  2. Artist: Radioactive Sandwich Title: B-Sides Vol. 1 Label: Self Released Date: March, 2012 1. Facebreaker 2. Falling Down 3. Make It Clap 4. Jabberwockey 5. Flying Guillotine 6. Resolution 7. The Wall 8. No Sound 9. Tundra 10. Sun In The Sea "I'm an American...you're a sick asshole!" Take that metric system! When I don't know what to write I go get a sandwich. My favorite is a radioactive one. These two are a better version of the Chemical Brothers. Big beats, moody vocals, and not afraid to use the latest trends in music. This is a collection of stuff they made before 2012 that never made it onto an album. Some of them sound like sketches and are pretty short. So what do you do with it? B-sides baby! You cannot pigeon hole these guys cause just when you're comfortable they turn the tables on you. It's electronic creativity at its finest that jumps genres and treats tempos as a suggestion. Check out this lyric: "You're f*cking ugly and I hate you. I wish you would just go and die...in a fire." Wedding vows...they ain't what they used to be. This was offered for whatever you thought it was worth awhile ago, but now that's over. They've given away a lot on Ektoplazm in the past so now it's time to throw a few scheckles their way. So for less than 4 bucks you can have some great stuff in your inbox. When you need to take a break from psytrance, but still want to keep it psychedelic check this out. B-sides...Maybe. If the b stands for bad-ass. Radioactive Sandwich Bandcamp Mdk
  3. Artist: Lauge & Baba Gnohm Title: Daybreak EP Label: Soundmute Recordings Date: March, 2014 01 - Memories (80 BPM) 02 - Southern Hemisphere (80 BPM) 03 - Daybreak (feat. Mikkel Govertz) (80 BPM) I wrote this review back in March so excuse the hell out of me if it's a little dated. Seriously. What. The. F*ck. Where's the motherf*ckin' grass! Freezing my cottontail off! The calendar says Spring, but Mother Nature continues to give us the finger and thinks we need some more winter. Punxsutawney Phil has long been drawn and quartered as the sky dumps another deluge of cold, white powder. My wife hates the stuff, but I love it. It's quiet. Peaceful. Pure. This just came up on Ektoplazm and I'm sure glad it did. The Danish downtempo super duo is known for dreamy atmospheres and slow beats. The first release from them is no exception. Originally out in 2009 this can be warm or cold, but it is always pensive and guides you donw melancholy memory lane. Memories is like a fresh rain for a new starting point. Southern Hemisphere's slow groove puts the listener on a journey across space where a lonely astronaut strums an acoustic guitar. The final track Daybreak is a prog rock dreamscape with delicate piano twinkling amidst analog synths. What a great ep. Smooth, beautiful, dreamy downtempo with character. Thumbs way up gentlemen! 4. Artist: TRD Title: Apostles of the Universe EP Label: Chaitra Records Date: February, 2014 01 - Forgotten Paths (115 BPM) 02 - Apostles Of the Universe (140 BPM) 03 - Redeem (140 BPM) 04 - Resurrect (115/145 BPM) 05 - Spiritualization (140 BPM) 06 - Cotton Haze (80 BPM) Where is the f*cking toilet? I listen to a f*ckton of music. Absolute f*ckton. Everyday. Whenever I can. While I'm making dinner or dropping some kids off at the pool, my headphones are never out of reach. I've been reviewing albums for a long time so does that mean I've gotten better at distinguishing the wheat from the chaff? I'll leave that up to you, but if you do something long enough you should eventually get rather proficient at it. Don't know a thing about brain surgery, but give me a decade of daily study and I'll have you drooling in no time. But what if you nailed it on your first try? No med school, no residency, you just picked up a scalpel and signed your name on somebody's medulla oblongata? Yep that's some ol Doogie Howser sh*t right there. Legen...wait for it...dary. Well that's what this kid did. And yes I called him a kid cause at 21 years of age that's what you are to me. The debut from Swede Par Carlsson (extra s added for "superb") is lush with melodic layers and bursting with atmosphere. It's crystal clear sound is your guide for a trip through the galaxy. His breaks are deep and rich and keep the tracks fresh and vibrant while his use of percussion makes it stand out. Robotic voices and a cold feel drive home the theme that you are about to go where no man has gone before. Beautiful. Electronic. Music. Normally I'd avoid anything with a morning label on it because it just ain't my bag baby. But this is a must hear. We got ourselves a prodigy and the doctor is definitely in. Colin Oood on the master again and he did a bang up job. Give him a shout he might hook you up with the penis lengthening thing you wanted. It'll keep the girls from pointing at your junk and laughing. Free at Ektoplazm Mdk
