Compilation: Deep Mental Trauma: The first Gram Label: Nabi Records Web: http://www.nabi-records.com/ CAT: NABICD004 Sonic-energy: http://www.sonic-energy.net/core/content/view/206/2/ 01.Catatonic Despair - Skin & Salt [148] 02.Baphomet Engine - Antas Acoc Sod Sergalim [150] 03.Celsung - Tri Assasin Dont Die [147] 04.Celsung - Broken Butterfly [149] 05.Strezz - Lyserg Saeure Diaethylamid [148] 06.Catatonic Despair - Flicker [148] 07.Noise Gust - Summon Spell [148] 08.Acid Goblins Vs Datakult - Bohemian Groove [155] 09.Catatonic Despair - Rusty Edge [148] 10.Infect Insect - Smoke Plastic [160] What's this About Nabi coming from Hebrew literary means Prophet, or a direct messenger instructed to communicate a vision from higher beings unto a certain group of people. The recently established French outfit has been faithfully spreading the message since 2004 and the aim here is clear: To push the envelope with a new roster of artists, Emanuel is proud uproot from the very same depths of inferno (where they all seem to reside), in effort to keep night-time psychedelic trance moving... somewhere. These folks take their twisted darkness in double shots and without salt nor lemon. Per-Track 1. Catatonic Despair – Skin & Salt * “… I know what you're thinking. ‘Pain is coming, but I'll take it like a man.’ But let me put you at ease. You won’t. None of them do. Men, women, children, they all weep. They all beg. They pass out. They piss themselves. They attempt negotiations. You won’t believe how many men I have seen lying right where you are lying now. Grown men with wives and children at home, offering all kinds of sexual gratification for a five minute reprieve, it’s pathetic. Are you afraid? Then there's that moment when they realize there's nothing left to negotiate. They're just mine and they're helpless. And the look. The look in their eyes, the level of surrender, it's almost pornographic.” Taken from the horror cult movie Suspect Zero, Tony has been previously released in Zavyrian productions and his tunes are malevolent to put it simply. He is also collaborating in a side project with Aldous B (Celsung), denominated Deimos Phobia. With no offense meant, Tony is messed up in the head three ways ‘till Sunday and his production makes it crystal clear. Evil lines, detuned notes without any sort of cohesion and the looming “are you afraid” sample… 2. Baphomet Engine - Antas Acoc Sod Sergalim The project of Luiz and Fabio is currently heavily focused on getting Brazil on the map, under the ‘dark, groovy” cabinet and ‘Antas Acoc…’ something or some other makes that clear. The simpleton melodies juggling along aside the storm of effects work now and again, even if it gets mostly ‘blah’ in my taste. 3. Celsung – Tri Assasin don’t Die Besides getting signed up for NHJO’s paid program ‘I will create a track name for you’ this one was obviously one of the free-bie ones. Celsung previously known as Aldous B, has already dipped in the release pool with his work in Predecessor which didn’t get around listening. The track keeps plodding all the way through much like it begun with interesting effects and twilight rhythms, reminds a bit of Cluster. 4. Celsung – Broken Butterfly * This one admittedly hit a much sweeter spot than his previous track. The whole thing is just one chaotic looping of delayed mechanic convulsions, slowly gaining momentum in between the hypnotism. A little more diversity in the high octaves might have added the cherry on top. Interesting stuff, but I guess I do miss a small form of musicality in the production. Celsung is very good at creating dark environments and the sound is decent. Some form of collaboration or a remix perhaps, by Ghreg on Earth might spawn something memorable for the industrial heads. 5. Strezz - Lyserg Saeure Diaethylamid * Constantine Laniv is a Ukrainian currently living on the holy land. With a few releases under his belt on Nabi, this one glides along well. Nevermind the overused theme, there’s a good doze of pump in here and the effects are meddled with appropriately. That said, I do feel like more stuff could have been crammed into this LSD. The track itself looks friendly enough to dissect under decks for more complex purposes. 