Zen Mechanics - Holy Cities (Neurobiotic, April 2008)
longloststar replied to pr0fane's topic in 2008
Interesting, might give this a chance. A very late edit: It is an interesting album, mainly because non-cheesy full-on of high quality is so rare. Goes well together with stuff like U-Recken and Tron. -
Looking for something sharing this album's complex nature and "grown up" attitude towards its genré? Tron - Existence
-
You are looking for Freaked Frequency - FF Syndrome and the 34000 other acts that sound exactly the same. Vibe Tribe - Melodrama/Wise Cracks ITP - Lose Your Illusion That's just the top of the cheesecake.
-
For funkiness: Haltya - Electric Help Elves and Haltya -Forest Flavour, however not their latest release.

Where to go for psytrance reviews?
longloststar replied to longloststar's topic in General Psytrance
Want me to quote myself mate? -
With psyreviews.net closing down and psynews being slow, where should I go for fresh reviews?

Excellent album; haven't heard a goa tune as powerful as Operation Side, since Filteria's Navigate. My only complaint is that Jon Cocco's latest avatar is extremely gay.

1. Dreamforce - Vishnudata 2. AMD - Big Fish 3. Matenda - Natural Development 4. Pushmipulyu - 133 Thursdays 5. Vibrasphere - Exploring The Tributaries

Oh yes, Par-2 is excellent. Looking forward to the new Jikkenteki album and one from Zekazy as well.

as the topic states, I need some feel-good psy (well, want.) let me specify. bad: - emotional stuff; melancholy, nostalgia, sadness, confusion and things of these natures - cheese! in particular, no cheesy full-on. - hard stuff, generally. good: - beautiful emotions, the intuitive ideas, expressed sparsely. - some examples: eat static (early, mostly), 12 moons, galaxy, a lot of the orb, tron - existence, psydrop - fantasy seeds, hallucinogen in dub, some goa, like blue planet corporation abakus - that much closer to the sun i hope this makes some sense. what does the wise ones recommend?

PLANUM - "Spying Imagination" 2007
longloststar replied to maudio's topic in Artist News and Labels announcements
I'll do a quick one. Planum continues in the same vein as the first album; excellent production and very big and annoying melodic synth lines. At all times, you can count the layers of any given song on four fingers: kick, bass, perc and one humongous synth. The melodies are consistently beautiful; however, while a painting might be worth looking at, we don't want to be smacked over our heads with it; and, while a man might be handsome, surely we wouldn't want to be raped by him. Furthermore, the last song features poorly recorded piano lines and there is also a remake (i suppose) of "Living on my own" with Freddy singing, which surely will put off many, although I found that particular song quite strong. For melody junkies and no one else. -
To those who still are interested, here is some more on the subject. There is a philosophical concept called "family resemblance", which may justify that different elements fall under one concept ("psytrance"), even though there isn't a single property which they all share. It works like this; say we have three groups of items (1, 2 and 3) and each group consists of similar items. It may be the case that group 1 does not share a single property with group 3, while it does in fact share a property with group 2. Then, if group 2 in turn shares a property with group 3, we might say that a family concept applies to all three groups. The classic example here is "games"; you cannot find one property which each and every "game" has. The gist of it, I suppose, is that there can be many properties that are sufficient for the application of some concepts. If we apply this to psytrance, we get the following. Music that is called "psytrance" is interconnected in a complex way, such that it has at least one property of a group of special properties. Now, what these properties are is somewhat of different subject, but I think a lot of stuff can be put here, the basslines of full-on, the emotional effect of goa, a massive amount of crazy effects, or what ever seems fitting. Ultimately, I am sure, these properties are decided simply by the way we apply "psytrance" in our ordinary use of our language.

I constantly get the question, what psytrance is; and never have I succeeded in giving a satisfactory answer. Trance which is psychadelic; wait, say what now? Some people seem to think that the bassline in psy is the psychadelic element in the trance, which constitute psytrance. Let us assume this to be the case, that the particular bassline in psy, is what defines it. Two general questions come to my mind. (1) What is particular about the psy bassline? Is it its repetitive nature? But not all basslines in music which is clearly psytrance, is repetitive in any general manner, is it? Furthermore, (2) does the definition not seem restrictive in the sense that it excludes subgenré such as chillout and ambient. Am I perhaps wrong in thinking that these at all are contained within 'psytrance'? I once encountered the claim, that psytrance is defined by its ability to affect the mode one finds oneself under, when one is high. This does, however, beg the question, what is it with psytrance that enables this ability in the first place? These questions seem to me, as a relative beginner in the world of psy, difficult to answer.

