Surreal Estate (6:25) 10. Some Things Just Make You Want To Cry (5:45) Canadian electronic downtempo record label “Interchill” needs no introductions. Well known and respected for their top notch compilations and album releases by the most innovative collective of artist “133 Thursdays” by “Pushmipulyu” is no exception. “Pushmipulyu” is the brainchild of “Michael Sasson & Steve Rowlands”. Based in London and living next door to each other both the artists have been a part of the electronic music scene since the early 90’s being involved with various other groundbreaking projects and organizations. “133 Thursdays” is a result of weekly jams sessions for over 3 years and hence the quirky but apt title. “Michael Sasson” is a well know and respected industry figure being head of the Megadog and Club Dog organization, infamous for their touring parties around London and the record label “Planet Dog” that gave us the first “Eat Static” and “Banco de Gaia” album releases, and now teamed with “Steve Rowlands” of the “Full Moon Scientist” fame, “133 Thursdays” seems like a album that just cannot disappoint. I wouldn’t want to do a track by track review for this one because the music on the album is a seamless eclectic fusion of various electronic music styles with a jazz twist and a very psychedelic vibe showcasing high quality and immaculate production skills by the producers. The overall jazzy and chilled out vibe is going to find its way to some great indoor lounge experiences for the saucer eyed crew. The album reminds me a bit of the ESL catalogue and other acts that fuse psychedelic elements with jazz overtones like “Flexitones” and “Electroslide”, albeit “Pushmipulyu” have their own unique sound. All tracks are musically rich and diverse, but what I really like about the album is the relentless groove that takes one from downtempo, chilled breaks, lounge to house and back into eclectic world grooves all blended with loads of live elements like the saxophone, horns, guitars, trumpets to some crazy pianos that ride with style over choppy and groovy basslines. The percussive elements are chunky and the beat arrangements are skilled reflecting on the maturity both producers have. A special mention would be the mastering of the disc, the sound is clean and crystal clear, balancing all musical elements in a perfect manner and the urban photography that makes up the artwork for this very special disc. Anyone into fusion and eclectic music styles is going to trip on this release, hats off to Andrew and Interchill to maintain innovativeness in their releases. Interchill should be given an award or something!! Favourites – 1, 3, 6, 9 Rating – 4/5 'Decompression Chamber" link - http://blueorb.wordpress.com/2007/07/12/pu...ays-interchill/
  6. Title - Soul Vibration # 2 Label - Liquid Records Format - CD Genre - Dub, Chillout, Psychedelic Release Date - TBA Purchase at - TBA Links - http://www.liquid-records.com/ http://www.myspace.com/liquidrecordsuk http://www.triskelemanagement.com/promotion/soulvibration2/ Tracklist - 1. Terry Davey - Karin (2:37) 2. System 7 - Kupuri (Mirror System Remix) (8:23) 3. Slackbaba - Tsentak (8:12) 4. Nagual Sound Experiment - Completley Sideways (6:42) 5. Mood Deluxe - Mercury Rising (7:13) 6. Organismic - On The Air (Original Mix) (10:49) 7. Capsula - Golden Orb (8:55) 8. Phutureprimitive - Innerverse (8:06) 9. Zubzub - Inner Marine (5:14) 10.Terry Davey - Liquid Soul (2:31) The first Soul Vibration installation released in 2005 still generates a buzz and gets one into the special chillout groove with its dubby oriented psychedelic sounds. The sophomore effort by “Liquid Records” tries to push the boundaries further and present a collection of acoustic and organic sounds streaming into dub textures, showcasing an eclectic collection of tunes. The names featured on the compilation are definitely the most innovative collective of artists who come from diverse backgrounds. Phutureprimitive, Slackbaba, Naugal Sound Experiment aka Mood Deluxe, Capsula, System 7 along with a bunch of other names blend into a sonic recipe that just cannot go wrong. We begin with some mild acoustic guitars courtesy “Terry Davey” who sets the mood into a relaxed and musical atmosphere. Jet setting into 5th gear “System 7″ provides a journey across different landscapes