Well if you're a true collector at heart, you'd know - there is so much more to collecting than just having the items. Some people dedicate their lives to collecting stamps, which is arguably far more "worthless" than records - at least I get a whole lot of excellent music in the experience =) And I don't drink alcohol, I don't travel around much... I chose to spend my money on records because I find that it gives me more satisfaction per euro spent. I wholeheartedly enjoy sorting and organizing things, so achieving complete collections of a record label or artist is very satisfying on more levels than just having the music. While I fully understand that there is a charm in hunting great unreleased music as well, I must point out that there is so incredibly much great music released that there's not much lost if you focus only on vinyls and "proper" CD's. I have a decent amount of unreleased stuff too, rest assured, but my collection is for real records. Finding good unreleased stuff is for my love of the music. There's an important difference.

Well a complete discography isn't a complete discography if you don't have everything, now is it? And if having MP3's (I'm referring to Intense Visitation) counts as "having the complete discography", well then I think this entire discussion is pointless. Anyone could download them you know... And in my opinion, a complete discography should include all released material by a band or artist. I know you know a lot obout this type of music and I assume you have a pretty neat record collection. It's just that I strongly disagree with your definition of complete discography and I was under the impression that we were discussing records here, not MP3's.

Now pardon me for doubting, as you may indeed be telling the truth here, but do you have the Intense Visitation vinyl? The Asian Code 12"? The etched Alcyone 12"? Their first release on Brainstorm records? To my knowledge, noone on the planet has all of them. The North Central Positronics 12"? And all his bazillions of other appearances? Honestly now... The promo only HH10 001 single? The releases on Where's The Party and Outloud? Their debut appearance from 1992 on "Cyberworld"? And the Future sound of london and Aphex Twin... dude, you don't have complete discographies by these artists =) Sorry for the harsh coming down on you here, but "complete discographies" should mean that you have all their releases and not "all albums on cd, at least the good ones" or whatever. I collect Old Etnica myself, still missing some. I have all Transwave releases (both CD and vinyl) but not all compilation appearances. I have about 230-ish Björk records, but I'm not actively collecting her stuff right now. I have all releases, both cd and vinyl, on Celtic Records. I have all 12" singles on Symbiosis, including the unreleased #16. I am approaching a complete 12" series on TIP and apart from one or two, have everything Dragonfly released on vinyl throughout the nineties, including the never released Infinity Project 12". I hope to have all major labels complete one day, but I'm unfortunately not made of money =/

Yeah thats a dirty little fucker =) I really like the noisy production on that one, everything is far too clean and sterile these days. BRING THE NOISE! Oh, and another great 303 track I don't think has been mentioned is the Doof remixes of Prana's "Message To Eastedge" and Hallcuinogen's "LSD". I've played both in my sets, to great effect.

It's this one, right? http://www.discogs.com/release/362949

Did the packaging turn out OK? I fixed the final layout for it but haven't recieved my copy yet. I didn't do the actual design though, I use better typefaces and vector graphics instead of pixels for typesetting ;-)

I believe thats some clone synth and not a real 303, actually =) EDIT: ok so now I looked it up and it mght have been some modified 303 so I'm half wrong it seems.

Green Nuns - "Cor".... the one after the breaks is just so lovely. and how could I forget: P.Cok - "Double Doper" - Not sure if it's really a 303 or some clone (Jannis? you know?) but HOLY HELL it's got some amazing acid lines!

Could it be that Generator X track by Dark Nebula maybe? Originally released here: http://www.discogs.com/release/216738 and then re-released here: http://www.discogs.com/release/292343

Hey, Dark Funeral are Swedish, not norwegian =) And while I realize you're thinking of the black metal act from Bergen, there is also a Swedish synth band called Covenant. The norwegians spell it "Kovenant" on some releases though. And while we're threadjacking this to be about black metal, let me recommend Swedish band Shining as well as Velvet Cacoon and Weakling from the US.

I took a quick listen at these... Sample1: Jaïa - "Sentences To Heaven" The rest I don't know, but I am 100% positive I have the track in the beginning of Sample7 somewhere... but it seems there's a mix in here, and whatever the track is from 1:30 and onwards I can't say I recognize it.

Post a sample and someone (such as myself) might be able to identify it.

