  2. Ok Alleycat, here comes the truth :-) (at least my version of it) In order for you to have the Good / Positive you NEED the Bad / Negative. So, even if you apply the most die hard hippie peace love and harmony theme to our common communication, we will still need to focus on both the good and the bad. Harmony is balance, this means balance between negative and positive also. Of course, not everybody does that equally well. If someone starts an "appreciation topic", its defined in the topic that its about how much you appreciate it.. which will, to some extent, lock the path it can take. So, bitching around forever in such a topic is pretty much off topic and rude Id say. However, if all topics were appreciation topics, it would be quite lame, it would signal "we cant handle any truth but our own", essentually equaling a closed instead of open mindset. What we need is communication which is true to reality and ourselves... Heres one for you - You do not eleminate the negative by not dealing with it. Actually, you enhance the negative by suppressing it. - Krell

  7. I agree, the Microchip EP marked a change in the sound. It was a continuation of the Minimal/Tech sound BUT it was combined with much more power in the bassline. The same can be said for the Paps EP released at the same time, once more one side was tech and the other side quite aggressive & dark. I remember the Paps stuff becoming VERY popular in my area, with the emergence of Creamcrop Records who supported the rising Minimal Psy trend as well as giving some energy to the establishment of Dark Psy. Before Parvati Records was established, the people behind the label organized outdoor events, stuff like Paps "Vibes from the Other side" was played there, along with Aether, Ect, Hux Flux etc. Putting those sounds together, the dark minimal sound, featured by Paps, Magus and many more and the more organic and quirky sound by huxflux, ect, aether etc gave birth to Dark Psy - Or at least, it must have been a strong inspirational source for the artists evolving around Parvati Records. In this I suggest that both Parvati Records and Creamcrop Records, which are/were both based in my town, have had a huge influence on the sound they represented (In no way Full On though). However, I think "Full On" is more of a reaction to the emergence of strong "dance floor killarrghhs" like "Coming Soon", "Intercorporal Stimulator", "Digital Ache" and so forth, than it is a continuation of that style. After all, 3D Vision released its first compilation also in 1999, which featured a very full on sound - A full on attitude with many melodies and a fast pace... not really relaxing, and not really minimal stuff either... This is also why I suggest that Full On does not build on the Tech sound of X-dream and Paps - but it does react to it. Also, it is born as a genre in its own right at aproximately the same time (which I think is why you come to your conclusion, since you put 2 and 2 together). Remember - What prompted the need for the description "Full On", in the first place, was the need to differentiate between Minimal/Progressive Psy and the more stereotypical Melodic & Break/Climax driven trance. Untill the two "Minimal(later progressive)" and "Full On" became established norms, people would go to events and complain about the music wasnt what they expected. Either because they were fed up with the cliche formula and wanted the new tech sound, or because they couldnt relate to the new tech sound and wanted the good old formula. We began more and more to see what was essentially "Full On Floor" & "Minimal/Progressive Floor". Where it had previously just been one floor. Then, like now, there were debates - "Minimal Tech is NOT psy / goa" / and "Goa is BORING, no evolution, Minimal Psy is the future!" etc. So - I dont think, as such, that Full On would be building on stuff like X-Dream´s Microchip EP (since they were sort of 2 opposites inside the same spectrum). However, I do agree that "Full On" would need to react to it, since the sound of the scene at that time was becoming divided and both directions needed to evolve if they wanted to have their place at the lineups. Full On builds on Oforia, Tandu, Pleidians, Infected Mushroom, Tim Schuldt and stuff like that. Progressive builds on X-Dream, Planet BEN, Organic Noise, Tristan, Montauk P and that stuff. Dark Psy is born from the combination of older organic psy like Hux Flux, Ect, Aether etc in combination with the dark & aggressive released by Paps, The Delta, Snug as a Bug, Magus and so forth. But ok, if you still feel convinced X-Dream "Coming Soon" is at the base of the Full On sound, then I dont think I can conjure up any more arguments :-) At least we can agree on one thing, and that is that the "Full On" term began becoming an established norm at the same time (its infancy). Or at least I think we agree there :-) - Krell