with its world music sound, the guitars and female vocal loops add wisely to the magical atmosphere. World music at its groovy best! Track 3 “Tsentak” by “Slackbaba” is a mild dubby ride across eastern motifs that combines elements like the tabla with a ever evolving groovy bassline that stride over fx laden piano bits on a steady but phat kickdrum. Ace stuff from the Baba himself!! Next on the sonic menu is “Naugual Sound Experiment”, a highly skilled producer from Brighton better know for his alter ego “Mood Delux”, the NSE sound is glitchy, dubby, and urban, although “Completely Sideways” explores a slightly different dubby vibe being more fluid in structure with its hanging guitar loops and relaxed bassline. Keep a look out for his debut album “Invisible Moments” soon to be released by “Liquid Records”. Teleporting into a parallel world of sounds, Cameron donnes his psychedelic breakbeat avatar as “Mood Delux” and what results is “Mercury Rising”, personally tested on chillout floors this is one monster of a track with a groovy hook that drives everyone towards the dance floor, the morphing bassline combined with psychedelic ethnic vocals and acid squelches with trippy breakdowns is nothing but skilled sonic manipulation. Track 6 “On The Air” by “Organismic” puts us back on the chilled out wagon, running a distance of 10 minutes and 49 seconds and packaged within a super slick bassline along with intelligent drum programming this is just pure bliss. Top notch stuff!!! Diving further into the sonic vortex “Capsula” treats our senses with “Golden Orb”, even though it’s filled with alien synth textures with electronic blips panning in every possible direction the track manages to keeps us on Earth with its relaxed guitar strums. I always crave for new material by DJ Rain aka Phutureprimitive ever since he released his album “Sub Conscious” in 2005, “Innerverse” has a very deep spiritual vibe, and the musical content on this one is just so rich that I find it difficult to describe the emotions that Rain manages to bring forward. This is PURE MAGIC Flowing into track 9, “Inner Marine” by “Zubdub” who is a very high prolific composer from the “Ozric Tentacles” fame enlightens us with a light and atmospheric dubby track with flutes within electronic textures. Neat stuff but nothing really groundbreaking. Ending the sophomore odyssey by Liquid Records is “Terry Davey”, who allows our senses to rewind back to the beginning of the compilation with his beautiful acoustic guitar. A perfect end to a perfect beginning! All I’ll say is Liquid Records never fails to deliver the best electronic music that bends and breaks genres; I would even dare to say that SV2 has reaffirmed my faith in the chillout scene. Soul Vibration # 2 is a sonic bassline treat that’s going to appeal to fans of varied electronic music genres and would definitely be a success across the globe. The “Liquid Crew” is full of positive vibes and I wish them nothing but success for all their musical ventures. 7. Title - Digital Chamatkar Label - DadA Music, India Format - CD Genre - Progressive Release Date - May 2007 Purchase At - http://www.dada-music.co.in/closerproduct.asp?num=17 Artist Bio - http://www.dada-music.co.in/ArtistDet.asp?h_ArtistID=8 Tracklist - 1. Virtual Matter (8:04) [120] 2. Electrical Signals (7:27) [124] 3. Altered States (7:05) [132] 4. Civil Rights Issue (7:26) [128] 5. Its Very Important (8:05) [138] 6. Mind Expansion (8:31) [139] 7. Cosmic Intervention (9:21) [142] 8. Happy Life (10:32) [144] 9. Open Eyes (7:27) [146] India’s own Ambient & Progressive label ‘dadA Music’ is back with vengeance creating sonic manipulations in the form of ‘Kalyug - Digital Chamatkar’. “Kalyug” is the progressive alter ego of one of the labels co-founder ‘Sattyananda aka Nikhel Kumar Mahajan’ who released his ambient album ‘Internal Activities’ last year. Nikhel draws inspiration from ancient Indian Hindu mythology and has deep rooted spiritual beliefs. Kalyug is the fourth and final era in the spiritual evolution of man. According to Hindu mythology the four ages of the world are: The Krita Yug - 4800 years : The Treta Yug – 3600 years : The Dwapara Yug – 2400 years and KALYUG – 1200 years. Getting the intro out of our way allow me to guide you through the tracks. Opening the album is ‘Virtual