6. Catatonic Despair – Flicker * Tony’s second appearance makes his presence heard a lot faster than his previous offering. Once again Flicker presents some rather somber elements with aggression and dismay in mind. The flicker has a good start but seems to dim all too soon, as I loose interest. Inspiration seems loosely tangled alongside the industrial influences with vague intent. It has moments of lucidity though. 7. Noise Gust – Summon Spell * Japanese born cage has been around with the Gust-o since 2003 and I’d say his work has bared fruits. I can hear dimming influences from Kuro on the techno touches, but in the end it’s his own work. And it is tight as nut, completely purposeful, musical, somber-dark and extremely energetic. Please bring this guy more often, as the spell has proved to be rather infectious. 8. Acid Goblins vs. Datakult – Bohemian Groove * The Acid Goblins are new Hungarian outfit consisting of Gergő and Adam, under the guiding light of an old ex-droidSect member (Raphael Befort AKA Datakult). If there is anything this track has is one hell of a groove. The rhythm is down right stomping, showing of a veteran at work. The thunderstorm of effects replicating short circuit madness works really effectively. So, this one makes little sense, but I have fallen in love with sheer amount of discordia. Probably because it feels busy as hell and it seems to erupt with all the right noises at the right time. Best to keep these folks under the radar, good things might be around the corner. 9. Catatonic Despair – Rusty Edge * I feel this one would have fitted better right after Noise Gust’s track, but let’s forget the order, it is clear little if anything makes sense in this compilation. The rusty part might be the painfully scratchy loop erupting here there like a mechanic fart. It picks up grandiosely by the second half with an uplifting darkness is hard to pass unnoticed by any idle listener. Probably his best work in this compilation abundant with evil lines and dandling, oscillating effects in perfect unison. 10. Infect Insect – Smoke Plastic * Cleverly labeled as ‘the most experimental project ever released’ you can just imagine this going to be some crazy shit and Dame Insect does not disappoint. Calling this one hectic would be an understatement. Forget the metronome, forget notes, forget order and forget about beat matching. Saved for last, it seems the only purpose of this crazy unabridged banging is watching fellow dancers bear the most confused look of the night. Damme is also responsible for another side project that explores noise music and it seems this one is a bit of crossover. All and all The artwork is a worth the mention. I haven’t seen the previous covers from Nabi first hand, but this one is really well put together, showing it pays off to spend a few pennies to get a good graphic designer, like is the case with Swaroop Guhathakurta (http://www.sgdesigns.co.uk). Just because you are underground, it doesn’t mean you have to look like it was homemade. As for the music, this is probably the craziest ride I’ve encountered to date this year and with good reason. Followers of Nabi are naturally hardened listeners without regard on what might be happening around the general pace of our psychedelic culture. We are tapping the underground here. So what is underground then? A loose group of musicians exploring different vibes at the expense of shady production techniques, looking for new results. The folks that re not afraid to experiment –for the good or the bad- in their up and coming careers. There is a downside to this: not all experiments will come out as dandy as we all wished. The good side… this is where new talent is born, and DMT: The First Gram has enough of it to validate the purchase for all those interested in this particular sound. actually that would be a very good idea, creating a section for interviews... the older interviews could be included there too, they were a great resource.
-
hey daze thanks for the indepth comments, i agree with them... the para halu track does sound a bit distorted... in my defense, i i just feel the album wasn't mastered properly, it is always a pain to mix tracks from there... Phobium, i have to admit when i reviewed the track last year, it didn't jump at me much, but the more i hear the more i like it and it worked great here... it rocks dude... the loop is from the outro of Pump the Spam by psykosvsky...

