  1. By quite a big margin, the best internet site that I know is Juno (juno.co.uk).

    Pedro

Yes, that one. Good shop, both downloads and physical format.

For downloads only I would check stuff out on Beatport, they are not the cheapest, but they sure have one hell of a catalog :)

  2. Please don't promote illegal file sharing activities on our forum, thanks.

please just shut your trap. :) I am not suggesting to illegally share anything, I am suggesting to LISTEN to the album before getting it. I downloaded it, listened to it, bought TWO copies. So, get lost kid! :)
  3. +1 for that, Nemo, your arguments are pretty weak for once :P Cd's aint doing much pollution, inside of a jewel case on a shelf somewhere, and it's VERY unusual that a person throw ones cd's out right?

And Psytones, probably because it's the music you pay for, not the cd's :) The price of an empty cd is very low now compared to what it was ten years ago

Jewel cases break and they get replaced. You know how many jewel cases get produced as well as covers for burned cds? And even if you do not throw them away, they still get produced, and a LOT of them get produced every day. More than computers parts, and that I think is a fact :) So the argument is, if you think hard about it, not lame at all. Since we DO have alternatives to PHYSICAL media, and COULD reduce the production of Jewel cases :P

And creating -what looks like almost bigger than a jewel case- case for those sticks is just dump. They should produce a way smaller shell for it at least, if any at all. But as I said before, I do not see the point in these sticks at all, when I can just download wav/mp3 directly from the recordshop.

If labels started to go against their distributions, we could also reduce costs for music. Enough labels within the same genre should get together and start their own webshop, which would need little to no maintenance at all in these days, since a lot of things can be automated. (I am talking about digital media). I am pretty pissed off with the prices of wavs on Beatport for instance, they could be WAY cheaper.

I really like what Basilisk is doing, and I hope more will follow... I know I am.

  4. The pollution part of the discussion I can go deeper in, but I won't, let's write my conclusion in 1 sentence: we all polute anyway, simple as that... All the rest is probably off topic

But then... Woow, I can not believe what you wrote here...:

Let's see, that must be music for a music label

It sells less, I know some of the sales of individual releases ONLY released for download via payment. Lets have an example. Carbon Based Lifeforms single or the E-Mantra one, how many you think were sold?

Those groups have a fan base, but sold 10 times less, or even more, then cd.

First of all: hiring people? With what money? The profit of a label? of course...

Second: many people thought about the collective, but it is harder then you think (what explains why NOBODY did this untill now), why is clear: both financial as on the human side

third: lazy asses? You don't know what you are talking about. We are doing nothing right?

I have NO reason to go 100% digital (see above) and I am very happy with Arabesque, they do their job and they pay. So why chance what is good?

If your sales drop dramatically (1 out of 15? maybe 1 out of 10 cds) artists will earn LESS.

And we have the money to make more records. We just need enough quality music, what takes time.

I wrote a lot, and I love you guys, and I wont continue. The whole music industry is wrong, and you are following the standards of that industry. I wont however try to get further into an argument, cause I will most probably hurt your feelings and be your UN-Friend if I write what I think about the whole thing.

Hope you find another way of thinking when it comes to distributing your music, a way that will gain YOU and your ARTISTS more... And I am not talking about money in particular.

  5. So, you have a car and eat meat etc...? The fact that you live a warm place has nothing to do with the fact that you pollute I think. (as even in Spain you will have to warm you house) And well, everyone in the west is a pollutor, but I do know I pollute much less then the "average" guy, I do all by bike, take the train allways, etc etc, but ok, that's just my choice of living. Some plastic boxes won't make the difference, when the boxes are broken I put them in the plastic recycle bin anyway (and the paper booklet at the paper recycle bin, so not SO much junk is left), just the cd itself.

Well, enlighten me? Both I and Fabien had our moments that we said "now it is really becoming TOO much", we are doing both 2 jobs you know...

