my take of the melodies is here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/b8aly6h7j9vl6y7/BHb77ZrJPX/smoke%20my%20dang-a-long.mid

imho they should be pretty spot on.

the background melody is more difficult with all that modulation. i tried around with lush-101 and wired the velocity to filter cutoff, but i'm not sure if i'm right and even if i am it still needs a lot of manual modulation. anyway, here's my try: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/109605202/Smoke%20my%20dang-a-long%20background.mid

  • 4 months later...

spiritual healing is a difficult one, but i gave it a quick try.

here is the Result.

the synth settings: screenshot20121114at000.png

the pattern:

Sadly your link is not working anymore. I would LOVE to hear the results.

I tried aswell, just by looking at the above pic to get notes and pitchbend, i tried to copy it.

I spent about 15 minutes doing this, then about 10 minutes to tweak the synth to sound "OKAY".

Reason Subtractor was used + phaser + chorus + delay

I think it came out not very alike but Im dying to hear what you were able to create!

As you got very good response from that guy who said it was very close!!

please re-upload

anyway here is mine

http://picosong.com/RUWU/

made two loops, one without ring mod and one with. coundlt decide which one sounded better so i used one of each :D

hey

i haven't got the original files anymore, but this one should be very close or identical to the old version on here:

http://www31.zippyshare.com/v/65488712/file.html

but since i got new headphones i couldn't resist tweaking the whole thing a bit more:

http://www42.zippyshare.com/v/38941420/file.html

i have no idea what zippyshare does to the file, but the second one sounds more metallic and distant than the file on my hd???

edit: apparently picosong works better (thanks for the tip), so here's the link:

That was sweet bro.

Would you mind sharing the synth used and the settings :D

The pic from the old post is gone.

Listening to mine again the second one definitely sounds better than the first.

Ring mod is used on the second and it's also a whole octave lower but it doesn't sound like it :)

sure, i used zebra2 and here are the settings:

with this customly drawn waveform:

the original probably isn't as complicated.

what settings did you use? i think you could get pretty close with a little bit of envelope tweaking and heavy abuse of chorus :)

again im extremely impressed with your reproduction, Padmapani.

Would love to work with you someday :D

anyhoo, I guess this concludes the spiritual healing, since we both did a very okay job.

I will now start a new tune which is open for contest :D

I will also try and of course I havent started already and am not cheating.

I will select this one (just cause of the sheer impossibility to recreate it, I sure as hell wont succeed) :

Cosmosis - a line from moonshine

oh and for extra bonuspoints; the bassline also please :D

very interesting settings you have there in subtractor. a completely different approach :)

and it really sounds much better in context with the correct bass progression.

thanks again.

someday, why not :)

moonshine sure is a difficult one. i give up on getting the correct sound. i have tried every synth in my arsenal, but i've found that the only way to get the filter overdrive halfwawy right is zebra's middrive lp filter, while the original is a bp i believe.

i didn't bother matching cosmosis' cutoff modulation so i only put an lfo on top and the bass pattern still misses some of the funkyness in the original.

anyway, here's my try:

and there goes another night that could have been spent more productively working on a track :D

Wow.

How do you do it?

Do you just A/B listen and recreate note after note?

Or do you use some sort of tool to extract notes ? I know there are such tools but I never had any great luck with them.

I notice you mentioned Melodyne earlier and I would like to ask if you can tell us a little bit more.

I especially liked the bassline, it was spot-on!

The main melody sounds like it could use some distortion or maybe another bit-crushed version layered on top with low volume.Something to make it dirtier and wider.

Excellent job though on the notes. Totally curious how you did it.

i just listened and played along with the midi keyboard to get the pitch right, then tried to put in the right notes, but i could only get the rhytm right once i pitched the original down to half speed.

sadly this doesn't always more as well as here.

the main lead has already gotten plenty of distortion. besides the filter overdrive (i turned it up to the max, but it could use a lot more), i put on logic's overdrive and saturn with a tube setting (the original definitely has some tube distortion on it).

i don't think there's another layer on top in cosmosis' version. it's probably the filter of some hardware synth that makes it sound like that. the next best synth after zebra was sylenth, with which i could emulate the dirty, high screechyness better with similar settings, but in the end it still sounded way worse.