Artist: Mubali Album: Cats @Play Label: Trishula Records Web: www.trishula-records.com CAT: TRISHCD007 Sonic-energy: http://www.sonic-energy.net/core/content/view/204/2/ 1. Balancing Equations [146] 2. Symbiosis (with Aeon) [145] 3. DMV (Dirty, Mubali & Vidi) – Hotshot (Album RMX) [148] 4. Zalophus Californianus (California Sea Lion) [142] 5. Salacious Ooze [144] 6. Puissant [147] 7. Spacial Distortion [145] 8. Cats @ Play [147] 9. Spherechucker [150] What's this About It is difficult to know what can be expected from a man that considers amongst his chief musical inspiration artists in the likes of Bradzilla, Chromatone, Absolum, Miles Davies, Pink Floyd and Pantera to name a few. It is almost certain the jumble of influences coming from funk, heavy metal and jazz will take a role in his musical development. As a respected DJ in the Monterrey peninsula Greg Farley has been spreading good vibes, in the form of demented music and occasionally Drum & Bass with bits of jungle since 2001. In the last couple of years he has taken the job of dutiful producer to adapt the intricate structures of classical music and spit them back in psychedelic trance. The result is a new wave of madness focused on keeping the BPM counter slightly lower, with an emphasis on even stranger music. Jumping in the bandwagon we have Bodhisattva, Ghreg on Earth, Chromatome and couple of new producers that feel is important for you to loose your brain, but not you’re pace maker. When it comes down to it though, Mubali can just as well perform on the 150’s club with the same level of clarity. Cats @ Play shows both sides of the coin in one seriously disturbing package filled with original textures and experiments in sound synthesis that promise a story apart from the usual dark trance sphere. Per-Track 1. Balancing Equations Heavy rhythms and a very particular chain of effects that seems to leave the distressed notes barely hanging in there, around a loosely harmonic basis that will not make sense to most people. Some other will find beauty in the cacophony with hints of musicality and straightforward pounding. It reminds me of his track “Gromit” released previously for Acidance last year. 2. Symbiosis (with Aeon) * Aeon, another bay area producer and DJ that concocts slightly less manic arrangements, gives the symbiotic track a little more direction and pitch. It’s still very dynamic with a strong unchanging bass but a lot of great high-ranged ear candy. 3. DMV (Dirty, Mubali & Vidi) – Hotshot (Album RMX) * Another successful symbiosis by two cats focused on the hard trance section. You can feel the track is trying to spill out a bad ass hard-house lead, but Farley’s effects are not letting escape his intricate web of sonic manipulation. A lot of great drumming bits and quirks throughout make this one a hotshot in deed (and not in the Top Gun way)… which if you ask me is definitely a good thing. 4. Zalophus Californianus (California Sea Lion) * The California Sea Lion is naturally an aquatic animal and the track does justice. It is very much like dipping in the pool or the ocean. The quasi-voices for break reverbed to death are well placed. The gated destruction of beats comes in so well patched by the last bit, you actually think the track messed up for a second. It’s a relief since to my ears the whole rhythm sounds a bit dated. 5. Salacious Ooze * Rippling waves in disjuncture invade the speakers with so much clarity you can see the ripples coming out of the speakers, oozing out (in deed) an invisible mantle that penetrates the eardrums, causing temporary insanity in unaware listeners. This is everything that can be expected from a Mubali, perfect. 6. Puissant * The puissant feels like a long-dragged digital roar that extends in between the chaotic modulation, relentless in it’s approach bathing you in a rasping howl of inimical properties to all those looking for a straightforward piece. It’s downright malicious, unyielding to any sort of caveats, pushing forward with higher notes on the bass by the end. 7. Spacial Distortion * Mentally exhausting, much like trying to lift a piece of chess from the board with your ‘brain-power’. A stark, withering look at total discordia from the point of view of highly disturbed mind at the end of the control box, fucking with your mind as if a the top had been removed and someone was down there, scooping pieces out of your brain with an ice-cream spoon slowly but surely draining out every neuron. 