  1. Artist: Various Title: Portal of Perceptions Label: Celestial Dragon Records Date: May, 2005 1. Ishq - Aphrodite 2. Makyo - Jasmine 3. Adham Shaikh - Ohm (Transfix Mix) 4. Aes Dana - Haze (Celestial Mix) 5. Androcell - Caribbeyond 6. Cell - Twisted Sun 7. Androcell - Fungus Garden (Acoustic Mix) 8. H.U.V.A. Network - Rain Geometries (Solar Fields Remix) 9. Ishq - El Morya What an rich and satisfying compilation. Mixed by Vincent Villuis himself it's 12 years old and still hitting all the right notes. All the projects are established in the downtempo genre and they are doing some heavy lifting. Lots of tribal percussion here with ethereal chants, breakbeats, and trance inducing dreams. Special mention goes to the sublime Ohm (Transfix Mix) which is everything you could want in a dreamy, mystical downtempo piece. I don't believe this sub label of Sonic Dragon Records is around any longer which is a shame because it certainly delivered the goods! Beatspace Digital
  2. Artist: Unusual Cosmic Process Title: Aquatic Label: Uxmal Records Date: June, 2014 1. Under the Water 2. Transformation 3. Cosmic Blue (Phase 1) 4. Sanctuary 5. Aquatic 6. Whales 7. Cosmic Blue (Phase II) 8. Tardigrate Take a deep dive and submerse yourself into this aquatic wonderland and you shan't be disappointed. Unusual Cosmic Process is the project of Ukrainian Armen Akopov and I've heard a couple of his releases previously. Unfamiliar with this artist? Check out his track Legend on the Neogoa release Turlitava from 2011. If varied psychill is your thing this one hits all the right notes. The tracks are lush and fully packed with a very dynamic sound. Those sounds echo off each other as if leagues beneath the sea in tracks like Cosmic Blue (Phase I) which transitions from a smooth ambient to a bouncy breakbeat. And those transitions recur frequently in a track like Whales where he combines a whole bunch of styles it can't even really be put into a box. The second part of Cosmic Blue is one of my favorites with it's progressive march. He weaves real instruments with electronica and effects to give the album a floaty yet organic feel. Hell, at times this reminded me of a Jan Hammer production minus the cheese. The tracks are long for maximum immersion and I think he shines when he focuses more on the ambient production. The breakbeat stuff is really good too, but with the length of the tracks being what they are it tends to sound a little generic. Still all in all this was a great release from a great musician. 4. Artist: James Murray Title: Eyes To The Height Label: Ultimae Records Date: December, 2016 1. The Black and The Grey 2. Holloways 3. What Can Be Done 4. Particles (Part 1) 5. Eyes To The Height 6. Ghostwalking 7. Passing Places 8. Laterisers 9. Particles (Part 2) 10. Copestone Ultimae has had a long history of quality downtempo and ambient releases and one could argue also defined the sound itself. Their albums are often dreamy, melancholy dances with the spirit world. Sometimes warm, but often cold and dreary they rarely fail to evoke strong emotions. I've been out of the Ultimae loop for awhile, but thought I would jump in with this release from James Murray. I have to say it ticks all the boxes on the checklist with it's slow, ponderous drift. And even though the album is of short length it is a slow plod. Not necessarily a bad thing yet I find it rather boring and uneventful without any drama. It's more a soundtrack to someone's personal loss or wilderness through which they must journey. It's ethereal without being overly melodic, but it does have that pensive, retrospective feel. It's not until the title track that it wakes from it's catatonia and shows a little motion and positivity. The tracks are relatively short which helps, but I cannot label this a standout by any means. I liked it but feel it works better as a full listen through rather than cherry picking tracks. I get the sense that it can be a grower because of this as it doesn't wow right out of the box. In fact I am warming up to it on multiple listens. Yeah, but I'm sure there's something else out there. 