  1. I have a friend who is versed in "electronic" music and he commonly lumps most electronic "trance" into one genre. I have been trying to explain to him what the differences are between that of normal trance [i.e. progressive, anthem, dream, hard, tech, etc...] and goa/psy and I've fallen short. Even providing clear examples of the music, ranging from that of the 90's and more modern, and he fails to recognize the difference. If you had to summarize goa/psy sounds, layering, instruments, meoldy/harmony, etc... and the like, how would you explain the differences? I mean maybe I'm biased as to the discernable differences between the sub-genres of trance, but how would you describe it? I've tried explaining on a very musically technical level pertaining to beat, scale harmonics, etc.. but that just washes over him as he isn't musically trained. He loves the music I give him, but he doesn't really understand the nuance. How would you explain the differentiable sound to someone who isn't as understanding of the sub-genres of trance? Let me know how you'd best let someone like this understand the differences. Thanks in advance.
  2. Yes this album is something special indeed. I put the lights out, the headphones on, laid back in my chair and closed my eyes; the precise requirements for slipping into a sensational listening experience unique to 9th. What a wonderful feeling to be taken away through a portal to goa, a wonderful blend of sounds that at no time are unwanted, your every minds desire sated in the form of music. You know those gum commercials where they show you this ridiculous scenario of experiencing the feeling of "what it's like to chew this gum!" Well, the previous statement is my experience of 9th in a start to finish listen akin to the commercials. An intense and overwhelmingly plush sensation of happiness. I mean, isn't that what this is all about? If you feel the connection between certain music and your being, mind you not everyone will have the same connection, that allows me to express my appreciation for the album and rate it highly. This is one of those albums; for me. I don't even need to write a review about each individual track, because while some parts I enjoyed more, the experience was overall so pleasureable that I need not separate or differentiate the entire scope of music. Buy the album, see if when you listen you feel and have that experience, then you too can write a resplendent review of an album that enriched your life as much as Ra, Christer, has for myself and others. Isn't that worth $20? One of the best deals you can make in your life. BTW, thank you Alchemist HiFi, Sennheiser, Cardas, and Pro-Ject for being a major contributor to the equation. H
  3. B E A U T I F U L ! ! ! I will write a review after more listens, but this is what I like to hear. The sound has evolved since the last release, but the nuances of the "old" sound are still there. Masterful production, liquid smooth delivery, and musically phrased. What else could you ask for? Sure, I liked some tracks more than others, but there isn't a poor track on this album. I just let the journey happen, and I wasn't disappointed. Thank you for blessing us with your gift!!!
  4. +1 Eskimo - Party Pooper lol, that made me burst out laughing when I first heard it, and it's still so intense when I listen to it today... what comes after is pretty boring, but the build is over the top for sure. Yeah, any build by Ra is fantastic, Jaia - Brainstorm is also a classic.
  5. I had a fantastic transaction with Peter. His communication and responsiveness is excellent. The paypal exchange was effortless, and the CD was packaged properly, shipped in a timely fashion, and was exactly as described in perfect condition. I highly recommend him as a seller of fine music. If only all transactions were this pleasant. Bom!
  6. Bongalore & Beyond is an amazing track. I'm very happy to see it has made it's way onto this compilation. Congratulations SiebZehn!
  7. Yes, but remember that was an imposter. We know who the real Ra is... I must say the sample didn't impress me that much, but there's the whole rest of the album to explore. If there's tracks like the more recent release, Gates of Tiphareth, I'm on board. If there are any tracks with the glory of Sign of Life and such from the old album, I'm also on board. It will be a blind buy for sure, but I hope this is a continuation of the legacy, not the end.
  8. I'm looking to buy an original Deviant Electronics - Blunt Instruments album released by Blue Room in 2000 I believe. My copy suffered a horrific accident and I simply must replace this classic gem. If you have a copy you'd like to sell that's in good condition (free of scratches), please let me know and name your price.
  9. Very good quality. Very nice sounds. Very, very boring. I sense a decided lack of inspiration for this album, and it's the kind of downtempo music I would listen to in the background while doing something more entertaining.
  10. I spent all my time listening to it instead of writing a review. Truly one of the most exceptional albums I've ever heard. <3 Shulman.
