Any software from the ones mentioned above, as long as you're comfortable with it.

Twilight is great to dance to, about 142-152 BPM and its about relentless energy. Basically in between dark and full-on. Here are some twilight tracks
-
Try Office. I like it because its realistic, about situations that could happen in real life and how people react to them.
This is from the 90s but if you like british humour try the Jeeves and Wooster TV series.
-
You mostly get twilight and full-on down here, so I haven't danced to Goa yet. I love the mad, ripping twi basslines and driving synths. Psy means I can totally let go
-
oops ! my mistakeRastamans came back from Amsterdam, and chatted about deepness of reggae bass-lines.
-
I just remembered, if you've seen Human Traffic there's this part where two freaks come back from Goa and say "The bassline was so loud, you could hear it in Jamaica" released in mid '99 so basslines were big by then.
-
Not sure if this is what you were looking for but I was pretty surprised by the bassline in Sandman - Tripulogic from '96.I have a question.
When did the rolling bass line originate? What are the earliest tracks with a rolling bass line?
A fair number of goa tracks did have basslines but they just weren't overt.
OT: I like fast, groovy, energetic fullon with lots of acid like CPU - CPU and Space Tribe - TTLG etc... and if artists who've made really good music want to make some money for a change, sure!
-
You could try 'Primer'. It isn't completely out of the box or mind blowing, but its very good for a budget of $7000 and it fits your "low budgets" & "ambitious ideas" criterion Its also hard SF if thats what you like.It is really a shame that such rich and descriptive genre rarely gets properly presented nowadays, relying entirely on CGI techniques, with no substance, cause whole genre back in the days, when sci-fi genre was progressing, with low budgets and ambitious ideas, was starting to set the standards for the new and modern sci-fi genre.
There are only few of the new films that can redefine that genre nowadays, and that is a shame, cause now, when we have technology, we should make good stories right.
Just in case you haven't seen it, another recent film that has some depth and good themes is District 9.
Does 'Pi' come under SF? Guess not. And are you sure 'The Fifth Element' should be on this poll? I thought it was ridiculous.
I completely agree with you otherwise, less Space Opera and more depth please!
From what I have seen,
1. Bladerunner - nothing comes close
2. 2001, A Space Odyssey - beautiful montages, it gives you a real feel of travelling in space, of how it is 'out there'
3. Metropolis - has to be in the top 5, way ahead of its time - its influences are evident in later films like Bladerunner.
4. Alien
5. Twelve Monkeys - extremely disorienting you can feel what Bruce Willis' character is feeling. Its a crazy take on time travel, and has very good acting.
Other good ones : Gattaca/The Day the Earth Stood Still/The Matrix

I suppose consciousness is the difference between being 'alive' and being 'sentient'?

Oh...ok. Well thats not what I read books for generally...but hey! you called it one 'hell' of a book I'll read it sometime then.Dude, the Bible is one hell of a book. Doesn't matter if you're any religious or not. As Alex (A Clockwork Orange) said: It's full of ultra-violent sex and gore. Or something similar.
-
I will. It seems to be more intimidating than Ulysses so I'm waiting for a clear stretch of free time.Read Finnegan's Wake now.
Yup I was of that opinion right uptill I read Ulysses but it after reading it I simply had to admit there wasn't a better book out there.we are talking about here and it is always subject to opinion
Currently I'm in the middle of "Walden" for about the (dozenth) time [can't seem to get enough of HDT)
And anytime someone is looking for the most fascinating, life-changing, mind-altering, earth-shattering, awe-inspiring read of all times
I always highly recommend the Bible.
I haven't read Walden yet, thanks for that suggestion
The Bible I might read, but much later. Being agnostic, I'm not sure how taken up I'll be by religious books.

Whenever I see a critic's Top books list, Ulysses is at the top or near the top, so I decided to give it a read. And it fully deserves the place. Nothing I've read yet even comes close to Ulysses. Its just so far ahead of anything else, that you have to accept that it is the greatest book written and that James Joyce is a genius.
Ulysses is a very hard book to get through. It took me three months, whereas say Dostoevsky's Brothers Karamazov took me about a month. I don't recommend using a dedicated Ulysses guide because a guide 'dissects' the book, and takes away the magic. What I did was to read a chapter, and then stick to the summaries on Spark Notes.
Ulysses exists on two levels. For the average reader, even if you don't understand what he's getting at, the wordplay, and sentence construction is a delight in itself. Don't worry too much about figuring out what each and every sentence means. The second level is if you are a critic who's a English major, has Greek mythology on his/her fingertips, knows some French/Latin/Italian, is famaliar with Irish history, has read Homer then yup then you can worry about what every word means.
Tip: Define <word> on Google is the simplest way to getting word meanings.
Ulysses is out of copyright now is a free, legal download from Project Gutenberg...

