  1. Virtual gear is gear too!
  2. DMMT-Break On Thru Ok, so more correctly it would be The Doors-Break On Thru (DMMT remix), but that's how they had it on the cd...
  3. Just so you know, too, its definitely going to take a while before you can get those 'clean' sounds. But don't be discouraged! It will come to you eventually. Keep at it, and don't give up no matter how bad you think you are. I tried for years to make nice sounds and got nothing. But then all of a sudden, something clicked in my brain or something, and now Ive been able to make some nice clean sounds. Some take a long time, like I did, some get it right away.
  4. well, as for your 1), Im not sure such a program exists! I use Renoise Tracker, which costs less than 100 euro. Its a tracker though, and a bit less user-friendly than Cubase or Reason... Ive used trackers for years so Ive had a bit of an introduction... www.renoise.com You can check out a demo, the only thing that is restricted is the output of tracks, and ASIO support. ANd a nagscreen pops up now and then... You can find a ton of totally free VSTi's here: www.kvraudio.com THe search is great. Some free VSTs I recommend Synth1 Microgram Claw EZpoly PolyIblit SH-101 Delay Lama Triangle II I use a sample for basses, but Triangle II can make some pretty decent basses too. Preset "bass04" works off-the-shelf. As for percussion, you can use VSTs: Drumatic (different versions) I use samples, mainly from the Nano sample pack (Check Jikkenteki's 'Synth1 Challenge' for links) Renoise has a bunch of effects built in, but you can also find a ton on KVR. Just search the name of the effect you want. I use a ton of delay, reverb, flangers, phasers, filters, panners, spatialisers.... Search around KVR, Im sure you'll find something you like. the MDA effect pack has some particularly useful FX. Well, hope this is a bit of a help!
  5. CUT AND PASTED FROM MY TRIBE BLOG ______________________________________ Wow... What a city! What a bunch of twisted freaks! (thats in a good way! ) Had such a great time... Met so many really awesomely cool people... And I can't wait to go back! It started early in the morning in Reno, I drove my sleep deprived ass to the airport, parked the heap, and checked in. Then, I spent the obligatory 45 minutes waiting in the TSA line, which was understaffed (surprise) and the staff that was there, was unhappy and overworked (again, surprise...). So I got to my flight like 5 minutes before it left. But I got to it! SLC airport, 2 hour layover... THen, Vancouver. Wait in Immigration for about 20 more minutes. Then, nearly through, another customs agent says "Go through that door over there", so I do. Wait for about 30-45 minutes before I even get to talk to an agent. Who proceeds to grill me on where I work, whether or not Ive done drugs in the past, they even wanted the phone numbers of my bosses... I can understand, that they don't want any more addicts to take care of. But damn, they almost didn't let me through... I discovered that, to work in Canada as a foreigner you need a work permit. So I didn't get to play at the club... Well, another time perhaps. After the 2.5 or so hours spent being psychically raped, I finally met up with Ryan, Maja and Jessica. Then, the airport was left behind. That evening at dinner I tried a very strange concoction. The traditional (apparently) drink up there, the Caesar. Not bad... Interesting. Then later that night, we all trucked over to the club, where I had a great time, Chris played a nice set, but I think Mike Causai's set was exactly what I was looking to hear! Great stuff. Nice atmosphere there, nice people, great time! Meghan and Roman showed up after a while, and we stayed around til it ended. Lots of smiles and warm vibes to all involved with the club! I'll be back! Next day, we found the Amsterdam Cafe, and it was almost like being back in A'dam again. BC is indeed famous for a reason! After that we searched for some necessities for the party, then eventually went to the venue. So we sat around still a bit sleep-deprived, as the madness coalesced. Then we all stood in the opening circle, which for me was actually pretty heavy. Then the first dj of the night played her chill set. Now, memory may not be serving 100% here, so I may have some sets mixed up... After the chill set was some ok sounding fullon, but, well, not my thing... Then the next dj played some prog, Yotopia's track on set/4 if I remember right, among others... Then the next dj played with a laptop, and it was the cleanest set so far. Not bad. But again, not my kind of thing. Sunash played next, more my style of stuff. Not bad! THen, Ganika vs Krazy K. They played some proper full throttle stuff, despite (I was to find later) some problems with the mixer, they had nearly nothing in the headphones! They certainly did well enough regardless! Then, after the vs set, Mistress Jade came on, the mixer was fixed, and the madness began with a vengeance! Maja played a great set, very clean. Then Meghan came on and played another great set! Also very clean! After Meghan was Longstocking, who played YET ANOTHER great set! These ladies are all very professional up there behind the decks, they know exactly what they're doing and they do it well! After Longstocking was Stargirl who played some time-appropriate (but, still not my thing...)) fullon. Then that was the end of Jade, and the beginning of the afterparty with Chris from Organix. Of course he played a good set from what I heard, but I was pretty out of it by then and we all left back to Gania's and some 'relaxation'. Then, after a bit of a nap Sunday we all wake up, and have a bit more madness til its time to go to sleep. We all hoped that the 3 or so cellphones that were around would wake us up. But apparently, our minds had other plans... So it ended up, we woke up at 5:00 ish, or at least, one of us did. Then, the frantic search and gathering of our stuff. Goodbyes to Ganika and Nighthawk, and another cab arrives to spirit us away. Maja nearly had a freakout... But it was I who would miss their flight! 15 minutes too late to check in... So I had to wait 12 hours or so for the next one... Which, Ive had worse... (JFK in NYC... ARRGAHGAL:G'ASEJFJOADG;SLJ;) So I got into Reno about 10:30 last night, safe and sound.... I had such a wonderful time, it was great to meet you all, Maja, Meghan, Roman, Gania, Jessica, Roger, Chris, Ryan, the various felines, and anyone else I forgot... Looking forward to next time! Lotsa love from the desert, Joe

  7. The best IMO is when the bass and melody join together to make a single coherent sound. If the bass of a tune isn't well made, and the melody is, it sounds unfinished. But a melody is not a necessity, plenty of trance out there is more like, IMO, pure psychedelic noises to dance to, not necessarily musical. Like Cosmo, his stuff is good, and VERY psychedelic (IMO!!), but no melodies. Thats not the point of Cosmo-type stuff (as so many seem to misunderstand). The point of that, is psychedelic dance music. All that requires is a clean sound, crazy noises, and percussion. "Look elsewhere for melodies! We're tripping here!" You get what I mean. But, any producer worth their releases can make a clean bass almost as an afterthought. They don't need to spend time thinking about it too much. Then they can focus on making the melody perfect! Or making the strange noises bouncing everywhere perfect.
