    Koxbox - U-Turn

I like this ok at times, and a couple tracks have some moments... Overall though this is way less inspired sounding than earlier Koxbox... I can't figure out the guy at www.psyreviews.com - I'd say he was plugging the album either for kickback's, or just to be a kiss-ass... ... But then again he totally pans the lame or mediocre albums - it's not like he's worried about people not sending him promos... I just can't see how he could be THAT into this new Koxbox album, unless he was fantastically high when he heard it... I don't see how this album could be construed as anything remotely revolutionary or definative... Does sound like fun dancefloor music though...
  2. I have to bump this thread - I LOVE this album - this here is just so fresh and innovative - very melodic, very catchy, but very much deep and twisted... This album on one hand can sound almost silly, but that's mixed with serious psychedelia - trancedent, euphoria producing music.. It's all just so mad sounding, just so full-tilt and shameless about being weird and absolutely rockin.... Truly inspired and inspiring music...
  3. Does it sound exactly like the last one, and the one before that, basically? I really like Fahrenheit 2,3 and parts of 1 - but recently their sound seems kinda stagnant overall... I agree about Hol Baumann - would love to have an album by that guy...
  4. Otto - I listened to the "Shutov Assembly" the other night too - only the second time I listened to it - blissful indeed...
  5. I'd say the new Androcell and Entheogenic albums are the worst offenders here - the second half of the "Relaxed Journey's" comp too... Entheogenic in particular is just so generic sounding... I agree - down with all the tribal/ethnic/chanting/indian woman stuff.. And the Terence Mckenna samples too... Way overdone... Here's some exceptions - some of my favorites: * Bluetech - Elementary Particles and Prima Materia * Ott - Blumenkraft & Hallucinogen in Dub *Chilling Matenda - Mediteran (fuckin excellent!) * Shulman - In Search of a Meaningful Moment * Abakus - One Step Closer to the Sun * Autechre - Incunabula * Jean Michael-Jarre - Equinox I haven't heard many of the albums recommended above (Electrypnose is on it's way though) but I'm eager to hear something original...
  6. Yea I don't really care about "the flow" - I just know that when it's similar sounding my dancing becomes very monotonous and boring... After awhile I just start bobbing and shuffling around - if some really fresh sounding track comes in it makes me want to dance in a different way... I wouldn't give a damn if the transition between tracks wasn't very smooth - who cares? If a DJ wants to go from, say, Pleiadians --> Hallucinogen --> Hux Flux , couldn't they just put some extended break in there where the beat stops for awhile? Some of the most fun dancing I ever had was at a breakbeat party - the DJ's were mixing in all sorts of funky stuff and for each track, I would dance in a very different way...
  7. Yea we review pretty much anything electronic and psychedelic (though that's a subjective term)... Lots of reviews here for various downtempo type albums too... I haven't heard this Trentemoller but I've got it on order - amazon.com delayed my order, said it would take another month - I couldn't deal with that so I ordered it from the HVM place along with Electrypnose, Slackbabba, and Tripswitch-Circuit Breaker - I'm very excited!
  8. Hhhmm ok... If you can't beat em... Is this movie going to be in USA theatres? I love offensive satire type stuff...
  9. I read sometimes about certain music being "unmixable" while others a good "DJ tool"... When I go to psytrance parties generally the DJ's set will consist of similar sounding tracks - or it's be a full-on set or a progressive set, that sort of thing... Why don't DJ's mix wildly different tracks most the time - is it just really hard to do or something? It sure would be more fun to dance and listen to some really different stuff - I rarely hear the more colorful and unique tracks during DJ sets - it's usually the "middle of the road" type tracks...
  10. This is hilarious - and I got nagged about keeping it on topic for asking about Sandman's album in this thread - lol...
  11. Well how much do they make for doing live gigs? They can only be doing like 1 per week no? Is that enough for them to get by? I always worry about these psytrance artists not making any money at it...
  12. This album I'd say to be the most "mind-blowing" I've heard - I don't listen to it as much as I did at first but each time I do I'm just bowled over... Avatar label has re-released this - if you haven't got/heard Hux Flux "Cryptic Crunch" do yourself a favor and pick it up... Hux Flux have this absolutely MASSIVE style - once you know them, you can tell a Hux Flux track right away - it's sort of a "Cosmic computer geek meets cracked-out robot" type style.... It's just so fuckin righteous sounding - off-the wall, tongue-in-cheek-psytrance...

