Krell
Call me 3 to 5 albums which you would recommend a psynewcomer. I think for a psynewcomer it is good to recommend classics instead of worse fullon so i think this would be the best for a newcomer: Hallucinogen - Twisted Dragonfly records - Order Ordanata vol. 1 MFG - the prophecy MFG - New Kind of world UX - Ultimate experience I think this are really great albums for psynewbies 395828 (from an earlier topic - a bit more than a few albums, but look for my buying suggestions then its not so many) All right - This is PSY according to KRELL. (theres plenty of opinions out there, so this is just mine - Ive followed the music since 1994/95 - 1995 as a DJ&Organizer) The Psytrance Music can take you down 6 Main paths PSYCHEDELIC, MELODIC, FULL ON, TECH, PROGRESSIVE & CHILLOUT I will give you some recommendations, chronologicly for each path. The words "Goa Trance" and "Psychedelic Trance" can be used with everything in these 6 categories - They have ALL been encountered frequently at "goa style parties". PSYCHEDELIC (now also developed into more aggressive "Dark Psy" which crosses into Full On) 1995 KoxBox "Forever After" - Harthouse - http://www.discogs.com/release/932 1995 The Infinity Project " - TIP Records - http://www.discogs.com/release/36142 1999 Hux Flux "Cryptic Crunch" - Koyote Records - http://www.discogs.com/release/35086 1999 VA "Tales from the Forest" - Spirit Zone Recordings - http://www.discogs.com/release/85156 2001 VA "First Step" - Parvati Records - http://www.discogs.com/release/94902 -> I suggest you buy 2004 Grapes of Wrath & Meteloids "Tits On Fire" - Parvati Records - http://www.discogs.com/release/327214 MELODIC (this style often crosses into full on) 1996 Man With No Name(MWNN) "Moment of Truth" - Concept In Dance - http://www.discogs.com/release/81584 1996 Astral Projection "The Astral Files" - TIT/Phonokol - http://www.discogs.com/release/44980 1996 Transwave "Helium" - Matsuri Productions - http://www.discogs.com/release/141218 1997 Shakta "Silicon Trip" - Dragonfly Records - http://www.discogs.com/release/31692 1999 Infected Mushroom "The Gathering" - BNE - http://www.discogs.com/release/35821 -> I suggest you buy 2004 Vibe Tribe "Melodrama" - Utopia Records - http://www.discogs.com/release/355133 FULL ON (this style often crosses into melodic & psychedelic) 1998 Oforia "Delirious" - Dragonfly Records - http://www.discogs.com/release/451853 1999 VA "Psycho Tropic" - 3D Vision - http://www.discogs.com/release/123556 2001 Alien Project "Midnight Sun" - Phonokol - http://www.discogs.com/release/42868 2002 Astrix "Eye to Eye" - Hom-Mega Productions - http://www.discogs.com/release/66007 2003 Wrecked Machines "Blink" - Etnicanet - http://www.discogs.com/release/162539 -> I suggest you buy 2005 Wrecked Machines "Second Thought" - Spun - http://www.discogs.com/release/430285 TECH (this style often crosses into progressive, sometimes also full on) 1998 Montauk P "Def=Lim" - Blue Room Released - http://www.discogs.com/release/68914 2000 Spirallianz "Blast Food" Spirit Zone Recordings - http://www.discogs.com/release/31749 2001 Midi Miliz "Antistat" - d.Drum - http://www.discogs.com/release/17240 2002 X-Dream "Irritant" - d.Drum - http://www.discogs.com/release/71405 2002 VA "Chronika Chapter One" - Boshke Beats Records - http://www.discogs.com/release/51242 -> I suggest you buy 2000 Spirallianz "Blast Food" Spirit Zone Recordings - http://www.discogs.com/release/31749 PROGRESSIVE (this style crossed into full on, tech, house & melodic) 1997 VA "Technobotanic Tryptamines" - Nephilim Records - http://www.discogs.com/release/356404 1999 VA "Tabernanthe" - Iboga Records" - http://www.discogs.com/release/185529 2000 VA "Pieces Increse" Digital Structures - http://www.discogs.com/release/179396 2001 Ticon "Rewind" - Digital Structures - http://www.discogs.com/release/54462 2001 Necton "B12 Cocktail" Spirit Zone Recordings - http://www.discogs.com/release/31734 -> I suggest you buy 2003 Vibrasphere "Lime Structure" - Digital Structures - http://www.discogs.com/release/107404 CHILLOUT (this style is basicly everything slow and chilled, dub, ambient, breakbeat - whatever, but with a twist) 1996 The Infinity