8. Cats @ Play * Just when you thought things couldn’t get more wicked, the self titled bomb drops raucously like it could be expected. The main theme is the interplay of distressing subconscious thoughts that linger when rage swelters your blood vessels and clenches your fists tight. This is pure anger. The samples say it all, you laugh at me again and I going to break your neck like twig. Notice that’s not a quote, more like a paraphrase but the intention is there… *makes mental not laugh at Mubali… ever...* 9. Spherechucker After hearing this track for the first time I was aimlessly walking around the local mall, repeatedly scowling at the passerby’s “spherechuker, spherechucker!” and grinning at them. They in turn ran scared. Living proof the man can deliver 150’s when he wants to, reigns supreme without having to make your ears bleed. Even though, some of that now and again can be most enjoyable. The track disguises the fast rhythms, making a special emphasis on the lines, grumbling as if someone was having a tepid wallow. The rest I honestly can distinguish from the jumble and I’m not sure I want to. All and all For those of us who had been patiently waiting for Cats @ Play to come disrupting our existence with a good Californian slap across the face, like only Mubali could muster; surely feel the man has stepped up to plate delivering diversity and few shivers down the spine. Over all though, there is a reticent feeling of astonishment this ‘music’ in general can get so fucked up… and I mean that in best sense of the word. Prepare your space suits for the trek that lies ahead is an arduous one but ultimately quite rewarding. That is at the end of the day, what a psychedelic experience should be all about.

yup this one still kicks strong in my player, the hux flux and ocelot bit is really well paced...

Fahrenheit 3 is perfect IMO, the rest are good, but that's my favourite (aka the only onw i own). Last year Ultimae released, Albedo which is quite good too. the first mountain high from candyflip was monumental as well. i haven't heard floating point series, but the chillosophy series (esp #3) from Digital structures is worth acquiring...
-
hold on... hold on... more time cheers bro, i think it got a bit too noisy on a few parts, but i'm glad you enjoyed

thanks, looking forward to any tips or advise

Artist: Spies under Von Magnet Influence EP: Shape Your Shade Label: Celestial Dragon Web: www.sonic-dragon.com , www.spies.tv CAT: CDREC-04 Sonic-Energy: http://www.sonic-energy.net/core/content/view/202/2/ 1.Fragments of Ice – Fire Of Illusions 2.the passenger 3.a cosmic operator 4.nostalghian’shape What's This About French composer Spies AKA Holeg AKA The Star Shrink Shooters has entered the psychedelic scene when he started touring with Juno Reactor in Japan. His musical career extends to over 50 tracks in numerous compilations, with an equal amount of diversity in his work. Spies stands as cinematic electronica, with Holeg the pace chances to electro-techno… and if you ask about The Star Shrink Shooters, you might get a doze of Psychedelia. Spies’s debut was released by Techno-Flux in Japan as Notinisim in 2000. Three years later Holeg’s double CD Reality Drifts, on Wirikuta Recordings featured collaborations with Tim Shuldt, Shaolin Wooden Men and the Von Magnet trio. More recently Spies has been working with Cinetiks Music that is going to release the full-length album for this teaser titled Suvmi. Putting a frame on Spies music is realistically unclassifiable, the man as is a free spirit and he’s not going to let you box him in any category. He innately likes to merge “modern electronic scapes and rhythms, deep atmospheres, classical/contemporary scores, ethno/world music with even more sonic influences in likes of rock and jazz.” Can you tell yet Shape Your Shade is not going to sound like psychedelic trance yet? And barely electronic chill? They couldn’t have stressed more this music is “Cinematic” accompaniment for audiovisual experiences lacking the visuals, well not entirely… back in 2001 when the Niotism was produced, Holeg began talks with Thierry Saint-Paul to visualize the sonic conjuring of Spies, and so an multimedia collaboration began. Even from the days of Niotism Spies had also been collaborating with Von Magnet, an outfit of three artists: Phil Von, Flore Magnet, and Jerome Soudan that make art/music shows with screenplays, plastic art, theater and music. The affair began when Spies remixed Von Magnet in 2003-4 and since then an album of re-worked pieces has been in the works. Shape Your