    piracy

First of all, i'd just like to say that if it hadn't been for file sharing, i probably wouldn't have gotten my first release with Gi'iwa Productions. In essence, i can probably thank "piracy" for my music career (if i even have such a thing). Second, i download loads of music, but if there's something i really love, i buy it if it's possible to. For the maximum sound quality, and for not wanting to lose my favourite music if my computer crashes or something like that. I think it's great to be able to download music for free and give it a thorough listen before deciding whether i want to buy it. That said, i find myself agreeing most with the "anti-copyists" in this discussion.......... Hear hear! They have tracks that i have released FOR FREE and/or have not even released at all, and still they charge money for it. ASSHOLES. As long as you buy at least SOME of your favourite music, then at least you're making a bit of difference. It doesn't have to be all or nothing, you know. Keep downloading if you feel that you have to, but buy and support as much as you can anyway. One doesn't exclude the other. Oh, come on! That's the stupidest analogy i've seen in this discussion. If there actually were a magic wand that could infinitely reproduce kickass psy out of thin air, then fine.. But in reality there are always actual people and actual work involved. Bullcrap. What benefits does the consumer deserve in this situation?? Who did the work?!? What has the consumer actually done other than get an enjoyable auditory experience? Also there's a huge difference between massive multi-national corporations that bitch about losing half a percent of their multi-million dollar annual profits, and tiny close-to-non-profit psytrance labels that just try to survive. I mean, get real and drop the self-richeous ideologizing. All manners of capitalism are not equal. Using capitalism to expliot everyone else to make yourself stinking rich is not even comparable to using capitalism to be able to make a decent living doing what you love.
  2. Ok then. Oh.. Sorry. Did a search for "infected mushroom icq" but didn't find anything so i posted it.
  3. I'm just a person, just like you. I happen to make a bit of music that some people seem to like. So what? I'm still entitled to an opinion, right? I just think it would be interesting to hear what Erez would do when solo since they say he and Duvdev don't even agree among themselves, and especially since i happen to not really like Duvdev's singing. Not really a radical opinion in this forum, i'd reckon. Am i pointing any fingers?
  4. Read about it. Hmm.. Maybe Erez should do a solo project?
  5. Hi Jonas!

Great website you have. My fav track is Upside Out... wicked!

    Peace to you!

    :D

  6. I think it might have to to with the "psychedelic" bit; If a piece of music sounds like stuff you've heard a 100 times alredy, you most likely won't experience it at psychedelic. Something that sounds like nothing before it is much more likely to force you to open up your mind a bit.. But then of course it's up to the listener's preferences if the goal is mind expansion or just hearing some good tunes. Or both. Not really surprising to me if many people that are into psychedelic music actually want music that feels psychedelic to them. However, in my opinion it would be pretty narrow minded to not like anything that is not psychedelic. Obviously people have different opinions, and that's of course ok so long as they are respected. Personally i think the AMD album sounds great production-wise, but no real hooks that make me remember any specifics and think "oh man, i gotta hear THAT track again". Works great as background psy while doing stuff, but not exactly my first choice during a trip or something like that. If you like AMD, i definitely understand why. If you don't, i defenitely understand why. (maybe i should be a diplomat)
  7. Well, at least a division between chill and non-chill shouldn't be too much limitation even for the most adamant anticompartmentalist...? I think it would be a good idea to separate the chill from the rest when doing the best of '07, but i think separating fullon/psy/prog/whatever into separate lists will be very difficult since everyone will have their own opinion on which album belongs to which category. [Edit:] By the way, Colin, great job on Free Range, love it! ^^
  8. Personally i don't like the Ka-Sol album either and i'm actually a bit surprised that it's so damn popular. My problem with it is mainly that i'm allergic to all those painfully disharmonic "melodies" that dominate some tracks... If you don't mind disharmony, though, i suppose it could be nice. Since everyone insist it's so damn good, maybe i should give it another chance.
