You have totally misunderstood what a remix competition is and the legal aspects behind a remix competition. Its NOT a contract! Its a competition with some very clear legal binding rules and remix material being used OWNED 100% BY THE ORIGINAL ARTIST OR LABEL. The legality behind the competition is indeed validated by a danish law firm (used by my record label the last 5 years and used in other competitions too) and the rules can indeed be changed by the organizer of the competition. The only contract that ever will be made is with the winner of the competition prior to the release of the remix. Read the rules again and also read the paragraph stating that any artist entering into the competition accept the legal binding rules and are bound to respect them! Every participating artist had the right to withdraw themselves from the competition IF they did not agree to the changed rules regarding the number of winners. None complained or asked to be withdrawn from the competition when we announced the changed rules. Only after the result the complaints started

And I was not replying to you but to tripper. I respect your opinion but it wont change the result. Please respect our opinion too.
-
Last comment and feel free to reply HONEST: None of you who keep complaining would complain and use the excuse of the change in competition rules - none of you complained when it was announced that the rules had changed - IF one of your favorite remixes (read: ONLY GOA) had won. Be honest

Forgot my roots? Give me a break. What do you people know about Goa-trance roots? It's hardly in spirit of the roots of the Goa scene to be jealous, nitpicking and complaining because one of your favorite remixes did not win. On the contrary the spirit is to accept things as they are and also to welcome diversity which is hardly what some of you so called "openminded" people accept these days. So please do not speak to me about forgetting my roots. Sorry but this is getting totally stupid and the amount of bitching is never ending! END OF STORY!!! I am really done here with this debate. keep bitching and being sour grapes! It wont change a thing. It was not a so-called Goa track who won and so what!
-
I think your opinion is colored from your own taste and failing to wanting to understand what I am saying and respecting our decision and opinion. You and I have a very different taste when it come to music. I for one do not share the taste of most of your releases. That just taste and nothing personal at all. We just dont share taste. Maybe we did in the old days but not today. Ce la vie and not a problem I respect you for what you do as a professional. Please respect our decision instead of keeping questioning our opinion. And I do think this debate has reached it's end. We will release the winning remix and hope and trust the participating artists to not trade the remixes beyond what we already said they could.

As I wrote any Remix competition (have you ever done one or participated in one? - I have and have made competitions before too!) reserve the right to change the rules in case of unexpected changes such as too few remixes coming in. When reading your and a few other members complaints its as if we deliberate are out to disrespect the artist or out to cheat them. I am a bit disappointed you choose to see things this way and I can't help thinking there would have been no complaints if it had been a "Goa" remix who won. Of course taste is taste but I simply do not agree with your opinion that those remixes had what we were looking for (again no disrespect just our honest opinion - speaking both for Jean's and my own behalf). We never said this was a "Goa" trance only competition. We actually stated we accepted more styles. It's a misunderstanding on your behalf if you think that just because it's a old-school Goa track, only Goa remixes was welcome.
-
As I explained to you on Facebook (and as you yourself suggested). If you remove our melodies (bass-line included) and the samples you are more than welcome to do whatever you like with the track. Funny how you complain here but not to me in private
-
Where did I ever say you can not upload it to myspace etc.? I never said that! Please read what I wrote. All I say is you can not trade it via peer to peer networks or give it to pirate groups as you yourself suggested you want to do! And you could easily contact me on facebook as you already did if you have questions And sorry but you guys have misunderstood the concept of a remix competition. A remix competition does not give you ownership of your remix. Even if you are hired to do a remix you will never get the legal rights to your remix. The original artist ALWAYS has the copyright. And seriously when you enter into a competition there are never any insurance you will win. So the time you use is your own decision. You can hardly blame us that you spend 2 months. Cheers Kristian We already thanked you for participating and I don't think we ever disrespected any of the participating artists.
-
And one last comment. I am pretty sure if it had been a "Goa" remix who won NO ONE would have said a word about 3 winning remixes. And no one would have complained Just my observation in the posts where people complain. It's quite evident they are upset because it's not a "Goa" remix that won!
-
Anyways I dont really see there's any more to discuss. All we are saying is we do not accept people trading remixes on peer to peer networks including our original material except for what we has said we will allow in the first post.
-
If you had any knowledge about remix competition you would know that there's always a clause for the competition to change it's rules. Many aspects can change and one is if there's not enough submitted remixes. 8 Remixes is simply not enough. Yes if we had felt that the some of the 8 submitted remixes, except for the winning remix, was living up to our expectations it would have been another story. But this is just how it is. They did not. No disrespect to anyone at all we do respect your skills and you as artists. I am just being honest letting you know where we are coming from. And Anoebis I am sure you too always want the best of the best on your releases? or? And I am also sure you do not accept trading?
-
Read the competition rules please. You can not distribute your remixes over peer to peer networks or to any pirate groups. And where are your respect for the original material? This will not be accepted. We made sure to tell you the rules from day one and if you did not accept them you should not have entered into the competition. Simple as that. There are clear legal rules involved in remix competitions and by entering a remix competition you accept those legal binding rules. Then there's a member ranting about wanting to trade all the remixes. What a nice member and attitude - irony! The amount of bitching is really sad to see. We have learned one thing though. We wont have any other remix competitions including this community. Yes the artists are of course always welcome but it wont be announced here anymore. No offense to you Mars but this is just too much of a Kindergarten of jealousy and bad attitude. It's really sad to see the disrespect of Disco Hooligans effort and fair winning track. As I wrote in the original post. The artist are more than welcome to get constructive feedback from us and get an explanation why they did not win - if they like to. So far no one wanted any feedback. I do not blame the artist in the above i wrote. They seem cool and seem to accept the fact they did not win. But other people here are extremely close minded and purists! Some of your attitudes has got NOTHING to do with the Goa spirit! Now flame me away

