One thing that could be worh checking is if increasing the latency will help. I also get clicks when using the lowest latency settings for my pulsar. There could also be something that needs tweaking in your windows setup. A page with some advice about audio specific tweaks is: http://www.musicxp.net/tuning_tips.php At least make sure to go thru that list. Logic is fuzzy about the system configuration and can run like shit if you have a complety untweaked system. And I would recommend to use version 5.5.1, the latest and last PC version.

I can just say that from my experience the kind of acid flashbacks I heard about where people should experience the road open up to a psychedelic mess of fractals never happened to me. And I ate my fair share. The anti acid propagamda would like you to belive they should occur, but I have yet to meet someone who really had an uncontollable flashback. If you are in a mood to try to get into a psychedelic state of mind you seem to be able to get a sense of previous experiences though.

I must say that I personally don't care at all about artwork whatsoever. When I buy music I want good music. Art i can buy separatly if I had perticular interest about that. @kooolaid Some good ideas you have, but can be difficult to get shpongle to prerelease with a download site. And subscription services can be harder to sell than downloads, but for sure could be good as a complement. I must say I cannot make much sense about playlouder, what do they do, and how do they make any profit by offering free downloads? -
I like them mostly for basses, like in most of the old tip stuff. Otherwise Highscore Xor -True Freedom spring to mind as one great 303 track. Some of the earlist stuff with 303...before acid music even existed was frontline assembly. Can't recall now what tracks in specific, but quite inspiring stuff worth checking out for some ways to make more original sounding lines. Most of the time they can have a tendency to destroy perfectly good tracks many times. Like the Juptier 8000. Could IMO been a very great and refreshing album, but the 303's really get to me and I can't really stand it.

The best ones AFAIK is waves IDR and apogee. The IDR is built in to the L2 and L3 and is surely the most commonly used ones. Just put the waves limiter on the "hi-res CD master" preset and render the track as 16 bit.

I think people hate DRM not so much from practical reasons. Of course it is a fear that a protected file will cause technical difficulties for they way people want to use the file, but my guess is that people also do not like to feel distrusted. And if they know do want to spend money on something that can get for free they can feel intimidated that they now should have to settle with a inferior format when they do that. Because DRM will not improve the product in any way for the consumer, it can only be a cause of difficulties. People do buy mp3's to try to support and to respect lables and artists, and they simply demand respect back in return as well. Many lables is still hesitant to allow shops to sell downloads though. If using a DRM system will help you convince a couple of extra lables that feel like that to get rid of thier paranoia it still will be no use if you do not get people to buy the downloads anyway. You just have to do your best to try to convince the labels that their fears is really unfounded I think Everything released is readily available in P2P networks and it really will make no difference at all if someone would take a copy downloaded from your site and add that to the 100's of copies of the release already there to be downloaded. Belive me, I tried to spread the resonantearth releases in filesharing networks, but people prefer to download a release from a well known release group, so it was not until mycel made a release they became widespread. Hopefully the labels will become more realistic about how they relate to downloads very soon, but it's still not a big business so until it takes off a bit more many will probably remian in a state of ignorance. I can recommend to read this article about downloading and filesharing in general: http://danbricklin.com/recordsales.htm That is containing quite a bit of facts that often seem to be overlooked when labels discuss downloading in a way that make you belive that every downloaded copy is a lost sale. I made a post in isratrance about the future of the trance industry in specific in hope of getting a discussion with some of the many labels that frequent that forum. http://forum.isratrance.com/viewtopic.php/...c/54861/forum/1 No label have replied yet, so they do not seem to be very interested in the future, but if there is a post about how to bring down a site that links to downloads of their music it fills up quickly with many label managers spewing out their discontent. All the features on resonantearth is custom made for the site by me. If you are interested in getting a similar solution together mail or PM me and we can discuss if I can be of help. -
Compressor for pumping bass
Spindrift replied to yaroo's topic in Music Making and Production/Industry
In my ears compressing everything and too much is the most common mistake that fresh producers do. I rearely compress even kick and bass, and only compress leads if needed becasue i have problem controlling dynamics in a sound if for example the synth design make the level vary to much when doing filter sweeps. My favoured compressor for obvious and pumping results is Sonic Timeworks - Compressor X -

Belive me, people can get hold of illegal copies if they like, wheather you use DRM or not. If you look a bit at your competitors, I cannot see one that usews DRM or WMA. I think most people would prefer shops without DRM and with regular Mp3's. So I can bet you that you would get very low sales if you go down that route. And £1.50 per track is very expensive. Again I would sure go for a shop that sells for $1. People do not want to pay $15 for a downloaded album. Infact most shops have album discounts, so many of you competitors will sell for half the price of what you plan to do. I would really reccommend that you have a better look at the market and try to consider why it looks like it does, and think about why people should pay double the amount to get a format that they don't like with a protection system they despise. But I love SA trance as well and hope you get some more of that stuff out to the public. -

In my experience artists is more relaxed about copyright issues than many other people in the scene. It's mostly label owners and some fans that I see flaming anyone questioning the current copyright legislation. I think you understand that a dictionary is a bit different than a site selling mp3's without paying to the artists. But an interesting thing to consider can be that compiling information could and almost should be considered similar to create the information in the first place from a copyright perspective. My view on someone selling mixes they make, regardless of if it's made from mp3's or bought CD's, is different. It takes skill and effort to compile both a mix or collection of tracks well just as with creating a lexicon. So for me thats a whole different issue than simply taking all material you can find and make money from it without passing anything on to the people who actually provided the information in the first place. That is only pure parasitism in my view. -