  9. This is weird. There's a reggae band called the Tamlins (pretty ok actually ) and for some reason CDDB or whatever can't tell the difference between Tamlin and The Tamlins or whatever, so if you put this CD in your computer and play it in winamp, it might say The Tamlins instead of Tamlin.......... *grrrrrr* Or at least i saw this myself once and i assume this is why mr DeathPosture made the same mistake.. Just for the record: Tamlin made the track, NOT The Tamlins! (in case anyone actually believed otherwise )
  10. Book of Eden is one of my favourite goa tracks ever. Gives me goosebumps every time. There's nothing like a thick slice of psychedelic cheese! Also agree completely with Jon Cocco about Exit eternity, another kickass Chi-A.D. track that's also one of my all-time favs. Furthermore i agree with everyone about the great "Chi-A.D. + Suntrip = <3" idea, and i sincerely promise to by a copy if it ever gets released properly.
  11. Ok, my intention was not to turn this into an off-topic self-promotion discussion, but nevertheless....... Maybe a moderator should move some of these posts to a separate thread or sumthin? Anyways.. First of all: thanks! Second: I dunno what makes something qualify as complex in your ears, but.. Fjaqek is to date the most twisted track i've made. There will be nothing quite like it on the album. Sorry. However, a couple of tracks will definitely be in the same kinda vein as Fjaqek; you will definitely recognize the type of sounds and structures, but not nearly as all-out fucked-up whacky as Fjaqek (at least not to my mind, you may disagree). For that you will have to wait for other future releases.. Then again, complexity can take many different shapes! I think my track The wizard who smoked an Oz (on Vertigo Records' The Meaning of Life) is more typical for the overall style of the album than Fjaqek is. If you've heard me play at a party or my mp3-released "live" set from Transylvania Calling 2005, then you should know more or less what to expect. I have removed all audio clips and downloads from my site for now until i put up some decent previews from the album, but you can find clips on psyshop if you follow the links or just do a search for "tamlin" on their site.
  12. Not in the least. There will definitely be clear elements of the crazy twisted stuff i have released so far, but much of it will be more melodic and diverse. I want the album to show people i'm not that easy to pigeonhole. So please don't expect an album full of Upside Out's and Fjaqek's, or you might be disappointed. Keep an open mind.
  13. Nicely done! I haven't read the whole thread so dunno if anyone already suggested this, but i think it would be quite nice if our dear mr Anoebis could fill this out with as many albums as he can think of, instead of just a couple of examples... so i can get more recommendations on nice styles. I don't really care whether everyone agrees on which album goes where, it's still a nice pointer.
  14. My debut album will be released in September of this year. More info later.
  15. I think it would be very interesting if some more well-known producers like Colin of OOOD and others that hang around on this forum would contribute to this thread. Sorry guys, but i hardly recognize any names of the people who have answered this thread so far.. =P As for me, in case anyone is interested: 1) What programs you use, and any hardware instruments, midi controllers, etc (PC Specs too)? Software: FL Studio with a bunch of VSTi's for sequencing Sound Forge for sample editing Hardware: Dell 2ghz Core2Duo laptop with 2 GB ram M-Audio firewire 1814 soundcard Genelec 8040A monitors Evolution midi keyboard and usb controller A couple of pretty good microphones ..also i have a Roland jv1080 digital synth, but i hardly ever use it nowadays. 2) On average, how long does it take you to build and finish a Song? Just counting the time that goes by from when i first start a track to when it's finished, it can be anything from a couple of days to a couple of years. If i work more or less non stop it can be anything from a couple of days to a month. However, it is extremely uncommon for me to finish a track in just a couple of days. 3) Which parts do you find tedious when building your track (if any), if it pattern sequencing, automation, etc? Getting the fatness and pressure of the kick & bass to feel just right intro & outro managing CPU load 4) Where did the inspiration come from to start producing music? So long ago i can't remember any explicit reason, except just for fun and being creative.. 5) AND Your favourite style to produce? Anything, really... Also depends on the criteria for "favourite": What feels most frictionless (least tedious) to produce? Fast, melodic, monotonous hypnotrance. What is the most fun to play around with? Anything that doesn't sound like anything that has been heard before, i.e. more experimental stuff that usually never ends up as finished tracks. What is the most rewarding in the end? Taking into account only myself: Classic melodic psy/goa. Taking others into account: whatever kills on the dancefloor, which often means twisted and/or funky stuff (depending on the crowd).
