Massive is a fine synth and especially good for psy, I use it all the time, but it doesn't do FM. I downloaded the demo, and it indeed sounds very tasty, that mid-00's full-on signature sound which I love. No other my synth sounds exactly like it, I think I'll grab it while it's on sale. The GUI is kinda confusing though, It seems that they compromised usability for the sake of following the workflow of the hardware prototype. It took me quite a while to figure out how to assign LFO to pitch and cutoff, and once I enabled the unison I failed to find how to disable it.

It's on sale right now. Afaik, it is modelled after the iconic Nordlead, I've checked some soundbank demos labelled as psytrance, they sound very authentic, all these squelches, FM leads, risers - very delicious sound. But on the other hand, I already have some fine synths, icluding Massive, Spire, Sylenth, not sure if I need another one.

I already saw this "psytrance in its entirety" thread - it helped me to understand what is psycore, what is darkpsy and what is forest psy (I don't like ether of them but at least now I know that they all are different ) and it also has lots of cool graphics I will investigate this thread further.

Interesting... Things are even more complicated now It seems that people are categorizing music according to the elements which are most important for them personally (song structure, degree of psychedelity - does such a word exist? - etc). I for one love melodies and lush spacey sound (like Digicult, Protoculture etc), and I used to divide all psytrance into "melodic psy" and "night/dark psy", untill I learned that "night psy" and "dark psy" are not the same thing and darkpsy is not exactly dark. Actually, the question first arose when I saw one of my own tracks, which I had categorized as "full-on", tagged somewhere as "progressive". This track is full-on according to me (145 bpm, rolling bassline) and accoridng to Padmapani (goes from climax to climax instead of slowly progressing), and progressive accoridng to Ormion (has lots of normal trance elements, a cheesy melody, supersaws etc). Well, probably with the exception of the genre-defining acts or paint-by-number music, all these tags and subgenres don't make much sence.

"Ksolntsu" means "towards the sun". Actually, it should be "tanets sveta" and "k solntsu" if transliterated according to the rules, no surprise google translator fails. "Da budet" is "let there be", "Na ve ka" - "for ages" (supposedly), "aura leta" - "the aura of summer", "Bezdne Vselennoy" - "for the abyss of the universe", "Iskry Sveteal" - "sparks of light" (supposedly). "Gde Nivy Shchebechut" - "where the the fields are chirping" (some of these titles are transliterated really weird). Psykovsky is a portmanteau of "psy" and "Tchaikovsky", but this should be self-evident

In case someone is curious, Tanetsveta means "the dance of light" in Russian.

But the music like Intersys, Eletcro Sun, Perplex etc (145 bpm trance with corny vocals and happy melodies), is not "psyprog" but rather belongs to full-on, right? (though I'm not sure if it belongs to psytrance at all). Sorry for being so anal about the terms, I'm trying to wrap my head aroung all these subgenres - there are tons of new releases, I need to know how and where I could potentially find the music I may like.

This is twillight psy? Would never think that, I had the impression that "twillight" means something much more agressive and twisted and much less melodious. Actually, I quite liked this set (but for the overall sameness and some corny vocal samples). Well, I have to admit that I'm totally confused about psy subgenres.

Thanks for the explanations! So, the second defition is more appropriate - "psyprog" is not exactly related to bpm or the type of the bassline, but rather reflects the use of some elements of club-friendly dance music and reduced "psychedelity".

Curious, what does "progressive psy" mean. I've basically heard two different definitions of this term 1. Anything 4 on the floor below 140 bpm (typically around 134-137), with "groovy" basslines (as opposed to "running" full-on bassline). May be mellow or harsh, euphoric or dark, melodic or relying solely on grooves and effects 2. A kind of psy which incorporates lots of "normal trance" and/or deep house elements, aerial and euphoric or at least not very dark, usually more or less melodic and, generally speaking, accessible to non-psy people, the bpm doesnt matter. Which one seems to be more correct? In other words, this is undoubtedly "progressive psy", isn't it? And what about this? The last two examples are, at least, faster than 140 (142-145 I think), and have a "full-onish" kind of bassline, but are distinctively melodious and not very harsh or twisted. Also, are "progressive psytrance" and "psyprog" the same thing, or there are some further subtleties here?

