  1. Hey all, www.tamlin.se has recently been restructured and simplified. Updated info on new and upcoming releases! --- Storz und Bickel on VA - Holocryptic Audio ( 2007, Sanaton Records ) The Misty Gardens of Swiidendo on VA - No Tone Unstirred ( coming soon, Faerie Dragon ) Tamlin - Spectrogram ( september 2007, Faerie Dragon & Gi'iwa co-op ) ---
  2. LOL, oops, didn't really misspell, more like misremembered the name. Must have been tired or something. *fixed*
  3. Sanaton Records - Holocryptic Audio
  4. In order to balance out any potential negative vibes that the "can't stand" poll might have caused, let's do it the other way! :posford: Suppose you were in charge of the lineup of your own ultimate psy festival. What styles would most of the artists be playing? You know which is which.. Note that you can check several answers. Oh, and feel free to describe the general features like the size, scope and location of yor dream festival as well.
  5. I think this poll is turning out pretty much as I suspected it would, with Fullon in the lead followed by Dark.. However, I was hoping that "I love it all" would win. The WORST thing? Really? I can definitely think of worse things than people having an opinion. =P Don't take it too seriously, these are just opinions after all and everyone has one. Also I think it's interesting and healthy to know what people are biased against. Expressing negative opinions doesn't make them stronger or more real, just a bit more concrete so we can look at them, relate to them, and deal with them. Instead of just having them lurk around in the back of everyones head and seeping out in more subtle forms that could eventually do more harm than facing them head on. Maybe i'm over-analyzing and over-philosophizing... I just don't think it's such a bad thing to discuss a topic like this. Oh, and since such a small percentage of the population actually are musicians, if only musicians were entitled to an opinion as to what they think sounds good or not, then this forum would be very quiet. Actually, I even remember someone here having the exact opposite opinion; that it's wrong for artists to criticize other artists.

    IDM

I feel Squarepusher has been severely underrepresented in this thread. He makes IDM (kinda) and he's a freaking genious, so... Here goes. For all you guys into melodic downtempo idm euphoria, you should check out the tracks Lambic 5 Poetry and Lambic 9 Poetry (on Budakhan Mindphone and Ultravisitor, respectively) as well as the first two tracks on the Squarewindow EP. Simply wonderful. Then if you don't mind some drum&bass, his latest album Hello Everything is so very very nice. I <3! Unusually many melodic tracks for a Squarepusher album (and soo good melodies *drool*), with perfect production, trippy details all over as always, a couple of "acoustic" jazzy/mellow tracks, a couple of _really_ twisted tracks, and a weird noise track for good measure. Shortly put, a well-balanced and relatively accessible taste of Mr Jenkinson's Mad Skillz. Hard Normal Daddy is grrreat, one of his best albums and kinda unique among his works. Half of the tracks on the album are a kind of very melodic oldschool drum&bass which has a very special style that somehow feels like live jazz / funk. There's just something very special about the way that he programmed those drums that make them feel like a real drummer even though they are obviously programmed.. Paradoxical and fascinating, and again: simply wonderful. The other half of the album is much weirder and more intense, but still great if you're into that sorta thing. However, I wouldn't recommend Feed Me Weird Things to a Squarepusher n00b (it's his first album, so he hadn't really perfected his Mad Skillz just yet), unless you're really into oldschool jungle/drum&bass and don't mind some really weird atmospheres. And even then, I would much more strongly recommend Big Loada, which is probably THE best oldscool jungle/drum&bass album EVER (with a heavy idm twist). Classic jungle sound with loads of energy, oh so sweetly & idm-ishly detailed and intricately tripped the f__k out. If you still haven't been scared away by his ingenious insanity after the above recommendations, there are some serious gems (many of his best tracks) on Go Plastic(!!!), Ultravisitor(!) and Do You Know Squarepusher. However, these albums are very varied (especially Ultravisitor) and definitely not for the weak hearted. The rest of his material also has some scattered gems and a lot of pretty good drum&bass/electronica, but I dare wager that you won't care for them much if you haven't loved everything I've mentioned so far. Or maybe if you don't like melodies at all and only care for weird/experimental stuff with severely strange atmospheres.
  7. It seems to me that many people that are into psytrance have one specific subgenre which they generally just can't stand to listen to and have no respect for whatsoever. For instance, a lot of people seem to think that it's pretty much an insult to call something Fullon. Others can't stand listening to anything with a typical Goa sound.. Etc. I think it would be kinda interesting so see how many people we have in these different camps here on Psynews, and which of these sub-genres is the most dispised. Since we all have our own ideas on what constitutes these styles, I will give some example of what I have in mind with the different choices in the list: 1. Goa: Suntrip stuff, Filteria, Astral, oldschool stuff.. 2. Progressive: Iboga stuff, etc.. 3. Fullon: Well, you know.. 4. Tech: Midi Miliz, Spirallianz, Whizzy noise, The Delta, etc.. 5. Dark: Derango, Penta, typical Russian sound, etc.. 6. Suomi: Well, you know..
  8. Squarepusher - Venus No.17 The first vinyl i've bought in years... Also ordered but not arrived yet: Squarepusher - Hello Everything MWNN - Moment of Truth Orbital - In Sides Moby - Everything is Wrong (2CD remix album) + a few books.. Pavel: Good for you! That's one of the best compilations ever!