Matter’, a chilled breakbeat tune which after a eerie heavily distorted vocal sample and metallic flute sounds makes way for the beat to set in, the grooves laid back and chilled out with sharp and acid synthlines. The track has some great potential of finding its way into the chillout floors. A great start! ‘This is your last chance after this there is not turning back’, ‘Electrical Signals’ has a bass that gets one into the groove in an instant, teamed with a muffled heavy kick drum and running at just 124 BPM this ones pure psychedelic progressive music with a very very phat groove. A great tune with a lovely, easygoing vibe. I love the way the kick drum sets in nearly after a minute followed by a slick groovy bassline on ‘Altered States’ along with sloshed pads, really dreamy melodies and electronic drones flying in all directions. Hypnotic trance inducing material for sure! Love the shotgun bassline that sets in after around 4.30 mins. Continuing with the tradition of using psychedelic samples to begin a track, we see drop in the rising tempo on ‘Civil Rights Issue’, the track has gentle melodies and clever arrangement of samples that justify the track name, ending in a twisted synth-flute frenzy which works like a charm. ‘It’s very Important’ begins with Albert Hoffman quote “It’s very important that’s one is prepared for the use of psychedelics, its not just fun it’s a very serious experiment”, which we even find printed on the cds inner sleeve. With a rolling bassline running relentlessly at 138BPM giving the track a very fullon sound or I could describe this as ‘progon’. The laid back grooves back with ‘Mind Expansion’, we are greeted by tribal percussion, tabla bits and processed female vocal chats that keeps delving along the length of the track. This could work great for those progressive open air experiences. ‘Cosmic Intervention’ is difficult to describe, the track has a very old skool goa trance vibe running along the sythlines while the layering is pure progressive, overall this ones probably my favourite 135bpm plus track on the disc. ‘Happy Life’ as the name would suggest is sunrise music with very melodious and sharp synthlines, the melodies here like the previous track emit a very old skool goa trance vibe that’s refreshing to hear these days due to the overflow of mediocre fullon sounds. ‘Open Eyes’ takes its own time to build up and move from a broken beat to a full throttle frantic pace with a rolling bassline and some funky hi-hats that sets in only after 4 and half minutes. This is the perfect way to end the groovy and uplifting acid ridden journey. The music on ‘Digital Chamatkar’ is varied, groovy and evolving with a lot of cleverly used ethnic instruments ranging from flutes, sarangi, and sitar to Indian classical music chats by talented vocalists that are omnipresent in a very subtle way which clearly define the roots of the producer. A special mention would be the extensive used of psychedelic samples which makes the album a conceptual idea that explores alternate realities and the effects of psychedelics, not trying to glamorize them but to highlight the limitless mind expansion possibilities they offer. I tend to like the slower tracks more that have a massive groove. Nikhel has come a very long way and ‘Digital Chamatkar’ is just the beginning for bigger things for a producer with immense talent. The packaging is great with some awesome psychedelic artwork and comes complete with the ‘Parental Advisory - Explicit Material’ warning on the back. 8/10 Favourite Tracks - 1,2,3,6,7,9
  8. @yeti yes 'Cyantium Flower' would be my pick too :-)
  9. Title - Infinite Garden Label - Virtual Reality Music Format - CD Genre - Ambient, Minimal Release Date - 2006 Purchase At - http://www.psyshop.com/shop/CDs/vwr/vwr1cd002.html Links - http://www.v-i-r-t-u-a-l-w-o-r-l-d.com/ Tracklist - 1 Vale (13:23) 2 Elvish Tea (2:26) 3 Utoia (10:04) 4 Luminessence (3:34) 5 Aeolian Woods (1:54) 6 Mozaic Rain (2:45) 7 Sunshine Windmill (3:21) 8 Mycelium Dawn (5:31) 9 Sycamore Breeze (1:11) 10 Cyantium Flower (9:58) 11 Summerset Hill (6:25) 12 Autumn Leaves (2:41) 13 Awaken (3:05) Writing a review for Ishwara’s Infinite Garden has been tough job. I’ve had the disc for almost 2 months but I still haven’t been able to come up with a review that would do justice