  11. Well don't get me wrong here... I'm not saying anyone should just "force" a release out of anyone. To stunt an artists creativity by pressuring them to release an album before they are completely satisfied and comfortable with their music is unacceptable. I was just eager to hear where he was at with the album and when the new expected release date MIGHT be, so I can stop thinking "it could be tomorrow!!!" and reduce my level of anticipation. I mean really, we've waited this long, what's another couple of months or whatever? I'm sure that they will be fantastic tracks, and when they're ready, we'll hear them. Enough said - oh, except that I'm very jealous that you've heard most of them already... =(
  12. ... is the new Ra album going to be released? I mean, I'm just dying with anticipation over this thing... I've only been waiting since 2001 for a sequel to this masterpiece, and as soon as I heard confirmation that Christer was making a new album I kept checking the Suntrip website every day. Seeing as it's never updated, I should have been able to find the album this summer! Can someone please give me the details on this? I'm going crazy here! When the new Dimension 5 album was released they said his album would be "released in the Autumn". Can't I just preorder this thing already and then be surprised as hell when it finally arrives on my doorstep? Wow... I can't believe how badly I want this album - the date gets closer and closer yet it never arrives =(
  13. COSMOSIS - PSYCHEDELICA MELODICA Artist: Cosmosis Title: Psychedelica Melodica Format: CD Label: Phantasm Records (England) Cat. #: PTMCD163 Date: June 6, 2007 Track listing: 1. No Such Thing (Throb Factor Five Mix) 2. Creature From Outer Space 3. Metaphysical Worlds 4. Dance Of The Cosmic Serpent 5. Life Between Lives 6. Martian Blues 7. Journey Of The Soul 8. Spanish Gypsy One word after the first listen is... SMOOTH!!!! This is a high quality release which adds a touch more melody and funk than in some previous Cosmosis releases. One thing I like is that I can immediately identify this sound as being unique to Cosmosis. Seamless transitions and inventive psychedelia are littered throughout the album. What's even more impressive is in doing this, Cosmosis has retained some of their old style, infused it with some classic goa sounds and progressions, while still sounding fresh and captivating. "No Such Thing" is such a sweet introduction to the album with it's floating, dreamy synths paralleled with a pounding baseline and some whacked out psychedelics! "Creature From Outer Space" rips a new one with phat beats, and a nicely filtered hybrid acoustic/electric guitar, and really turns up the energy. "Dance Of The Cosmic Serpent" is awesome!!! This was a nostalgic listen for me and combined some great old-school goa with the new Cosmosis flavour! Excellent! Then "Live Between Lives" is just a continuation of the precedent set in the previous track, which now includes some intelligently placed breaks and cuts. The funk really starts to flow in "Martian Blues", and for those who like nice electric guitar riffs will appreciate this one. "Journey Of The Soul" switches it up again from the direction the previous track was heading and stretched me right out onto a cosmic plane of bliss. This track is a paradigm to the smoothness of this album, and is quite possibly a Cosmosis classic. There are a few parts where it gets close to being a little overdone, but it pushes the envelope and didn't cross it. "Spanish Gypsy" slams the album shut with yet another nostalgic run through goa, enmeshed with the Cosmosis of 2007. Very well done. This album proves that tracks don't need to be overcrowded with excessive layers and rapidly changing varieties of effects to be considered psychedelic. It hypnotizes and mesmerizes with it's creative and intelligent simplicity. I really enjoyed this album, and it's precisely the style of psycedelic/goa that I relish. Definitely one of the strongest releases I've heard in a while, and certainly going to be one of the stand outs for me in 2007 I would presume. 9.5/10
  14. Talamasca - Obsessive Dream Artist: Talamasca (and others) Title: Obsessice Dream Format: CD (2XCD) Label: Mind Control Records (France) Cat. #: MCCD007 Date: May 21, 2007 Track listing: CD1 01 Talamasca - Obsessive Dream 02 Talamasca - Get It All 03 Talamasca - My Destiny 04 Talamasca - Feelings 05 Talamasca - Supernatural 06 Talamasca - Flashback 07 Talamasca - Overload 08 Talamasca - Spritual Renewal 09 Talamasca - Party Generation CD2 01 Space Cat - On Purpose 02 X.S.I & Dj Gogo - The Good Team 03 Sirius Isness - Breaking The Matrix (Remix) 04 Skazi - Imaginary Friend 05 GMS - High Vibe (Live Version) 06 Shagma - This Isn't A Mistake 07 Eskimo - To Be Continued 08 X.S.I - Frenchman In Tokyo Remix 09 Yuman - Ambient'n'roll _______________________________________________________________________________________ I'm not going to write a track by track review here. Instead, I'm going to write a review which gives you a feel for what this album offers as a whole. Talamasca has always been ear crunching, often dark, full-on, pound the ground psytrance by Cedric Dassulle. This album follows suit, however, I'd say it's not the dark, often dirty and hypnotizing formula we've witnessed in the past. Obsessive Dream has more of a focus on melody and progression. I notice less subtlety in the layering than in previous albums as all instruments seem to be balanced at nearly the same output amplitude, creating a rather one-dimensional sound stage. All tracks are energetic, vigorous, and upbeat, and are good for dancing. But if you're looking for variety and a dynamic range of musicality, look elsewhere. I question the instrument selection in various tracks because some are very flat and often annoying (some may consider them cheesy), especially if they are one of the foremost layers that the listener will focus their attention to. I recall hearing instruments like these in epic and anthem trance, but not usually in previous Talamasca releases. Now the second CD has all guest artists, and you can definitely hear the flavour each one has to offer to the current Talamasca sound. Personally I found all of these tracks to be of better quality than the whole first CD, and a few stand out like tracks 6, 7 and 8. There seems to be a little more diversity and thought put into these tracks, and I think it's exactly what is needed to improve on what Cedric has offered us in the first CD. These definitely have the potential to get bodies moving on the dancefloor, and even for home listening can be quite invigorating. But I hate to say it; this is a rather average release in which you have to be a die hard Talamasca fan, or a full-on connoisseur to really go nuts over. It's worth a listen, but its replay value is quite low, for me anyway. In the future, I would hope for something more creative. 6.5/10
  15. I lucked out and found it through a local supplier that I just happened to have 4 year old credit with =D I had searched all the online stores, ebay, and everything else and couldn't find it either. I wonder if they are ever going to reprint it...
  16. Agreed. For some reason I didn't find this album until the end of 2006, but it is of superb quality, and it's simplicity is complicating! Very smooth, eloquent music that's really captivating. Dunno why, but it just is. If you don't have this one yet, be sure to grab it.
  17. Best track on here is by Ra - which reminds me of how excited I am for Christer's new album coming up this year. We only had to wait 7 years for a new album!!!!
  18. Best album I've heard so far from 2007. Fantastic sound quality, and hints of old Logic Bomb sounds and style interwoven everywhere throughout this album. Sonic Algebra brought to mind Hux-Flux meets Logic Bomb... very nostalgic. I like this music!!!!
