He he I guess it's a matter of perception. I call it Tribal. I did have this debate with another person once. He said my new live versions sounded proggy. But to me it's not proggy even though I am sure there always will be similarities.

I've updated the "A State Of Mind" Teaser" as the track has evolved. IMO it's moving ahead very nice In the end I did add some kind of melody to the track. In the direction of the old "Master Of The Rainforest" string to keep it deep and flowing. As I wrote earlier I like a lot of different music but I still feel it's a problem if you buy a ticket to a party or Festival expecting to dance to psychedelic trance just to discover it's not psychedelic or trance.

Sheyba - Trance Africa Express Remix Competition
Elysium replied to Elysium's topic in Artist News and Labels announcements
Remember to upload your "Trance Africa Express" remixes before the deadline: At midnight (CET+1) April 30th, 2010. -
I know what you mean and agree but I think you misunderstood my point. I do not want music to stay the same (here I think regarding sounds, production, melodies etc.) but when it comes to getting people into a state of trance" (without use of drugs), which is the whole idea and center point in trance music, then you can not call non-hypnotic music for trance any longer. And 9/10 tracks in this scene is not even close to hypnotic with all the big hands build-ups and 20 break-downs in 6 minutes or way too fast bpm's. To get into a state of trance you need a bpm not too fast simply because a faster heart rhythm caused byt too fast bpm's will do the oposite and prevent you from getting into a state of trance - NATURALLY That was my point edited down to a very simple explanation
-
I disagree. For me the essence of the debate is if today's psytrance should be called trance according to the way I understand the meaning of trance music (the roots of the term trance and the point that it's supposed to put you into a state of trance). I can only debate out from a personal view. It's a matter of why you as a person entered/enter into this scene. I can with 100% accuracy say I would never enter into this scene today if I initially had been introduced to today's dominant genres of this scene (opposite of how the music was and what it stood for when I discovered this scene). Hands in the air and big buildups and mainstream pop psytrance is just not compliant with my personal believes or why I entered into this scene so many years ago. Yes things change and the World moves on but some things are essential and can not be debated. And here I think about the term "trance". Trance is trance and when trance is removed from the music it's no longer trance. Simple as that. I would even stretch it so far and debate that 9/10 tracks in this scene has very little to do with "trance". Of course there is still trance music released but let's be honest. It's very hard to enter into a state of trance when you constantly are being interrupted by the next "wow factor" break and "The God" on stage all people are looking at and worshiping instead of dancing. And this lead me to another point. The music and the scene has lost it's essential vision. It's not about fame and fortune (Shpongle get's Euro 100.000 these days, the right clothes, chasing girls, getting drunk, snorting coke but all about dancing and being free of all those things society put down our throats. I am sure many disagree with me, especially those who did not experience the early scene and by that have no comparison. But this is my view on the scene today. Should I just give up and leave then. Maybe. But I still love trance in it's pure form and believe things can change. Maybe I'm just being naive And I produce and listen to so much other new music so I disagree that I'm one of those who never accept changes. But changes are only good if it bring on something better!

Never ending debate regarding dark "psytrance". Let's cut it down to the essence of what's missing these days in the scene. "trance"!!!! And here I am thinking about "the state of trance" the music could put you in. This essential and fundamental ingredient has gone missing general speaking with exceptions - IMO.

The very limited CD version (incl. extra special tracks) will be on my own label Beat Agency and on various online shops. And then there will be a free release too.
-
No idea yet I have thrown out many ideas until this track. I want to make an album as close to my vision as possible so I have no idea how long it will take at this moment
-
Please read it more careful: "Bare in mind this is just a teaser and far from being ready in the final mix as well as the overall production." Also please remember what you have in mind is not necessary what I have in mind This track wont have flutes. I am aiming at a more tribal oriented album and not so much an ethnic album (Ethnic as in my later tracks such as the various singles following the debut album). I will stay more true to the debut album "Dance For The Celestial Beings" with a modern sound combining tribal, trance and even techno but in a way that guarantee to be hypnotic as it's all about "a state of trance". Some tracks will have melodies some wont. I am aware that some will like this direction and some won't. And that is OK The point is that even though I am going to stay true to my debut Album and the atmosphere and vision of that Album 2010 is 15 years down the road and I have changed as a musician which of course will influence the music. It's just natural and a good thing IMO
-
I've had some people asking me what the next Elysium Album will sound like so here's a small teaser (flash plugin needed) from my forthcoming Album "Dance For The Celestial Beings II" Bare in mind this is just a teaser and far from being ready in the final mix as well as the overall production. But it will give you a good indication of what I am aiming at. Make sure to keep your volume a mid level or be prepared to get your ears ripped of Slow Connections [2.7 MB] Elysium - A State Of Mind [mp3] Fast Connections [23.6 MB] Elysium - A State Of Mind [wav]

