    Audio DVDs

here's an extract about this if you're a techy .... (http://www.meridian.co.uk/p_mlp.htm) The basis for WG4's work has been a set of requirements set forth by the International Steering Committee (ISC), representing the interests of the world's major record label trade associations (the RIAA, IFPI and JRIA). Most of the 15 requirements - things like support for high-resolution audio, multichannel (surround) playback and CD compatibility - have long been part of WG4's brief. But this summer the ISC recognized that even DVD is limited in terms of both bandwidth (the playback data rate) and total storage capacity, and added to its list the requirement that playing times, even for high-resolution multichannel sound, approach those of the 74-minute CD benchmark. To meet this requirement, WG4 mandated that all DVD-A players support a lossless data compression scheme championed by Meridian Audio of Cambridge, England, a 21-year-old hi-fi manufacturer best known for its audiophile CD players, receivers and other home stereo gear. Unlike "perceptual coding" schemes that reduce data rates by discarding "unneeded" audio data, Meridian Lossless Packing is more analogous to Stuffit and other software utilities that reduce the size of computer files without altering the information. According to Meridian and WG4, MLP yields a decoded output that is bit-for-bit identical with the original signal. The actual degree of compression achieved by MLP depends on the program material itself, but the claimed reduction in bandwidth and storage requirements is significant (see Fig. 1). Without compression, for instance, 96kHz/24-bit audio requires 2.3 megabits per second per channel. That works out to 13.8 Mbps for 6-channel sound - which exceeds DVD-A's 9.6 Mbps bandwidth - and a total required capacity of 7.7 gigabytes, which exceeds the 4.7 GB capacity of DVD-5, the least expensive DVD to replicate (and thus most attractive to labels). Used on typical program material at that resolution and channel configuration, MLP is expected to reduce bandwidth by 38 to 52% (to 6.6-8.6 Mbps), allowing anywhere from 73 to 89 minutes on a DVD-5. That capacity might fall as low as 54 minutes if a separate MLP-encoded 96/24 stereo mix is also provided on the same disc, in which case DVD-A's ability to deliver some channels of a multichannel mix at lower resolution than others could be used to reduce data requirements and thus lengthen duration.

    Audio DVDs

My uncle is one of the founders of the hi-end audio company Meridian, and they have been working on an audio format for DVD at 96khz I think (called Meridian Lossless Packing) which they hope to be able to use for the next generation of recordings. I think you would need a seriously good system to hear the difference between a 44.1kHz sampled track and anything above that - but if you're in the business to make the best equipment, then I suppose you're in the business to show off what it can do !! http://www.meridian.co.uk/ bomble

    Mexico

make sure that if you're in the Yucatan (which is where Playa is located) you take time inbetween beach sessions to see some of the amazing sacred sites (Chichen Itza, Tulum etc.) because they are mindblowing. Particularly if you have any interest in astronomy etc. - the Mayan's sure were a knowledgeable race. bomble
  7. damn right their unknown - to me atleast ! What styles are the above ? bomble
  8. Tongues of Fungus sample in Sunkings' soul searching album is just so nuts ! As is the Henry of Rawlinson sample on Kumba Mela experiment album. The samples on Klunk are from the Wacky races I think (Mutley not scooby ??) Also there was an old tune with a sample that went something like 'I've pissed in my pants and nobody can do anything about it!' I like samples that catch you by surprise, even when you know the track well ! bomble
  9. The only track I can think of by Kox Box that has the tribal vocal feel of song for ancestors is 'Go fly a kite' on the Great unknown cd (as well as listed as by Saikopod on Infinite Excursions 3)

Icydeus - stocking up on some classics I see. I think I may be getting Floatation (Interchill comp) or maybe Nuclear Ramjet's music for spaceports - anyway, something from Canada from my bro-in-law. bomble
  11. I think it's really sad that our music should be tainted with such petty back stabbing and squabbling. If you make music ... it is for one of two audiences - yourself or everyone. If you want to make money out of it then don't give it away - if you want people to hear it then do. Simple. my rule - if someone who made a track gives it to me ... it goes no further. That way I make no enemies. bomble

  14. mE - glad you let us know that they did arrive - I think it's only fair to present them in an honest light. I agree that they shouldn't have all abandoned ship over the Christmas season ... that's pretty dumb and irresponsible. The cd's people order around this time are very often for gifts - and it's pretty crap if they didn't get that sorted. Once again Chaosunlimited impressed me by sending out a 'last order date' list for different destinations to get their stuff out by Christmas... bomble
  15. I have no experience with Dolphin discs, but I know that Changing World can be slow. I helped do the ordering from them for a local record shop once - and it took ages for any of the stuff we put through to come. Plus it's Christmas time = more demand coinciding with people doing less work = delays. I have to say that Chaosunlimited have impressed me enough to keep me regular - they are friendly on the phone, I trust their judgement when they tell me something is good, and their bargain cd selection can turn up some hidden gems. They are also less expensive than they were two months ago, with is a rare treat - prices don't often go down ! bomble
  16. If you book them they will come ... I don't know how it is where you are, but in the UK if you can secure a good location for an outdoor party in the summer, then just about everything else can be done for free because producers, decor artists, djs and everyone else just loves the outdoor party feeling. I help the Breathing Space lads put on parties sometimes, and literally all they had to pay for was the generator and fuel. We got several live acts, lots of djs, a 20K rig (mostly bits from Blue Room) lighting & decor all free - and the food was done by a friend of mine who has a mobile cafe - he shared his profits with the party organisers, and they ended up making a small turnover for the event. Try to get yourself friendly with the right people - it's not what you know but who you know. All this needs is some friendly phonecalls, gradually working your way along the 'friend of a friend of a friend' chain until you get a bunch of keen people ... and then it can all be yours !! bomble

  19. Yeah - just got hugely junkmailed and Hotmail have locked me out of my account !! (500+ mail arrived since yesterday) ... I can't get to my address book on hotmail until this is sorted out, but I will get back to you once I am through to it. I'm curious ... do you want her to play for you ? bomble
  20. Send Ed an email and tell him ... I'm sure they'll get on the case ... Ed@dolphindiscs.com (I think that email is right) bomble
  21. I have her email address... email me and I'll forward it next time I log into hotmail
  22. I am not too sure exactly how many of my discs would be classed as trance, but approximately 200 trance, 60 chillout & 50 other electronica or world music. Of that lot, about 70 are not originals and are on cd-r (whenever I couldn't get hold of them or they were deleted). I don't really have any mp3 though I sometimes download them to get a feel for a new artist. I buy between 3 and 10 cds per month and have been collecting trance since 1993 and specifically psy since 1996 when I first heard it. bomble
  23. A quick plug for Eat Static - their website (www.eatstatic.co.uk) has been nominated for an award at next years music industry event "Midem". They are up against Kylie Minogue and The Rolling Stones, so it would be great if Eat Static won this award. You can vote for them on the news page of either the Eat Static or Ozric websites so please go there and submit your vote - thanks!! bomble
