  1. The parade we have here in Rio generates a lot of tourism and the parade itself is a multi-million $$ business. I'd say it is bigger than Mardi Gras, but the concept of the party is a lot different. The parade takes place in the Sambódromo (Samba-dome sort-of), with people singing, dancing etc while the participants walk down the alley... Mardi Gras is just a lot of people around NOrleans, lots of music, people out on the balconies of houses, apartment complexes, etc.. Ladies flashing their tits in exchange for beads/necklaces.. In Brasil you will only see tits and the semi-naked ladies on this parade. In the USA you should see them around town.. only flashing their tits, no bikinis or stuff that you see in Brazil. I would come to the parade in Rio if I was 40+ years old, whilst the party in New Orleans is for people 18-30...
  2. That's in New Orleans. We have Carnaval here in February hehehe. I guess that's what you're talking about. BUT... There's Universo Paralello (28th Dec - 4th Jan) www.universoparalello.art.br There should be 2 trance festivals during Carnaval. - Solaris Festival www.solarisfestival.art.br - Trance Formation There should be lots of other parties and festivals from December through February. Check this website out www.baladaplanet.com.br
  3. Do you guys know the name of one of their tracks - I believe it's unreleased, or sort of 'new', they played it at Sonica - ... It has a nice melody.. with lyrics.. Erez sang it (ouch!).. I only remember one word.. and it is.. "reeeeeeeeeeeason..." I'd like to get this track. If anyone knows the name.. give a shout.
  4. By the way.. I'm gonna download all those remixes to check 'em out.. haha I'd like to hear a remix of Dee Lite's Groove's in the Heart. That's a hell of a track! Fantastic Funky Groove.. I only have good memories of my child hood listening to that!
  5. Psysex vs Slider ? I love remixes 1200 Micrograms - Rock Into the Future -> The Police's Message in the Bottle, no? And there's a Paranormal Attack remix of a brazilian band called Planet Hemp... song is called "Mantenha o Respeito". I fucking love it haha
  6. Holy shit.. haha do people have bad trips if they're on acid? I think I'd rather listen to pop-GMS or Carl Cox Got any tracks on mp3 I could have access to? My MSN is rafaelabreu@hotmail.com, my Skype (resume sending..) is badtripper Thanks
  7. I meant try picking 3 tracks that have some connection in their melodies/percussion/kicks... Picking the songs for a set could help a lot all the mixing that should be done, and I'm not talkin about making it easier simply, but making it more homenegeous, better-sounding and keeping the dance flowing on the floor. Party up!
  8. I just bought my equipment a month ago. I'd rather spend more on the MIXER than on the CDJs if cash was a problem. I mean, the cash you save on a CDJ-800 vs the CDJ-1000, spend on the DJM-600 mixer. The Behringer VMX-300 - I bought that one also - is good indeed. I recommend it - it's a very very good deal. Try this store www.DJGear.com which is the same as www.sixstardj.com I bought 2 CDJ-100 1 VMX-300 mixer 1 Technics RP-DH1200 It cost 808 USD + 52 USD Next-Day air shipping. I already am bitching about the pitch resolution on the CDJ-100s, but oh well. I didn't think the learning curve was so steep when you spent a couple of hours a day practicing. I'd get 2 CDJ-800 + DJM-600 + Technics headphone Happy spinning
  9. Not talking about goths. Let them be. It was more of a bad-joke than a statement. And 'intelligent' for me is "I like this music so I listen to it. You like that music, you listen to it. We don't bash others music tastes, but we share our opinions." Intelligent is listening to what you enjoy without shutting your ears to other music you have barely ever listened to Party on!
  10. Try picking 3 tracks that go with each other. Work hard, but work smart, come on.
  11. Hmmm arrogant name? Was it created by those full-of-shit music cults who like Portishead, never go out in the sun, wear dark clothes and sit in the corner of an empty room with a single lamp and an old fashioned boom box to listen to it? IF they haven't slit their wrists after the first track, of course.
