I've been reading different opinions on this one. Does the quality of the disc drive influence the quality of your rips? I've read that the type of drive doesn't matter for the quality of the rip, since it is digital 1 to 1 conversion. Others do promote better / more expensive drives for ripping. I just tried to rip a cd with EAC on one computer, it had to error correct the first track for + 1h and it was still only at 30% for that track. I just inserted it in my other pc with another disc drive (of the same price) and it rips the track in 3 minutes. So apparently the type of drive can affect the speed of error correction, or just being able to rip a track or not. But could the first drive with the very slow error correction lead to a rip of less quality?

Pure Forest for me I even call it "oldskool Forest", because he's still true to his style since the first Schlab cd's, and it's more melodic than common Forest. I even play his tracks in Oldskool Goa sets.

Totally agree on this. The essence of a psytrance track is the story, where it takes you. You need a buildup in order to enjoy the climax. You need the break in order to long for another buildup etc. The parts of the track and the compositions need to be just in the right place and order for it to have the best effect on people. So I wouldn't want to listen to a set that cuts up all the thought out work by the artist and puts parts elsewhere. But I am interested in what the result can be, I will check out your set

That's not true. Cd's have a limited lifespan due to oxidation and cd rot. The lifespan of cd's (not cdr) is about 30 - 50 years. Wow, I didn't know HD's lose magnetic power! I only figured I would have to transfer all the data every 4-5 years onto new HD's so I can prevent loss due to crashes. Damn, there goes my superplan! Does anyone know how fast this magnetic loss can go? And are SSD's safer as in more durable?

I tested out toothpaste (a "gritty" whitening kind) today for the first time and it helped! EAC was trying to rip a track for 45 mins. I canceled the operation, cleaned the bigger scratch with toothpaste, rinsed it with water, dryed it, and it worked! It took only 2,5 mins for that track. But now I wonder if this could have consequences for the cd in the future, since moist/water can cause the individual layers to come loose from eachother?

Hehe, I can imagine that! Now that I look at it, I've posted quite a lot here in a few days... I guess that's because I already knew what was going on here and because the topics here are the ones I find the most interesting. On our Belgian forum it's become less informative. I wanted to start some topics there but I just didn't do the effort, and now I can see the exaxt same ones were already being discussed here Grtz!

What is the best way to clean a cd when certain tracks have become unplayable? I've heard and read different opinions about this. One study says that cd's have to be stored in a dry environment, while other say that you can clean your cd with soapy water for example. http://www.household-management-101.com/how-to-clean-a-cd.html This link contains the most common tips. You lost me at the second line or something So you play your own tracks/pieces of music? And what genre do you play? Breakbeat? I was talking about playing trance btw. 2 hours = about 20 - 22 tracks, so easier to remember which ones.

This I have never understood. When I play a 2h set on a party and people come to ask which tracks I have played, I can name almost all of them! Even when I was not prepared and improvised the entire set, I can still name almost all of them. When one track is playing and I am looking for the one to go next, it has to be the best track possible that is in my case. So afterwards I remember them, because I've spent minutes to find and try to mix them in. "Minutes" is a long time considering you only have 4 - 5 minutes to do the mix.

I've been following both genres since they started growing and I really love "Forest" (or what I can call Forest) and I dislike "Dark Psy". It all comes down to one element: I don't like when the patterns get too mechanical (//Dark Psy) and I love the more organic and deep sounds AND patterns that are composed in a thought out way (//Forest). Example: Encephalopaticys uses the same typical bass structures and pattern sounds as most Dark Psy artists, but places them in a slower / better to follow pace and makes every sound count. So that feels more natural / Forest to me. Whereas most Dark Psy artists throw it all in your face, hoping that you will freak out at some point. And yeah, the track above me is my most favorite Forest track...

The lifespan of original cd's (not CDR) can very between 25 - 100 yrs. So I'm going to back up everything on HD's so I can still dance to trance when I'm 80, and also for the sake of our kids in the future!

Yeah, weird isn't it? I Always think it's because the people who are really into the music and who tend to dig deaper are also the more active members on fora. While the dancefloor is filled with people who "just" like to party and who are into the more direct, hard and bassy stuff. I might be wrong...

