  1. I figured I talked a lot about what I was going to get, so...well, here's what is on the way here [being shipped]:

    Posted Image

A revision 3.2 Prophet 5 with factory fitted MIDI. Is my spoiled replacement for the Roland MKS-80 ;)

    Posted Image

A Juno 60! I liked the Juno 106 but cannot stand to even worry to think about voice chip failures. After much research, the Juno 60 will be a fair replacement with a dcb->midi converter box. The Juno 60 is said to be more fat, which is cool.

An Alpha Juno 2. A replacement for the MKS-50. Except this is the keyboard version with a few modifications such as a memory cartridge addition and such. Still requires a PG-300 to edit though, which I sold with the MKS-50 so I have to find a new one. I really love the sounds of this. It's been used a lot in trance, I know that much...and it's an excellent board for the price.

And I am waiting to receive my Genelec 1029A's too. All should be received by the end of this week, beginning of next. Woot!

  2. still in safe hands my friend

HAH! Hey brother, haven't talked to you in like, FOREVER!@ Glad to read you still have the cd and I'm sure most of the rest. I did it again, I sold all my CDs to my bro Damon, he's on the board, you'll see him in the for sale section. Sold him all of my vinyl too finally. Getting affiliated with the more ambient side of tunes these days. ;)

  3. Yes i bought around 20% of my collection in normal cdstore. This would be some 150cds :)

I bought Dimension 5 - Transdimensional from a cd/record store on the east coast, original intastella edition, brand new, for $9.50USD with shipping :) When Froogle.com was like super beta still, it scored me that release. :) I read about froogle on slashdot.org and was like hmm, I should try that and find some rare psy cds, and sure enough, brand new copy of D5-TD from Intastella, 6 dollars plus 3.50 shipping/handling woot! They had other CDs listed too but were out of stock. Unfortunately, that was their last copy of the d5. Then I bought five copies of Xenomorph's Cassandra's Nightmare from an eBay store for 5euros a piece :) The guy who had the store owned a death metal record storefront in Germany. I think he confused this xenomorph with the other xenomorph heehee. :)

  4. I think we all should stop this argument about monitors. Sorry, I didn't mean to bring it up. It really should just boil down to who's doing it, how long they've been doing it, and whether or not their ears are trained enough on their particular equipment in their studio to do a good job.

The proof isn't so much in the pot [the studio], but the pudding [the track coming out of the studio]. I've found all sorts of opinions online and there really is no right or wrong judgment call.

  5. Oh, and the analog synth that IF I could have one would be a Prophet T8, 8 voice polyphony, the first and I think ONLY analog synthesizer offering poly-aftertouch and built like a tank. I really have a fond liking for keyboards that have a panel at an angle with a nice "shelf" for storing your food/dinner/drinks.

Like I say, despite it lacking features, I'd buy for a midi controller a Roland MKB-300 or MKB-1000 before I bought one of the new ones. It's all about the shelf for soda/drinks and food. ;)

    Here are pictures:

  6. So I checked it out.. I didnt expect a keyboard to be like that, first it was weird but than again it looks awesome.. Anyways Im not pleased with the blue led, how could they put blue led on a synth that has red buttons? And yeah the price.. Radias is twice more expensive compared to my alesis when u include that keyboard.. I wanted to make a simple change, add a little for Radius, change my bitstream for m-audio axiom which is twice cheaper and control korg with axiom.. Now I see the keyboard and I want it but also its expensive.. Maybe I should just start to save and maybe till Im 50 Ill get Nord lead 3 so I dont have to think about selling the synth after some time.. Although Radius has 24 voices which is impressive.. Theres a lot of calculation to do still and I have to read many reviews of radias so well see... Anways some people on the forums even compare it with nord but I think thats too much..

And which analog synth is your synth of choice?

I'm really retro in the sense. I attempted to modernize, and I partially succeeded. I ended up buying the Andromeda A6 along with more vintage gear. As for current gear, I've got a Prophet 5 revision 3.2, Andromeda A6, Juno 60, and an Alpha Juno 2. My next buy I was thinking a new monophonic synth, but the other day at my buddy's studio, I played with his Pro-One monophonic and I think that has to be the best god damn monophonic ever made!@# Hands down!

You know what I feel about the blue LEDs, you could just swap them out. Doing simple mods as such to modern digital equipment isn't a horrible thing. Honestly, doing it to analog gear can totally change the way the analog stuff sounds either for better or for worse. That's the biggest deal with modifying analog, you never know what you're going to get out of it after changing capacitors and such. With the digital stuff, all it is for the most part is a motorola dsp chip combined with some c++ so it's not going to affect the sound output which is nice. You'll always know what to get.

