Vocoder?

Recommended Posts

The input of a vocoder consists of a so called "carrier" and a "modulator". The modulator usually modulates the carrier input here. For example, a noise waveform could give a voice a whispering, rough character.

There are also many other cool effects you can do on "clean" vocals with a vocoder. If you know Front Line Assembly, they for example used it quite often. Just listen to their tracks "liquid seperation" or "insolence". Some future pop artists do it quite frequently too.

this one describes it quite well:

Something really cool to do with the vocoder, is to put drums through a rough sawtooth wavesound. What the vocoder does, is to take the EQ "signature" of the modulation signal, and map it unto the carrier. If you use complex fast-changing sounds (like drums or voice) as modulation, then you get some cool sounds out of the simplest carrier - for instance a completely unfiltered sawtooth. Play around with pitch on the carrier, and you have instant crazyness.

I'll dig out an example eventually...

yeah vocoders are great on drums, here is a little excerpt of a track i did with a bass player and flute player a couple of yers ago......the vocoder is most present on the snare but its also on the kik, just very low in the mix....

its not psy trance however, but you get the idea..-...