  5. Artist: Flowertz Title: Avocado EP Label: Ektoplazm Date: March, 2014 1. Avocado 2. FreeForm 3. Psychedelic Dance I don't like avocados. They have a very rich green color and look like they should taste sweet like a fruit. But they don't. F*ck you Subway it's not a super food. It's a super villain food. I even came up with a cool super villain name. The Chameleon. This three track EP is from Italian Gianpiero Fiorelli (like I needed to tell you he was Italian) and it's got some strong bas and head nodding goodness. There are plenty of sounds to enjoy, but it's a little light on evolution. The last track Psychedelic Dance is more of a mid-tempo piece, but it also suffers from the same pitfall. Pretty good EP, but nothing extraordinary. The mastering was done by Colin Oood giving it a rich, warm quality. Still don't like avocados though. Free at Ektoplazm Mdk

    Astropilot-Iriy

Artist: Astropilot Album: Iriy Label: Altar Records Genre: Progressive Psy-chill, Psy-chill, Downtempo, Ambiant 1.Gamayun – 11:35 2.The last nigth of Svarog – 11:29 3.Svarog's Morning – 9:27 4.Rod – 9:31 5.Makosh – 7:19 6.Svar-ga – 8:27 7.Veda (feat. Mikrokosmos) – 10:16 8.Back to Midgard-Earth – 12:56 Each time that I listen to a new Astropilot album, I always have the same reaction: ''Cheezzz … I did not know that he could create this kind of music.'' Album after album, Astropilot offers new unexpected ambiance in completely different universes. For me, he is one of the most diversified and original psychill artists. It is really hard to define Astropilot's genre. Offering a collection of tracks in which we find much space, and ambiance as deep shamanic trance tunes, not to mention a whole bunch of progressive and fast 4/4 kick structure tracks. Each album allows us to see a new surprising face from this artist. With ''Iriy'', it is in a deep trance adventure that we are invited. Each track proposes profound bass lines and groovy 4/4 kicks. It is dancy, but so floaty at the same time. Really intense, but smoochy on the other hand. The sound and the bass hits you in the chest while the shining melody opens your mouth and shows your teeth; a continuous presence of background choir, thus giving a heavenly feeling while keeping moving vibration. Overhall, each track proposes complex progressive structure that develops surprinsingly. As a dj, this album is becoming one of my masterpieces when I mix a deep trance set. Follow Iriy and enter in the dance with your heart opened and your eyes closed! ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: – Gamayun – ''Gamayun'' opens the album really well. Three minutes of etherical and spacy introduction, offered within deep seated vibration. Slowly, the kick shows its nose in natural continuity with the begining. At six minutes everything begins … 4/4 beat structure, smooth background of airy voices and simple melody … beautiful progression. – The Last Night of Svarog – In an intimate ambiance, a track that develops in a pure simplicity. Everything moves, progresses, changes, but at the same time still in the same universe. A surprising deep track that brings you close to the dream. – Svarog's Morning – If the last tune prepared the listener to visit Morpheus, ''Svarog's Morning'' unfolds the daylight. Crystalline sounds intertwined with etherical and shining melody that has chapters of variety and flows well from segment to segment with good development. – Rod -- ''Rod'' is a hypnotical track that develops slowly a gentle melody. In the middle, a crash … everything collapses, to rebirth from the ashes. Heavenly choir accompagnies the journey of the simple but efficient notes. – Makosh – Such a beautiful track... No kick, no dancefloor. Beautiful introdution that recalls