale About the Shining Dragon and Natural Energy. I believe that she is the female equivalent to Hardfloor. Funky breakbeats layered with that saucy 303 riding shotgun. It's truly body moving music with eerie tones layered over top. Mysterious at times, but always engaging with plenty of tribal affects. Check out Strawberry Lassy...lots of Shponglese going on there. She keeps the tracks relatively short for maximum freshness. While not as eye opening as Diamonds, it nonetheless doesn't fail to impress. Mystic Sound Records Bandcamp

Best enjoyed with a bottle of wine (or two) and a massive pair of headphones.” With the recent wave of synthwave and electronic-heavy scores permeating throughout horror films, such as It Follows, Beyond the Gates, Maniac, and the like, bands like Carbon Based Lifeforms reminds us of other emotions that permeate through the genre. There is just as much beauty, wonder, and majesty to be had in electronica as there is in horror." Track list: 1) Accede 2) Derelicts 3) Clouds 4) Nattväsen 5) Equilibrium 6) Path of Least Resistance 7) 780 Days 8) ~42° 9) Rayleigh Scatterers 10) Dodecahedron 11) Loss Aversion 12) Everwave Absolutely solid!

Keeping the same soul of their previous work, the brothers duo Nickolas and Dimitris Vavalos offers a collection of tracks proposing a heavenly mood and deep dark downtempo groove. This time, the beat goes around 125 bpm! The result is an original twilight progressive chill ablum perfect to put the dancefloor on fire as much during the day as it does at night. Way more intense than we are used to hear from Cabeiri, this album is still profound, mystic and melodic. In a perfect mastery of light and shadow, ''Self Insider'' travels through a whole range of feeling and emotion. Really grounded in a warm bass spectrum, the listener is also invited to enter in to celestial layers of textures. The strength of the entire ablum is in how it brings the listener to experience the nighttime of the consciousness while keeping them in an epic adventure... Epic! This is a great word to descripe the album. Inspired by the Greek mythologies, the tracks exude the chant of the muses and of the gods. It's as if one is always feeling a heroic story unfolding in front of them. Track to track, we hear a mystical background chant leading the way as if a ritual was preparing. Like in ''The Bacchae'', in which a mythical lament develops a strange feeling of peace intertwined with sorrow. Or in ''Mythical Horse'', where a a crystaline femine voice shares the space with multi-layered spectra of warm bass and kicks. Or with ''The Great Ocean'', a sweet heartfelt ballad. Furthermore, this album develops a cohesive strucutre of profound enigmatic sounds while creating a floating structure that brings the listener up to the sky. As in ''Elliptical Orbit'', a slow progression in which darkish tones open the way to melodic and airy harmony. Or the track ''Nothing to Fear'', a deep journey through a psychedelic soundscape. In short, with ''Self Insider'', the Cabeiri brothers deliver again an original collection of tracks. Like no one else, they suceed to fuse deep dark downtempo vibrations with twilight construction. The first time that I listened to the album, I was not sure. A weird feeling of confusion trapped me. I was expecting an album in the same structure of their first ablum ''Inner Thought''. After a few tries, I let go of my expectations and really discovered the universe of this new album. I found it was a perfect compliment to ''Inner Thought'', but in a completely original way. Once again, Cabeiri has the merit to keep the soul of their music project going while developing it in an unexpecting dimension.