to the depths presented within the gentle maze of sounds. “Elve” is one of the alter egos of “Matt Hillier”, who’s know for his rich percussive ambient compositions as “Ishq” or “Ishwara”. Launched as the second release on his own label “Virtual Reality Music”, “Infinite Garden” explores a warm organic and much more minimal sound that’s meant to accompany the listener’s lucid state rather then engaging them. As the title suggests the theme of the album is a tribute to nature and all things green, prepare your senses to leave all the hustle behind and focus only on the music. To capture the true essence of the album it’s apt to ensure the surrounding one listens to the album complements the passive and relaxing mood. A track by track review is of no use here, ‘Infinite Garden’ is one cohesive unit ready to be explored. The sounds are composed of heavenly choirs, ethereal synth pads, and peaceful soundscape showcasing a mesmerising union between nature and machine along with all sorts of natural sounds from chirping birds, rain forest murmurs to sounds from the microscopic living world all fused within indistinguishable yet ingenious electronic patters reflecting on our dynamic yet structured environment. ‘Matt’ is definitely in a league of his own. ‘Infinite Garden’ is for minimal and ambient music connoisseurs and it makes me sad to think that people with a fickle mind may never be able to recognise the genius behind this release. 9/10
  10. Title - Internal Activities Label - Dada Music, India Format - CD Genre - Ambient, Chillout, Psychedelic Release Date - May 2006 Purchase At - http://www.dada-music.co.in/ http://www.psyshop.com/shop/CDs/dam/dam1cd001.html Artist Bio - http://www.dada-music.co.in/ArtistDet.asp?h_ArtistID=2 Tracklist - 01. Intro Prayer (3:59) 02. Liquid Rising (6:20) 03. Internal Activity (6:58) 04. Peace Through Inner Peace (5:57) 05. Inner Knowledge (9:06) 06. Angel (7:22) 07. Acid Logic (9:16) 08. Bhairavi Mahadev (9:16) 09. Atmospheric Tallz (8:04) 10. Space Fields (Feat. Amaan & Ayaan Ali Khan) (9:22) Yay Alright its probably not a good idea to start a review with a "Yay" but Iam really excited about this album. Excited because of recieving a CD with a stunning booklet or maybe even more excited because of the fact that India finally has its own psychedelic downbeat label to look forward to!! "Dada Music" a venture by the "India Today Group" based in Delhi presents its first release "Internal Activities" crafted by multi talented musician and one of the label founders "Sattayananda". The album intends to elevate its listeners to a higher state of consciousness where body and soul unite. All sounds revolve around creating misty and lucid atmospheres ideal for soul surfing and window gazing. Teamed with excellent production and a stunning booklet of pictures depicting various Indian locations makes the album a steal! Sattayananda chooses to start the meditative warp with a short and confusing "Intro Prayer" I expected to hear some random devnagri prayer, but instead I had to check my speaker connection till I realized the static rip, chopped and singled out beat followed by a mystic male voice were all a part of the track. A strange but unique start. Put this one on headphones and experience a sonic head massage. "Liquid Rising" is a quite and gentle maze of sounds with multi dimensional layers of temple bells, a pagan vocal hum along with sequenced electronic blips that reminds me of "staring into the abyss by shulman". We float into the next track "Internal Activity" which is a deep vortex of distant murmurs teamed with synthetic twirls of acidic sounds. "Peace through inner peace" shows the pinnacle of Sattayananda's creative genius, a minimal atmosphere scattered with strings and a funny baby gurgle somewhere in the middle. "Inner Knowledge" is a dark ambient piece with a very alien texture, a neat sci-fi soundtrack! After taking the listeners on a somewhat darkish journey with the last 2 tracks we can see the sunrise once again with "Angel", a shamanic composition with flute and sitar sounds intertwined within an electronic dimension. "Acid Logic" is the first track on the album that shows us subtle signs of beats as the track progresses from a beatless void to a very uplifting ending. "Bhairavi Mahadev" is one of my favourites on