the crystaline universe of Icelandic musicians Bjork in her ''Vespertine'' period, Sigur Ros or even Jonsi. Soft bass line appears, you close your eyes and let yourself go in this introspective starlit universe. – Svar-ga – Celestial chants, sparkling sounds, rolling double kick… there we go! Complex tune with multi-layered spectra of warm bass and kick, micro-melodies and tonal motifs enveloped by organic rhythms and divine choir. The best track of the album. – Veda – This track compliments the album's cohesive feel. Less dancy, but still really grounded in a warm bass spectrum. This tune develops unexpected chapters of melody, bringing delicate lines of organic instruments with shining electronic texture. – Back to Midgard – The last track, the last moment to dance. ''Back to Midgard'' surrounds the listener in a deep groovy double kick intertwined with heavenly textures. It is a non-stop building of harmonic soundcape that brings the dance floor in a beautiful daydreaming! 7. Artist: CoaGoa Title: Transcendental Consciousness EP Label: Timewarp Records Date: July, 2014 1. Everything Is Conscious 2. Transcendental Consciousness (Tribute to Nova Fractal) 3. Frozen Love "If you have a golf ball sized consciousness, when you read a book you'll have a golf ball sized understanding. When you look out a golf ball sized awareness. And when you wake up in the morning a golf ball sized wakefullness." Not to mention a sh*tload of golf balls. Coagoa is Alexandar Popovic and this is his debut ep. The first track is smooth and subtle. The title track is more aggressive yet equally layered. Very tasty. The last track...hmmm. For those of you who doubt that inspiration could come from a visit to a sperm back I give you...Frozen Love! That title brings to mind hair metal power ballads and the mother daughter teams that throw their panties on stage. Cheesy right? And make no mistake the cheesy title is followed by cheesy and cliched downtempo music. Aside from the last track this is a fairly good ep. The goa is multi layered warmth, floating and melodic. It sounds great thanks to the production as well as the mastering by Deimos. These days it's not enough to just make goa trance. You have to also be quite a good artist in other aspects which Alexandar did with he being the one behind the attractive cover art. Beatport Mdk

  14. Artist: Carbon Title: Dream EP Label: UAF Date: February, 2014 01 - Shangri-La (142 BPM) 02 - Bergamot (143 BPM) 03 - Jupiter (Green Elf Mix) (149 BPM) 04 - Dream (100 BPM) Longtime Psynews memberand festival leggings wearer Imba is back with a release on his Underground Alien Factory label. Carbon is from Slovakia (a psytrance/goa artist from the Balkans? Stop me if you've heard that one.) and he delivers something pretty nice. Shangri La has lots of evolution with some bubbling and intense fury. The layers are nice and this sounds very raw. Bergamot is old school gritty with popping 303 sounds. Another track that makes a sharp directional turn. Well put together. Jupiter was very spacey, but not my favorite. He closes things out with the downtempo Dream. Homie put a bluesy saxaphone in there! Not afraid to travel the untrod path I see. I think I like the variation and changes in direction the most. The tracks are fast and bring the power with very nice layering. Free at Ektoplazm Mdk

But I think we can all agree sometimes you're just stupid. In that vein I suppose I owe this project an apology. Two Israeli brothers making psytrance? Stop me if you've heard that one before. Paid them zero attention. Why do I wanna waste my time with cheesy full on? That horse has been beaten to death. I haven't been this wrong since, well... F*ck I just turned my kids room into a gay disco! And it's still too damn hot in here! Now I haven't heard the first album from these guys, but their second one is something you should be paying more attention to. It was a gift from the label Zion604 when I ordered their latest release. No cover, no case, just the music burned to a disc. Normally that would find itself buried amidst all the other music that I would probably never get around to. But something told me to give it a go. Good call. The first disc is psytrance oriented with midtempo rhythms and an eye for detail. Changes of direction are abundant