And what does THIS have to do with cds? If tomorrow cd stops to exist, I would release as .WAV or whatever, that has nothing to do with running a music label. I will keep running it, even when the cd is gone... if I have the time

on a personal note I LOVE cd, and that's my personal feeling, even if I am the last one on earth i would buy them if possible.

    1. No, I do not have a car, and will never get one. Yes I eat meat, twice a week, from an ecologic farmer... are we going to start talking about soya and shit now, and how much actually that is... WHAT EVER!!! ;) Think about it, and do not try to even start an argument, cause I will destroy you on that argument! :) Has nothing to do with this discussion either, cause we are talking about PHYSICAL MEDIA OF MUSIC, and so far I have not seen any fishdisks.

I bike and take trains and have done for ALL MY LIFE. When going to work, we HAVE TO take a car, cause there is NO OTHER WAY of getting there (There are no bus nor train connections). Most of the days though, I do take the train, and then bike the rest of the 10km, depends on the weather though. I wanna quit working there, cause I think its pathetic that they do not organize something for the people, like buses! Neither does this have to do ANYTHING TO DO with our discussion. Maybe it is my fault to bring things like that up.

    2. I can not enlighten you. You have to enlighten yourself, think about alternatives, think about what is good for the world. People will not buy less of your music if it is good. The fans you have, will be your fans. Marketing, does that ring a bell to you? I am sorry, but why dont you start to think about a distribution COLLECTIVE or something?! A couple of labels working together, hiring some people that will do the job for your lazy asses. A lot better than some asshole distro that abuses you! Or go 100% digital. More money for the artists, more money to make more records! ;)

  6. Selling online is in the making :)

About the use of Distribution... It depends on how much of a life you have next to a label I guess... :D We really can't deal with even more work... The day Suntrip stops is probably because we are too busy to run it , instead of a financial crisis to be honest (in other words, let's hope we don't have children soon)

The argument of "nature" is bull shit imo when it comes to cd... UNLESS you warm your house with wood, you have NO car and you eat only non-manipulared food and no flesh :D

Well, when I moved to Spain, I moved to a FLAT, and we made sure that the house is warmed WITHOUT oil. You can do loads of those things :P And you just have a bad concious, cause you know you are a polluter, AND a record label owner! ;)

The argument that you do not have time is bad as well, and I do not really have to get into details why do I?! :D Your argument is valid only for one thing, and that is that you LOVE cds, and that you wont change standards, cause its comfortable like that! Right?!

  7. well, compared with 10 years ago sales are bad, and when you have an English distribution company who pays you in Pound (which is now worth 30% less then 1 year ago due the economic crisis) many more goa/psy/ambient labels will go bankrupt soon... Watch my words...

Then start selling your stuff online. ;) And come ON, distributor, have you not learned ANYTHING about the music industry?!

Imagine how much plastic and enviromentally damaging compounds a computer concists of.. People, firms ect upgrade and throw away computers all the time. People seem to keep their CD's for much longer then their plastic computer Nemo, shopping cart  you shoppingcart stealer, I bet your backyard is full of old and used shoppingcarts :P

What I Realy can't grasp is why the price of one CD has been the Same since pff yeah the 80's.

Stupid argument, there are not as many computers out there as there are cd's and covers are there?! ;) Lets say that everyone in the world owns 2 computers, and everyone in the world owns 20-30 cds, which is more plastic?! I can understand you want to take the piss, but you failed! ;) Shopping trolly, does that ring a bell to you?! More and more people are using them, and especially in Spain at the moment, cause here the companies starting taking money for plastic bags, cause they do not want that you use them :P

I probably own the most vinyl on this board, and probably own the most music all over on this forum, and I am not proud of how much plastic I have around me, trust me. But its never too late to start re-thinking, right?!

So, Psytones, WHAT ARE YOU doing to keep our planet clean, and what are YOU doing to make the music industry better?! ;) Oh yeah, NOTHING, sorry I knew the answer. Nipwitt! :D

  8. Just a thought.

Are the ppl who bitch about physical formats the ones that they're not willing to pay for their music?

