can anyone shed some light on tekno music?

Hey there,

Everytime I go to a big festival I always notice a group of people who stand out of the crowd (mostly from France, but not only). It's like they come there but don't really care about psytrance, they play some sort of hybrid acid core with some breakbeat influences, most of it is very raw and basic but you can have a lot of fun with it given the right circumstances. I never really knew how to get into the scene, nor what the hell was the scene called in the first place, until only very recently I was explained it is called "tekno" (willingly spelled differently than "techno" to show the difference), and that this sound basically only lives in squat parties and is a heritage from the Spiral Tribe movement. I've always tried to track down some cool tracks but never really seem to be able to find those that really did it for me at festivals. From youtube vids I've seen I guess this one gets the closest to what I mean:

Does anyone has more infos on this kind of music, and most of all some nice tracks to recommend? ;)

'tekno' or tekkno originated in dutch countries, I'm surprised you don't know more.

It is old, from 1991-1992 and, yes harder and rawer than the German-American techno it derived from.

It influenced the 'Hardcore' scene in America and elsewhere and I think it is mostly dead today.

Mostly released on low-buget vinyl, it is hard to find nowadays.

well that's the thing, I used to dismiss it as some outdated hardcore as well but it seems that pretty much like psytrance this scene is in some sort of bubble where it just keeps developing among people who know it, even though most outsiders don't even know it exists. This one from 2007:

Not really a big fan of this music but they have tekno parties here all the time. Not much in to the tekno scene but I would say they throw a party just as often as a psy trance party. They are always underground parties, usually free or a small donation in a squad place or outside. Sometimes they throw a dark psytrance party/tekno party and they have 2 styles going on. I noticed a lot of dark psy fans can also appreciate tekno music and the other way around. Don't know if this goes for every place though. And funny enough a lot of French people I meet at underground parties like this music.

By the way I remember one time I was at this great psy party and it ended in the morning time. My friend in a van asked me if I wanted to go to a 'techno' party. Thinking it was the usual techno I hopped in and when I arrived there I was like 'wtf!, this is way different then techno', after this my friend explained the names. That was the first time I heard it hehe.

Hi there! that's my first post on this forum, so nice to be there! :)

I'm gettin' into psytrance culture in these days after few years of tekno/tribe/acid italian scene, so here's my favourite tracks of this scene...

I think there's a lot of issues in the italian tekno scene, causes must be sought in the attitude how ravers attends the parties;

no spreading good vibes, but getting to a rave to vent everyday illness

not so good, i think the way have to be something like "creating something good for the world" but that's it

obviously i've met a lot of good people and this in a sick environment is pure magic :)

(sorry for my bad english guys)

Consider that in the tekno universe there's a lot of different worlds, just like in the psy trance movement i guess!

I agree with you btw, the track in the first post is too frenetic, not my style

Crystal distortion, like fky, is one of my favourite artist in the scene :)

I may be wrong, but isn't tekno a modern version of 1990's Rotterdam Techno - later known as Gabba Techno? To my ears, both sound the same, only that tekno is darker (if possible) than Gabba.

Here's the classic of the classics of Gabba techno:

You Will Never Be Mine (yeah, Gabba was famous for being somehow humorous)

The distinction is slight to the vast majority of people, but to the small group of devoted listeners the difference between tekno and gabber is HUUUUUUGE.

Also, hardcore and techno are strongly defended by the purists who will argue against any association with any other style.

Oh yeah, the purists. What would forums be without these pests? :D

You know, you have to improve your ears in order to appreciate the smallest peculiarity of a specific genre

for example, try to ask to a napoletan neo melodic ballads fan what is the differences between death metal and power metal, or what is the differences between dark psy and full on ... i think the answers could be simillar to this: "awwww metal is all the same noisy crap"

actually every music listener sculpts his listenings according to his habits, maybe this is sad but thisfact give us a huuuuuuuuge world of different styles of music and god bless the purist :)

i'm a really huge fan of tribe tekno styles, but really, i'm not absolutely able to listen and enjoy music like gabba, old and new school

here's a new example of what i mean when i talk about tekno:

cheers guys, and sorry for my poorly english :)

Oh... I saw the headline without listening... Now that I have listened to some of the examples:

I have heard this referred to as Hardcore Techno, I was never into it enough to seek out any artists... BUT

Hellfish and Producer - Bastard Sonz of Rave is an amazing album:

Here's the first track from it:

http-~~-//youtu.be/pD6TygOcMkc

Have to be in the right mood for it for sure...

Parties for this style still happen in Toronto... rather underground still

http://thenameisembryon.com/

In the audio section of the site are some dj sets - B7 used to be mindblowing

This one is from this year: B7 - Ignition (hardcore)

haha well you see that is exactly what I used to think. IMO the main difference is the philosophy behind the music, pretty much the same way as the difference between goatrance and hard trance back in the days. They were pretty interchangeable yet a goatrancer would never come near a hard trance record because one was made for the "underground" free-party culture whereas the other was oriented towards clubs.

I kinda like what I'm hearing ITT, especially this one:

Can anyone recommend a good compilation or artist album?

well, I was hoping for that too but still nothing, in spite of all the tracks posted by tulpa23 :(

The only one that came close was this:

more like these, tulpa23?

Just to add more confusion...here is a track I have on a CD...

It says 'Gabber Until the End', but it isn't really gabber....'cause it don't got the sped-up vocals...

It is cheese though, made by 18-year-old kid...

I liked gabber because of it was over-the-top hardcore you could never dance to for long (or at all).

Hardcore is more serious, made by people who claimed to be criminals...

Tekno is the Euro version...although I don't know what the girl behind www.nwtekno.org would say

They never got it in the NW....

- note the ever-present 'hoover' sound

Out of interest, how is this sound made?

some of this stuff is cool, on the other hand some of the stuff posted in the thread sounds too much like hardstyle (which is shit) imo

freetek similar to gabba? are you serious? the only thing these two have in comming is the bpm and distorted kick. that's like comparing cosmosis to tiesto! ;)

but basically lemmiwinks hit the nail on the head.

imho tekno is utterly devoid of cheese (well, 99% of the time :) ) and edm in its raw and pure essence. and unlike goa, listening at home isn't even half the experience. you have to go to a party to feel the raw power of tekno. still, i'm getting too old for this. it's similar to what they say about 5-meo-dmt and dmt. tekno is the power and goa is the glory :)

i used to go to lots of tekno parties and actually my first festival ever was czechtek (an amazing experience i'll never forget ;) ). back then most underground partypeople i knew would (like me) start with drumnbass then move to tekno and finally to psytrance. some stayed with dnb, some with tekno, and now some are moving on to minimal... whatever. here's some classics from austrian tekno parties:

http-~~-//www.youtube.com/watch?v=341qK2heIFQ

this one is ideally enjoyed at 180 bpm.

http-~~-//www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJhi_EWFqIs&list=FLSnSFzAiDAWW2Bhtpdptcww&index=15&feature=plpp_video

http-~~-//www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UgnejApIm4&list=FLSnSFzAiDAWW2Bhtpdptcww&index=2&feature=plpp_video

http-~~-//www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_AnOcHwGX0

if there is just ONE tekno classic, then this is it.

however, tekno sadly is generally not available on albums, and it's pretty difficult even finding out the name of the artist or of one track, so i'll recommend this mixtape: http://freeteknomusic.org/archive/c/chemotaxis/sets/cts-teatime-mixed-by-emix