5. Artist: Side Effects Title: Next Destination Label: Tech Safari Records Date: September, 2017 1. Next Destination 2. Space Travel (with Sonic Sense) 3. What Is Real (with IIai) 4. Burning Man 5. Eruption 6. Waves of Sound 7. Electro Magnetic (with Helber Gun) 8. We Are Not Alone 9. Storm 10. Human Archetyp (with Seamoon) I know what you're thinking. He hasn't posted a review in months and he comes with this obscure nonsense? Yeah I know, but I don't control the mood that strikes me. You never know what's going to hit you or where the review... *38 minutes later* Sorry, I was watching an episode of Modern Family. What were we talking about? Ah, this digital album by an Israeli duo. Last I heard of them was the disastrous City On Mars album. Since I deleted that album from the hard drive and have no desire to waste my time I cannot compare the two. What I can tell you is that this is a triplet lovers paradise with a style that has been beaten to death. I enjoy their breaks and use of effects, but the music just doesn't stand out or separate itself from the countless other artists that traffic in the same style. I've started asking myself when reviewing an album if it was good enough that I would want to listen to it again. *2 hours later* You're still here? What album were we talking about? Psyshop

  7. The debut release from Denis Aksenov with the project Mapadha. These are two pacifying tracks of electronic downtempo with a soft melody and a measured rhythmic drum. Not hasty but assertive with a warm, natural and earthly sensation. This music evokes the imagination and easily draws soften, balanced and beautiful forms in the mind of the listeners. 8. https://www.blood-music.com/store-us/67-carbon https://carbonbasedlifeforms.bandcamp.com/ "“Using a vast array of analog synthesis alongside sampled dishwashers, water pumps, escalators, and teething toys; the album comments on the most organic of life forces through its own constructed machines. Recalling similar atmospheres as Brian Eno’s Apollo music, Aphex Twin’s early works, and Boards Of Canada – CBL is the obscure soundtrack to a longstanding search between the nature of Earth and extraterrestrial existence. Best enjoyed with a bottle of wine (or two) and a massive pair of headphones.” With the recent wave of synthwave and electronic-heavy scores permeating throughout horror films, such as It Follows, Beyond the Gates, Maniac, and the like, bands like Carbon Based Lifeforms reminds us of other emotions that permeate through the genre. There is just as much beauty, wonder, and majesty to be had in electronica as there is in horror." 9. Artist: Perfect Blind Title: Stratum Label: BMSS Records Date: September, 2017 01. Stratum IX 02. Manifest Destiny 03. Ancient Machinery 04. Last Torch of a Dying Star 05. Burning Mass (feat. Jay Kay) 06. Foreseen Consequences 07. Escape Velocity 08. The Expanse (Spaced Out) 09. Abyssentient 10. The Long Silent Igor Čeranić otherwise known as Deimos and Perfect Blind has produced a lot of material as well as been the guy you could count on making other artist's work sound great. I've said it before, but he could do the mastering on my toaster and have it sound competent. I first heard his work as Perfect Blind with the stunning Three Spires Ep which you can download in all its FLAC goodness for free from Ektoplazm. He treads in various genres and has shown proficiency in all of them. Industrial influences abound within this dark and brooding album. He is the anti-Ultimae with sharp edged and rumbling waves of sound in a Orwellian post apocalyptic world. Tracks could have easily come from the minds at Cold Meat Industry as the desolation sticks to the skin like burning cinders. Long intros illustrate a panoramic grey landscape with lush textures. Ancient Machinery reveals the tools of a bygone age wet with corrosion and seeping with forlorn mechanical regret. Last Torch of a Dying Star with its thunderous percussion draws the lines of warring tribes readying themselves for conflict. Burning Mass is the result of that conflict with its distortion soaked guitar and blistering volume. Forseen Consequences surveys the charred battlefield steeped in loss and regret as the battle all but blotted out the sun leaving only mottled grey clouds. The Expanse is as boundless as its namesake while Abyssentient continues down the long road of human destruction. The Long Silent bears witness to what we have done. This is so f*cking interesting and descriptive it invites you to create your own futuristic movie. People please pay attention to this. I don't believe it's hyperbolic to say that Igor is our generation's Tim Schuldt. When music can evoke crystal clear images and an emotional response that's when you know the height of the art form has been reached. Drawing on industrial influences he creates a world I hope we never see yet at the same time I must see. Stratum is a special piece of music best enjoyed at full volume, listened all the way through when you have ample time to devote to it. Brilliant and breath taking and oh so vast in scope. P.S. I haven't heard the bonus Ep so therefore I cannot comment on it. Perfect Blind Bandcamp