The remix competition was not only limited to psynews users and artists and who ever said an old-school track has to be remixed within the same genre?
-
We really did not have any ideas until we heard the remixes. It could just as easily have been a "old school/new school" remix who won. We just honestly felt the Disco Hooligans Remix was the best. It's really as simple as that.
-
what a lame comment! I am sorry but the amount of bitching we already received is amazing! So much for open minds in the "Goa" community because it's not a "Goa" remix who won. What about being happy for those who won fair and square instead of this "sour grapes" attitude?
-
No it is in our opinion and taste the best remix of the ones we received (no offense as it's of course all about taste here). We do not focus on "the right genre" within the ones we originally were looking for. We focus on ideas, uniqueness and overall production quality too.
-
As mentioned in the other topic about the remix competition we only received 8 remixes so there we simply not enough to decide from when it came down to variation in genre (all remixes were basically the same genre) as we are aiming at releasing a variated remix package. So we decided to reduce it to one winner.

We are happy to announce that we have found the Winner of the Sheyba - Trance Africa Express Remix Competition The Winner is: DISCO HOOLIGANS Link to the remix They have been notified by email today. We (Jean Borelli and Kristian Thinning Andersen) would like to thank everyone who participated in the competition. Your remixes had great ideas! It was a pleasure to listen to your tunes. Further info regarding the release date etc. will be made public as soon as all details has been agreed. PS! The participating artists who would like feedback regarding their remixes are welcome to contact me. Furthermore you are welcome to upload your remix for people to listen to as long as you do not make it available for download. Important Information: I have been asked by some participating artists if they can release their remixes on other labels. To this I have to say no. The rules was very clear and fully published (also in the remix package) and every remix competition is like this. You participate with your remix and if you do not win you use it as an experience. The original artist always hold the copyright to the original material: unique melodies and samples (if created by the artist) etc. As written above you are welcome to upload the remixes as long as it's not made available for download to a wide audience. We are furthermore bending the original rules and allowing you to play and trade your remixes in a limited way to other Djs (and friends).

Sheyba - Trance Africa Express Remix Competition
Elysium replied to Elysium's topic in Artist News and Labels announcements
I do not agree at all. It's a bit of an elitist view really. One artist can be great at producing genre X but suck at producing genre Y. No genre is easier than another genre. As an example it's extremely difficult to make good minimal music. Why? Because you have to make very few elements very good. So it's not correct to say that Goa is more hard to make than any other genre. Each genre has it's very talented artists and not so talented artists. And no I do also not agree that Goa is superior to any other style (Quote: Goa is the Hitchcock of electronic music). It's all in the ears of those listening and called TASTE -

Facebook, Myspace, Psynews, Isratrance, Psymusic UK and via Newsletters. I just counted the downloads of the package. 534 unique downloads and only 8 remixes in. Bit of a letdown really. Especially when people had almost 2.5 month. But Ce La Vie -

Sheyba - Trance Africa Express Remix Competition
Elysium replied to Elysium's topic in Artist News and Labels announcements
With only 8 incoming remixes its impossible to pick 3 winners. And there also has to be a certain quality to the remixes. Fair or not this is how it's going to be. I don't see any reason why we should announce a 2nd and 3rd place too. It's not a popularity contest The announcement of the winner is coming very soon. -
It's ok really. I'm no longer making music to get accepted or to make money. I am past those years I came to realize that in any scene this one included getting gigs and selling music is all about quantity versus quality. Most successful artists (minus a few gems) in this scene make music like a factory assembly line pushing out one similar pop track after another in order to feed the ever hungry non critical crowd. A huge chunk of those who live of their gigs (live or dj'ing) are hardly any longer unique or bring their own sound in this scene. Most parties or Festivals support quantity and similarity over quality and personal sound. Most music has to be stereotype in order to be successful these days. A sad development but nonetheless quite true. If uniqueness and individuality and quality was what organizers and the crowd demanded way more diversity would be found in the lineups. As one organizer (Hadra) very blunt told me recently. The reason why they do not want to book me is because I do not sound "modern" (Meaning: You do not make fullon, dark or progressive) where after the spammed me day out and day with endless emails promoting stereotype boring lineup's.

I got a big fat ZERO from that re-release. Gig-wise I also got nothing from that release. So to sum it down. It was not worth the while.