Project "Mystical Experiences" - Fairway - http://www.discogs.com/release/256240 1996 Total Eclipse "Violent Relaxation 2XCD" - Blue Room Released - http://www.discogs.com/release/93508 1998 VA "More Signs of Life" - Blue Room Released - http://www.discogs.com/release/37887 1998 VA "Eclipse - A Journey Of Permanence & Impermanence" - Twisted Records - http://www.discogs.com/release/77537 1998 Celtic Cross - "Hicksville" - Liquid Sound Design/Nova Tekk - http://www.discogs.com/release/43913 -> I suggest you buy 2004 H.U.V.A. Network "Distances" - Ultimae Records - http://www.discogs.com/release/235694 I choose to mention earlier releases rather than new releases... However, I also recommend 1 CD in particular in each genre in order to get a good impression of where the music is now (I like all the releases mentioned though). There are SO many new releases within each genre - and, I tried to mention some of the ones who have been important to me and many others during the years... Basicly, I try to mention the FIRST one I feel arrived in each genre (from the top of my head) - and then I mention some of the releases I find noteworthy which follow in the pioneering releases slipstream. Also, last - I would like to encourage you to watch the Son Kite Live in Tokyo DVD - It, for me, creates a very strong backdrop for their live set - Its very dreamy, and I fellt sort of more visually directed in the journey thru their set... http://www.psyshop.com/shop/DVDs/dig/dig1dv001.html I think, if you get to hear all of these releases + buy the ones I mention + watch the Son Kite DVD - You will have a good impression of what Psy is about, and you will be on your way to building up your own collection of musical gems More DVDs here http://www.psyshop.com/shop/DVDs/ Best wishes Krell

moni
well, he's allright. i only talk about topics i choose to discuss. hallucinogen is not such an interesting topic to me. but hey, if you want me to talk Hallucinogen, i'll make an effort, listen to his stuff again, and then we'll talk. if i remember well, i wasn't impressed by Hallucinogen In Dub when it was released. my psy-musical taste has increased comparing to 3-4 years ago, so maybe i should give it another shot. anyway, this thread is not about Hallucinogen, so please ... *minds her own bussines*
pr0fane
I have actually converted a few "non-believers" with these albums. Not the most psychedelic albums out there, but as an introduction to the psychedelic scene, these are some of the albums I consider with the biggest mass-appeal - without lacking quality: Vibrasphere - Lime Structure Andromeda - Temptations Son Kite - Colours Jaïa - Fiction Protoculture - Refractions I could imagine these would also work well (but haven't tested on any non-psy'ers yet): Ticon - Aero Ticon - Zero Six After FREq - Strange Attractors Astrix - Eye To Eye 12 Moons - Solid State Human Blue - Electric Roundabout

pr0fane
his 2nd album is like 1000 times better why u recomend this crap 395955 His first album is undoubtedly one of the most important full on albums ever made. I'm not saying it's the first or necessarily the best full on release - it just had a huge impact on the scene, and after that, Astrix's formula became the one everyone followed. If you like it or not is a matter of taste really - I personally consider it one of my favourite full on releases, and miles beyond "Artcore", which, to my taste, was way too aggressive and focused on being killar, and with less focus on the moods and atmosphere. The more laidback dancefloor tracks from "Eye To Eye" like "Side Effect", "Crystal Sequence" and especially "Valirus" are very deep and dreamy in my opinion. pr0fane
sorry but we talk about psychedelic, not about polyphonic midi with psychedelic melodies (=astrix) 395964 Look, I already wrote that they weren't among the most psychedelic albums out there, but you asked for recommendations for "newbies" to the psytrance scene, and I mentioned some albums with quality, but also with quite wide mass-appeal. Oh yeah, I also like psytrance/goa from before 1997, but I would for instance hardly consider UX's "Ultimate Experience" a newbie-friendly release. One step at a time