  14. Artist: Various Title: Locomotion Label: Hado Records Date: June, 2015 1. Chronos - Urban Life 2. MentalImage - Somewhere Between Worlds 3. E-mantra - Minimal Butterfly 4. Spectrum Vision - Inox (Chronos Remix) 5. JBC Arkadii & Konstantin Zhirov - Meteor Fall 6. G-light feat. M. Mayborn - Mysteries of Light 7. SynSUN - Mechanical 8. JBC Arkadii - Aquanautica 9. Harax - Rill 10. Filteria - Lyva Chill music that...isn't that chill? Where offerings from Ultimae are usually a relaxing and calm ride all the way through, this is psytrance with low bpms. The broad umbrella of psychill is varied indeed and I would say if you want to float away to music this would not be the vehicle. The label itself calls this compilation eccentric. And they are absolutely correct. That said this collection of music from some very well known artists will find a foothold. Tracks range from noisy and harsh (SynSUN) to smooth deep space exploration. It's music by artists that you know are straying from their comfort zone. Hell E-mantra has been making psychill for years now, but are you ready for some deep space ambient from Filteria? How about the re-emergence of G-light with a very rewarding offering? How about the 80's-esque guitar solos on Meteor Fall by JBC Arkadii? As I mentioned there won't be any shut eye being had listening to this, but it's cool to see different ground being tread upon. This one grows on me every time I listen to it. Hado Records Psyshop Beatspace
  15. Artist: Scann-Tec Title: Unyt Label: Ultimae Records Date: June, 2016 1. Snova I Snova 2. Unyt 3. Quantum Evo 4. Ne Viden 5. Svet 6. Kinostat 7. Parsec 8. Delta-V 9. Nadezhd 10. Turgenev Russian artist Vladislav Isaev has released his third album and if you read his Discogs blurb the man loves sounds. All sounds. Any sounds. He'd probably record the conversation between you and your mother telling you to visit more. And what he's done with his sound collection is quintessential Ultimae. The booming bass contrasted with the twinkling highs on Snova I Snova is a magnificent contrast and what you can expect to hear throughout the album. The 24 bit sound is incredible filling the room with glorious imagery. Unyt lopes along in a dreamy haze while Quantum Evo drops the slow hammer while a melancholy vocal soars above. The juicy and sneaky bass amidst the high, puffy clouds of Svet is the stuff of dreams. Parsec may be the pinnacle of lush, vibrant downtempo with its driving yet calming sound. Delta-V is the most uptempo track here and has a long ambient buildup before the thumping kick arrives with authority. None of the tracks are in any hurry to get where they're going. Matter of fact it's life in slow motion. This truly is an example of the journey being more important than the destination. Each sound is crystal clear with many layers and works well whether you're looking for a deep, meaningful trip or just some background music. The whole thing is floaty and relaxing and isn't that what this type of music is supposed to do? Nailed it. Ultimae Bandcamp
  16. Artist: Saluberrimae Title: Time Is A Flat Circle Label: Neogoa Records Date: March, 2017 01 - Trapped Inside (95 BPM) 02 - Jesenné Prebúdzanie Do Letného Rána (80 BPM) 03 - Jennifer Connelly (80 BPM) 04 - Time Is A Flat Circle (70 BPM) 05 - Loophole (70 BPM) 06 - The Abyss (95 BPM) 07 - Čiernobiela (70 BPM) 08 - Frozen (110 BPM) 09 - Večerná Ciga Na Balkóne (80 BPM) 10 - Gestonkenflapped (70/140 BPM) "I had a dream last night when I woke up, I remembered it but...just a moment ago...huh. It's gone" The downtempo/psychill side project of Lukáš Bartošek (Goatree) is a nice mix of dub, chill, and ethnic music with real instruments. There is so much to unpack here with a bunch of great ideas. A lot of the tracks have a repetitive phrase which brings a sci-fi feel as if big brother is watching. Very mechanical and sets the stage well. The title track is a pensive thinker that exhibits a slow, hypnotic burn. Loophole has a slow awakening like a beast being preparing for a strike. Čiernobiela has a post apocalyptic feel with a ponderous hip-hop beat. Reminded me of NIN Reptilian. Frozen turned into an industrial influenced crawl with a very throaty 303. Was that a bit of Southern guitar licks on track 9? Felt like a hot summer day on the Mississippi delta. So what it does, it does well. While I liked the ideas unfortunately a few did not realize their potential. Either there wasn't enough evolution or the great bits didn't last long enough. The jazzy elements in tracks 2 and 3 just weren't for me. It's good music and I like where he's going, but for the above reasons it misses greatness. But just.