  16. You're kidding, right? Or at least you must be confusing which is which? IMO... The good things about this album: - It is very very well produced. - It has a lot of pure full on energy and some catchy (yet heavily cliché) buildups and melodies, and i am convinced it works great on many dancefloors. - Like some have already said, it is way better than most full on. The bad things about this album: - The electric guitars. - The obvious and utter lazyness of re-using samples, sounds and rhythms over and over again... I mean, seriously... To make my last point painfully obvious, try putting the album in winamp or whatever and quickly jumping to the following timecodes. track #1: 1:00 = track #4, 1:06.... track #1, 1:40 = track #3, 1:57 = track #5, 1:20..... These parts are Extremely similar. Completely interchangeable. Could easily be parts of the same track. Why does he have to re-use more or less exactly the same sounds in so many tracks?? Is it THAT hard to tweak out a fresh sound from a synth? Some synths sound like they are taken straight out of Cosmic experience without even chaning the oscillator waveform or anything (e.g. the lead that comes in at 0:53 in track #8).. And that same guy talking about quamtum mechanics or whatever in two or three tracks (mind of god and multiverse).. And pretty much exactly the same snare rhythm in two or three tracks (tune up and electric universe, for instance).. And everyone already mentioned the electric guitars........... And also there's a point about the rhythms that's a bit harder to describe... See, there's this basic rhythm/pattern that is very common in lots of music.. If the basic 4/4 kick is on beats 1 and 5, then the most basic version of the rhythm i'm talking about is the beats 1, 4 and 7... the lead melody in track #1 at 4:44 is an example. the lead melody in track #2 at 6:24 is another example... etc etc. This is also the basic "ragga" rhythm, which should be familiar to everyone. There is something about this rhythm that is just fundamentally compelling to humans, for some reason.. You can move it around in different variations, like 1 3 6, 1 4 6, 2 4 7, etc, but the basic pattern - the relationship between the three "hits" - is the same in each case (the "distance" between the hits are 3, 3 and 2 however you move them around).. You can find more or less obvious variations of this pattern almost everywhere, expecially in "megahit" psytrance like 1200 mics and such.. I don't know why, but there's something about that rhythm that just "works"... And using it in a stylish way is often a safe bet if you want to create a nice flowing groove.. But sometimes it just goes too far, and i think silence in action is a very good example of this. The pattern is just too obvious throughout the album.. It's all over the place! I mean, using it is fine, hell, i use it quite often myself, but using it all the time as obviously as it is done on this album just feels lazy and cheap to me. To summarize, i think Silence in Action has some very strong selling points, but in the end it feels like boris took a few of the most megahit-ish parts from cosmic experience and fed them into an algorithm that automatically generated 10 more tracks out of exactly the same building blocks and following exactly the same formula. Would be great if it was just a track or two, but a whole album full of it just feels repetitive, uninspired and lazy. For me it's kind of a love-hate kinda thing....
  17. Connecting audio thru the screen?!? Wow........ Sounds like a great way to get a noisy signal. What exactly the CRT did to your audio signal is something only the screen and its makers know. Obviously it must have been some kind of EQ if the bass got stronger. Google is your friend, look up the manufacturer or something if you want detailed information. If all you want is more bass, just use the built-in EQ in Winamp or whatever software you use to play your music. Doesn't always sound great, but obviously sound quality is not one of your chief concerns. If you play directly from a cd player or something and you don't have an amplifier or whatever that has an EQ that can bring up the bass, then you're screwed. You need some sort of EQ to make the bass stronger.
