  1. As with any style of music you can expect 95% to be junk. The best darkpsy is not at all random; take Gappeq, Derango, Psykovsky, CPC, Atriohm, Furious, Ghreg On Earth, etc. Nothing random about these guys, nor will you find any particular emphasis on demons and such. To take one example, Ghreg On Earth has developed an extremely interesting cosmology, a kind of Clive Barkeresque universe of the psychedelic fantastic. His body of work has nothing in common with the stereotypical concept of darkpsy as expressed here, not if you're paying attention anyhow.

When you dip into the remaining 95% you will certainly find music that approximates the stereotype. Some of this can be explained by the unusually participatory culture of darkpsy: many of its most devoted fans also create the music. Remember, it was within darkpsy that a free music movement in psytrance first originated in any serious capacity. So yes, there is a lot of garbage out there with next to zero musical value--but this is not what the style should be judged on.

    +1

  2. So? Why wouldn't you want your own company to make a profit?

    Keeping it underground ?

Making some profit to make ends meet is different than making excess profit due to commercialisation of everything .

  3. They obviously need money if they want to run Twisted Records, I fail to see why this is bad.

Capitalism - all about the profit. It's not just selling something to keep the label alive, it's making TOO much money out of selling masks and stuff aka commercialization

  4. ^ I agree.

To be honest, the reason I opened this poll was because I soo much liked to see Shpongle's and Simon's ass kicked :D . I do enjoy some Hallucinogen tracks, I surely enjoy The Infinity Project tracks, and maybe the first Shpongle album, but that's all. FSOL is a league of their own though ;)

  5. On the recommendation of this forum, or at least the Sphongle vs FSOL thread, I brought myself a copy of

    FSOL Lifeforms.

Haven't heard it yet, but will later when the missus and kid go out and I can get into a groovey headstate. :D

Also make sure to check Dead Cities too ;)

  6. It would be fantastic to have opinions from real DP producers, from both sides (the 5% "horror" D-Dave mentioned and the "comedy horror" someone mentioned).

It is a pity that the likes of Mubali, Psykovsky, Sychotria are not here to say what they have on their minds when they write a track.

Maybe if they hang out in isratrance someone should send this topic ?

By the way Mubali is a member here, had posted some posts in the past, seemed like a cool guy.

  7. It crosses over a lot though. Call it psy-trance with Goa influences, Goa with psy-trance influences, its all the same to me as I am not fussed about subgenre names.

I will just reply to this , for the last part we agree to disagree and it can't change I am afraid.

Well no, Demonoizer doesn't cross over to goa, although some/most of their earliest work does. At least according to my perception. D-Dave can confirm or reject it..

  8. That is not the case.

What I call darkpsy is the stuff that people that are really into darkpsy, hail as the main/best/major music of the genre.

All this stuff is very different to UX, BOTFB, X-Dream...etc who have made tunes that I consider psychedelic and dark, yet I do not call these tunes anything other than psy-trance (goa trance in the case of UX and BOTFB).

For example, the difference between Derango and X-Dream is extremely obvious.

    Peace out.

BOTFB have made enough goa trance(more characteristic example I can think of is the track Mr. Fantastic) or , generally, psy tracks with goa elements with them, but no track is goa trance in Demonoizer album, if you have heard. All of the artists I listed are different from each other, as they have their own characteristic sound.

I agree that the difference between Derango and X-Dream is extremely obvious. But, to add to this:

the difference between BOTFB and X-Dream is extremely obvious.

the difference between BOTFB and Psykovsky is extremely obvious.

the difference between Derango and Psykovsky is extremely obvious.

the difference between Electrypnose and Psykovsky is extremely obvious.

Imo you really can't group psykovsky and BotfB together, you can do that with derango and electrypnose, but BotfB doesn't belong in there. Listen to them again, and then to the likes of psykovsky, totally different...

I think the above replies to you too. I agree they are very different, but both create dark night psytrance music. Psykovsky and Electrypnose sound equally different to me too, as I implied in the examples above.

    ;)

For me all of the above have made dark psychedelic trance.

Also, since many say that 'darkpsy' trance producers have no talent, you should check Electrypnose's downtempo/psychil/IDM album Subliminal Melanchoolies or Psyfactor's Endless Universe. That's how I like to respond to invalid arguments.

  9. It seems to me that the dark psychedelic trance you don't like, you baptize it as "darkpsy" and the rest as dark psychedelic trance, while in fact they belong to the same genre. Mind you I am not a hardcore darkpsy enthusiast,my favourite EMD is goa trance, but I keep my mind open so that I can spot some gems (BotfB,psykovsky, derango, electrypnose) and the rest of the stuff I may not find masterpieces but I could enjoy it on a party for half an hour max.

  10. Yes.

    I just don't like darkpsy.

    Peace.

darkpsy = dark psy-trance = dark psychedelic trance. The above track you posted qualifies as darkpsy aka dark psychedelic trance IMO. Funny thing is when I mentioned above in my list of psychedelic dark albums you implied you don't find any of the above as psychedelic. Anyways ...

  11. Dave, it's just a respectful observation, but you seem conflicted. Your music has some of the phattest, most aggressive kickdrums I've experienced. Where did you get those from? I mean, I really like them, but if the origin of that sort of thing is X-Dream, then you have a dilemma. Take a track like Amor & Psyche. Lovely, by the way. And how about Completely Operational, a fantastic track, which is basically psy techno?

I don't agree that competely operational is psy techno, however I do agree with your point. For example Demonoizer album has some pretty stomping kicks and basslines.