Genres: Downtempo / Chill Out / Experimental / Tribal Step Get it here: Digital 16bit on BMSS bandcamp Digital 24bit on BMSS bandcamp Bonus EP + album CD on Perfect Blind bandcamp Stratum is Perfect Blinds most nuanced album to date. Ten soundscapes worthy of epic science fiction or futurist fantasy. Clearly destined for the slowly expanding alternative electronic section on BMSS, these intelligent ambient tunes steer clear of boundaries and limits. Prepare to go beyond the familiar. Ethereal orchestral synths underscore his stirring cinematic interpretations. Deep, convincing beats and esoteric textures combine to create space like vistas. Even as the music gains speed it never loses its intensity or cinematic feel. You may find yourself on the edge of Tribal step or at the border of slower Techno with this exploration into the aesthetics of mechanical sound. You will be drawn into the newly formed solar system of Stratum where you will undoubtedly ponder upon the relationship between ourselves and the stars. Tracklist: 01. Stratum IX 02. Sulfur 9. Evenfall 10. The Unexpected Hours Just wanted to write a little blurb about this release. It's a collaboration between two very good artists on the Ultimae label that deserves your attention. Collecting tracks from three Ep's (Alkaline, Cut., and The Unexpected Hours) it's dark and very introspective, perfect for overcast and rainy days. Glitchy sounds and percussion abound; vehicles for daydreaming and listening to time dissolve away. Futuristic and cold with a firm grasp of the melancholy. The sound is rich throughout and rarely have I felt such a feeling of isolation. To me all the tracks flow together into one fluid production which prevent me from discerning whether one was better than another. Nicely done. Journey To Persia (Extended Mix) 4. Gates Of Heaven (Extended Live Mix) 5. Shadows And Lights (Extended Mix) Vincent Grenier is a French artist who has crafted some of the most gorgeous downtempo and progressive trance I've ever heard. His style is symphonic and wide open like the skies of Montana. No space is left untouched as his music reaches deep and lush soundscapes. These five tracks for an Ep (almost an hour of music) are versions that were unreleased from his two albums. One track Journey to Persia I've never heard before. The music is mellow, lengthy, melancholy and dream inducing characterized by long intros and outros. It's truly storytelling at its finest. It's been a while since his last album and I sure hope he will have more music soon. Altar Records Bandcamp (24 bits)

Kurbeats - Phony Phony (Maiia Remix) Yes, very interesting. This is Alla Vagner who should be familiar to all who frequent this forum based on her 2014 release Sky In Diamonds on Ovnimoon Records. It was a pleasant surprise and a breath of fresh air to hear the organic sound melded with goa trance. Sure it 's been done before, but man did she do it well. She gets right after it with the goa tinged breakbeat track Tale About the Shining Dragon and Natural Energy. I believe that she is the female equivalent to Hardfloor. Funky breakbeats layered with that saucy 303 riding shotgun. It's truly body moving music with eerie tones layered over top. Mysterious at times, but always engaging with plenty of tribal affects. Check out Strawberry Lassy...lots of Shponglese going on there. She keeps the tracks relatively short for maximum freshness. While not as eye opening as Diamonds, it nonetheless doesn't fail to impress. Mystic Sound Records Bandcamp
  23. Artist: Narcose Title: Panda Eyes Label: Mystic Sound Records Date: January, 2017 1. Gathering Clouds 2. Gonzos Last Ride 3. Smoke Signals 4. Panda Eyes 5. Inuit 6. The Shores of Idaho 7. Nighthawk 8. Floating Through Space Anyone who doesn't like pandas ranks right up there with being a member of Isis. They're so cute and adorable! Mystic Sound records has carved out a solid reputation for releasing some great downtempo music that you can find all over Ektoplazm including this release. This is Graham Roberts from the UK with a very smooth and relaxing downtempo foray. Funk is applied lightly in a track like Gonzos Last Ride which was quite enjoyable even if I felt it went on a tad too long. The percussion is realistic sounding as if he recorded it live. Listen to the epic title track and it sounds like the drummer is in the room! The slow beat and bass music combine to create a level of eerieness, but again...sounded like a 5 minute song stretched to 10. The breaks allow a new direction and sound quite interesting. While not groundbreaking it certainly is mellow and relaxing. Recommended. Free at Ektoplazm

  25. Greek producers Vasilis Kesalidis and Ioannis Konstantios started One Arc Degree with the intent to explore how music can trigger different emotional responses and memories, and then channel those evocations back into the music itself in a continuous cycle of discovery and renewal. With Cosmos in Flux, their Synphaera debut, One Arc Degree explores the mutable world of space-time on a micro-scale: “There is no reason that spacetime needs to be fundamentally smooth. We can imagine it consisting of many small, ever-changing, regions in which space and time are not definite, but fluctuate in a foam-like manner. As we probe at smaller scales, about ten times a billionth of the diameter of hydrogen's nucleus, spacetime foam reveals itself, an ocean of quantum bubbles through which light travels, cosmos in flux.” —One Arc Degree Releases May 16, 2017 https://synphaera.bandcamp.com/album/cosmos-in-flux