as are the hopscotching of between genres. And I believe that to be their strength. The similarities to old Infected Mushroom are many and while none of these tracks are blasters they are fun to dive into with lots of evolution. Their brand of psytrance is nothing special (aside from a few tracks the first disc is rather weak), but throw in their penchant for variety and things get more interesting. Disc two is the prize for me, full of downtempo grooves that combine vastly varied rhythms in a detailed menagerie of sounds. The layers are thick with slow, cinematic thumping beats that don't flirt with goa, but engage in a full blown dry humping session on the new family couch. You're doing it wrong. Hump first then eat. Thick with changes in direction , it's like getting lost in a maze where treasure is around every corner. The who shebang is produced very well with all sounds being crystal clear. They seem to love long tracks and while that can be involving sometimes it feels as if they're lost in the woods and every tree looks the same. "No you go on ahead. I'm gonna...take a look at...something." *sound of fly unzipping* So the psytrance yeah it's all right, but the downtempo disc is really good. Thanks for the gift! Psyshop Beatspace Mdk

Spacedrifters - Reverse (Vocal Version) 5. Orion Vs. Alien Project - Cryptic Aliens 6. Earthling - Kilamanjaro 7. Earthling Vs. Alien Project - Fantasy Island 8. Etnica - Trip Tonite (Playa Mix) 9. Alien Project Vs. Astrix - Crystal Skulls (Long Version) 10. Logic Bomb - Normalised I'm gonna go on record here and say this was one of the best things Ari Linker (Alien Project) was involved with. Smooth downtempo tracks with laid back grooves. Earthling or Alien Project are on most of the tracks which are full of deep bass. Some of the beats are grimy, but they all have a floaty feeling. The samples speak of alien landings and government coverups. Unlike other downtempo comps this one ends with two upbeat numbers heavy on the psychedelia. To be honest it's kind of dark with melodies that can make you think about past decisions. The only one I didn't care for was Kilimanjaro which broke the flow of the album. Otherwise this is really good stuff. Mdk

  21. Artist: Sound Strider Title: Intrepid Travels EP Label: La Briche Records Date: February, 2014 01 - The Stakes (115 BPM) 02 - Menlo Park (115 BPM) 03 - Childhoods End (115 BPM) 04 - Limit (130 BPM) 05 - Betoniere (105 BPM) Gritty beats, juicy bass, and samples aplenty is what you get here. Throw in some turntablism and the recipe for nasty in a good way is there. Sometimes the percussion is off beat on purpose which is kinda cool. I feel they do themselves a disservice though with the extended length of their tracks at this slow bpm. What's that? They're not that long? So why the f*ck did it feel like I was running through pudding? Childhood Dream sounded like a slow depressive spiral where they were just f*cking with their machines. Betoniere was random messing about to my ears. The whole thing didn't have enough variation to fill the space. It's an...interesting break from the everyday I would say... In May... On a stack of hay... If you're...gay? *phone rings* "Hello? You're with who? Ah, human resources. Yes, I understand, I'll...I'll be right up" Damn, that's the third time this week. Dick Stuff (128) 03 - Plus Or Minus (67.5/135) 04 - OneHundreds (80/160) What is the fascination with project names that sound like a man's junk? Schlang is one vowel away from being known as the private parts of a man. And to title your EP Little Information Deposits suggest that you and your tiny junk have a leaking problem. Maybe Schlang is German for Itchy Weiner. Meh, maybe it's only my juvenile mind. I say itchy cause this sh*t is glitchy with heavily manipulated samples. There are elements of techno, electro, and dub all over break beats. Some of it is well done, but there are a LOT of samples. Too many I would say and the long tracks can make the listener weary. Frequent changes can be good, but there wasn't any phrase or part in any of the tracks which I could grab on to. And if you don't grab me right away then I'll be happy to introduce you to one of my closest friends. "Hi there, have you had the pleasure of meeting my dear friend the delete button?"