It's basically legal but with the restrictions mentioned above. One thing that really pisses me off is when the pirate groups grab a legal free to download release and re-pack it with their own crappy conversion and useless notes and rename the track titles. I never understood why!

Nice to see such a balanced debate with some interesting thoughts Of course there will always be tunes that are hard to categorize and who borrow from other genres and ends up as a hybrid between Progressive and Psychedelic trance. But when 99.5% of all progressive "psy" trance in this scene has left the psychedelic factor behind then I believe it's wrong to keep calling it psychedelic. It's similar to the debate about technoish music (I call it Technoish because it's not really pure Techno) entering into the scene while the parties still gets categorized as psytrance parties or festivals. Where does it end or does it not matter anymore what it's called? To me the psychedelic trance roots of this scene are important and I also feel it's totally misguiding to call non psychedelic music for psychedelic (Even though when it comes to some technoish it's quite trippy because of the repetitive patterns). Well when it comes to Festivals it's ok I guess as there usually are more stages, unless the main stage focus on technoish/progressive and still call the Festival a psytrance Festival. Then I believe it's not only misguiding but also false marketing. Again I have absolutely nothing against technoish or progressive trance. I just believe we should refer to the genres the way they are supposed to be referred to. I can imagine a newcomer ending up thinking releases such as those on Iboga and Tribal Vision (again just examples) are the essence of psychedelic trance because that's what it's referred to in our scene today.

Timecode: I think they have some cool psychedelic and deep stuff even though I really do not like most of the releases use of Full on bass lines. This drags down their releases a lot for me. Nexus Media: Well to be honest this is not my Cup Of tea. Way too many of their releases sound like something I have heard a million times the last 12-14 years. Yabai: Again overuse of Full on Bass lines. Not for me. Insomnia: Again why all these Full On bass lines? It completely ruin the otherwise interesting use of sounds. Exogenic: Def. something different and experimental but The Suomi sound never caught my attention. Too weird for the sake of being different IMO. Hadra: I have not checked them out due to their extensive spam bombs on emails. Glowing Flame: Again all I hear are the well known Full On Bass lines. A good example is their (i think) latest release Braincell "Frequency Evolution". Nothing spectacular here IMO. I guess when it come to psychedelic for me I am pretty Old school and into deep tribal stuff like Shaolin Wooden Men and a lot of those old releases on Psy-harmonics as well as early KoxBox, Psychic Warriors Ov Gaia. This music is way more psychedelic than most of today's Full on cloned psytrance. But this has turned into my own personal opinion of course and is quite off-topic:)

Auchh now you even get sarcastic I never said I am more qualified. I only said I know what I know from my long history with the danish scene, the iboga guys and communicating with Banel from Iboga. I did never say Profane is less qualified. I only asked why he would be more qualified and you replied he was more qualified because he work for Iboga which I then mentioned is not the case as far as I know. And again I am debating from a musical analytical view. Not taste etc. So maybe Profane see Iboga's releases as Prog. Psytrance. But try to analyze most of their releases and compare it to psytrance. That's what I am debating. Anyway to keep your top 10 free from my spamming i have started this debate. You are welcome to participate. http://www.psynews.org/forums/index.php?/topic/58500-progressive-vspsy