  8. You are mistaken. The Microchip EP came out in 1999, one of the most overplayed tracks at the VooV Experience that year, along with Paps "Vibes from the Other Side / Digital Ache". Those FOUR tracks where played again and again..... "Vibes from the other Side" being very dark and aggressive. (Tracks that changed the sound of the scene if you ask me). Also, there was Children of Parardise' s first album "Urban Alien", released 1999 which also cemented the "chopper bass", but I dont think that was so much related to full on as such, since it seemed a bit more laid back in attitude (Full On is, after all, all about attitude and not whether its a 16th bassline or not). While Children of Paradise was more melodic and traditional, the microchip EP was more techie and the Paps EP went into darkness, aggression and a bit of Tech also. I can find stereotypical Full On basslines from before that time, and I even believe I have some earlier Quick tracks with a typical 16th note bassline from their first album "Machina Electrica & Fornax Chemica " released in 1998 if I dont remember wrong. Tim Schuldt released some also around 1998 on the Aurinko Records debut compilation "Score", I think. (btw, Im not taking this from long term memory, I listened thru my entire CD collection not long ago, noting all this stuff) :-) Other than that, there was the first Oforia album "Delirious" released 1998 on Dragonfly. An album representing a whole new sound and production quality, taking most people by storm. Go listen to that album, and compare it to newer Full On, it sounds very alike. For me, the huuuuge basslines was actually the trademark of Astral Projection, I think it was a big factor in their success to be able to make much fatter basslines than their peers at the same time. Listen to their "Trust In Trance" album release 1996 and compare it to what was else there. My experience here from Denmark was first that Israeli Trance identifified the power driven israeli goa/psy variety, laced with ethnic melodies and pumping bass. That was the recipe to make people groove back then... but, with time, it just become cliche and it all sounded the same. As soon as that happened, Israeli Trance was = todays Full On in regards to how people viewed the genre. Of course now, Israeli Trance, is just what people call Goa Trance.. they were not there, so, its easier to comprehend. BUT I KNOW BETTER NO MATTER WHAT ANYONE SAYS *takes some pills to calm down again* :-) - Krell

  10. Hehe, thats how I got my copies, met this very nice munk kinda fellow in the middle of Odense and we started talking - I then bought some of his CDs. Funny thing is one or two years later I ran into the same guy and had another chat. About the music, I do think some of it sounds a BIT like Koxbox, but mostly the production and clarity of sound. Sharing studios I think ? Bauneholm Studios. For sure, the purpose of this music is spiritual - And I would say, these releases are "Spiritual Trance", not something I really experienced becoming that popular at the time, because people wanted israeli trance with lots of melodies (proto full on). Anyways - Some of the lyrics become too much, however, some are ok if you keep an open mind - Which is of course not possible when you just dismiss it as hare krishna cliche... Still, this IS the real stuff... Id much rather listen to this spiritual and often vocally driven trance, than newer dali, hypersonic, skazi or infected mushroom.. The Sri Hari stuff is more balanced and real. - Krell

This is also how I understand you, I dont think you are running around with too high expectations of yourself or anything like that. What I think is that you have real expectations for when you make a deal, and expect that the deal is carried out in its original tone. You have some standards, which in the end fall short of the organizers willingness to prioritize you. This is also why I say I think you are reasonable, but the organizers are not up to the task, and because of your low status, you take the fall for them. Spending a lot of time working and preparing for stuff, which basicly gets the carpet pulled underneath its feet. Remember we also talked about booking you for our events, and the terms ? So - I know that you are a very reasonable fellow, not counting the limo, 20 goupies and 17 star hotel you wanted ;-) Just kidding :-) - Krell

The truth ? The truth is that if you want the scene to improve, you have to work at improving it. Raising peoples awareness of the problems, for instance in regards to the booking mechanics of the scene, in forums is of course the beginning... However, I think those who need to be aware, are aware, and have been aware for many years now. Straight up - Elysium doesnt get the bookings he wants because his music is not in demand. It used to be in demand, and he knows how you treat an artist professionally, this treatment he does not experience anymore. Elysium has been reduced to having to deal with an upcoming artists status, simply because most of the people in the psy scene are 16-22 year olds who dont have the legacy of the music from the 90ies. Ask them who Elysium is, then ask them who Eskimo is! - Ask me and I reply "Eskimo is the nemesis of Elysium". The Elysium brandname wont sell a lot of tickets for an organizer anymore, wont bring in a lot of people, therefore is unimportant. Never mind the music, it IS about the money. Thats the truth, and the fact that Elysium knows this to be bullocks, since he has enjoyed a different professional perspective earlier in his career, makes these facts intolerable for him. If you have a strong brandname "Astral Projection", "Infected Mushroom", "Hallucinogen", "Deedrah" or whatever - Then, no problem. If you are DJ Nobody, or Liveact Unknown, then noone will invest time and money in you, since that investment simply doesnt pay off. Just business, nothing personal. It really is up to the individual organizers to find a balance between profitability, art and professionalism. I dont think we have that much of an impact on bad organizers debating this in a forum, since I really dont think they truely care enough to participate in forums on this level anyways. Im sure, all of us who organize parties, do so the best way we can. At least those here. The thing is, there are plenty of