Suitably, not a very new CD player =) It's an old Onkyo that will be replaced by a Pioneer DV-668 (which has DVD-A and SACD as well as amazingly good CD playback) whenever I can afford it. I have 3 turntables - One Technics 1210, One crappy Reloop DJ turntable and one high-end Thoréns which needs a new tone arm so it's currently not in use. It has a Linn cartridge thats pretty good. I have one dedicated separate phono amp and the two DJ decks connected to a Vestax PMC270A mixer. My amp is a NAD C370 and I've got Focal-JMlab Cobalt 806 speakers on Atakama stands and with the most high-end Supra speaker cables. Speaking of multi-channel stuff, I think the next Deedrah album will be 5.1 and I believe Son Kite is working with 6 channels too.

Yeah tell me about it - ALL my money goes to records. And I'm a big fan of both Anaal Nathrakh and Steve Roach, which is about as extreme apart as you can possibly get =) It's true that there's good stuff coming out still and that there's always been plenty of crap among the jewels, but for me the crap releases have gone from being just dull to nauseating - I can listen to a pretty crappy goa album and just feel bored, but a crappy release from today is torture - this is the reason I can no longer summon the energy it takes to look for the good stuff in this genre.

The almighty italians were heavily into Jim Morrison quite early on, and while I'm not into poetry much, that's some seriously high-class trippy stuff. Moon In Your Window, Intense Visitation, and some more I think, but it's too early in the morning =) But I agree there Basilisk, the hollywood crap isn't cutting it. But I somehow doubt that 19-year old kids with the latest VSTi's will make sense of any "higher" poetry, if they would bother tracking it down at all. But this gaev ME good ideas for sample material =)

I consider myself a fairly dedicated goa/psy-trance listener - my record collection should be evidence enough. But I don't buy anything new in this genre, I have given up completely. I'm sure there's some nice progressive stuff out once in a while, but I just can't be arsed to go find it among the shitloads of crap that's getting released. For a long time I was keeping up just for the sake of it, just to keep in touch with the "scene" and out of fear of missing something that would actually be good. But finally I realized that no, it's not worth it. I can find much more interesting music by digging up older stuff that I missed when it was released and getting into other genres of music. So thats what I've been doing ever since, and I'm enjoying it.

Without a psychoactive agent?!
ukiro replied to Goa Travellers's topic in Music Making and Production/Industry
I doubt the music is composed and produced while tripping heavily. BUT the psychoactive substances might have previously opened doors and given birth to ideas and perspectives that would otherwise have been unreachable. -
Yeah there are some amazingly uninspired ones around - I generally cringe at titles that include some sort of synth reference since it displays such a huge lack of imagination - "uhm lets see, the track is done, now I need a name... uhm... cutoff! octave! oscillator!" The fact that a lot of artists don't speak english natively is of course a handicap - Israel has given us track titles like "Ice Is Nice" (Alien Project, who also must be one of the most retarded cliché names ever), and engrish grammar bastardization like the infamous "Lerger Then Life", "Let It Bent" (Gataka), "Who Touch My Base Line?" (Talamasca vs Skazi), "There She Go" (Skazi again, from the same record), "Why To Be Normal !?" (album by Nissimyani, with the track titled "Coridoors"), and it just goes on and on... But even the ones that aren't grossly misspelled rarely convey any sense of meaning or message. They could just as well be called "track 1", "track 2" etc...

No you don't need to have it for free, thats bullshit. It's a tired old phrase, but still true - Buy the stuff you like and support the artists.

You could always mimic that sound now that it's been done, but to pioneer it I think you really need either psychedelics or a mind that's pretty damn weird by default. -
Boards of Canada "Music Has The Right To Children"
ukiro replied to psytones's topic in General Psytrance
The original CD version (which I have) has 17 tracks, the last being "One Very Important Thought". The Warp Records re-issue had "Happy Cycling" added as an 18th track. -

Check discogs.com - there's a version of MHTRTC with an extra 18th track, try to find that one. The extra track is available on a Peel Session CD though, if memory serves me right. -
Goa/psy very rarely has any intelligent or interesting titles. It's usually generic, shallow and dull - not necessarily embarrasingly bad, but still... Acts like Ticon has a few funny ones (some require you to speak swedish to get it, like "Shaken, not störd"). But serious and intelligent titles are rare.

Bypass Unit has nothing to do with Kris Kylven or Pete Martin. They were (are?) a danish act consisting of M.Jacobsen, J.Sieburg & Rene Abildgaard Jensen.

hundreds, eh? =)

The last part of CD2 of sun trip 2, 3, 4 are experimental techno. Not very good, either...but these compilations are all worth tracking down, for sure. The fifth one is strictly techno though.

Here it is on a compilation

Any such tests I've seen (and I've read a few) have been conducted with very short listening sessions. The human hearing is much better att discerning differences if it can acclimatize first, so listen to MP3s for two hours and then switch to the same music from CD, played through the same system (and obviously a boombox or little computer speakers won't do) - Then I assure you that the difference can't be denied. When I've ripped vinyl to MP3s, the difference between the raw WAV and the MP3 is very easy to hear. The warmth and dynamics of the sound changes quite a bit, and when you go back and forth it's totally obvious.

Yes. Or DAT masters, at least. But due to the medium, laws of physics make it so that the 44100 samples per second on a CD master are smoothened out. On a CD, the higher the frequency, the closer to a triangle wave it gets, since there wont be enough samples per oscillation to shape it correctly. A CD can't contain a 10000 Hz sine wave, for example - it becomes jagged and ugly. This is a main reason why vinyl is often percieved as having a smoother and warmer sound. Also, because of how vinyl is mastered, the dynamics often sound different. For me personally, I tend to enjoy the vinyl style of dynamics more than that of CDs, although there are exceptions ofcourse.
-
You seriously need to clip some bass frequencies in the leads and effect sounds, it would make the mix far less muddy. Now don't get me wrong, I love that "dirty" style of oldschool trance, but I'm saying this because even to my goa-loving ears, some cleaning up will do your music good. It does sound very "authentic" though! Other than that it sounds OK, but there appears to be some sort of midi timing issues? It feels a bit glitchy. The high mids could use a boost too. /Mr Complains-a-lot

...which is understandable if you haven't heard much high-quality vinyl played on a good system. It does cost a bit of money to make vinyl justice. But now you're contradicting yourself by admitting that there is an audible difference =)
-
When did I (or d-dave) ever make any such statement? I have plenty of CDs and I'm sure David does as well. BUT I can still prefer one format over the other, and the discussion was now about there being an audible difference or not - noone said CDs can't be listened to. And yes, even with fairly standard equipment just about anyone could tell the difference if they tried, I'm perfectly sure. I would guess that you, as Cinos, don't have a turntable or a decent stereo system. Anyone who has actively listened to music on both vinyl and CD will tell you they sound differently. I really don't understand how you can argue against this.
-
Woohoo! Jag ska kolla upp det! (tack för infon)
-
I think that's complete bullshit. Do you even own a turntable?
-
Judging by the name and the sound, it's probably something by this artist. Wouldn't call it psy-trance though.

Making songs in a certain key?
ukiro replied to zee_werp's topic in Music Making and Production/Industry
yeah this is what I do. I have no musical schooling and I'm not making any serious efforts to become a musician. So I just use phrygian and move to a base note that sounds good with the bass sound I'm using... although I guess I will learn more some day, like whenever I bother buying a midi keyboard =) Anyway, phrygian C is: C, C#, D#, F, G, G#, A# the half-tone intervals (C, C# and G, G# in this example) is where you want most of the action for that really goan vibe. -

Screw minor, go phrygian =)
