  1. i might swipe "Enlightened Ape" as a trackname though > The reason it's so difficult to get strait answers in music production is because experienced producers have realized that you can only really get there with the amount of experience you have with the gear and tools. So true.. it also took some time for me to realize that you cannot learn that stuff from asking questions... Answers help a lot to get you into the right direction, but at the end it's always left to your ears... and they don't learn from your eyes reading letters.. but from pratice =)
  2. Nice to see my answer was helpful to you Another idea that might be useful to you: get some good headphones. IMHO listening on headphones is essential for a mix unless you have a fully blown high end studio. The usual hobbyist-bedroom-studio is far from being perfect in terms of acoustic properties. By using headphones you remove the issues of interfering reflections, wrong speaker setup, ect. And I'm NOT saying that you shall get rid of the monitors.. hell NO! listen to both during mix. ;D I have KRK RP6 monitors + Sennheiser HD-380 headphone and the difference between when listening to a mix is quite drastic. i.e. I can't hear distorted kick-drums because of over-compression on KRK at all, unless it becomes very obvious, while on the headphone I can hear it immediately. This is vice versa while tuning the bass saturation. There I cannot use the headphones - if I change low-band crossover (in between 150-300Hz), I only hear a minimal difference on the headphones, while the change is quite significant on the KRK.
  3. That's true, but you cannot solve that during production - or how do you want to know about the speaker setup on the stage, while doing the mix on the studio?

IMHO the sound changes of you move around the room because of reflections, not phasing. i.e. if you move behind the speakers, your ears can't directly catch the acoustic sound waves as emitted by the speaker, but you still hear the sound. You hear it because the acoustic sound waves emitted from the speaker, hit the wall in front of the speaker, hit the wall left to you, hit wall right to you ... hit your ear. If you miss certain frequencies when standing behind the speaker, it has nothing to do with phasing, but how your wall is build. It simply absorbs certain frequencies and since you only hear what's reflected by the wall, you don't hear those frequencies. Phasing is important when it comes to mixing. If you mix 2 channels, whit same signal, but 180° phase offset, they cancel each other. Think of an addition of 2 similar sine waves. If they are in phase, the peak will be 2 * original peak. If you offset the second signal by 180°, signal 1 has positive peak, while signal 2 has negative peak ==> -1 + 1 = 0. Second area where phasing is relevant is the speaker setup. Acoustic sound waves travel trough the air with a speed of about 340m per second. So it needs about 3ms to travel 1m. Period time of a 1kHz signal (period time means the time until a sine signal is back to start when playing 1kHz) is 1ms. So half period time (180°) is 0.5ms. Now think of a setup where you play this 1kHz sine, with 1 speakers 3m away from you and second one 4,5m. Signal from speaker A reaches you ear after 1ms. Signal from speaker B arrives 0.5ms later, which is a 180° offset to the first one on 1kHz => signal from B cancels signal from A. If A signal is +1, B signal will be -1 = 0. But this is nothing you need to worry about during production - modern array / sound-systems have tons of DSP chips to solve exactly that issue. > I do have a question though. Do you have issue with phasing on your mix? As said above - changing sound because you move around the room hasn't do to anything with phasing on your stereo mix (if you produce mulit-channel audio this is a different story), but with reflections on your room. Edit: To find out if there are phase problems in your mix, simply play/render it mono. If certain frequencies disappear when switching from stereo to mono, you have stereo phase problems. If it sounds ok, stereo phase is fine.

  7. Well, IMHO the difference between an owner and a manager (not only related to music bizz) is: The owner has a high personal interest on the project. He put a lot of his time, money & whatever into it and he might depend on the project to be successfully (for being able to pay his bills) .. It's all about the project. The manager was hired to organize stuff. If the project fails, he will join another one. Success is not so supper-critical from him, it's more about the title on the business card, building up his business-network, ect.. it's all bout the career. Already explains why working with an owner is sooooo much different than working with a manager (again, not only related to music bizz)