  18. I don't agree. (except with the obvious tautology that something that has ceased to be fresh and interesting is no longer fresh and interesting ) Maybe i'm too much of a perfectionist, but if a track i'm working on doesn't stand up to being listened to over and over and over and over and over and over again without becoming boring, then it's simply not good enough. I mean of course it stops being new and unfamiliar when you've heard it a bunch of times, but being old and familiar is definitely not synonymous with being uninteresting or boring. Also, i mean, some of the best music isn't even that interesting the first time you hear it.. Sometimes you have to listen to it a few times before it sinks in and you realise its greatness. I don't believe this is the explanation.. I also most definitely experience the phenomenon of music sounding like the pitch goes down when i take my headphones off, but it's usually enough to just lift the headphones a bit off of my ears to get this effect, and it can just as well happen outside or whereever and not necessarily in a room with lots of colouring acoustics. One thought i had is that it might be just the volume level.. I mean, does this phenomenon occur even if listening at really low volume and removing the headphones? I'm not sure that is does.. I feel like the phenomenon is clearer if you have really loud volume in your headphones. Maybe it's possible to get the same effect from just lowering the volume quickly from really loud when using speakers? I gotta investigate this...
  19. Am I the only one who thinks FL Studio is superior to Reason? I haven't tried Reason in a few years so maybe my comparison is unfair, but.. The fact that Reason is set up as a hardware rack is not something that impresses me whatsoever. I just find it annoying to have to scroll up and down ad nauseum and not being able to use the full width of my screen. Also, in principle software supplies endless possibilities compared to a finite set of hardware, so software that pretends to be hardware just feels fundamentally and pointlessly limiting to me. Why not use a program that takes full use of the fact that it is indeed software? Also i believe it is a huge myth that Reason sounds better than FL. My theory is that it is more difficult to make FL sound good because in Reason you get more "good" samples and presets built into the program, while with FL you have to supply your own samples and VST plugins to get some really good sounds. This means that FL is more work which is of course bad for lazy people, but it also makes room for more originality for those willing to make something of it. But all other issues aside, FL supports VST plugins and Reason doesn't. That point alone should be enough for FL to win hands down. Comparing FL to professional software like Logic or Cubase, however, is a completely different question..
  20. 2 x Genelec 8040A They kick ass, i'm just ashamed i can't provide them with a room setup that does them justice so i can make full use of them. I need a bigger apartment...
  21. IMHO... In terms of production quality and skill in applying music theory, it is difficult to get much better than this. For this reason alone, the album is most definitely worth a listen. There are a couple of nice tracks here, though much of it isn't psytrance at all. However, Duvdev should be gagged and confined to a closet or basement. He can hit the right notes (albeit probably with the help of some hard auto-tuning), so technically i would say he can sing, but why the hell does he have to sound like Cartman trying to do a Metallica-impression?!? If they did it with some self-distance* and some sense of humour (think Tenacious D) it could work, but when they try to be all emo and deep with lyrics about unhappiness and pain, it just feels embarrasingly pretentious to me. It's impossible for me to take the emotional aspects seriously when Duvdev seems to be so enormously in love with the sound of his own voice. I would personally prefer no singing whatsoever, but if you ARE going to sing, then either ditch the attempt at serious and deep lyrics, or ditch the "damn my voice is cool" style of singing. You can't get away with both at the same time! "with artilleryyy, with artilleryyy, rattattattattattattaah"............. *SHUDDER* ( * = literal translation from a swedish term, can't find the english word, hope you get the point.. )
  22. dmtree: thanks (= hope you enjoy it! K0bne: hehe thank you.. (= of course there is more coming! I'll never stop (; altho lately i've been focusing mainly on the mixing&mastering bit, and being the perfectionist that i am, the rate of new material coming from me will probably be a bit slow until i reach a level of production quality that i'm satisfied with. I don't think i'll feel completely comfortable until my sound is nearly as clear&thick&phat as, say, etnoscope, or son kite, or dare i even say x-dream.. (= (it's always good to aim high, right? hehe) Have a nice one! / Jonas
  23. Thanks for the comments, everyone (= moni: Of course I remember you, how could I forget?! I am indeed doing fine, hope you are too. (= Anoebis: There's nothing concrete in the pipeline at the moment, but i have a couple of things in mind depending on which label it will end up on.. Send me an email or something if you wanna know more. (=