Every friend I have that hate physical formats (and make fun of me for paying to buy cds) are the ones that download illegally without paying a cent.

Maybe...I said maybe this hatred against physical fromats of any kind is because they're simply not free? hm? hmmm?:rolleyes::rolleyes:

In my experience, people that download, are people that would not be able to buy anyways, cause they do not have any money at all to spend on music. And yeah, I understood your question, and I am not going to defend myself, as I do not think that you meant me nor any other digital dj :) I have a LOT of friends that download music pirated, they even collect it, but what they LIKE they buy, and I think that is the fundamental thing here.

I collect mp3s, pirated as bought ones, I am not going to deny that! However, I do not play anything in my mixes that I do not own. Sometimes I buy ONE tune of an EP online, cause I do not like the rest, but I do download the other tracks as well, so I have the complete release (I guess I want things to be complete, even if I do not like what I am listening to?)

It is a balance, as I see it, download whatever you want, but if you USE it to mix, BUY it! :) I do not see anything bad in downloading Previews either, I hate listening to samples, and if there was no pirated mp3s, I would not have bought half of what I did buy ;)

  9. Music Making & DjIng? :) Ill ask what Mars thinks. If not there are really nice forums out there already with almost all the answers covered. I can strongly recommend www.djtechtools.com for the digital dj :) (Check out their forum, its full with cool stuff) :)

  10. the plastic used in CD production is negligible compared to plastic bags used in super markets. why can't hippies see any further than the tip of their noses!?!? it's like not wiping your ass anymore to save the trees!!!!!!!! oh, wait a minutes....!

I am not using plasticbags, we have a shopping cart ;)

and as for Vinyl, I do not buy NEWLY pressed vinyl anymore, stopped that completely, but some rarities I still buy, and I do not feel bad about it, I can not change the past, but I can change the future ;)

Anyways, you all just stick to your precious little stupid cds, and I will be part of the future :)

EDIT: I hope that compact stick will die out faster than the minidisk did :)

  11. Heheh, you're right. But plastic is the name, and consumption's the game. Fun fact - I work in the Rainforest Foundation Norway - so I scream environment loudest!!

People scream environment, and they want people to walk to work rather than driving there. Little did they know that the food production needed to sustain the loss of calories from walking pollutes WAY more than the car pollutes driving the same distance... Think about it!!

I propose - digipaks. Paper - cellulose from sustainable deforestation with government subsidies purchasing co2 quotas in line with the pollution from production. That should only set us back, what, €45 per album?

Or just skip that format and start taking 69cent per track world wide! :D
  12. Yeah, cause memory sticks and hdd's are made of air, huh? :D

The Toxines that are creating when doing a CD is for SURE higher than when creating a HDD, AND a hdd you can fit more music on than on a stinking cd... So, take 1.000 cds, thats around 190 GB (give or take, depending on quality etc etc) of music... what do you think creates more toxic waste? 1000 cds or ONE harddrive?!

(FLAC 500 albums on 250 GB) :) I am sorry, but the CD argument does just not make any sense, actually never has! :) (just as little as Vinyl, but when we had vinyl, there were actually not really a good replacement (Maybe dat?!) :)

And I already said that the stick is a crap solution ;) I mean what the fuck, create this dumb stick and then make a COVER for it as well?! that is DUMP!