others who are not here, amongst whom the problems reside. They dont care about the depths of culture, its about numbers... Profits, Visitors, Permits, Promotion etc. Heres a sad fact - Success and Action speaks the loudest. Therefore, these organizers will focus on creating the biggest events - As long as the artists show up, and the party goes on, people are happy - and they dont care whether and artist (dj, live, deco or whomever) gets treated badly. Why should they ? They are there to party, once they are done with that, its on to the next party, and the next...... I know WE care, but another sad fact is that we here, on psynews or isratrance are a minority. Take a look at isratrance for instance, "There are 5920 active users from 64 countries" - 6000 active users, thats only a SMALL FRACTION of who will attend all the festivals in Europe this summer. (I wonder how many of those read these topics, and of those, how many can influence anything). All we can do here, is to support each other, swap stories and so forth - When we know some of us practice what we preach, perhaps we can do more for each other. Work together. As an organizer and DJ, I have the choice between breathing new life into my DJing career by making use of the numerous "I book You, You book Me" offers I get, or, "You come here and play for free, I go to you and play for free"... or - I can just try to make it right, and by doing this reap personal benefits in regards to personal pride, accomplishment and so forth. I choose the ladder, because I have a code of conduct, breaking with that code will undermine the foundation my ego is standing on :-) Elysium and I, can get into heated discussions, as we can with many others. There are countless topics where we dont see eye to eye, and as many where we do. What annoys me the most, with what people make him go through, is that he usually seems very reasonable, and the reward he gets, is that people keep changing the deals on him. While I also often see it as whining, and I sometimes think he should change his nick to "Grumpy Old Man", there is no escaping the enevitable truth, that you cant expect to be treated with professionalism when you are an unknown artist. If you get a booking, and you tell the organizer you are sending over a contract, they will laugh at you and book someone else. Plenty of DJs and Lives to choose from after all... The organizer workload surely has an impact as well. Festival organizers multitasking between too many tasks...... I can only speculate, but I guess if the festival organizers make 150-200 deals, and once its time to honor those deals, they realize their ressources and skills are insufficient. Then, the problem is passed down the lineup, and its the artists which will bring the most attention & money to the festival who get priority over the others (the dispensable ones). In the end, the organizer will adapt a stanse that the artist is being unreasonable, simply because the organizer himself has been pushed beyond his/her capacity to deal with the tasks at hand. There is no choice, but still, in reality, the problem lies within the organizer not being up to the task, for whatever reason (often lack of experience causing poor coordination). We pass the shit down in the system. Are all of these organizers evil and bad people ? Or have they just found the limits of their organizing skills resulting in disorganized multitasking. I think, its the last. People easily seem arrogant when they are under pressure, and they dont know how to deal with the situation, so they have to let many things go. Having a vision is easy, realizing it is difficult. @Elysium If your sole deciding factor for being a part of the psychedelic scene is that you are here as an artist, and as such expect bookings on a professional level, then by all means, leave. Are you, however, in this for other reasons as well - as I suspect - I think you should think twice about what you are doing. There are good and bad people, good and bad experiences - everywhere in the world. You dont solve them by leaving them (you just encounter new problems, which you are increasingly ill equipped to solve). Compose the music you like, because you like it - Dont expect anything from the world, besides it allowing you to compose your music the way you want it. If enough people like your music, you become a star once more, and you wont have to deal with all the bullshit the rest of us do :-) The same goes for all other musicians. Dont let music become your profession, or expect it to be, when there is no market for your product. This is what it all comes down to, supply and demand. It is NOT going to get any easier in the future. - Krell
  13. As far as I know he is to release an album on Ketuh Records. In any case, I hope it will be sooner rather than later - Always hard to predict how releases turn out. We booked him for one of our events to take place in November, flying him in from australia. Looking very much forward to his live set :-) I think, his tracks have a diverse sound, interesting approaches and ideas + work very well - All qualities that rarely go hand in hand as well as they do with Gappeq :-) - Krell

    Posford