The Nord Lead 3 would be awesome. I would get a Nord way before I got a virus, however, I am disappointed that they're not working to make a nice small/compact version of the nord like Virus has done with their Indigo and recent success on the Polaris TI. It'd be nice to have a nice compact Nord 3 VA with a board.

Anyways, for shits and giggles, this reminds me of the Virus Indigo board I saw :)-

Do what you want man, really. The hardest thing is to get anybody elses opinion on any gear really. As with the monitor debate, it's not what you have, it's how you put it to use. And so long as you understand what you're doing with it and what you aim to achieve with a particular piece of gear, than only you should be able to determine ultimately what works for you. I would though take a Nord 3 over the Radius in a heart beat :)

  7. Thanks man, I have more confidence now.. I think Ill get it,, Just to sell my alesis.. I didnt planed to buy it with keyboard but will check it out to.. I hope it has velocity sensitive keyboard..

It is indeed velocity sensitive so there's no let down there. The module itself is pretty intuitive. The keyboard isn't necessary, but it's what, like 100-150 dollars more to have it and it matches well and your wheels are LEDified!@ Blue which stinks. Red LEDs are by far the only LEDs to have in any electronic equipment :) [for the sake of our eyes and night time].

    Anyways, keep us updated.

  8. Sorry, I must say that mastering1.com site's is full of shit and that guy there DOES use NS10's as his mastering pair. After reading his site thoroughly through, it became quite laughable and I feel sorry for any musician who buy's into his shit.

I get the point regarding NS10's, I misread too deeply into it. I stand corrected and admit.

But for the humor out of all of this, I suggest reading mastering1.com's site, it's really funny.

    -d

http://absy.com/ABSMMI/ITV/TLA/ukitvtla.html <- as far as mixing is concerned, you cannot diss this guy for using the NS10's as his main mixing pair. If you do, you have no credit :-P but I am also reading that older pairs of the NS10s were of better quality, had awesome bass response, etcetera, and throughout the years, Yamaha changed the design.

  9. Devious - Mixing /= mastering. Do some basic research before you spout off on topics like this. None of the mastering studios I've ever been in have used NS10s for mastering. Although they are excellent tools for mixing tracks on (as stated in your quote below), being as they are a kind of magnifying-glass for problems in the mids and highs, they are not accurate speakers - particularly in the low end - and that is needed in mastering.

I check my masters (and mixes) on a fairly crappy hi-fi, just to make sure or certain aspects; I'm confident my mastering translates well both to large PA setups and shitty laptop speakers. But no way would I use them as my primary monitors.

Well, here we go now, I guess I should say an American de facto standard, sorry:

  10. Dear devious i really don't want to argue with you and my apologies to the author of this topic for the flood!

NS10 omg yes, we had them in my college in mixing room years ago! Nice sweet monitors for reference purpose only! But NO WAY for mastering in any costs, i repeat is only reference monitors, same as my kitchen radio and car stereo of my granny. So, if master sounds OK on those, than it's certainly will be good on any sound system!

    PEACE

    Okay, how's this for example:

You take a crappy mix, you play it on mackies, events, genelec, adams, whatever nearfields in the mid to upper price range....it sounds okay, don't tell me it doesn't, they will make it warm and bright and fuzzy..and it will sound okay.

then you take that same crappy mix and you have it coming out the ugly aggressive ns10's, oh man this mix SUCKS!@# it's like a negative on the scale for listening while on the other monitors, it was like a 5-6 out of a rating of 10. as i said, a mediocre result. surely you can continue to go back and use the better gear and fix it, but it'll take a lot more time than just learning the crappy and non-bass responsive ns10's and just making it sound good on those crappy speakers in the first place.

that is why THEY, the NS10's are the de facto standard of all studios, period. you're right, end of argument.

    :>

    -d

  11. Here's a quote from skidmore's academic site where they teach mastering:

"These are our Yamaha NS-10 studio monitors. They are used as our "near-field" monitors. They are a standard in the professional recording industry. Students often choose these monitors for their mixing work because they simulate the sound of smaller consumer speakers (car radio speakers, tv speakers, etc.). When mixing, it's important to try your mix over as many different sets of speakers (including headphones) as possible."

Should I quote about 200 more academic music schools as well as professional hollywood/industry standard studios? I guess for trance, everybody has a high end pair of monitors sitting around so it's best to have the best and not have crappy and the best. You'd be amazed if you were some poor bloke, listening to a psytrance mixdown - in a cd player with shitty speakers, like say, my radioshack computer speakers, or even plugged into a television set using the tv speaker as your sound - done on some Genelec 1032's or something. It would completely SUCK and that's why I think trance in general has poor quality, you can't just pop it in a cd player and hear the subtle layers of the mix, only the brighter parts. People and their "high end" mixing gear in electronic music who fail to see the proper procedure in doing a final mix down, then again, Trance's target aim isn't the consumer market in general, just a select few, I suppose.