  11. think it's more of an "audience attraction" then a cultural thing. on a 'mainstream' / popular genre its more likely to see all the showmanship folks, while on 'underground' you see all the "i give a shit" folks. a quote from chris rich that it fits very well on this: IMHO that attitude makes the difference - if you wanna become a superstar you are more likely to switch to the superstar-alter-ego on stage. If you don't care about being a superstar, you also don't need this alter ego.. you can play as you would do it in front of your two best friends
  12. I know what you mean, I also prefer the Vince LeBarde style (slight head shaking while playing monster-sound) vs the Tristan style (monster show while playing average-sound). But its nothing that disturbs me, I just don't look at the DJ if he is that ugly.. xD
  13. +11 I also thought the goa/psy scene is all about freedom and tolerance, not about complying to a set of rule someone defines for you.. someone complaining about that the DJ doesn't do what he is supposed to do when playing psy is kind of weird... turn around and look at the backdrop on the other side of the floor if you don't like the DJs face and your problem is solved. anyhow.. psy DJs are still quite "normal" if you compare to other genres XD

  16. The problem is just that the domain-name is a bit misleading. "Psy" for most ppl means modern Psytrance, the nano/peak/bsm/looney/wildthings/.... kind of sounds, but this forum (or better: a major part of the community) actually is more focused on goa trance. Open a thread about hallucinogen, astral projection, sun records & co and you will get spammed with feedback. Pretty sure that the number of posts from radi only on such a thread will outnumber the total amount of posts that have been written here about the names from above xD
  17. :like: gonna continue it The "liquid delay": Sample you favorite synthshot and reverse the sample. Now put a delay onto it (ping-pong works very well for this) and sample the result. Reverse the result again. Now you have a synthshot sample, with a delay on it, although the delay doesn't play a after, but before the shot. If you combine it with a delay on the original sample you get a flow-in-flow-out effect.. just try it This also works very well with reverb-fx, especially on voice samples.
  18. I would go for monitors first, simply because $$$ hardware synths are worth nothing if you can't hear what they're playing. If you use near field monitors well treated room isn't that important anymore. Afterwards go for a professional audio interface (on-board audio chips all suck big times)
  19. That's true, but I'm not talking about laying bricks. There are certain constants that are same for all tracks, e.g. post a track where there is crash on each 3. bar, instead of the 4.? Or where the buildup is 30,889 bars long instead of 32. Or where the snare drum plays 3/4 in between the kickdrums instead of on it. ect. If you create a track that just randomly plays something w/o any structure behind this is highly creative ofc, but probably not what the thread author is looking for. He is there already as of today. He is able to put his ideas into a DAW already, but what he lacks is the knowledge about how to build a track. So he is probably more interested to find out what those 99,9999% of the tracks have in common instead of the advance to be creative on stuff where everyone else sticks to a set of rules (for good reason)

  21. But than you don't get it finished^^ I know the problem of Pyrollusion very well - you have a nice idea, put it into your DAW and end up with a 16 bar loop. This is great for research or just experimenting, but if you wanna get a track finished you need some kind of structured approach.. at least until you finished a couple of tracks and know how it works. > So how do I get a feeling for that stuff? That's the whole point, for me it was like: WOOHOOO blasting killah loop, but needs a build up. So you start to compose the track backwards, which is considerably more difficult than in the other direction.. afterwards you start the next loop.. WOOHOOO blasting killah loop too.. but doesn't fit very well to first and.. oh wait, where I'm am? Is this supposed to be the climax? ... You get lost on the composition, or at least this was happening to me a lot of times when following the experimental approach. Wasn't a problem anymore after I switch order of first doing the structure work and than being creative, instead of being creative and than trying to bring some structure into it.
  22. the only thing you need to know when producing trance is 32 32beats (8bar) is your unit of measurement in tance, this where you usually change something. i.e. 1-8 kick 9-16 kick + bass 17-32 kick + bass + closed hihat 33-40 kick + bass + closed hihat + snare 41-48: kick + bass + closed hihat + snare + pad fades in ... at the end of each 32beats do a crash, or a drum roll or, .. That's all you need to know - create a bassline and a drumtrack and use the magic number to create a basic track structure, like 16bar into, 8 bar minibreak, 32bar buildup, 64bar climax, 32bar break, 32 bar buildup, 32 bar climax, 32 bar outro After you are done with that, safe it as template for your next track.. and now it's time to turn on the fancy synths and start to get creative, you won't get lost on the track anymore while fiddling with the synths.. because the structure is already done.
