To be honest I'm not really surprised. If an artist is doing the promo for a record label, he has to pay for it off his own back - and there isn't really any money in promos in our scene as it is so small. Labels have trouble breaking even as it is.
-
Because music is subjective - you might think that only one or two good tracks are on there, but another might think the entire work is great.
-
You're lazy.

Steve Roach - Arrival (and also try the album Empetus which that is off)
-
I used 'effort' because the sound didn't catch me, it sounded MIDI-ish. Don't get me wrong, the musical talent is there, it's just that the sounds don't carry the music as well as they should. That's all.

Thinking of getting Reason 3.0
Shaft replied to Shaft's topic in Music Making and Production/Industry
Okay fair enough. Though tiny little differences in clarity don't really mean much to me, I'm just a composer really. Also it's good that it's optimised for CPU usage, because I only have a 1.25Ghz Mac Mini -
Sure, videogame music has come a long way, it's now a pretty good field to work in - they have awards for it too I think now! As to the track... It's a nice piece of work! I especially like the orchestra sounds at around 1.20 - perhaps percussion could use a little more reverb/delay? Sounds kinda MIDI-ish - work on your effects. Nice use of a harpsichord(?) later on... I like the variation in this track. Nice effort, and looking forward to more from you!
-
Birds! Of course! Thanks a lot, that's I think what is missing in this piece. I'll throw out the digital effect I think, I don't particularly like the digitalness of it hehe... Perhaps some water effects, or rain or something? Natural sounds?

Thinking of getting Reason 3.0
Shaft replied to Shaft's topic in Music Making and Production/Industry
Reason 3.0 introduces the M-Class Mastering Suite... Besides I couldn't give a crap about little eqs and stuff like that, all I can care about it is level and panning. I just feel that it is the MUSIC that I produce that I have to concentrate on, not all the little 'limiters' and 'eqs' and 'compressors' and stuff... Besides if I need my tracks mastered there's always mastering engineers to make my tracks sound better, right? -
Yeah, I'm going to try adding more effects. I might replace the 'digital' sound (is that the one that comes in at 4:15?) - phobium said it was a little 'harsh' sounding. So I might just come up with one less harsher, hehe. Airy swooshes are what I was thinking... maybe little 'blips' and 'zaps' that pan across the speakers? Patience please! I'll have a think about it but as I take too long to actually make tracks that I'm happy to distribute then I'm not sure. But thanks for the offer.
-
Ugh, I wouldn't endure a 5 hour coach journey even if it was a quid!
-
Some won't like that!
-
I'd like to, but I only really have enough money until my first payslip. Plus the train to London will be probably £50 So I can't go unfortunately!
-
Fair enough, last time I checked it was 20K. But seriously, do you really think that the majority of the psy scene sells that many records?
-
There's a lot less money in psytrance than there is in commercial pop. Read this: http://arts.guardian.co.uk/netmusic/story/...1385687,00.html ...Although sales of vinyl and CD singles declined again by 14% to 26.5m last year, more than 5.7m downloads were sold during the year. Peter Jamieson, the BPI's chairman, said: "We have already announced that downloads will soon be included in the official UK singles chart and had downloads been included in the singles figures for 2004, the market would have shown a 4% increase." Chart compilers are planning to include download sales within the main chart by the middle of the year. In the final week of 2004, more than 312,000 single downloads were sold compared with 282,000 high street sales, marking the first time the digital format has outsold the physical one. Are You Shpongled? has sold around 20,000 copies. And that's one of the biggest selling albums of our genre.
-
Can you remember any such incidents when the label concerned WASN'T Twisted Records but was another psy label?
-
Yes, I was thinking the same myself but I wasn't sure so I didn't post that. Yes, a LOT less money. Because the scene is a lot smaller = less people going to the venue = less ticket sales = less money all round.
-
What music are you listening to right now?
Shaft replied to Sputum Rotgut's topic in General Psytrance
Asura - Land & Freedom -
My 172.4 BPM killargh didn't make it through...
-
Entheogenic and Chill Tribe?
-
What you have to understand is Twisted Records is in a VERY SMALL minority of psytrance labels that are actually successful (and therefore can afford to pay out more to the artists etc). I doubt that Simon recieves £10,000 for his live act.

Interacting Music Making Thread
Shaft replied to Psychocell's topic in Music Making and Production/Industry
1) What programs you use, and any hardware instruments, midi controllers, etc (PC Specs too)? Garageband 2.0, Reason 3.0, Audacity, M-Audio Keystation 49e. Mac Mini 1.25Ghz with 512MB RAM. I want a nice control surface soon... Maybe when I get my payslip! 2) On average, how long does it take you to build and finish a Song? Dunno, depends on my mood. 3) Which parts do you find tedious when building your track (if any), if it pattern sequencing, automation, etc? Nothing, I love my music. I tend to alternate between tracks to keep my ideas fresh. 4) Where did the inspiration come from to start producing music? It was always there, I just love music! 5) AND Your favourite style to produce? Rich, lush pads melting into each other - just sitting there and holding pads for ages makes up most of my time, never actually seem to sequence anything! (That's ambient... hehe) And check out my track in the Music Promotion forum, it's full length. -
I know you're not, I'm working on some more rhythmical stuff, don't worry. Thanks Hm... I like the way they blend into each other, you know? Give it a proper listen and tell me what you think.
-
I'm feeling a little generous. This track was made a few months back in Garageband 2.0. The track is very minimal, I wanted the focus on the pads for emotion. There is a synth line at the very end, so please give the track patience, it kinda 'unfolds'... I suppose the style is ambient but it's more than that... IDM? Not sure on the genre placement here. It's just a sad piece... Bitrate quality is low... Mastering is very poor, I need to work on that... I just want you guys to hear some of my full length tracks now and then. Now I'm working in Reason so the tools I have at my disposal are more than enough for my creative needs - so expect some nicer things in the future (and hopefully an album ONE DAY... hehe) Upload by YouSentIt - I'll upload again if you need more downloads. Thanks http://s29.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=390OIYV...470UPVIFL1UIQUH Any input is very much appreciated, thank you for your time.
