  1. Not enough love for Psy Phy 6, Ju Ju Space Jazz and Star Sounds Orchestra imho.
  2. Some overlooked ones: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CbYWcLvJ01o
  3. I've always liked Har-El. He makes slower and/or more hypnotic tracks than the average Israeli Goa artist, with a lot of influence from new beat/industrial/synthpop that strokes my proto receptors in the right ways. Adrenaline Drum - Heartbeat, Har-El - Interzone 2000, Cali Sunshine - Tokyo Underground, Cali Sunshine - Black Moon remix are particular favorites. I don't know his religious or political views, and I suspect that's for the best.
  4. I read it, both editions, though Reynolds' casual racism (assertions like blacks are into rhythmically complex music, while whites prefer melody and harmony) always kept me from fully enjoying the book. And I'm really not down with the erasing of people of color from the Goa trance scene. Also, he comes from a background of punk rock, and carries from it a strong bias against psychedelia and prog. He mellowed a little bit in the newer edition but you can still see it in fr'ex his writing on FSOL and other ambient techno artists. I agree, Reynolds did a ton of legwork and the book's full of useful documentation of the EDM culture. You just have to keep in mind that it's a very biased report, heavily slanted towards the author's musical preferences and cultural attitudes (something he himself admits) rather than a comprehensive document.
  5. MTV in the US had an 'electronica' show for a couple of years called AMP, with these and other videos. It had its following, and even spawned a compilation cd or two in its day. Also goa would play as interstitial/commercial music for some shows; I remember hearing Rock Bitch in an ad for Celebrity Deathmatch (!) a long time ago. AMP would only run at ungodly hours though, so your odds of having seen it are slim, unless you were allowed to stay up til 2AM when you were 11
  6. Rhythmystec - Plasmatik EP Prana - Cyclone Transwave - Helium Witchcraft - Magic Frequencies EP Prana - Geomantik VA - Resonance Mood Sandman - Witchcraft Ju Ju Space Jazz - Shloop VA - Forever Psychedelic Ubar Tmar - True

  9. Apitchatpong Weerasethakul. Truly unique and uncanny films. I've seen his Mysterious Object At Noon, Blissfully Yours, Tropical Malady, Syndromes And A Century, and Uncle Boonmee Who Can Remember His Past Lives... all great.
  10. I enjoy the dense layering of old Goa; it doesn't all have to be hyper-melodic victory trance, though. Some of the old stuff was almost like drone music in the way that the synths were deployed, very harmonic and rhythmic as opposed to melodic. I miss that kind of sound. Also, I like what Chi A.D. had to say back in 1998 when Goa was moving away from being, well, Goa. Paraphrasing from memory: "If you look at house, techno, drum and bass, no change. Yet we are told for some reason that Goa trance is stale and needs to change. Musical genres don't die because there is always a new supply of people to listen to them, which is why people still dance to Strauss waltzes. It isn't the music that needs to change, but the presentation and the marketing."
  11. I'll just point out that techno -- real techno, not the psytekk sound -- is quite polyrhythmic and musically interesting. It's only within the psytrance scene that "techno" means "a hard kick, bassline, and a few noises". The psytrance and techno scenes never understood the essential appeal of each other... trance is the rock of dance music, techno is the jazz of dance music. For me, house, techno, and breaks are OK to dance to for a little while, but I need more intense sounds to let myself go on the dancefloor. Goa and EBM are what really do it for me in a dance setting. And I'm going to a Goa party in a couple of weeks. ^^ https://www.facebook.com/events/143084919220280/
  12. The Ridge Racer games had some nice techno: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpFgy9dbwqQ For true psychedelic weirdness look up a game called "LSD Dream Emulator".
  13. I'm definitely neuro-atypical. Whether that means having a mental disorder or just being an introvert with a vivid imagination is a totally subjective line, and I wouldn't begin to presume to draw it. The inside of my mind is one big zuppa inglese though, and with a little encouragement shows just how weird it is. To wit: I've had one of these: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CuteMonsterGirl taking up residence since 2004. Not from any anime or specific media, just an original creation of mine. She showed up one night while I was listening to music and... just sort of announced her presence... and ever since I've had a co-pilot.