the disc, excellent percussion and intellegent use of processed male and female vocal chants fused into harmony makes this a sure winner!. "Atmospheric Tallz", the only track on the album with a steady beat is heady mix of tribal percussion and drone syths that pans ones senses in the most fluid way, another stellar composition! The last track "Space Fields" as the name suggest is a vast and magical array of sounds that makes you float within the cosmos, featuring sitar compositions by the brothers Amaan and Ayaan Ali Khan who are one of India's finest classical music composers this one really leaves one senses spangled. Its evident that "Nikhel Kumar Mahajan" has composed "Internal Activities" as an extention to his own soul, drawing inspiration from his travels across India we get a unique mix of classic and electronic that surpasses all cultural boundaries of the human mind and soul. With such a massive release "Dada Music" has definitely paved the way for psychedelic downbeat in India 8/10

  19. Title – Sub Signals Vol. 1 Label - Interchill, Canada Format – CD Genre – Dub, Downtempo Electronic Release Date - Nov2006 Tracklist – 01. The Kakatsitsi Drummers and Greg Hunter - Gbehee (A New Path) (6:00) 02. High Tone - Replay (6:02) 03. Ashtech - Earth Orbit (4:34) 04. Sub Oslo - Prisoner Of Dub (2:36) 05. Mauxuam - Jahnesh (4:36) 06. Dub Alchemist - MF Rainbow (6:22) 07. Zion Train - Free Heart (4:14) 08. Dubadelic - Secrets Of The Lost Dubplates (5:49) 09. Noiseshaper - Walls Of Silence (Gaudi Dub Remix) (3:58) 10. Creation Rebel - Space Movement - Section Two (4:02) 11. Manasseh - I-Wah (7:48) 12. Almamegretta - Insane Abduction (3:16) After releasing the massive dub compilation "Dissolving Clouds" in 2005 which still runs in my music system, Interchill Records run by Andrew Ross-Collins hailing from Canada give us their next dubby installment compiled and mixed by the master of dub "Gaudi" who needs no introduction here. I’ve had very high expectations from this compilation, each of which have been fulfilled to the max. The package comes with a warning "WOOFER ADVISORY - EXPLICIT BASS". I am sure my speakers are in for a low frequency hammering. Starting the compilation is "Gbehee (A New Path)" by "Greg Hunter" with "Kakatsitsi" who are drummers from Ghana, a mild dub track with excellent drum percussion that keeps evolving slowly but steadily, I call this pure bass therapy. Flowing smoothly into the next track "Replay" by "Hightone" from France, listeners are greeted by insane psychedelic dub in extra large doses; I must have heard this track at least around 50 times by now, a very intelligent dub masterpiece with an fx'ed rasta vocal sample that is going to leave you gasping for more. Getting our heads deeper into the woofer we have "Ashtech" which is a project by the former bass player of "Almamegretta" a Italian dub band who even contribute the last track on the compilation, once again the primary focus is on the bassline which is layered by highly psychedelic rootsy dub. The bass carries us steadily without noticing into the next track "Prisoner of Dub" by "Sub Oslo" from Texas. My head feels heavy with low frequencies vibrations already. Next track by "Mauxuam" the hard to find globe trotter and the best thing that could happen to dub music numbs my senses with spacy synths that gurgle around ones chakras. Notching the tempo just a little we have "MF Rainbow" by "Dub Alchemist" which is a project by Gaudi just cannot disappoint anyone with its phat and groovy sound that instantly pulls one into the dub orbit. Next item on the sonic therapy menu is "Zion Train who are dub veterans give us a non hectic straight up shot of a dub cocktail flavoured with Rasta vocal samples and tribal percussion that leaves one with a surreal mental buzz. "Dubadelic" who are described as "A loose gang of WordSound artist" on discogs present crawling dub groove with a complementing dark atmosphere. Next is a remix to "Noiseshaper - Walls of Silence" by "Gaudi" himself, featuring a voluptuous bassline that justifies the cover warning. As we approach the end of the compilation one is welcomed with nothing but astonishment in the form of live dub by "Creation Rebel" who are very well known in the UK for their contemporary electronic sound. Giving us our final few shots of dub