  12. - . Full On Twisted Psychedelic Trance -> Delirious, GMS, Astrix's style - . Surfing Punkrock Ska Hardcore- NOFX, No Use For a Name, Less Than Jake, Blink 182 - . Hip Hop - Eminem and LL Cool J + Run DMC - . A Capella - Bob McFerrin, some choirs - . Voice + Accoustic Guitar - thaz for the ladies hahaha Definetely try something like "minimal full-on with hip-hop influences". I love frestyling. "You'll be illinnnnnnn'"
  13. You add some countries like Liechenstein which's population is small than my city in Rio de Janeiro, but you don't add Brazil... Have a bigger globalized view, come on
  14. I read over 10 interviews with IM and they said they didn't produce "Psychedelic trance". They called themselves music producers, musicians. Those interviews date from 2000 to 2004. As for their goal they wanted to create a unique style for every album they release, pushing music forward. They wanted to be known as great duo, not a great "psytrance" or "electronic music" act. They don't want to be labeled for one style. Infected Mushroom have the skills, the experience, the knowledge AND the courage to - I wouldn't say improve - change their productions from one style to another. And I must admit they have been successful with all albums. In the beginning they were the symbol of psychedelic trance - you all have compliments for those old-school albums - perhaps some very interesting goa-sounding trance as well. With "I'm the Supervisor" they attracted another different crowd with tracks every new-psy-listener knows - Cities of the Future, Supervisor, Muse Breaks, etc -. The new IM could have created a new crowd. They brought to the "trance scene" people who never listened to Psytrance even if you guys are claiming they don't play psytrance anymore. I experienced this. At least in Brazil that's how it goes. I admire IM for many reasons. When older fans (or ex-fans!) were criticizing them on their website's forum for moving to Los Angeles, calling them sell-outs they answered they couldn't be blamed for wanting to improve their music, living closer to the biggest music consumer market in the world to produce with the best musicians in the world. What power is that people have to judge musicians and call them sell outs because they want to test their music and get approval from all kinds of listeners? I'd be glad if I released 10 albums and I got 10 different crowds approval... But hey, that's just me PS: Yes, the singing @ Sonica was a complete pile of shit. Out of tune, bad voice style - didn't fit the songs -, and exagerated repeating "I Wish"'s words for like.. 10 loops. But it's the live act that really seems to have some live aspects to me because of the live synths/melody and improvising. If it wasn't for the vocals and the excessive guitar I'd give it a A+. Beautiful. And no, I wasn't on any drugs. Don't be a hater!!! And I'd like to add another thing: I'd be very excited to listen to an album produced by psytrance acts and with some hip-hop scratching DJ artist. I'm a music fan and I'd like to see pro musicians get some James Brown or Aretha Franklin grooves added to 2Pac, Eminem and Infected Mushroom or Infected Mushroom. Not sure if it could sound good, but hey, wouldn't you guys at least want to listen to it.. just out of curiosity?
  15. @ Mylo I do agree with you. But I still believe a pro DJ wouldn't take long at all to find the speed of 2 songs. Another point I'd like to talk about is discussed on the thread below - General forum - http://www.psynews.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=27693 Thanks for all the comments. Healthy discussion Play hard, mister DJs!!
  16. Could you say a bit more about that? I have no idea what IDM/neo-industrial or Bleeps mean. Thanks
  17. I'd change the "good" to "most experienced". I believe it's related to how long a person has been listening to e-music, not about taste. Perhaps you agree, just wrote differently. My DJ brother is 33, his DJ friends are around same age and what they say to me is that psytrance (as in the artists performing right now in Brazil and IN MOST BIG FESTIVALS around Europe) is just the access to electronic music in general because it is very appealing: a less-demanding crowd who wants to dance and trip. People who simply want to have fun, not really worrying "if this track was.. " or "if that song would be like.. " or even what artist is performing. I listened to House way before psytrance and the first psy party I went to was my first time I took ecstasy. I believe I started listening to it with "different ears". And even though I rarely take any drugs nowadays I still enjoy all the crazy dancing and hysteria a lot Yes, you are right and I know house is more minimal. But my post was more like "will psytrance producers [not talking about Goa] develop their styles to a point where songs will have a better construction so as to fit OTHER tracks ending up being easily introduced into a consistent DJ set?" Progressive is very different. I'll give Emok a try Sorry if I offended you. But I believe there's room for suave, smooth psytrance DJ Sets. Period. Groovy stuff! Don't you think listeners of progressive trance have been listening to trance for a longer period of time? Did you listen to GMS, Infected & Crew when you first got into psy? That's me right now, but I got an older e-music (in general) background. That's why I am moving faster into progressive trance, some ambient/chill-out music. I spent as much time on the chill out @ Sonica as I did on the main floor.