Shade is the preview containing two exclusive pieces and a couple of soon to-be-released tracks with the full album. Per-Track 01. Fragments of Ice – Fire Of Illusions * The first time it hits you this might not be your usual Celestial Dragon release, is probably when the Flamenco guitars and the feet-stomping rhythms star thundering. The main girl singing like a lost gypsy soprano is simply dazzling besides the guitar bits. Half way through the action we drift to complete silence, as electronic synthesis eventually builds out to the main bridge. “Fires of Illusions shivering inside me. Explosions of emotions, my heart is my enemy.” So, it is a flamenco play, with an electronic intersection and heart-break song all in one… to put it simply… 02. the passenger “You can just feel in details, in bits and pieces you never bother to put into words… and you can feel these extreme moments even if you don’t want to. You put these together and you get the feel of a person.” We have officially drifted to ambient surroundings with mysterious aura and a strange aquatic sample as if a duck was swimming in the pond. Bells toll here and there until the passenger arrives, and apparently he’s somewhat of a creepy fellow. 03. a cosmic operator * Once again I feel like in the planetarium, it’s all spectral ambient before crashing out on heavy duty night atmospheres, phasing from different moods with strange sounds and samples that more than communicating sound, open a small doorway for different visions. If you are one of those who thought “Treefingers” from Radiohead (Kid A) had potential, you might enjoy it. Normally I won’t find myself listening to this, but now and again it is perfect, beat less ‘music’ to explore in the depths of your pillow, plugged to the headphones with a cloudy mind… Traveling to the confines of your dreams. 04. nostalghian’shape * Like the name indicates, nostalgia takes a bit more shape with a beat of sorts and actual melodies remaining borderline IDM. The real kicker is some Italian fellow that keeps on japing about existentiality here and there. Even though I don’t speak the language you can pick up so much from the intonation of the voices: the desperation, the anger and the music follows accordingly – like is the case in the first track as well- bringing forth hazy memories of the Nine Inch Nails song “A Warm Place” featured on the Natural Born Killers Soundtrack. Why? I don’t know, I’m not claiming there is a musical connection, god knows how neurons interact. All and All This one is unexpected. Flamenco guitars, IDM and ambient in one cinemasonic experience? If you’re an eclectic dude looking for anything that sounds different from the ordinary chill out, with a bent for post-modernism, or you are just simply a Spies fan give it a whirl… this shade might not shaped to fit everyone regardless. hmm.. well.. despite the awfuly tuned voice, it reminded me of blind guardian for some strange reason (and god knows i haven't heard nearly enough to make that claim), i would go for some modest mouse, maybe letters to cleo? for more electronic based stuff check out electric birds (sp) too... that's all that is coming at me right now...

out soon on a p2p network near you

What music are you listening to right now?
RAH replied to Sputum Rotgut's topic in General Psytrance
Kemic-al - Illuminatus ohh yeah... -
nice! definatelly downloading this...

i really liked the penta track, "looking great" haha... what a name... and silent horror delivers a minimal creepy track. Terminator works wonders with a stunning track it's clearly not dark but i see it like his last piece of work for what it is... what he was doing best, full power morning blasters. Overall i honestly feels this one of the strongest compilations vertigo released with the exception of yes or no, which i never got... so i don't know. and i agree Planetary point is g'un as well
-
how about secret option C, a mad track with friendly beats and clearly defined cue points. WHy can't i get them both? This alone is no grounds to scrap a good track... but... they add little by little to the perfection pot... this is was just my experienced, perhas more haxxor dudes had no troubles...
-
i can't get myself to review this one... somedays it rings a bell, some days it just dosen't at all and it seems terribly dispersed and chopped without a clear direction, not mention is very unfriendly to mix and i refuse to fade in the intro's... Indigo Child, Pump the spam and wishful sinful have pretty good moments though.
