1. The end result is still "use your ears", although a DJ who has done serious harmonic mixing study (which I think will take roughly a year to do well, give or take for individual talent) will have an advantage since their ear is "educated" as it were. BTW I think DJs who came to DJing with a solid background in some other musical instrument pretty much have the same advantage so one's milage in study harmonic mixing might vary

yeah, musical education makes a big difference.. i studied music seriously for many years, so I can usually trust my ears to tell me what chord i'm about to create, and what kind of mood it's going to set.

But I think anyone can do it just as well with a bit of practice - learning how to recognize certain tones and progressions of chords isn't that hard if you have the ear for it and are willing to put some time into it. Also I think listening to a lot of classical music can help in that respect, since classical music is built on harmonic progressions.

Harmonically mixed sets do sound a lot better, btw..

  2. I don't like this remix all that much. Generic dancefloor material, though it'll probably go over well once or twice with the fullon crowd, for nostalgia's sake.

I really like Eat Static's track from that same compilation. The only track on there that 'does it' for me. :)

  3. yes i have checked the Nommos i have digitaria... wait... had... digitaria... hehe.. sold it :P and half a dozen songs spread on compilations... when i mean minimal is the arrangement, yes there is all this shit flying buy and there is strong pounding and usually a good groove, but the production level is minimal if you ask me, there's way better stuff out there thats dark and trippy... imo

hope that cleared any misconfussion  ;)

I agree, Digitaria sucks... I was never a huge Nommos or Goa Gil fan, but I think lately he's been getting a lot better. His Divine Dozens are off the hook. His own recent stuff is much better produced, imo. and quite highly psychedelic, imo.

i mean, i go through and listen to pretty much EVERY release that comes out, and some Nommos tracks (not all, mind you) are as good as any 'dark' psy out there. I don't think he's on the same level musically as, say, Fractal Cowboys, Zik, Jellyheadz, Derango, or Kindzadza - but compared to the mass of shitty dark psy out there, Nommos stands out for sure.

  4. well you know cinos ;)

point being, they aren't technically musical, the nommos bases a lot of his qualities on the knowledge Arianne has of Djembe african drumming... which to be honest i haven't seen reflect very much, but what the fuck do i know of djembe african drumming...

it's harsh music, 148-50 BMP's and what they do is not bad, but is a bit minimal, and devoid of any real juice unless you like the unrelentless hard pounding...

    dude

that is simply not true. a lot of the stuff is not minimal at all. have you heard much new nommos? and the music that Goa Gil plays in general? maybe you should go theck his top 10 or whatever - all the tracks i've heard from the last 2 or 3 dd's are fucking unbelievably trippy.

  5. Well it ain't Penta at all to me, totally lost his unique touch... so therefore it became just average 'dark' psy imo.. oh and all those lame samples !! RRRR... most of them are even very out of pace.

try listening to the penta album under the proper circumstances: at sunrise in the forest, after drinking some spiced tea ;), with the wolves howling in the distance to the sound of his music. OMFG... it was one of the most amazing experiences ever. That music is PERFECT.

  6. Hall of BLAME this year:

    Penta - Funraiser

    VA - Nowhereland

    ... need i say more

    383487

    I disagree..

For me Penta's album is by far the best of the year.

    Derango a distant second.

    Nystagmus or Sensient probably third.

a more complete top 10 coming at the end of December. Meanwhile anxiously waiting for v/a Trauma Trance in the mail.... B)

  7. This Bamboo Forest "album" is the most despicable god-awful piece of eurotrance I've ever heard from a "psytrance" act. It even has cheesy vocals that rap like 'touch me, touch me' in one track, mmmkay?

move over, Hypersonic - this takes the cake as the worst album of 2005. <_<

  8. Its stupid since they can get a fine for it. Tarrantino is a very smart man, and makes all his movie titles trademarks hehe (Not all producers do that). If he sees that, he COULD fuck that label bigtime... lets hope it does not happen :) But it is a complete rip off hahaha :)

    381859

yeah well.. it's a Russian label, so i doubt anything is going to happen to them. ;)

  9. gripe about headphones..

    - i've never liked Sony 700s (or Pioneer 1000s because of the same problem) because they're made for DJs and they amplify sound in the low frequency range (the kick/bass) while not reproducing a lot of the upper frequencies correctly. I like Sony 600s, Sony 7506, Sennheiser HD 25, or some other Studio reference headphones to listen to music.

    -2 cents.

  10. bullshit, amigo

can and have, extremely deep and trancy

would it have happened to me had i not experienced psychedelics beforehand? no idea, maybe not

do i believe ppl have gone much further w/o psychedelics than i have with? absolutely

    379070

I wouldn't argue w/that at all - I am sure that's true. But as it relates to music, I am not sure you can be in a deep yogic meditative state and be digging on some extremely twisted psytrance madness at the same time.

  11. lol, ever heard of MFG...? They are pretty damn religious, never took any drugs... And their music... My God (literally :P)... Not really full on :) You can understand it and make it even without drugs ;) not everyone has to take drugs to "understand" the music

    379026

mmmkay.. i don't believe anyone's PR, but i guess there may be an exception or two.