is "Manasseh" who is well know for his fantastic tracks released on earlier Interchill compilations. Winding up is "Insane Abduction" by "Almamegretta" a dub band based in Italy who have crafted a absolute stunner with excellent drumming with a jazzy twist. Interchill and Gaudi have cooked us a true dub masterpiece that intricately combines acoustic and earthen musical elements with digital grooves while featuring some of the biggest names from the worldwide dub collective. The production and mastering on "Sub Signals" is simply marvelous, I can’t even imagine how nice and powerful this is going to sound on a large sound system. Beware!!! "Sub Signals" is coming to a speaker near you; any attempts to escape the bass will prove futile! Links - http://www.interchill.com/
  20. Promotional Text - Welder’s debut downtempo album combines organic broken beats with urban and world flavors. Welder has been compared to the likes of Moby and The Orb and in our view brings whole new elements of flavor to the table. This is the kind of album that you’ll grow to love the more you hear it. Artist Bio. - https://cyberset.cc/artists.php?tr_artist_id=27 Artist - Welder Title – Vines And Stream Label - Cyberset, San Francisco Format – CD Genre – Downtempo Electronic Release Date - Nov2006 Tracklist – 01. Rain (6:31) 02. Ants Are Small (3:09) 03. Purple & Orange (7:28) 04. Crosshatch (5:17) 05. Valeez (4:29) 06. In The Park (5:27) 07. Shiva (6:57) 08. Distance (5:05) 09. Find You Here (6:36) 10. Amber Dime (5:36) 11. Isle Of Skye (6:35) 12. The Heart (6:23) Vines And Stream by Welder who is also know for his House and breaks project “Eskmo” has hit me like a whiff of fresh spring breeze. The album is all about Welder’s unique fusion of world music with downtempo breaks and freestyle electronica with generous doses of psychedelia, somewhat in similar vein to albums by artists like “Flexitones” or “Deviant Electronics”. The first track “Rain” is a steadfast one with a nice groovy bass with tinkering bell sounds along with a rolling drum beat that sets the mood for rest of the album. Next track “Ants Are Small” has bought about the biggest smiles I have ever seen when I am playing, the playful orchestral sounds that keep evolving along with phat beats and some squeaky bits splattered across, a sure winner. “Purple & Orange” kicks off with a oriental gong and some Chinese instrument with lots of dirty turntable sample loops mapped onto acoustic guitar riffs with a very mystical vocal sample mentioning something about some floating object that bursts into a purple and orange aura, another winner. “Crosshatch” changes the direction to a more broken beat oriented style and once again its the groove that gets you hooked almost instantly. Next track “Valeez” has a very glitchy hiphop beat with lots of multilayered percussion. “In the park” has a industrial and urban feel with a somewhat darkish atmosphere somewhat similar to sounds by artists like “Moby” or “Enigma”, a great track anyways. I just don’t believe the quality of sounds on this album, we are half way through and each and every track till now is just pure auditory bliss. lets see what follows. “Shiva” as the name suggests is a very ethnic influenced track with broken beats that are intertwined with the Indian instrument called sitar. “Distance” maintains the ethnic effort and has a wide range of instruments like tablas, sheenai etc, another lush and exotic world beat influenced track. Nearing the end welder chooses to drop the tempo a bit and give us laid back breaks along with serene and mild atmospheres with “Find You Here”. Welder explores his experimental side with “Amber Dime” which has a very sharp beat with a cartoonish vocal sample looped over and over, a strange but decent effort. Continuing further we stumble upon “Isle Of Skye” that has a gritty and industrial sound that blends into a melancholic but melodic vibe. The last track “The Heart” has lots of layers with a guitar loop that dominates, not a favourite but I can’t really make up my mind. Welder is one of the best surprises of 2006, I am simply loving this album. This is an astounding effort for a debut with excellent production quality. All the sounds are playful, organic, very uplifting and danceable. I see many happy faces listening to Welder this summer.

