  1. Im digging this... Does anyone have any recommendations for albums in this genre?

A lot of the best stuff doesnt get released on albums. You are better off searching for the single tracks. Also on that website, there are loads and loads of sweet dub/darkstep mixes with tracklistings. Shop around :)

  2. There's a trojan embedded in the site somehow, and has been there for a couple of weeks now. People who are using IE to access the site are getting smacked around. It's still there, as I found earlier at work today. Seems there's some suspicion that a person connected with the site is responsible, whereas others think it's a bot. I don't know whether off-topic is closed for a month for safety or for punishment.

    Shit.

I thought it was some uber-ban on everyone for all the abuse off-topic has taken over the last few years. Hope it gets sorted out. In the meantime, can we just treat General as the new off-topic?

  3. Yeah it took me at least 15 tries switching between FF & IE buy it finally worked after trying open then save file at the same time. Glad I kept trying though, this is good shit OD. What genre is darkstep? Is this like a sub genre of some kind?

Its a sub-genre of dubstep and drum and bass, but its far darker, even if its only around 80bpm most of the way.

Darkstep is more twisted, deeper basslines, more aggressive. Kinda the Darkpsy to the Full-on.

    Its teh bollocks.

  4. I don't have experience in that department, but have you done a search for "Fruity Loops Sidechain Compression" in YouTube or Google? They often have decent tutorials there. Also you might get more advice if you ask your question in Music Making rather than Promotion. Stuff gets buried here pretty quickly. May the Schwartz be with you.

Thanks. I have found some shnifty tutorials on youtube already. How to make killar basslines etc. I will search for side chain compression on there too.

I spend over an hour searching for how to STOP a synth playing in its tracks. without dragging the echo etc. I remember from somewhere it involves making a duplicate synth, linking them somehow, and then when the other synth plays, it acts as an indicator to immediately stop any sounds from the other one. Hanvt been able to find out how to do this though... meh.

I have sampled some awesome clips from the Mighty Boosh season 3 dvds though for my next track. The best one being:

"When it comes to drug taking, Kurk leaves us all in the dust. (Tony Harrison) I mean what is he looking at?? (Head Shaman) No one knows. Kurk is travelling far into the astral realm. (Tony Harrison) He's off his tits! (Head Shaman) He's on the shores of oblivion.......Kurk, if you can hear us....simply nod."

I piss myself laughing every time I hear it.

  5. compression is a tricky one, and pretty boring stuff imo

It is not an FX that alters the sound, it only influences the volume level. You could also call it an automated volume dynamic.

imo, you need to play your music at loud volume in order to tweak this properly.

The fruityloops standard compressors are pretty good, compressors need to be basic. i like to have alot of bling & bells on other sound-altering FX, but not for compressors, 3 or 4 buttoned comp VST's are often the best ones.

Threshold= a roll-in point for the compressor, in Db.

ratio= this is the relation between the amount of db added and the treshold. So 1:1 will have no effect. Maybe this is why it doesn't sound different :D hehe

attack= how fast does the compressor react.

mostly ratio is between 2:1 to 4:1 for trance, then you play around with treshold & attack, + decay, release etc, if you have them on the compressor you're using. But Treshold, ratio & attack are the basics of a compressor.

Thanks dude, I will play around with that.

    One more question though...

In Fruity, I have seen a very cool shortcut done, but dunno how to do it.

In the Piano Roll, Ive seen a guy put 3 blocks down for the bassline, then select the blocks (they go red), then shorten all the notes authomatically. He can shorten them up and down. Other than do this manually, i dont know how to do this...

  6. Following up on my previous thread, where I got some nice tips, I want to ask if anyone could help me with a few more questions I have with regards to Fruityloops 7. Any help would be greatly appreciated...

    Kicks

How does one get a sweet compressed psy kick. I am aware of adding the kick to an FX channel and using the compression filter, but for some reason, it dont sound much different. Could someone explain to me in retard terms how to create a nice compressed kick? Is there a good vst for this?

    Percussion

My percussion sounds flat and boring. What is a good sequence for percussion and making it sound a bit cool as opposed to crap. What VST is good for psy percussion? any tips guys?

Thanks very much! You guys helped a lot with my previous questions.

    Evan.

  7. I'm really dissapointed, i expected some extremely crappy bullshit track which i could break down till the last bit.

    BUt it's actually pretty good.

You need more dynamics (FX/automations) on all your tracks though. It sounds really raw.

I don't hear any delays, reverbs, compressors or EQ's, nada.....but you really need that stuff.

Compress the kick, EQ the bass & percussion, reverb on the vocals and add delays to leads, some distortion could work fine too in this track.

And pan some stuff, everything 100% stereo-image is boring. On a big system these panned tracks create psychoacoustics through phasingeffects, it spreads the sound into space (that's how you experience it at least).

I think your composition and sounds are ok, but it all has to be more dynamic. dynamic volume, pan, fx, automation, compression, fade in, out, mix, cross, phasing effects, etc etc etc

Yeah I would, if I knew how to do all that stuff. Im pretty crap at this. It is very raw atm, but I was planning to add some panning and compress the kick. I totally agree the percussion is stock standard boring bullshit. Any tips on how I can make this sound more interesting?

I am a total noob at this btw...