@basilisk It's not a matter of how much bandwidth you have really. If people put large files on the web they zip it. It's just ridicoulus to send totally uncompressed files over the net, it's wasting bandwidth for everyone. So, like I tried to tell you before, I think you should consider looking for shops that sell FLAC or APE files instead. That will be they way music is distibuted in the future I am pretty certain. More people actually seem to want FLAC already now from what I have been able to gather. So to sell wav would be crazy since you then need to provide both FLAC for people who think it's stupid to spend 50% more time and bandwidht to recive the same file as well as wav for poele who can't be asked to download a 200k decompression utility to avoid downloading 100's of Mb for no reason. @redeemer I like your spirit. But I do really think it's low to sell ripped music or cracked software and cannot understand your opinion. And I don't care what russian law says about it. -

I don't really disagree with your very controverisal opinion, and is not very bothered with the money side of the music myself I must admit. But how hard is it really to download whatever music you like to get in mp3. I do get upset when anyone is actually is making money on other peoples work. Sites like allofmp3 should not be supported because they make money on something that is not theirs to make money on. So by all means support downloading and fuck the "industry". But sites selling mp3 or warez is scum in my opinion. -

Well, the release I listened to was from 2001, but sounded more like something from 94 or so. Maybe I would prefer their stuff from 93 I would guess, becuse in my experience it would maybe feel more authentic and not consciously trying to recreate a vibe but rather be part of that vibe. From what I understand they used to be part of dimension 5 before, which I rmember hearing a bit, and I can't say it's my favourite group from the olden days. But i will try to listen to them again properly and see if I get along with them better than the RA release I tried (to sirius): -

I wonder if that meas that according to russian law they can sell the downloads without permission from respective labels. I have really hard to see how they would have convinced any labels to allow them to sell albums for $2, and they seem to have a lot. Still I must maintain that it's not a realistic mark for pricing now in the trance scene, and if you would try I can assure you that you would end up with an extremly limited assortment. It would be great if it was possible and maybe would be good financially even to make people actually buy some downloads. But trying to get any labels to accept that price is far away IMO. -

Well, we do not have to have the same idea about what is good advice because we both have experience. I really mean it whit the "fake it til you make it" advice, and that is approach I use myself when trying to deal with something I do not have much experience with. So for me it IS a lot easier if I think that it is easy to sit down and do something rather than getting daunted by it. Thats all I wanted to say. And I have actually been amazed what some producers have been coming up with after only a year of experience, so talent and spirit does matter just as much as experience IMO. I'm not saying that you are wrong that it's actually quite hard to make good sounding productions, just that it might not be helpful to think about it being hard. -

@krelmatrix I not so much of a mp3 techie myself but tried to read up on it on HydrogenAudio forums which is a place where codec fanatics hang out. What I figure you have about 250k as a maximum average bitrate for VBR, and that 320k CBR should be the highest quality setting you can use. So VBR is mainly if you are really concerned with filesize. But can also have compatability issues with some harware players. From http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=203 @sherlockalien Unfortunally I do not like progressive or house myself, so that wont happen. But I heared Iboga is open ing a mp3 shop an their site soon, and they do that kind of progressive stuff what I understand. And buying directly from a label is great if you want your money to be supporting the people in the scene directly- -

I also listened to RA and just as with a lot of the other "old shool" music I think it sounds just too much like an attempt to duplicate other artists. I find that just as uncreative and copy and paste like as much full-on nowadays and cannot really understand why anyone would bother to make that music and even less how people can bother listening to it. I can listen to some compliations from the mid 90's myself sometimes but just can't stand to put on anything from the oldschool clones around now. But they sounded better and a bit more skillfully made than ypsilon 5 and filteria in my opinion still so the fans of old-school should definatly check it out I guess. Well done norway -

I was considering if I should use VBR for the tracks at resonantearth. The thing is that it is nice to be able to tell people that the tracks is encoded in 320k, which like you said is not really the case if you use VBR. There is no quality issues with 320k CBR though according to the tests I came across and my own ears, and the filesize is only marginally bigger than if you encode using highest possible VBR settings. Maybe people is more technically minded that I thought, and would be satisfied with that the files is encoded using VBR with a little explanation about that it's on highest quality settings. But for me it díd seem easier to assure people about the quality by simply being able to state that the downloads is in 320k. -

One common mistake is to think that comprseeors and EQ is the key to good sound. Be careful with using those tools, and spend more time finding sounds that sound great without treatment. Most of all finding a bass sound and kick sound that is really good as they are will help your productions a lot. Play around, try different machines, test your mixes on a wide range of systems. You should not have to worry about the mastering, just focus on getting your mixes to sound good enough without, the mastering will be done by pro's if you get a release sometime. Maybe stick the track thru a limiter after you mixed it down...but do NOT use a limiter on the master out, since that will destroy if the track should be mastered by someone else in the future. Gain structure is also a very important thing to learn. That is to ensure that the signal is a loud as possible thru the signal chain, but never peaking too loud as to make the built in limiters kick in in the sequencer or plugins you are using. Most of all I would reccommend the approach of "fake it til you make it" and don't let people like EP bring you down. Confidence will help you a lot for sure. -

Err...you think that is a legal site redeemer. The price and the russian language make me suspect that it's not at all. Anyway $2 for 100Mb is totally unrealistsic that you will be able to sell trance for and have any labels sign up with you.