    -d

edit: i know this has been brought up before on psynews too, the quality of a mix down to the final product on shelves and how it sounds horribly mastered. i do honestly think a lot of it is this "must have AWESOME gear" while putting aside the actual technique used in professional recording studios that are making millions of dollars a year with their sales and it's not just the music, it's the quality of the product/the mix down that's being sold. Trance has always been the ultimate genre for attacks on mastering critique and I am beginning to wonder if it really isn't because the people mastering it suck, but because they just choose the best equipment possible that doesn't let them know what it really sounds like on everything else crappy which most of we consumers are constantly using anyways [like my computer speakers =]]

  12. PLZDOTELL!

    -d

For the record, I'd take the big names who do Hollywood production and such over somebody who would tell me otherwise who does trance and makes 10 dollars a year off his services. SRSLY!

My statement comes from lots of studying, and learning, and asking questions not from psynews, but from people who own hundred-thousand dollar studios who do this every day for their food on the plate.

So, I wonder, how is that a bullshit statement? Really, the NS-10's are referenced as studio monitors, but most big studios use them as their pair to make sure that they can get the proper sound so the mix can sound good on anything basically. We're talking 2 dollar speakers all the way up to your Adams, Events, Genelecs....It's just that way.

Do I need to reference big names who state this? Should I link you to their comments? I've been srsly evaluating monitors for the last month now and these come up quite a bit on a audio-pro site and yes, for someone making music, they're shitty, they're not recommended, but for somebody who's mastering, they're on a top list to have.

Fact is, not everybody has JBLs, or Infinity's or whatever else there is high-end in their cars, their computer speakers, etcetera. The Yamaha NS10's will compensate for this overall but I shouldn't argue with you, URJUZGUNNASAYIZBULLSHIT even if I link about 50 different owners of high-end mastering/production studios.

    k? k!

    -d

  13. Mastering is not only software - you also need very good monitors, good acoustics and a lot of experience.

You're wrong about the very good monitors. Most mastering takes place on Yamaha NS10's in major production studios. Why? Because if you can get it to sound good on those crappy Yamaha's, it'll sound good on anything.

So if you want to make music? Have great monitors. But if you're going to master it, don't use your best speakers. Usually, you'll go from let's say those Yamaha's, and once you think you're finished, you'll have a do-over on your better monitors to finish the process. One set of monitors of very high quality is only going to get you mediocre results if that in the end. Must have crappy and good monitors :)

    -d

  14. thank you for your help, devious!

I already knew the thread at matrixsynth, i started it. I'm sorry for the extra effort, but I want to reach as many people as possible because this seems to be a very seldom problem and spare-parts don't exist anymore.

    regards - mentris

No, that was posted on a mailing list by matrix. I was just reporting to you. There are far more people on the mailing list than visit matrix's site :) that's where he got the information and I posted it here before he posted it on matrixsynth. Figured I'd getit to you faster, depending on what you read first.

  15. What do u think about korg radius? I plan to sell my alesis micron and buy that korg rack edition.. But that means I have to sell my CME bitstream midi controller and buy m-audio axiom with keyboard cause synth will be rack.. Or should I buy korg with keyboard.. Is it worth it? Should I change my gear? Is it so much better?

I'm not very fond of digital stuff, but really, in all honesty, when I played with the P08, I had to touch the Radias. I think it'd be a much better upgrade for you to sell those bits and get the Radias. I would recommend getting it with the keyboard, it's a damn nifty setup and a nice feel. I see a lot of gearslutz are envious of it too for all the reasons that are sounds.

In my opinion, if I wasn't ANALOGwhore, it'd be the second digisynth I'd get, first being a nord lead 2x...

    -d

  16. I really think that as more artists jump on the freedom of music bandwagon, they should start taking notes on mastering as soon as possible. It's cool if somebody wants to spend 2 weeks learning a VST/VSTi or synthesizer. Maybe divide it up and conquer it all. It's really the only way I see a resourceful solution coming to terms.

Or maybe we need to start having more than one person labeled in a group. "me, him, her" where me and him are doing the instruments and her, she's doing the mastering but comes along to all our gigs and does some crazy sound mixing with the main board, you get my drift.

It's really up to the community to become creative and unless they want mastered songs to flood the data streams, it's just going to have to be raw and untouched. I for one find it intriguing to devote time learning all realms of music from synthesis to understanding mastering as well. I don't later on in the future want to release something until it's fully cut. I also won't have the necessary resource of time to do it for random people either being a single dad and I sure don't like paying people for something I am only considering a hobby at this point.