Is it "possible" to do all mix in Flstudio5

Indeed older stuff generally has very weak basses. But Organic Noise were Jan Müller and Planet B.E.N., so there's an exception =) But for envelope predictability and control digital is indeed far superior. But that bubbly, organice and LIVING feeling that they managed to get into some of their tracks, combined with the depth and warmth of the sounds, have yet to be matched using digital equipment, IMO. I realize I've managed to threadjack this into being about bass, but I'll keep going anyway =) Indeed letting the bottom end of the bass go through without compression or EQ will generally give a nicer and warmer sound than the ultra-compressed and EQ'ed norm of today. As has been pointed out before, by you especially, having the sound tweaked to perfection at the generating source is generally preferrable over heavy EQ'ing and other post-processing. I think I might need to start a separate thread about bass now... =) -
I beg to differ. There are some AMAZING tracks scattered among the plethora of lesser known releases, especieally from 94-97. There's a fair bit of incredible stuff that never made it to CD either.

Yeah I've used the PSP plugin for a lot of basses and even kicks (although in moderation, naturally). Generally, tape or tube warmth simulator plugins seem to be fairly convincing and useful for low and mid frequencies, but the jagged sharpness of high synth sounds is more difficult to remedy. I'll have to check out the VSTi's you mentioned though. Oh, and speaking of bass... Dig out some really analog old bassline stuff (like the Organic Noise 12"'s on TIP) and compare with VSTi's... Digital still has a long way to go, in my opinion. -

I'd be very curious too. I use FL just to toy around - I've never been very serious about producing music, but I do enjoy messing around with sounds. It's just a theory, but I think many people using FL have cheaper sound cards and monitors. This could be to their disadvantage in such a mixdown comparison. Is the mixing affected by the bit depth capability of the sound card, or is it all done in the theoretical 32 bits and then mixed down to whatever the maximum output of the sound card is? I have a crummy old 16/44.1 card and would like the added dynamics of a 24 bits... also, creating screaming analog-esque sounds in software with a mere 44.1kHz seems futile, as the sounds become harsh and unpleasant too easily. I would like some additional sample points to help with overtones and controlling the waveforms in the upper frequencies, but then again a track with good old analog howlin' synths (like old 96-ish etnica stuff) still sounds great mixed down to 44.1, so I'm not sure what the problem is - are the VSTi's simply not good enough or what? (sorry to include this slightly offtopic paragraph but I've been wondering about this for quite some time.) Regarding the pitch shift algoritms, the realtime ones in FL are horrible - I sometimes get very noticeable and uncomfortable treble overtones when pitching a kick drum just a note or two. But once you export it to WAV using the best setting (which wasn't even listed in the comparison table linked above) it does indeed sound great. But to remedy this and avoid having to export and re-import samples, I make all my kick drums very deep - in fact, much too deep for using as-is, so that I can shape them individually for the track later without having to ever pitch down, so I can avoid losing the already limited 44.1kHz resolution. -
There's ALWAYS more =) While this site has mention of quite a few rare items, check Discogs.com and you'll soon find there's tons more. Neigher site is complete, but Discogs is growing more so very rapidly.

These compilations are excellent for anyone trying to get an overview of the evolution of this genre, as well as getting your hands on the jewels among the thousands of tracks out there. Remember that they were printed in very large numbers, so don't go paying too much for them. These show up on eBay and elsewhere on a regular basis. If you can find them cheap, the duplicate track appearances among the different series isn't a problem really as you'll find nice exclusive tracks on pretty much all of them. (Well, exclusive as in "not featured on any of the other major compilation series".)

I'm interested for sure. We should probably settle the deal in private though. I'll give you my e-mail adderss through a PM here on the site.

Dude, lay off the shrooms, that's no official microsoft site.

If you're interested in help with finding buyers and/or ripping, let me know =) I've ripped about 300 of my vinyls so far (about a bazillion left though...) and I'm somewhat into buying/selling old vinyl. I even travel around ourside of Sweden to pick stuff up just to sell it... so I have the buyers you want =)
-
Indeed it's nice! And I'll go ahead and be a total show-off prick and point out that I have the original vinyl release =) http://www.discogs.com/release/214731

There's one on gemm for 32 dollars and another for 38.50, but thats just silly. With a little patience and effort you can get it for 10 euro or less I'm sure. Make a search agent on both gemm and ebay and it'll show up eventually.

oh, I forgot - I sometimes also post in the forums on discogs.com but there are quite a few narrow-minded elitist house/techno pricks in there bashing anything even reminicent of trance, so it's fairly pointless from a goa/psy perspective.