They both are "Kindzadza". Btw, the Kin-dza-dza film was not just a "weird futuristic movie", it had and sill has enormously huge cultural impact on Russian people. Also the aesthetic of this movie is strangely similar to the overall feel of the Kindzadza music, so this is a really clever name choice.

This reminds me on Talamasca's "Psychedelic trance" album - pop/dance music containing a tiny bit of "psy-like" elements. I actually can imagine myself listening to it while driving a car or doing some shit that that requires a rhytimic background. Sill, I've heard much worse songs, just don't call it psy and everything should be OK

Indeed, Iono always sounds like Iono and Tesseract always sounds like Tesseract, this may be good or bad thing depending on what you are after. Some of my all time favourite prog records are from Iono, but they usually have one or two killer tracks per 10 track compilation, where the rest of the stuff sounds like insanely long inro/outro to these awesome moments. As for Tesseract, I was pretty excited when I discovered Nerso, Flegma, Vertex and the other guys (I love this kind of melodic aerial psy) but having listened to more their works I quickly got dissapointed because I'm not sure if they can themselves tell one their track from another . Relativ and the first album by Lyctum are the standouts for me (the Lyctum's second is meh though), also Talpa/The Riddler is something different but not my thing. Btw, why does everyone hate Neelix? I know only one their track (Smoke and Mirrors), it's nothing outstanding but, imo, is no worse than a typical "Ionish" track.

releasing tons of stuff daily, most of which sounds the same and quite boring, imo. Psyprog seems to be the easiest psy to make, from the technical point of view, and therefore many psyprog acts do their stuff just because they can, without putting any emotion into their music. That's not me hating the whole subgenre (I actually love psyprog when it is really well made, like some stuff N.O.K., Static Movement & Impact, Andromeda, Relativ and many, many more), but I'm kinda tired to go through the new releases just to find out the same stabs and squelches over the same monotonous beats

Yes, Cybernetica's track is really good, but at least some others are also more than decent. Seems that most tracks are on darker side of psy though, which is not my cup of tea, but at least the production quality is really high. Btw, didn't I make a mistake by submitting an unmastered track? Mine is much quieter than the others, is feels like most of the tracks here at least have been processed with a limiter or something to boost up the sound, this may influence the listeners.

Done. I've posted an unmastered track with empty master channel, if anything I also have a file processed with ozone plugin, not sure it sounds better, but definitely louder

I have a psytrance track which is almost finished, I only need to adjust some levels and maybe do some equing. But I'm nobody in psy scene and seeing who is also participating I'm afraid even to try. Here are some of my finished psytrance tracks, what do you think? Is it even passable?

This is my experience as well. Tried Dune2, Spire, Zebra but always come back to Sylenth.

I'm an ex normal trance listener and I do like melodic psy. I don't mind some uplifting cliches like supersaws, plucks, big arpeggiated melodies and the like, if used tastefully these things may work quite well in psy context. What I dislike is this happy laidback vibe which is dominating modern trance scene (and was one of the main reasons why I've mostly stopped listening to it) and is crawling into psy. Some of the tracks you've posted suffer from just this, the tracks by Orkidea and Ghost Rider sound like generic trance with psy basslines. I absolutely don't mind positive, euphoric mood in psytrance, but psy may not sound, well "mundane" (for the lack of better word). Well, if people are promoting their music here, why shouldn't I I absolutely don't pretend these tracks to be anything special, just my vision of blending psytrance with uplifting elements.

I agree that the album lacks consistency and some tracks are just unnecessary, like Freaky Alien or The Visions Begin, but the overall impression is very good. What Is Reality is my personal fav.