    IDM

Thanks for the tip, but unfortunately I can't find it.. (Yes yes, I am one of those terrible people who downloads music. Rest assured, however, I DO buy the stuff I love!) Well, how about separate answers for "old BOC" and "new BOC" then? Doesn't have to be THAT similar to BOC, I mean I know they're quite unique, I would just really like something with somewhat similar kind of trippyness of atmosphere, warmth of melodies and thickness of beats. *yum* Ulrich Schnauss, as mentioned, I think comes pretty close to these basic ingredients, although maybe a bit more cheesy than trippy. Still damn sweet tho.

Uhm... "Either" or "both", i guess? But i think they've pretty much gotten better and better, so maybe "new BOC" then. Gimme! :clapping:

As far as I know (not that I'm an IDM expert by any means).. Boards of Canada is IDM. Squarepusher is IDM. Both of these kick ass, but other than that, and the fact that they have both released stuff on Warp records, I would say they hardly have anything in common whatsoever. So with this in mind it seems to me that IDM is basically just some kind of umbrella term for electronic music with generally experimental structures. On the other hand, a lot of IDM seems to be extremely similar in style.. For instance, a lot of the stuff that I've heard from Yasume, Displacer, Ochre, Funckarma, Arovane, Maps & Diagrams, etc, etc, could all be described in very similar terms: more or less minimal, fluffy ambientish melodic atmospheres, with glitchy noise-ish rhythmic structures on top. So on one hand we have the wide definition of IDM, in which case describing a piece of music as IDM says very little about how it actually sounds.. And on the other hand we have the narrow definition of IDM, which is a very specific style of electronica. Just as Rotwang wrote about there not being any consensus about what the best work of Autechre is, I suspect that it might also be very difficult to find any consensus on what constitutes a single representative example of typical IDM sound. But like Gnome says, it doesn't really matter. The only problem I see is when asking for music of a certain kind.. "Do you know any good IDM?" probably does you no good unless you also namedrop an artist that examplifies the type of IDM you're looking for: "Do you know any Boards of Canada-ish IDM?" or "Do you know any Squarepusher-ish IDM?". I guess an answer to the first question might be Ulrich Schnauss, while an answer to the second might be The Flashbulb... And again, these are extremely different from eachother, but some would say both are IDM. Anyway, anyone know any good Boards of Canada-ish / Ulrich Schnauss-ish IDM(-ish)?