Dark Psy is the psy genre that I like the least tracks/artists of. But the ones I do like, I really really like... When it starts getting too fast, technical, breaky or just random I'm out. I don't like any High Tech / Psycore (not even Kindzadza and Psykovsky). I only seem to like it when it sounds more organic and atmospheric. I noticed that a lot of the artists that make slower/deeper Dark are now being categorised as "Forest" more, like Derango, Encephalopaticys... Those are the artists I really like Derango / Purosurpo / Hallucinogenic Horses Traskel Attoya Encephalopaticys Taigan Sun(set) Atriohm Technical Hitch Captain Kirk ... (and you're hearing this from a full time oldskool lover )

Sometimes I wonder about this too. But then I think: What is an addiction? To say it in quantities: On an average day I am online for about 2 hours. 1 hour fora / chat, 1 hour looking for new music / movies / information (nature, tech stuff, the news...). So yeah that's a lot actually. But it's the only way to find art, stay informed and to stay in touch with friends that I otherwise couldn't keep contact with. These things keep me healthy as an individual, so I don't call it an addiction. It's more like a convient means to fulfill my needs

I notice the same habbits in lineups everywhere too. I've been going to Psy parties since '05 but only started going to international festivals in '10 and I was amazed by the amount of Dark Psy, sometimes even during the morning + noon. I'm happy to see that a lot of the night time artists are evolving more into slower/deeper "Forest" style (or is it just me who thinks this?). I prefer thought out Forest over Dark Psy anytime though, even at night. For me, I can only stand to listen to Dark Psy for 1 - 2 hours max. For me it's the best when the music accompagnies the time of the dya: Forest until +- 5AM, Twilight/Experimental until +-7AM and Morning afterwards. But I can imagine that others have different needs! Always interesting to read about it

Hehe, today in the car I was thinking of starting the same thread here... Some people who are not into trance tend to find Forest and Dark Psy "too hard", "agressive" or even "demonic". Yet I find the dancefloor one of the most calming places to be even when this music is playing. It doesn't make people feel agressive, but puts them in a trance (which is what it is all about). It's weird how I can enjoy the darkest forest and the most melodic oldskool just as much, just when played at the right time when I need it! At night I need dark and challenging music, at twilight the more trippy and experimental stuff and in the morning the more floating and melodic trance.

Wouldn't that take a whole lot of time to do again? I wouldn't be at ease while taking that risk... Also, cds have a limited lifespan, so I'm backing them up for the future. Some of my early '90s cds are already starting to play more vague than they used to. This is how I do it and is one of the safest ways: - All the files I have (also ripped cd's) until 2013 are on 3 external HD's: 2 in my own house (I always connect one at the time to transfer from my internal, so that makes sure it won't all go down from electrical problems) and 1 offsite (at my gf's house). - All the files that I collect since 2013 are on 3 external HD's: same as above. This way I don't ever have to connect my other 3 HD's again, so that cancels out electrical problems, shocks etc. But basically if you use just use one series of external HD's (2 in your own house and 1 offsite) you should be very safe! About waranty and failures: A HD is one of the least certain electrical devices. The series within the same brand can have different quality. So always buy different brands and series of HD's to make sure. And even identical HD's can crash the first day, or can last +6 years long. Since ripping takes a lot of time, I installed my old pc in my room only for ripping cds... maybe a tip?

What do you mean by "Psy"? For most people Psytrance is the universal name for all genres, others use it only for all post 2000 music and others tend to use it for '97 - '00 stuff (when the term was first widely used). I'm just curious

Also look out for Hallucinogenic Horses (collaboration with other artists) and Purosurpo (one of the two Derango guys) there!

Hello! Some time ago one of the last tracks that was played at a Belgian Goa party was called 'Circulus Vitiosus'. That's the only info the dj gave away and until now the only other reference I found was the track 'Psilocybin - Circulus Vitiosus'. It was named by a member at Tranceaddict.com. But I can't find that track anywhere (I don't think it's released). It might be that one. Or does anyone have another idea? At the moment it sounded like the best trance track I had ever heard... So I'm hoping to find it!

Hello everyone! I'm Tom. I've been visiting this forum for a long time now, but never really posted much. I'm an active member at our Belgian psy forum and do some dj'ing around Belgium and I think it's a shame I don't come here more often. So I made this account to do something about that I love the topics and the way you can have an open discussion here without falling into the typical "this is better than that" discussion. So I guess I'll see you all around!

Personally, I hate Derango's music... Because with every other trance track I hear it has made me think "not as good as Derango..." These guys are the kings of psychedelic trance for me, their sound and composition feels so natural and energetic and there's Always a bunch of surprises in every track, especially near the end. Whereas most Forest tracks tend to spiral down near the end (although that also has its psychedelic effect ofcourse). So best live sets I've ever heard must be Derango's. (Luckily a LOT of other Forest artists are getting very close lately )