    Koxbox - Dragon Tales

Ditto! The sound production, effects, melodies etc are fantastic - this sounds like it could have been made in 2006, production wise... Album is a colorful, rich, layered journey into true sonic psychedelia... In my top-5 albums ever...

    Dreamfish

"Hymn" is amazing - just like was said above - it's 27 minutes long but I'm always a little dissapointed when it ends... Just beautiful... And has one of the few Terrence Mckenna samples I actually like...
  15. I might have to do that - the first time I heard both Hux Flux - "Cryptic Crunch" and X-Dream - "Radio" I thought those albums were rather bad - just sound effects and whatnot... Now they're just about my two favorites... Stuff like Infected Mushroom though grabbed me right away... Is there melody in this Quasar album?
  16. Ok I'll probably have to listen the actual album and not just samples... That really sterile, monotonous, sound-effect based trance isn't any more creative than the standard melodic catchy stuff though - both styles sound really generic...
  17. Agree that this is fantastic - this one and his Blumenkraft album are right at the top of the chill-out heap for me...
  18. Well how much $ does an artist usually get per copy? I just said $5 per copy to make an illustration - I have no idea if that's correct.... I still don't see how these people are making a living - do psytrance artists usually have another job or something?
  19. Damn, 1000 copies doesn't seem like many... The artist is only making a % of the retail price right? So if they make $5 per copy sold that would only be like $5000 total - not really enough to make it a living... This is why I don't understand why people say so-and-so are "selling-out" - like all the old goa acts that came out with their version of "full-on" - if they're only selling like 1000 copies what difference does it make - they're not gonna get rich and famous that way anyhow... Does this make sense to anyone?
  20. Right on, no I'm not losing sleep over it - it's more that when I read a review and someone says "this is full-on", I'd like to know sort of what that means... If it just has a rolling bassline to make it different why would people dislike it so much? The old-school goa bassline are often completely boring IMO - they often don't even have a bassline, it's just a kick drum sound, and generally that same "oonch oonch oonch oonch" sounding kick drum at that...
  21. Hi there, what do you mean by "dry" psy? I listened to the samples on saikosounds and it didn't sound that catchy to me - lots of sound effects, lots of layers, but all sort of sterile and lacking personality... Don't think I heard any melodies...
  22. Okay I had it explained to me once before - but what is the difference between "full-on" and non-goa style psytrance? It has to do with the bassline and kick being very prominent or something? I get the impression that full-on means simpler music, less layered and psychedelic - sort of an in-between from club trance-psytrance The thing is, I don't think I like the full-on, but what I REALLY don't like is a lot of the classic goa, with that obnoxious and relentless kick/bass and the tinny, high-pitched melodies - think Pleiadians IFO or Astral Projection - it's just too fast and unchanging for me, too driving... Classic goa always sounds so "frantic" - thats the way I would characterize it, so urgent and rushing ahead... So I'm trying to think what I DO really like, and that is a lot of what I call "psytrance" - stuff like Hallucinogen, Logic Bomb, Sandman, Koxbox (before the most recent album), Hux-Flux (before the most recent album), Infected Mushroom (before the most recent album), Nystagmus, Reefer Decree... What is Infected Mushroom "Classical Mushroom" considered in terms of genre, for instance? That's not full-on is it? I know it's not what I would call classic goa... What is it about "full-on" excatly that people don't like (if they don't)?
  23. What I want to know is how many copies do most well-known/hyped psytrance albums sell? Like say for the new Ticon, or Reefer Decree, or Mantrix albums? Do these people make enough off sales to call it a living? Are we talking 500 copies or like 30,000? How about for the Shpongle or Infected Mushroom albums? I have no idea how popular psytrance is or how many copies an album usually sells....