  13. Well, I'm sure a collection of key-chain looking memory sticks would look like rubbish - but just because the medium itself has to change doesn't mean they can't place them in jewel-cases just like CD's, see post #1. I wouldnt mind that - if the compact stick really was the future. The estethics are thus preserved. :posford:

Stinking Hippies! Do you not know that PLASTIC is bad for the environment!? I really love how people scream ENVIRONMENT and then they buy cds with Jewel Cases cause they love the format and want a pretty picture. One argument more to skip the whole PHYSICAL media for music! :P:D:lol:
  14. the problem with (legal) digital downloads is that there is no difference between the legal one and the pirated one!

i'm sure CDs would be replaced with something else in future but i don't see the potential in memory sticks. i can imagine how ridiculous a memory stick collection would look!!! looking for a specific album in your pile of memory sticks would be a pain in the ass as well. but all these said, if (and only if) i can buy a USB connector for my amp for cheap i will buy few albums on memory stick :P

If its ripped from CD or from the WEB makes the difference. If from web, there is no difference, if from CD it gets ripped to 192vbr... :D
  15. Thank you, it can go on my psynews wall of "weird quotes"-fame. Id like to collect my prize now!

seriously, you should come and hang around with me for a week, ill show you every weak spot of the CD. ;)

a small example(true story, very annoying): imagine you have to play 20 tracks of around 15 sec in a period of 3 hours. IN this period is a gap of 35 minutes between 2 tracks. Any CD-player has a moment where the pauzed CD goes to sleep modus, this is mostly 10, 20 or 30 minutes. It cant be longer cause, a longer pause than 30 minutes can damage the gear or CD(and im talking about DENON players here), sleep modus cant be switched off. So because the limitations of the technology youll have to remember to open & close the CDplayer in the 35 minute gap, otherwise the CD player will go to sleep modus a few minutes before you have to play the track. And imagine you forget this and play the track while the player is in sleepmodus, it takes about 3 to 5 sec to start up the engine, find the right cluster and play, those are looooong seconds.

sorry, Exit CD, the sooner the better...

From a personal point of view i dont think the CD will vanish soon, its very compatible with alot of other technologies, as long as there will be DVDplayers that are compatible to play and write CDs it will stay on the market. But if you put all the different formats next to each other the only thing i can see in CDs is good marketing. At the moment a cheap selfsustaining marketing cause of the emotional connection alot of people have with it.

I dont think in replacing formats anymore, thats so 80s, i think the hardware will just become multifuntional, how hard is it to transform all pro & DJ gear into something with a USB port. And everybody with a computer can allready play it.

I will buy compactsticks, at least one, pink floyd - dark side of the moon, hehe, i want to check out each format with this music, even if the format is doomed to vanish.

Number 1 Post in this thread! +100!
  16. Well yes that's what I mean. Music is music wherever it comes from, but cds are objects and it's probably my fetish.

    @ Malevolent

Just to make it clear. Every cd I buy I rip it in my PC, cause after all I don't own a hi-fi.

This whole cd fetish that comes from me and other guys is based on two simple things.

First: from a collector point of view there's simply no such thing as digital file collector. Period.

Second: The reason I want to have a cd is to 'feel' that is there. To see it even when my pc is closed.

Yep it's a fetish, I don't disagree about that, but still CD FTW!!! ;):P

No such thing as a digital file collector?! LOL!!!!!! I have a couple of TB that proves you wrong! ;)
  17. STOOOOOOOOOOOOP!!!!!!!

Argh, I just remembered Regis' Necklace Of Bites 2xLP, which is damn monotonous, dry, rotten, repetetive, ugly, disgusting, repugnant, brutally supreme - in brief: best techno release of '08.

Also, Glenn Wilson's track Northern Rise is quite probably my pick for track of the year. It's from '07, but I just recently got around to hearing it. It has those shuffled melody stabs, which are awesome.

I also forgot Oscar Mulero's Take Seven 12", which only gets better as it progressess.

Ill tell Glenn next time I speak to him, I bet he will be happy about that rating :)
  18. Ugly!!!! :P

Both the HD's and the girl!

But they fit more music than you will ever have in your lifetime on cd ;) With a Raid 10 system, you could even assume you will NEVER lose the data either. And if you think that this cute girl is ugly, then I am sorry for you

Honestly, a guy I know lost 3000 vinyls and 5000 cds when his house burned down, however the data on his hdd's could be recovered... good thing he had ripped almost all of his collection the years before ;)
