Well obviously I love great (not good mate great is what you need if you don't settle for second best) music and great DJ skills and to be honest that is what I usually get at events I pay for. Thinking of the free local nights though I can't expect world reknowned DJ skills but fantastic tracks is often on the menu

I don't beat-match when I play ambient Of course good mixing skills is desireable however I'll still take good tunes & weak mixing over great mixing of shit tunes anyday

You must not know much about the history of the DJ then. Beat-matching is relatively new and in the old parties in the 60's and 70's a DJ would often just let one track finish before putting on another

It's not that it has to be on a physical CD, there is something else to it. It's the same with movies, if I rent it from the video shop then I have a time limit on when I have to watch it, if I buy it I have to watch it because I paid money for it. If I download it it will just sit on my hard drive as I have no motivation to watch it. With music though it is even worse, as I have so much that I have paid for, free music just doesn't get the number of listens as the music I bought. The other week I downloaded some stuff of Ektoplasm and I haven't even unzipped it yet

Maybe he thinks people will buy it because they like it, even though they now already "have" it. I agree that it is a very risky sales teachnique but while it could hurt CD sales it could seriously boost the number of people wanting to go to his gigs and I am sure the most money comes from the gigs nowadays. I'm going to wait until I get the CD before listening to it as I generally don't connect with anything I download

What I got from Afgin's post is that he likes Euro Trance with vocals in it and that's why he makes it. Perfectly reasonable. We may be disappointed because we don't like the style but I still think that artists should make the kind of music that they want to make. Don't underestimate the value of "vibes"