So alas, I say...all producers, if you spend a day making music for 4-6 hours, maybe add or cut one hour out of that time to study a bit on mastering technique and knowing sound mixing better. That's what needs to be promoted, I think! A complete production/mastering suite all in each music makers home/studio :)

Other than that, Colin is offering to help you, a little. I doubt there's going to be someone who does it professionally on a day to day basis charging hourly or per track who's going to commit to using up their resources they have to pay for to do something for free regardless of any revolution [my own term ;) don't take offense] that takes place. There's a lot of money in mastering more so than there seems to be in music itself these days.

  18. thanx!!

so you know... word just made it out to a few thousand peoples. ;)

    ---

I’m forwarding this for someone else. I thought I’d see if anyone on the list had an ideas.

“I've got an Oberheim MAtrix 6 since last week and unfortunately the Aftertouch doesn't work properly SadIt's by far not the only Problem... but the hardest to fix yet. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. This applies for the upper octaves, the lower octaves work always fine.

I assume, that the aftertouch-bar/track under the keys is broken an needs to be replaced. But I couldn't find a spare-part yet. Do you know where I could find that? Would aftertouch-bars of other synths work aswell? If so - which ones? Where to get?”

    cheers,

  19. Well, Jean Michel says that everything is done live in the video. And I really don't think these guys need attention badly so that they fake around, this is highly professional sound and highly professional players. I got the impression that pretty much everything is done live. At least people play constantly on synths, maybe some sub-layer that only consists of a few sounds was programmed or recorded readily and just a button needed to be pressed and not every note played manually, but the rest I'm pretty sure that they did live ... at least more than 90%. And I also don't think there was any after-mastering or any cosmetics as they did the recording live in front of an audience (only special guests AFAIK), so I'm quite sure they did all that you can see and hear in that video live. I'm only speaking about my impressions though.

Otto, if you buy the DVD, be sure to see it first on a big screen, I think this is a must. I won't buy the DVD anyway, can't imagine this really having the special sound atmosphere and overwhelming 3D image quality that I had the pleasure to experience. That synth in the cinema room above the audience with Jean Michel's hand practically reaching into the room to twist knobs on it ... I'll never forget that :) ... and I'm sure you can never have this at home in that way...

For the record, yes it's all entirely live and every one of those players has a part in the track. When Jean plays out live, you can see his awesome vintage modular sequencers and shit. THey're the SHIT! So, for anybody who may wonder, yes, it's 100% live recording of him and his colleagues making the music everybody enjoys from Mr. Jarre.

=] And I need to buy the DVD too. Only cause I doubt this will be on a big screen here in the United States, or at least in my part of the world here. :)

  20. this is just showing off a bit, it has little to do with creating sounds and composing synth music like jarre's oxygene

yeah, he can play, play fast and control the synth (synths are easier to play fast than piano)...but there are countless keyboard players who could do something similar if they knew how to use the synth

I know I know, I envy his playing skills is all. I lean more towards Jarre's music too. I'm just envious and which I could play a mad monophonic solo like that while talking, snorting coke, and having my peepee sucked!@ That'd be K00L!!!@

    SRSLY4RL!

    Love,

  21. So, yeah, I just bought a prophet 5. Now to find a bunch of spare parts to keep it running forever. I am forfeiting the purchase of the Prophet 08 because this came up at a cost of only 1498USD :) which is 501 dollars cheaper than the prophet 08. WoOt!

It also has the midi-upgrade installed. My heart is beating fast cause the guy emailed me and said he had just put it up on ebay!@#!# I was like NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO and I don't think anybody thought he was serious at a price of 1499, but he has reputable feedback woot!

    k!

    ;)

  22. I saw a Jarre clip recently featuring his group and him. I was blown away by the gear involved. Oh my, the minimoogs, the moog voyagers, the moog this the moog that, the modulars, and the other various ancient keyboards. He's definitely awesome, but by no means could he ever top this dude....

well, here's the clip of the 3d shit

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNoGDlXQgSU...;max-results=20

    I love it!

    ;)

here's the dude that jarre wishes he could be like, fear that mad solo and watch that one hand. Be it known that minimoog is a monophonic meaning one note at a time and this dude puts on a most desirable solo act, wonder how many years he has in playing, check it:

I was blown away by that second piece, wow!

But that oxygene 3d seems pretty cool. If not for being a huge fan of Jarre's stuff, for the equipment he utilizes. Unf. It takes money to upkeep all that ancient early 70's->early 80's shit. lots of money