Rakshas is my favourite, rolling track with acid flying all over the place. I find Asia 2001 very hard to like during home listening, imo its more for the body.
-
The best psy vocal sample is in the middle of The Nommos - Amma.
X-Dream - The 1st also has good vocoded sounding stuff.
-
Today's riddle:
Its getting a little repetitive now.
-
Ah you can never be too sure with all the sub genre floating around. Neurofunk is great!Neurotech=neurofunk.
-
I assume you've heard Arrakis and Breach? For me its psy with broken beats. Anyhow I have a broad definition of what "psychedelic" is. And I have no idea what 'neurotech' is. I know what neurofunk is.Black sun empire is hardly psystep.
They are neurotech/something which ends up sounding somewhat similar but if you compare it to Cybernetika's album. Which sounds like neurotech, with delay and with psy structure.
-
Alien Mental - Mind Hack has plenty of NSKPs if I remember correctly.
-
There's nothing like some good Psy DnB. Unfortunately not too many artist seem to be enthused the by idea. Whats not to love? Crazy synths laid over rolling broken beats? I hope Cybernetika's Atropos is just one of many more albums. Okay Psy DnB I've come across. And that brings me to, can we call it something better? Like "Doofstep"?
::Albums::
Deviant Electronics - Blunt Instruments - chilled out stuff
VA - Freekstyle - inside is pretty good
Evol Intent - Era of Diversion - a couple of the tracks such as parts of the title track approach psydnb. Otherwise the best dnb album i've heard.
Mahisha - Empire - cyber guru, dishoom and the title track are my faves. has an industrial-ish sound on some tracks
Nam Shub of Enki meets Kiki.iLL - In the Valley of Mood - clickher is my fav here
Sibilant - Proper Filth
Shakta - Feed the Flame Disc 2 - its got the digitalis dnb/breaks tracks
::Tracks::
Technical Itch - The Legend (Evol Intent Remix) - this track is crazy like psy-acidcore-dnb-hardcore haha
Skynet & Stakka - Timelines
BSE - Arrakis
BSE - Breach - this is the best psy/trance dnb I've heard, mindblowing
Raiden - Fallin
Noisia - End Game - just a bit of techpsy creeps in
Unknown Error - Shadows - sort of like a dnb version of Juice
Unknown Error - The Yearning
ok thats all the psy dnb I know. there is other stuff but this is the stuff worth listening to. and..there's my psydnb track its not bad

Heh well my Downfall is better! Which is why I didn't mention Rossz Csillag Alatt Szuletett. But yeah thats definitely worth a listenWow, someone mentioned Venetian Snares and didn't mention Rossz Csillag Alatt Szuletett?
-
Wow...why has no one mentioned the majestic Venetian Snares - My Downfall (Original Soundtrack)
Also I guess martial industrial could be what you're looking for. Try Triarii - Muse in Arms
And I haven't given this a listen but afaik its classical made with synths Wendy Carlos - Switched-On Bach
-
Psycore
Alien Mental - Mind Hack - doesn't seem to be mentioned a lot, but I think its really twisted.
Twilight
Ocelot - Vector Selector
Principles of Flight - Chaos Opera - still a new album, lets see how it holds up but imo its good.
The rest has already been mentioned above.

Heard this track of his and I quite like it. Its the first one here http://www.discogs.com/Various-We-Were-Acid/release/1662764But I would really like to expand my knowledge of Ilar's output.
Whatever little IDM I have heard, I've quite liked it. Seems you're counting breakcore as IDM? In that case,
The Flashbulb - Kirlian Selections
Venetian Snares - My Downfall (Original Soundtrack)
VA - Artifical Intelligence - really like this one.
Autechre wise I like Gantz Graf a lot, and when you listen to it with that vid there's nothing like it. Here it is -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9lpy6UROF4

I'm open to everything, its just that psy/goa is so good that I end up following it more than other genres. Otherwise all good music is welcome, doesn't matter where it comes from I like Drum & Bass a lot, and atleast something from all EDM genres like breakcore/techno/noise/classic trance/house etc... but psy/goa provides the maximum neural stimulation
Oforia: Another one bites the dust

If he wants to change direction thats his prerogative, I wish he had done it under another name since he anyway has so many projects (Indoor, Omputer, Phreaky, Sound Pollution, Tandu, Oforia etc...) Just bought Retrodelic Vibes 3 and am listening to Oforia - Timelessness on it, wow he's come a long way with this new track
