Midi Miliz - Antistat

Midi Miliz evolves on the good track of minimalism. This is less minimal than

what they used to do. Anyway I got tired of this album very quickly, except

for Restore My Soul which is really a good minimal mysterious track :)

6.5/10

Good album. The fact is these guys are doing something critical here: they're

taking Psy-Trance and bending it into another direction, and their style is

rubbing off on others, which means it can only be good. Change is always good,

and these guys are changing things. Meanwhile, their music is a lot of fun to

listen to, this album included. 8.5/10

Date: 2001

Track listing:

01. 06'38" Antistat

02. 06'59" Nut

03. 07'45" Low Cargo

04. 07'55" Blackbox

06. 07'38" Restore My Soul

07. 06'44" Instant ID

08. 07'59" Force Fed

09. 07'24" Scandy Candy

Review:

Arne Schaffhausen and Wayan Raabe (also Spirallianz) have delivered a heavy,

evolving & groovy ride. Responsible for some great 12" and singles, Midi Miliz

have promised a lot and here they prove worthy. The album starts with the

title track - nice opener, brewing pings and lifting beats surrounded by a

wave of sound. Nüt is next - groovy lines and wonderful percussive sounds and

wait for that bass to start flowing funk?ooh la la. Low Cargo; this one comes

in waves and twirls; suddenly it becomes funky, and then drips many noises -

continually upbeat. Blackbox; dream-like intro, from here the track builds and

slides - interjected by what sounds like static vibrations (quite industrial

sounding), then moves into dance-floor territory again. Soopercharge is a

great track, - builds nicely, evolves into a noisy celebration of joy - very

liberating. Restore My Soul; a mystical sounding track with a phat beat to

boot and I think I can hear crickets chirpin'. Instant ID; rhythmic and

vibrant - a nicely fuelled track. Force Fed; delicate beats are swirled thru

the wash - this one tickles my membrane and then starts to eat it! Scandy

Candy is a consistent funk that grows - this is another one I'll be hearing on

the dance floor. Then there is a hidden track (which these boys seem to be

into) at 8.35m - phat beats, chopped and mixed - sounds a little old-skool;

but then the album cover and packaging is very reminiscent of an old-school

hip hop act. At 14m, there is a dialogue in German (if anyone could translate,

it would be appreciated). Antistat is an industrial-funk-march which evolves

with every subsequent listen. Midi Miliz have created a seminal work; there

aren't many acts in any genre that can blend such brilliant sound scapes

together into one effort.

You want melodies in a MIDI MILIZ album !? hehe if you like melodic trance,

your this shouldn't be your album!!!!

but for me this album is amazing, i don't like the first 3 tracks that much

though... but the rest is very good, pure midi miliz, and in the end there is

something that i wouldn't have expected, an ambient track.. from midi miliz ?

and its actually not bad!

I think this album deserves far more attention than it has gotten to date. How

to describe it? Pulsating, hypnotic bass lines, retro-elecro sounding

overlays, rolled in together with luscious, and totally captivating rhythms.

It is also a very subtle cd and doesn't try assaulting your senses with a

million samples or the latest sound fx. You can tell these guys just love

making music - and even though it is 'tech-trance' with little emphasis on

melody it isn't dark or zombie music either but in a funny way catchy, even

boppy. Antistat may not be as polished as Blast Food, but it is definitely a

psy-trance gem. get it or regret it! 9/10

Notice how theres hardly any minimal-haters pushing their opinion around in

this review list? This album deserves nothing but respect. I recently went to

a d.drum party, and even i (and i love minimal) thought that the music was

rather monotonous after a few hours. But if you hear a Midi Miliz track at the

height of a set after a psychedelic buildup, Id like to see 1 person leave the

dancefloor. Minimal may not be what you listen to in your car or your room,

but when used at the right time it can totally blow the roof off a party. For

all those minimal-haters, please understand theres a time and place for

everything, even texas faggot!

I this alblum is so cool! Maybe not quite as amazing as Blast Food, but still

amazing. I think that referring to music like this as minimal does it a

disservice. There is nothing minimal about the care with which this alblum,

Blast Food and the Midi Miliz track "Flip" were composed. While there may not

be as many crazy layers at once as in some psytrance, they shift and evolve

constantly so that the alblum is by no means boring.

Good Minimal is the psytrance equivilant of Black & White photrography, perhaps

less colorful, but no less interesting or thoughtful.

Do you trip in Black & White or Color?