VA - Mainspring Motion
longloststar replied to Jikkenteki's topic in Artist News and Labels announcements
Any date for the release? -
Ive been taught that, as a rule of thumb, you should cut the frequencies of the kick from all other sounds so that the kick stays clear throughout the song. Now, is it generally a good idea to do this with the bass frequencies as well?

Vibrasphere - Exploring the Tributaries Holy devil in hell, what a slick album to go with that chick cover. Straight on the curly line that lies between tastyness and fuzzyness, Vibrasphere from the cold winters of Sweden has created an unresistable full length with melodies so appealing and basslines so fulfilling, surely you will twirl on your toes in utter delight. Lets start exploring. 1. Heading North. Like a shrimp sandwich aperitif, we start off unexcitingly; its almost beatless, somewhat boring but beautiful ambient; setting the stage for something greater, much like the tender caress of young inexperienced lovers before the final act initates. This would have worked better as an intro, cutting a minute or two. But certainly, Im grasping at straws here. 2. Erosion. Ah, how the name tempts another erotic analogy; but I'll avoid them (until I forget that I should.) We get our first 4/4 kick, albeit a soft one, accompanied by a near to shapeless bass. Higher frequencies consist of partly a moaning/flutelike sound giving the song a distinct feeling, and partly an arp-based melody joining the beat rougly halfway in. This is a very charming tune and the melody evolves nicely, once it begins, into a satisifying climax (shame on me already?). I am captivated, but not yet caught. Lets move on. 3. Isolation. 4/4 again, this time harder altough far from annoying; in fact, it contributes to a very hypnotic atmosphere together with a nicely repetitive arp and an equally repetitive mid frequency fuzzy synth hit. This feels dark. Now, however, I am sucked in, like a doomed bird into a giant turbine awaiting its final destiny; its struggle against the fierce winds lasts into the sixth minute when a new melody, a new hope if you will, is introduced. I would have prefered it climaxed into something darker; like that poor bird, at last in peace with its gloomy fate, altough this is more in line with the feel of the album. The best track on the album, in my opinion. 4. Vertical. Sparingly melodious, I find this somewhat boring, its major appeal being great windy drops giving the song a fine exploratory feeling. This is a paranthese to me, and being that I'll move on. 5. In Control. This is too much disco for my poor soul. I find the melody somewhat obnoxious and the singing (talking) does not make matters better. However, it is nevertheless a highly acceptable tune. 6. 102 Miles from Here. A funky bassline, now thats a surprise; it is in reality what gives the song its entire character. This is in fact as funky as the album gets. Again we have these windy pads that pass by; their level of perfection is, I find, what gives Vibrasphere their unique sound this time around. Anyway, the song climaxes into one part fast pace low freq, one part slow paced high freq melody. Very enjoyable. 7. Wasteland. Into darker territories again, as the name suggest. We are treated to an IDMish intermezzo, or two. The bassline follows the main melody like a dog strapped to rolling boulder into the nordic night and we have these siren/banshee howls in the far. Funky and atmospherish, this is nice but not exceptional. 8. Forever Imaginary. Now this is something else. A dreamlike scenario is painted with multiple layers of melodies and a very deep and long bassline. A beautiful track, in lines with the dreams I imagine inhabits the mountain climber's mind on his last night before the summit. 9. Ensueño. Another track lacking the good old 4/4; what we have here is a pleasant ride with occasional and intensive deep padlike swirls of melody which make the tune distinct. Relaxing and positivizing, should there be such a word, setting the stage for a grand exit. 10. Mountain Lake. This is the lake of some lost childhood, sprinkled with melancholy and the insight of what will never be again. It has all the beauty of the summer and the winter, expressed through a piano line; the essential part of the song and it cannot, I am sure, be disliked, in fact disloved. It does not get much better. 11. Yaku. An outro, it does the job, whatever the job is. What a sweet ride, if you have not aquired the taste for Vibrasphere yet, do it now. If you have, enjoy. 4.5/5

What a wonderful album. The variation of styles gives it incredible perseverance, over 300 listens and it still feels fruity fresh.

Where is the score, damion?

Ah this is deliciously funky and more mellowed down compared to Forest Flavours, which does their music good, I believe.