  18. I'm new to this 'scene' (I hate this denomination). And I love it and I wanna know what others have to share about their perceptions. In my opinion House/Techno DJs perform way better than psytrance pros. I believe psy-DJs create more volatile energy on the dance floor while house-music keeps the mood going at a very sound level. You watch Sasha and Digweed versus the top 'on the spot light' psychedelic names. Then you compare Mau-Mau and Mr. Cox with Growling Mad Scientists, Infected Mushroom or Astrix.. Carl Cox mixes 3-4 songs within ONE 'track' for the crowd. 5-Minute-long multi-song-mixes, switching from one to another and the crowd is listening to 'one amazing' track when there's actually a lot going on behind the decks. Astrix explodes the dance floors with one of his hits. Other e-music styles use bold and solid componenents throughout a track while psytrance abuses hysteria and mood-eruptions. Felix Da Housecat exploded Club Privilege, in Búzios - Rio, with a paced and deeper sound. And in Rio we DO NOT have an 'experienced' e-music crowd. Mylo used his "Drop the pressure" consistent now-mainstream tune to take ladies' breaths away at Skol Beats in São Paulo. Serge used his solid no-synth-remix of Alter Ego's Rocker to involve thousands of people @ the same SP's Skol Beats. Chris Liebing followed him with commenced energy on the groovy-floor. I've never seen such thing through Psytrance (I'm a newbie listener... started in Aug last year). I have this feeling that Psytrance projects only achieve the same effects on the crowds with hit songs, not with great ability to mix hours of research, knowledge, incredible productions, great equipment features, feeling and experience. The only time I saw a psytrance DJ keep the crowd anxious for the next beat of a song was while listening to Astrix's medley of 4 different songs (GMS, Infected and 2 of his own productions), but that too sounded pre-made. A house-crowd seems to be more picky than the young psy-lovers. And that you can see through the artists. Psytrance abuses of highs, climaxes, turn arounds and I've never seen a psytrance DJ play an entire set without breaking the dance-mood at least once. It's hard to blend different psy artists to form a homogeneous set, whilst you ONLY see this with house music's greatests. At the psy parties and festivals I've been to in Brazil and at the Sonica festival in Italy this August I noticed that the crowd usually gets fired up when they listen to HITS. Songs that should pump the crowd up no matter what time, where or by whom they're played. The psytrance sets I've listened to often serve as 'background music' for people to have a chat on the dance floor or as burning-house chaos with loads of people going absolutely insane. At house events I've been to it is all different.. The crowd never goes so crazy, movements are measured, more sensual and anxiety is often in the eyes of the dancers waiting for a minute for this same note to be repeated and then releasing a minimal change that - YES! - will free them to let their body loose, raise their arms, smile and shout elegantly. I'd compare house music with champagne in Paris and psytrance to cold beer at a football match. Each one has its majesty - kings or crowd pleasing strikes, lovers - elegant royalty or hippies. Psytrance relates to nature and bare feet. The other relates to tradition and control. Nose up or down, what is your perception of different styles of electronic music? PS: I hope I wasn't too boring or anything. PS2: I prefer to go insane with psytrance and to chill in the air conditioner with quality House. With a beer, of course.