Continuing from this top 10/debate I find it interesting to debate if the so-called Progressive "Psy" Trance really has much to do with Psytrance these days? In my opinion and only by focusing on the analysis of their releases/music (lifestyle etc. is another debate) labels such as Iboga and Tribal Vision (to mention a few examples) no longer can be categorized as Progressive "psy" trance labels. I know the people behind the labels and many of their artists originate from the psytrance scene but IMO this does still not make their releases "psy". There are notable differences in the way the music is composed and where psytrance is more "wild" and focus on faster BPM, yes it can also be more slow but in general we see 145+ BPM, and an overall "trippy" atmosphere (in a perfect world) Progressive trance is first of all more slow, yes some early progressive "psy" trance was faster but not really anymore, and focus much more on harmonies (big harmonic stabs etc.) and a more "sophisticated" sound (not to be misunderstood as being better in any sense). Furthermore a notable percentage of Iboga and Tribal Visions releases are Techno and Tech House these days (especially the remixes they release). Shops such as Beatport add their releases into the Progressive House section because this is what the majority of people outside the psy-trance scene hear when they listen to their releases. Of course taste is different from person to person but I hope we can keep the taste factor out of this debate as it's not what I am aiming at. Let's keep it down to a matter of differences contra similarities between these two genres. So is it correct or even fair to keep categorizing labels, who once release psy-trance and progressive Psytrance (Did Tribal Vision ever release psy at all?), as Progressive Psytrance labels just because their artists once a long time ago released psytrance? IMO no! PS! I like a lot of Iboga and Tribal Vision's releases so it's not a debate if I like them or not. Keep that in mind please
-
As far as I know Profane is not hired by the label. He is an Iboga label DJ (And a damn good DJ by the way) but again why would he be more competent than me on this issue? I spoke with Banel(Head and owner of Iboga) the other day regarding recieving promos and he also called it Prog.Trance/House. I did not see him once calling their releases "psy". And yes I know it's off-topic but hey it's an interesting discussion and not spamming (well maybe to you it is) and I do not see any harm in this discussion. But of-course I can ask Mars to move it and we can make another thread so you can have your top 10 in peace
-
Maybe I did not express myself correct. I am merely discussing this out from a music analytical opinionand not from a "lifestyle" etc. point of view No matter if the artists originate from the psytrance scene or not most progressive "psy" trance got very few references back to original psytrance - except for the fact many artists originate from the scene. In my opinion its simply two different genres and by that I believe it's misguiding to call it psy-progressive. Why would Profane be a better person to judge this (no offense mate)? I mean yeah he is associated with Iboga but does that make him more competent to say if I am right or wrong? As I said I also know the Iboga guys and have followed their release strategy for years now and should be just as competent to know what I am talking about when it comes to their releases. Yes as I have repeated I know Iboga originate from the psytrance scene and yes a few releases might have a few references toward psytrance (examples: Orion, Behind Blue Eyes) but the majority of their releases has now for a very long time been geared toward a much wider audience. I can give you a good example. When Iboga started to release their material on Beatport they classified their music as psytrance (and some of their releases still end up there - in some cases wrongly) but I am quite positive Beatport at one point directed their releases into the appropriate section which was progressive house and these days into the techno and tech house sections. Because this is how everybody else beside the psytrance scene hear most Iboga releases. Not as psy.progressive but as progressive Trance/House and with the late remixes Techno/Tech Trance. So my point still remain that 99,5% of all Iboga releases are not psy these days and by that it's misguiding to call it Progressive Psy-trance. And as I wrote above in my reply to goa-getter I am not discussing this from a "life-style" point of view. It's from a musical point of view only.
-
I respect your taste that's not my issue here. My issue is the term "psytrance" misused over and over again toward music that's not intended to be psytrance. I know the Iboga guys since 1994 and also know what their release vision is. Yes they originate from the psytrance scene here in Denmark but their vision of releasing music is far from being psytrance these days (and have not been the vision for quite a while). I know many people call everything they meet in this scene "psytrance - this and that" but that does not make it correct just because it's available in this scene (another debate). Progressive trance in this scene has for many years not had much to do with psytrance. That's of course my opinion but I do analyze the music before I speak
-
But Iboga has not been a psytrance label for years. They have release mostly prog. trance and is still true to the prog. trance roots as well as getting into other scenes such as techno and tech house. I really do not understand why you refer to them as a psytrance label. It's like the many people confusing prog. trance with psytrance on a daily basis all over the various forums. I never understood why they never noticed the difference.