  14. Other: Spectral They weren't a prolific group, compared to others, but every track was on a level of its own. Warm, positive, and complex.
  15. He only served three months, according to this: http://news.brisbanetimes.com.au/world/aussie-dj-released-from-bali-jail-20070920-zyd.html reger: the artist you're thinking of is Planet B.E.N. Someone else I'd like to see return to goa trance!
  16. For me, it's necessary to recapture the feeling. When I started listening to psytrance I had just a handful of CDs, some of which I had to special order as they weren't carried in shops. The Internet was also new and not yet available in my house, so I had to leave home and go to a record store, magazine store, or a place with computer demos just to do any research on what music was out there. Everything I could get my hands on was so new and amazing, completely alien music. Now that I have a huge collection and limitless music to listen to on the Internet, I find my passion dwindling, so I have to leave psytrance every so often just to remember what it felt like getting into it. Ozric Tentacles and FSOL are my favorite acts, and the ones I return to the most psy or non psy. I've also been listening to a lot of proto-trance this past couple of years, and that can be amazing, so much unique music! I feel like I'm digging up buried treasure when I find a really old track that has Goa sounds in it.
  17. We had a kind of psy-cafe in Los Angeles for many years: http://novaexpresscafe.com Not exclusively psytrance, but the local psytrance scene would gather there after parties, and sometimes they would DJ there too. Other nights you'd hear electro clash, psy rock bands, a whole mix. It was a trippy looking place, with its retro science fiction/alien theme. Their pizza was good and I remember their 15 foot Cthulu fondly
  18. Playful Goa is where it's at, maaan. Try Spirit Level, Space Dimension, Squid/Cephalopod, Streamer, Outer Active, Denshi-Danshi, Joking Sphinx, Cwithe, Polyploid, Psy Phy 6, Ololiuqui, Blacklight, Drop & Dash, 33rd Rate Revolutionaries, Blue Food, Chamar, Psyko Disko, Brainman, most releases on Aquatec... Old Synchro (first album and everything prior) is great fun too. Most of these fall on the acidic side but it sounds like you're not averse to a bit of 303 action. If you want a sample you can listen to some of my favorite fun Goa in my Global Goa Party 2 mix.
  19. There is an all-female psytrance collective: facebook dot com slash PsySisters Seems to be London based.
  20. Ouch. I really sympathize; unless you're a natural extrovert and/or incredibly good at acting, getting past HR and the interview process is the hardest part of any job search. Only once did I do well on an interview and it was a very informal situation, more like sitting down and talking to a friend. I'm unemployed. I have a 2 year degree from a community college and I spent another year at a university before dropping out due to various issues (money, emotional/mental stress). I've done clerical work in the past, going to different law offices and updating/helping maintain their libraries, and I'm trying to get a job doing that again for a while. Other than that, food and cooking is a big interest of mine, and if I can save up enough capital for it I'd like to start a cafe and tea room.
  21. Goa: Juno Reactor - Beyond The Infinite. It was the 1st album I listened to (so nostalgia plays a role) and also the most 'complete'. Psytrance: difficult to say, but I'm gonna go with MOS - Bug.
  22. Maybe against the rules, but: Koxbox and Jens - Jungle Walla
  23. I'm very happy to hear that, hardly anyone knows about that remix and it's a long time favorite of mine. The 'warm' sound you describe is largely a 1993-94 phenomenon; it's the early stage of British psy-trance, when it was psychedelic but not yet 'full on'. You could try the first two albums of Eat Static: Abduction and Implant, if you haven't yet. Also the remixes of Alien Sex Fiend - Inferno. Astralasia has some good tracks as well. If you're open to reccs outside of psy-trance, check out some progressive house from that time like old Underworld, Sabres Of Paradise, Secret Knowledge, Aloof. Not the goa sound but warm, deep, and hypnotic. Depending on what you're looking for you might like that just as much or better.