  19. It's hard for me to understand that a DJ with more than 2-years experience - I'm talking about a person practicing at least 10 hours/week - would NEED such thing. My brother is a house DJ - has been for 10+ years - and he mixes songs in no time.. He let the channel open and before you notice the beats climbing over each other VOILA! they're there... He changed them beasts into a broken beat that sounded actually groovy or something. And he does that while getting the crowd to move with big smiles on their faces, arms up, whistling and shouting. It's amazing to see how House DJs perform way better than psytrance - In my opinion - pros. You go watch Sasha and Digweed versus the top 'on the spot light' psychedelic names. Then you compare Mau-Mau, Mr. Cox.. They mix 3-4 songs within ONE 'track' for the crowd. Minutes-long mixes, switching from one to another and the crowd is listening to 'one amazing' track when there's actually a lot going on. I've never seen such thing through Psytrance (I'm a newbie listener... started in Aug last year). Felix Da housecat exploded Club Privilege in Búzios - Rio with a unique sound. A house-crowd seems to be more picky than the young psy-lovers. And that you can see through the artists. Psytrance abuses of highs, climaxes, turn arounds and I've never seen a psytrance DJ play for an entire set without breaking the dance-mood at least once. This is way off-topic. I'm gonna paste some of this - with changes - in another thread. I'm new to this 'scene' (I hate this denomination), I love it and I wanna know what others have to share about their perceptions.
  20. That's what I wanted to hear. hahaha I studied enough math to get my engineering degree. I'd like to FEEL it a bit more instead of calculating it all from now on Right on, dude!
  21. Do you guys who use the 0.7% pitch-scale mix songs from 120-135 BPM as well? How succesfull are you in doing so? If you're in great hurry for a kick-ass party you'll be playing at and you have just bought a CD and there's no time to write down it's BPM.. you still able to play the track perfectly at a party? I think I am more or less measuring the ability of those "0.7%-DJs" to do the job. I know a lot of just-born-DJs who use it, but I don't know any old-school DJs who use it. Got it?
  22. Why wouldn't it work with other CD Decks? A 0.7% increase means a 0.7% increase. Shouldn't matter on the player. I think if it doesn't work on other players - even if it's there saying 0.7% change - the player is fond of the trash bin. I wouldn't buy such equipment.
  23. Below's the list of the BPMs and the % on the pitch bend you need to change to achieve a 1 BPM in songs speed. BPM % to change 1 BPM 137 0.73% 138 0.72% 139 0.72% 140 0.71% 141 0.71% 142 0.70% 143 0.70% 144 0.69% 145 0.69% 146 0.68% 147 0.68% 148 0.68% What I hear most young not-pro-but-I-they-think-they're-very-good DJs say is that 'there's no mystery.. it's all math'. This one dude I know writes the BPMs for all tracks on his case so when he gets in front of a Pioneer CDJ (usually what's available around here) all he does is 'do the math'. I would say nowadays, with music being produced mostly on softwares such as Cubase, Logic, Live, Reason and others producers would probably just go for round numbers for the tracks' tempos. Anyway.. I hope other DJs give me extra-hints/opinions regarding this. And yes - I am sure after a lot of practice and experience it shouldn't take long to get tracks on the same tempo.. I see my brother doing it and it takes just a few seconds. Very classy Thanks
  24. A friend of mine who plays quite okay only uses multiples of 0.7% pitch steps to beat match psytrance. I find it quite amateur, but at the same time it does work for him. I know the math.. etc.. But I'd like to know: Do the DJs here use that too? You beat-match using your ears only? You beat-match using multiples of 0.7% only? Do you sometimes take the multiples as a guide to get to the right pitch a bit faster? My brother has been a DJ for 15 years and he laughed when I told him my friend DJed using that and I sort of agree because I think music is more than math.. I'm starting to learn now that I bought the equipment. So.. opinions? Thanks
  25. Today I TRIED to sign up for NOFX 7" Club, but there wasn't the "BRAZIL" option in the country select box!! What a pitty! I emailed them asking.. they have freaken Burkina Faso (nothing against Burkinators), but no Brazil. NOFX 7" Club is a mailing list that will delive one 7" every month during entire 2006! One NOFX track every month... that's a dream I'll be checking the mail monthly for a state-of-the-art punkrock song! Thumbs up for NOFX and Fat Wreck Chords!!!
