  1. You should definitely check out:

    Breaks:

Front Line Assembly - Backlash (industrial with a frenzy of breaks) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMTaXVAe0Do

Front Line Assembly - Buried Alive (hard and fast DnB/Industrial) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzR53DbL2rs

Noise Unit - Liberation (nice drums on this track, unfortunately not on YT)

Noise Unit - The Drain (not on YT, but one of the tracks that got me into the genre)

Moby - James Bond Theme (a bit smoother but nevertheless very energetic) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P79cVnDmzB0

Expansion Union - Playing with Lightning (one of the best heavy breaks tracks ever!!!)

Prodigy - Firestarter (for obvious reasons) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28ow4TLMTqM

    DnB:

Current Value - Dark Rain (this is pure DnB, but what a great dark anthem, and how sick drumsounds!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uiTazePDkqk

Unknown Error - Exit (so much detail in this track!)

Noisia - Block Control (one of the tracks that got me into DnB, if youre looking for high energy, look no further)

Black Sun Empire - Arrakis (has been mentioned already, but this is THE alltime classic) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUuvIi3UFK4

and to conclude this, a track by me... a mix of metal, industrial and DnB at extreme speed: "Human Error"

  2. I wrote this tutorial a while ago, maybe this is not exactly the sound you are looking for, but close enough... the links dont work anymore I think but I am sure you will get the idea...

    Hey,

I thought I'd share some information.

Some people asked me how to do that dark FM saw synth that you can hear in a lot of Psytrance tracks.

The synth will sound like this:

    ----> http://www.speedyshare.com/314471479.html

    Ok,

to follow this tutorial, you will most likely need z3ta. Open a new patch, and try to follow the instructions.

If you want to have this sound ready for use, you can download the z3ta patch here:

    ----> http://www.speedyshare.com/301841895.html

so I start with a very simple melodic pattern, nothing special here.

    Posted Image

In the end our z3ta that outputs a beautiful sound will look like this:

    Posted Image

    - In z3ta, I will use 2 Oscillators. Oscillator 1 is the modulator, Oscillator 2 is the carrier. Its pretty easy to do this in z3ta.

    - first, set the polyphony to 1.

    - set Osc1 Wave to "Triangle". Low Triangle waves are awesome modulators for this kind of sound.

    - set Osc2 Wave to "Vintage Saw 1". This is our carrier, you can also choose other waveforms, but in my opinion saw waves are the best.

    - set Osc1 Group to "FM". This means our waveform is now a frequency modulator.

    - set Osc1 Octave to -3 and Osc2 Octave to -1. You can choose other octaves of course, but the modulator should always be 2 octaves lower than the carrier for best results.

    - filter 1 should be set to a 12 db bandpass filter with 2/3 resonance.

    - filter 2 is a 12 db lowpass filter with resonance and cutoff set at around 1/2.

    - next, increase the "Bus" of oscillator 2. This means, more of its signal will go through filter 1 (since filters are cool we want to do this)

    - play around with the level of oscillator 1. The higher you take it, the "noisier" our sound will be, so if you dont want to end up with noise, dont set it too high.

    - set the "render quality", if you havent done this already, to draft. This will result in a much rawer output. We want a raw, dirty sound, so this would probably be useful.

    - next we go to the effects page in z3ta and add a slight bit of delay, and distortion set to maximum amount, type smart shaper, destination filters 1-2.

-also do some EQ to cut a bit of the nasty mids.

here is what the fx page looks like:

    Posted Image

-now back to the front page.

    - we change the envelope to minimum attack, maximum sustain, maximum decay, no release.

    - we add an LFO with destination "filter 1 cutoff", then we add some sick modulation to our filter. Yay. Z3ta has some nice step envelopes that can do some cool LFO things.

    These are my LFO settings:

    Posted Image

    - now play around with speed and range of the LFO modulation until you got something that sounds nice.

    - if you wan, you can add some extra tweaking of filter 1 cutoff, and add it as automation envelope.

Well, I almost think thats all of it.

Remember that the modulation amount, that is the level of oscillator 1, is the most important tool to shape the sound the way you like it, either "bassy" or ..well.. "nasty saw like"

I also added some CamelPhat distortion to it, a bit of overdrive really works on this kind of sound.

If you want to go even more crazy and create some rythmic patterns out of it, try CamelSpace.

Here is what I did to our first sound with crazy panned gating:

    Thats it for today :)

  4. Hey,

I continued to work on my DnB skills a bit

After "Antares" this is my second spaced out, trippy yet driving DnB track called "Corona". This track needs probably some work on the details here and there but I'm too lazy for that right now. Overall I feel very content with the overall sound, I think I've made an improvement since Antares.

Anyway, here is the track. If youre in the mood for a trip to distant universes, check it out .. feedback as always appreciated!

    new, improved version up!

  5. Hey Felix,

as always you are very modest about your work. Theres no need to, you could aswell say "here is one of the best kickass darkpsy albums 2008" instead :D

Seriously, awesome work, I know most of the tracks already, but its always nice to bang your head to songs like Amanojak. And nice to see you included our collab track too!

Bye friend, hope we meet again soon :drama: :)

  6. Hey,

this track feels a little chaotic. Doesnt mean its bad, but I am missing some kind of direction. Also you should watch your overall levels, dont let it go above the 0 dB mark, else you will get these clipping sounds. Well, you got some good ideas, but the track sounds unfinished. Keep working on it :)

  7. Hi everyone, I am glad to say I am back on this forum.. didnt have so much time for music and forums in the past.

But now, I got productive again. Started working on my DnB production skillz, since DnB is a new love I discovered... And FINALLY my tunes do not sound like shit anymore. Here is something I feel extremely content with. Except that its overcompressed, but bleh.

Antares is a dark, spaced out DnB tune with trippy pads, robotic synths and a hard banging percussion, kinda like Cybernetika goes DnB. Even though this is a Psy forum I am sure some of you will like it. ;)

    Enjoy!

  8. Hey Tom,

    listening..

interesting groove. The rythmic patterns are kind of complex - also the kick rythm gets very - so I guess this would be not that well suited for a dancefloor, rather for home listening. I think the percussion is kind of clicky and noisy, I think this is sometimes distracting.

That thin gated fm riff is even a little too thin for my taste.

The bass could get a little more upfront as said.

You made a nice use of the samples, they could be pushed a little more into the foreground of the mix, they are rather silent right now, just a little bit of compression should help.

The melody towards the end is nice, although again a little thin I think.

You were right, this is a very twisted track and I admit that I am not really in the mood for it right now. Though I have to say you managed to create some interesting rythms here. Some stuff is getting too much to the limit mix-wise. I suggest you turn down some of the levels. But overall a very unique track,k-ban was right, for true psychos :)

  9. Hey, nice work!

I tried it and got to say it is really not bad :)

However turning some of the controllers with the mouse has a little strange behavior like it follows the direction of the mouse relative to the controller, maybe you can look at other synths and you see what I mean. But I try to use my midi controller as much as possible anyway ;)

Oh, and a warning to all: DONT turn the resonance all the way up, its getting a really really heavy feedback.

    Anyway, thanks for sharing :)