Reasons Simon Posford Rocks - Good Music - Lots of classics. - Diversity - Both chillout & trance productions. - Promotion - His label, Twisted Records, legendary. - Evolution - Breathing loads of LIFE into psychill w/Shpongle & side projects and great support of psy chill artists through releases on Twisted Rec & Backroom Beats. - Imaginition - Not just to create new music, but to put in secret tracks in music and also supporting the use of CD Enhanced w/MultiMedia on the 1998 Dementertainment compilation. - Humility - He never asked to be "the elvis of psy", and as far as Im concerned has tried to downplay his own role, where others try to inflate their role in the scene. He does not have to, the reason for that MUST be creative & positive energies. - Quality - Promoting quality in music & releases, essentially setting a standard to inspire others. Reasons Simon Posford Sucks I really cant think of any at this point, perhaps a bit more evolution on the trance side of things - Leaving his old sound, moving into something new... If you just listen to Hallucinogen tracks there is far too much Copy/Pasting going on... Too little diversity in the use of sounds. Then again, he ist just human, so, its ok :-) If I knew the fellow, Im sure I would find plenty of things wrong with him - We all have our faults... For now, I just think there is more to be learned than avoided in regards to his person. Im going for a Simon P tatoo on my left butt cheek now - Gonna be killah :-) - Krell
  16. About the Sandman stuff, at the time of its release (Witchcraft) its spooky / sinister sound was what stood out in comparison to the mainstream - There can be no doubt about the fact that this album set in motion events which would lead towards darker and darker tracks.... "....it looks like a cross between a spider and you worst nightmare" Now if that voice sample isnt dark, I dont know what is :-) Best wishes Krell
  17. Well - Yes and no. The Delta has made tracks of different styles. Take the Scizoeffective album for instance http://www.discogs.com/release/79339 "Travelling At The Speed Of Thought" + "As A Child I Could Walk On The Ceiling" Which are actually quite old tracks first released on Blue Room 12 inches + are quite full on, while the rest of the album is more Psy Tech Trance (deep & heavy). So, its basicly the 1997 style vs the 2000 style. It all comes down to musical evolution, and so it becomes harder to label a particular artist as one or the other since they will break whatever stereotype you assign to them. Best Wishes Krell
  18. I think most of the 3D or Symmetric stuff ok or good, but not excellent. What I like nowadays are covers which dont seem so computerized, Digital Structures often use fotos - but the stuff I like the most are these. http://www.discogs.com/viewimages?what=R&obid=77400 http://www.discogs.com/viewimages?what=R&obid=521725 Of course, there are many more great covers out there - in the long run, I find the ones which seem more handcrafted to be interesting. Best Wishes Krell
  19. I knew it was a joke, just wanted to make the point anyway in case someone didnt :-) I consider Twisted stuff to be Full On / UK Full On - Its a style of its own, but, its mostly "twisteds" style - it has a lot of similarity with other full on, and goes well in full on sets :-) Best Wishes Krell
  20. Im like a dog with rabies, once I sink my teeth into something, I dont let go untill my victim(s) lie bleeding in the street. Teethgrinding Wishes Krell :-)
  21. Thanks for the lecture on Simon P, but I think I have my view on him and his music pretty much defined from listening to and Djing it for more than 10 years now. I love plenty of his stuff, but, when you dig deep you will find loads of other musicians with at least as much, or even more talent & vision (relative to your own taste in music). Some got signed on Twisted, some didnt :-) So, Radi6404, I dont disagree with you that its great music - Not at all, I love it. But, we were talking about production quality, which is something that can actually be discussed objectively, while taste really cant. Best Wishes Krell
  22. No, not at all - Actually I have been debating in the past that for a period there was far too much focus on sound quality versus the actual musical content in regards to what releases received critical positive hype. However, thats nothing new - For a time, in the nineties, it seemed like any track with a really strong and powerfull/deep kick would become popular as long as there was enough ethnic melodic elements in it. Since modern production standards are generally higher than in the mid nineties, they dont have that much impact on whether a track will stand out or not in the face of the competition. In that sense, I think there is far more focus on the musical aspect of the music now, than there was 10 years ago. Since 10 years ago, good production alone could turn a boring and uninspired track into a hit easily. (Today, the margins between good & bad production are much smaller). The reason that Ive been listening through all of this old & new releases was that I wanted to find all those old gems, since I knew they were there :-) I hope to make a mix of them some time soon. Best Wishes Krell
  23. Where did I say that music is all about sound quality, and why are you trying to make it sound like I did? We were talking about production quality, musical quality is up to the individual to establish, and cannot be debatted as such since its a matter of taste. Are you about to commit the same mistake as "radi6404" here ? Now - I will give you the benefit of the doubt in regards to you putting words in my mouth and tell you that I enjoy old louis armstrong and classical recordings equally much as newly produced music. Sure I would have loved better recording, but the music as such and the effect of it is still highly pleasurable. So - Of course you are right, but I wasnt arguing otherwise, so I hope you realize how misplaced your comment was. Best Wishes Krell
