This could be a way to become better producers and hopefully give some inspiration and ideas. I'll start with a trick that i often find useful, this might seem obvious to some but it might be news to someone. Let's say i've created a nice bass that sound's great in unison with a wide stero effect but it doesn't sound so good in mono, or maby i want to have a part of a song with only the bass and think it sound's pretty boring in mono. Well as you might know you shouldn't use alot of stereo effects an reverbs on bass since itt will most probably do more harm then good on the lower frequencies. What i usually do in this situation is that i equalize out all the low frequencies of the bass, and use my stereo effects only on the higher frequencies. Then i make one mono track with only the low frequencies (this sound can even be made on another synth then the high frequencie bass if you want) and mix the two together. Here is an example: >Low Bass< >High Bass in stereo with some reverb< >Together< The same works for drums: >Low Kick< >High Kick< >Together< Kick and bass together: >Kick + Bass< I have to leave now but i will post more stuff when i get back. Negrosex Posted June 5, 2005 Author Share Posted June 5, 2005 Ok, heres another one. If you have problems with clipping in the low frequencies you can use a variation of the tecnique above. You can cut holes in the low bass track to make room for the kick. Here is a problematic bass and kick: >Problem< Listen as i make alot of room for the kick by cuting away low frequencies of the bassline: >Problem Solved< You should offcorce use the original bassline when the kick isn't kicking. I often use arpeggiator with an automation on the cut. automation to turn the arp on & off. automation to change arp to climbing, down, spread, random FX : 3 sec delay , small reverb a low melodie with slow arp or arp off. + a high melodie with quick arp made a quick example, track is made in 5 minutes, got 2 melodies on 3 vst's. 4 melodie patterns 8 automation patterns arpeggiator is a very powerfull tool blablabla ex-zampl Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Ok, melodies it is: Here is the fail safe way to make melodies: Pick a chord, for this example i start out with a Cm, use the notes of that chord to make a melody. The melody strives towards the base note of the scale, in this case it's C. This is where the melody should usually end (or start since it's a loop). Add more melodies still using only the notes that are in the chord, you can do this untill you have hundreds of melodies playing at the same time it wil never sound wrong, probably boring but not wrong. If you feel adventurous and want to try out a chord change just pick another chord and do the same thing. Try to make a melody with a few of your favourite chords. >Melodies< (Sorry about the wierd hickup, im still a newbie when it comes to softsynths.) Ok, that doesn't sound very exighting. I would suggest we use a scale instead of just a chord. A wild guess tells me that the C minor scale might work over Cm. Use the notes of the chord as a base but put some other notes from the scale in this time. In the example here i moved a few of the notes upwards to the next scale note as the melody progresses, this trick is commonly used in all kinds of music. Use this trick everytime you want to make an instant dancefloor killar-anthem with killaarghh build-up (in the buildup you can keep moving a few notes up the scale for as long as you want, just remember that you should try to avoid use of the base note during your build up since this will release the tension your trying to build up) Then there is a chord change (remember to move the chord notes to fit the new chord). >More melodies< You can fit alot more melodies together but try to avoid playing notes that are only a half-step apart at the same time since that will usually not sound good. If you want to make a hypnotic melody you should try to make a melody that doesn't seem to have a start or end. ...Where does it start, Where does it end, Nobody knows... I have stuff to do. It's probably better not to think about any theory or rules when making melodies, after a while they will come naturally. You will hear when it sound's good. One trick though is to try to use alot of differnet durations and velocities for the notes. That's an easy way to make your melodies sound more interresting. >Variations< As you can hear in the second half of this example this melody becomes more interresting with different durations on the notes.