GAAAAH!!! OVERLOAD!!! TOO MUCH GREAT MUSIC!!! And i haven't even read more than two pages of this thread so far
  13. Sienis - From a Nutter Perspective Review it! Review it nooow!!
  14. np: Stendeck - Faces (2007) Quite nice! This kinda combination of emotional ambient and intense intricate rhythms is very nice indeed. :drama: :posford: Moar!
  15. Divine Soma Experience - Welcome to the land of Dragons [edit] That was my first thought when i read the subject, anyway.. Been looking thru some of the recommendations so far: Bad Sector was a bit dark for my taste.. Kattoo sounds very interesting but will need a more thorough listen to fully appreciate, i think.. Mnemonic also sounds very promising. We like Melodic IDM, yes we do. Mnemonic reminded me a bit of The Flashbulb. Is nice. Thanks for the tips, keep em coming plz! ^^ [/edit]
  16. Cheese FTW!1! \(^o^)/
  17. Yes and no. I think there's definitely a point to this argument, but i don't at all think it can be seen as a final answer on the whole question regarding which sequencer is best (by some objective measure). What works best for you is what you are most comfortable with. However, even if a person is extremely comfortable with using an old version of FastTracker or whatever and just gets confused and frustrated and can't be creative when using any other sequencer, then this is a limitation in the user only and this doesn't really have anything to do with the fact that another sequencer could give the user much wider technical possibilities and tools to work with. Of course personal preferences control the decisions of individuals, but that is not really relevant to an objective comparison of software. For example: at the moment i prefer working in FL since i know it well and i only have a PC, but other than that i am fairly certain that the latest Logic for mac is a better sequencer in terms of stability, sound quality and technical possibilities.
  18. Well, this is a psytrance forum and the best of '05 and '06 lists were surprisingly enough about psytrance, so....... However, maybe it would be a good idea to separate the chill from the trance, like some suggested in the best of 2006 thread. Doesn't seem like there's much interest for this idea tho.. I definitely understand if some feel it would just be too much work (for our dear moni or whoever would do it) counting all the votes and putting together the results..... Oh well.
  19. Hey, don't go belittling Squarepusher! Most of his stuff is waaay more psychedelic than the type of full on that this thread is talking about, and a lot of his track are very trance-dance-friendly. Venus No.17 for instance, one of his relatively recent singles; it starts out simple and monotonous and just keeps progressively growing and growing and growing until it finally climaxes in an ecstatic tripped-out oldschool jungle frenzy.. *drool*
  20. I know some people really don't like the idea of making Best-Of-lists and they will probably have ill will toward me for suggesting this, but.. I thought the Best-Of-lists for 2005 and 2006 were nice and they gave me a few recommendations on very good albums that i would probably have missed if it had not been for these lists. However, as far as i can tell, 2005 was the first year that this was done.. So... Why don't we all go back and make retrospective Best-Of-lists for past years as well? Preferrably one year at a time with a reasonable voting deadline for each.. Maybe start at 1995 and work forward, or start with 2004 and work backward..? Just an idea.
  21. I know that feeling all too well..... To answer the sub-topic question: No, i don't think it's possible to get into any kind of trance while dancing to that kind of stuff (unless you're so high you're in a trance anyway, i guess). I think one reason for some producers to do this is that it's a very cheap trick to give som extra (though "fake") energy to the sections where there actually is a steady 4/4 kick. I mean, if there's a break with some kinda buildup, then the contrast between and break and non-break gives the kick a bit of extra punch once it comes back.. And for some reason they just take this trick way too far and use it over and over again thru the whole track.. Maybe it's becase if they left the kick kicking for a few more bars, people would realize there's no _real_ energy there to begin with, so they have to fake it by having all those breaks there instead... Without realizing they completely destroy the energy by over-using breaks instead... I dunno, just blabbering off the top of my head. Damn irritating to dance to anyway. Me too... Really annoying stuff.. Just giving a shout or whistle out of sheer joy or ecstasy when the biggest climax is reached or a really killargh beat is dropped, that's one thing and can contribute to a really nice dancefloor energy and atmosphere.. But those people that for some reason have to shout and whistle ALL THE TIME, especially as soon as there's the tinyest break or change in the music, and just keeps doing it with every breath they take, that's just extremely annoying and completely distracting from the trance-dance experience.

    piracy

One important point in this whole debate....... Say what you want about the morality or (dis)respect aspects of copying music and stuff.. That's one part of the issue. But another part of it is that is completely and utterly fucked up is the fact that people are getting fined for like hundreds of thousands or even millions of euros for sharing copyrighted material. I mean, if you're making money off other people stuff, like those russian dickheads or people selling pirate dvd's or whatever, then you definitely deserve to get fined, but normal people (often young people/students with no income) with some movies on their hard drive and some P2P software hardly make any cash off their piracy and do definitely not deserve to have their lives economically destroyed in this way. The punishment is WAAAYYY out of proportion to the crime. This is perhaps not really relevant to the psytrance scene, but it's nevertheless an important part of the whole piracy issue. Standing up for ethics and respect for artists is one thing, but standing up for giant corporations destroying peoples lives over greed is something very different. Not that i'm saying that anyone here is doing that, but still... Might be good to have in mind when deciding to be on the anti-piracy side of the debate.
  23. Shaft: thanks ^^ You can download ICQ6 here. I downloaded and installed it just to try out the new sounds.. Sounds pretty cool i guess. Kinda funny with the standard icq-"uh oh" sounding like a typical IM-style vocoder. Probably wouldn't have thought twice about it if i didn't already know it was IM, tho. (wouldn't have downloaded icq6 at all, actually) Except for a short music clip when starting the installation program, and two small melodic loops for "call connected" and "call on hold", it's all just short sound effects. Maybe "soundtrack" is overstating it a bit. Now we just gotta wait and see who will be the first to dare steal these fx and use them in a psy track..

Yes i know. I thought you might think i was directing it towards you personally, since it said your name in the quote tag.. But of course i was commenting on that other guy's comment. No worries. [edit: i've changed the name in the tags to avoid any further mixups] Definitely not! If you had not already given such well formulated answers to some of the bullshit arguments in this thread (especially gumballs' stuff about "a true artist into the MUSIC does now care about the fuckin money they make", etc), then my previous post would have been three times as long.