  22. Promotional Text - After four years of recording, producing and composing new music in his Ambium Studio based in Stockholm, Sweden, Omnimotion is finally back with a second album. Utilizing inspirations and knowledge he picked up along his very diverse musical path, Stefan has created Dream Wide Awake. The album contains the best musical gems that were carefully chosen from the music that accumulated in this four year period. It is a beautifully mellow yet optimistic album, with a strong acoustic presence. Dream Wide Awake is an incredibly diverse album. It features eight different vocalists- from a rapper to an opera singer- and many guest musicians with an array of instruments including the violin, accordion, guitar, drums, harp & flute. The outcome hovers between the electronic and the acoustic, the hypnotic and the melodic, between abstract ambient and mellow songs, between dubby songs and IDM glitches. Omnimotion weaves and paints here an emotional musical journey that must not be missed and will leave you dreaming wide Artist - Omnimotion Title - Dream Wide Awake Label - Aleph-Zero, Israel Genre - ??? Ton Image (7:25) I couldn’t be happier when I first heard about this album, the promo text by Aleph-Zero is a 110% true. Bluetech, Shulman and now Omnimotion, innovation seems to be Aleph-Zero’s motto. “Stefan Lundaahl” from Sweden with his second solo release “Dream Wide Awake” has chosen a varied and very acoustical path to our senses, Smelting elements from various styles we are presented with a mixed bag of downtempo goodies. Fasten your seatbelts and let’s jet set into 5th gear. “Nothingness”, quite a paradoxical title for a track whose tranquil nature takes me away to an early morning sunrise along marine drive, adding to the wonder is the gritty flute sounds, it’s all just so perfect to set the groove for your day. “look at the skies, look at these trees, its so beautiful” The next track “Being” with its playful symphonic sounds and soothing vocal bits along with the emotional violin instantly put a big smile on my face. “Days Of silence” deserves much more then a standing applause, mellow guitar and violins layered over triphop beats with the deep and hypnotic voice of Aleah from the Binah fame to guide our senses, a formula that cannot go wrong. Track 4 indicates its time to board the dub train, ensure you have window seats to enjoy the scenery along the way. “Dream Wide Awake” is the only track from the album I didn’t quite enjoy; I guess it’s the gloomy vocals that play foul for me. “Une Autre Vie” and “Elves of Athoria” combine Rastafarian elements with summer Corsica vibes in the most elegant way possible, two really great laidback dub tracks. The same would go for “Dubber” which has a much deeper and pure Rasta feel with abstract beats and flute sounds. “Cozy Life” and “Japan” are tracks that I simply cant get enough of. Even though the vocals have a very pop feel, the tracks are standing example on how chillout artists can incorporate vocals without making them sound cheesy, the spacey guitar work on both tracks are astounding. A special mention would be the bass on Cosy Life, it’s a groove that get listeners hooked instantly. Stefan surprises me once again with “Purple Sky” featuring Hip Hop MC “Adam Perski “ and turntablism yet maintaining the chillout feel, if your complaining about the rap bit go hear the lyrics carefully, at least they compliment the music and make some sense as compared to random gangsta bling bling. Nearing the end we have “Electronic Love” that forays into glitchy and IDM sounds with random opera style singing bits that sound great, another display of creativity that’s not bound by any genre restrictions. “Open My Heart” takes us back on the dub train, but I wonder why it wasn’t placed along with the other dubby tracks. “Ton Image” closes the album on a very acoustic note with blissful vocals in some language that sounds like French or Italian to me. I actually went to check if there’s something wrong with my CD player when this track got over. I couldn’t believe the journey ended so fast, 72 minutes over in a jiffy!!! Wow! Well, good things always come to an end but what remains is the feeling. It’s obvious that Stefan has worked really hard on his second album, the production is really top notch and the mastering by Yaniv Shulman just adds to the sonic magic. The album is perfect for any downbeat electronic music enthusiast and I am sure this will make waves even outside the psychillout circles. As opposed to mass opinion I say leave the headphones behind and put this on a big sound system *winks*. On a final note when it comes to Aleph-Zero one cannot miss to mention the artwork. The beautiful pastel and organic colours on the album cover are so soothing and beautiful. This release is a concept one has to grasp, the music, the artwork, the album and track title all combine to form a cohesive bond. Stop reading and get that credit card out.