  8. OK, so I propose we keep this thread here in Music Making, as it is pertinent to music making/mixing. So, the "Consume, You Drone!" thread ( ) will be pretty much anything NOT music-making related. Sound ok, mods? If not, then, well, you know what to do!
  9. hey Droso, check the date on the last post Its been nearly a year...
  10. OK, So I know there was another thread called "What did you buy today" but after a good bit of searching I couldn't find it!!! The search didn't do anything at all (it never does  ) So shoot me if this is the wrong place! So, after leaving my Sony MDR-V700 headphones in Vancouver (sorta on purpose, damn those Sonys and their terribly uncomfortable ear cups...), I got me a sweet pair of S-Audio's. http://www.amazon.com/ULTRASONE-DJ-Surroun...s/dp/B000GUBPJ4 They cost me like $80 less than the Amazon listing price, and that included tax. Local DJ shop FTW!!! MODS PLEASE HELP ME BY FINDING THAT ELUSIVE THREAD MENTIONED ABOVE!! Or not!
  11. Well, I didn't have the time or the hardware to burn all my originals so I just took what I needed... I had no trouble keeping them in my sight and secure... However... I found out the hard way, that in order to get paid for anything in Canada one needs a work permit. Which I didn't have. Customs actually called Chris from Organix, and told him that if I were to play, the club could be shut down. THey told me I could be deported and banned from Canada. I nearly got turned away. They wanted to make sure I actually had a job and a home. And after seeing all the junkies and homeless up there, I can sorta understand. But, grilling me and pulling me aside just because I have dreads is fucked up cultural profiling. So, next time Im "visiting friends", and Im bringing the phone numbers for my work, all my bosses, my parents... Anything those smug border pig fucks could need.
  12. A nice prog mix by my friend from Ohio, Meghan, currently its Liquid Soul, the one with the 16th bassline, I forget the name. Its on Synthetic Vibes. get it: http://files.vrillusions.com/download.php?..._valentines2007
  13. my own track-The Carp ! So far sounds good!
  14. seriously the best work Ive heard from these artists! Particularly Bodhi v Devic, Mubali v Infinitesimal, Electrypnose, and Ghreg on Earth. The rest are great too! shhhhhhhmoke to you all at Element of Time!
  15. Here's the latest update: http://download.yousendit.com/501AD1E51C71E0CD Polished and tweaked, added a few more little things. But, still... Well, Im never quite satisfied, even when a track is as good as it gets... Thanks to Oxidelic on Triplag, for the great tips! (Probably the best feedback Ive ever gotten on a track! ) its a 128kbps .wma, encoded from a 96khz 32 bit float .wav. If you want full quality, let me know but be warned 96khz 32 bit float .wavs are not small files...
  16. I always get the impression of space travel when I hear Highko! Fffwooooooossssssh!
  17. I actually just sent them an email to see if I could get a copy direct from them.
  18. oh, wait, you're talking about Highcosmos.... I thought you meant Gravity... Nevermind. I don't have that one... Dammit, and its sold out...
  19. Kindzadza-Fight or Die (Highko Remix) On the bridge of the Millenium Falcon, with Han and Chewy, flying through the asteroid fields! Waaaa hoooooooo!!!!
  20. My copy works fine... Is it a particular track or the whole thing?
  21. Nice interview! Thanks W Lizzard and Penta!
  22. OSOM-Osmotrix, from a Kindzadza tribute (rough draft) mix Im working on. Oh, and it was released on VA-Deliver Us from Evil (Serephana). Incidentally, Serephana only released that one VA... I hear it was because of distribution issues (ZMA? )
  23. Ok, after some more work here is the latest version: http://download.yousendit.com/501AD1E51C71E0CD Feedback REQUIRED!! Also, I renamed it. Its called "Can't Go Home" or "The Carp" (2 titles you say? Preposterous! But then, classic literature is filled with such things! )
  24. well... honestly... (Im not trying to be rude or anything here, just honest) It sounds like stuff I made when I first started out... Which wasn't so good. But we all start somewhere. Its pretty quiet, the sound quality isnt so good, and I can't tell if anything has been EQ'd. What do you use to make music? Its got some nice psychedelic noises, though. Sorta reminds me of foresty stuff, like Derango at times. The bass and kick should be much louder, much more 'up front' if you know what I mean. Keep working! Don't be discouraged at all. Everyone has to start somewhere! Sounds like you could have some nice stuff once you figure it all out a bit more! (I think no one has replied because they maybe don't want to hurt your feelings... It was the same when I first started posting tracks here.)
  25. Nikon? He posted a blog thingy on tribe or myspace or somewhere about going digital... Thats the last I heard to tell you the truth. Im sure it will be better than letting ZMA steal any more...
