    GOOD POP MUSIC

I think pop is a very broad and interesting genre, there is so much good stuff that I'm not even sure where to begin. For me pop is what I listen to daily, my background music so to say. Psy/Goa is just for some specific moments, for example when I'm drawing or something, perhaps while doing something in photoshop and sometimes for forest walks. Currently I'm really enjoying the urban elements in todays pop, the emphasis on TR-808 type beats and so on. And also the weird and experimental vocal processing often employed nowadays, and the great use of synthesizers/plugins. And if we break down pop into decades, well yeah it's an amazing amount of great music.
  2. Well for example, the first Israel's Psychedelic Trance compilation, I think everyone will agree that it's what we now call Old School/Classic Goa Trance. So it was just how it was marketed. I would love to see how for example the Hallucinogen Twisted album was marketed? Anyone has any album promo material? The terms at some points in time were used interchangeably. Which only adds to the confusion. And yes this is defintitely a case for the discogs detectives.
  3. I think it would be fair to say that in the beginning the confusion regarding genre terminology stems from how labels chose to market the music on offer. When the Goa term became outdated and fell out of fashion, Psytrance became a more popular term. However as time passed on the music of course branched of more, and developed distinct distinguishing features. Another way to approach it would be that in the beginnings the compilations bundled together various styles under one umbrella term (Goa). But the music was perhaps different enough to separate stylistically. Something which speaks in favour of this view, is that there was often Acid Trance tracks featured on Goa Trance compilations. Of course there's probably several contributing factors and ways to see it. The issue however persists today, with modern labels naming compilations "Goa" and so on despite beeing full-on compilations etc. So basically my impression is that it's diffuse marketing procedures which is the main culprit.
  4. Sounds like an interesting solution, which I guess would work well with external analog synthesizers which lack a phase align option. What are the benefits of using this approach compared to just relying on the option in the synthesizer plugin one might use for bass? Is it a more precise/accurate way, or more flexible? If I have understood it correctly, it fixes not only the bass phase, but the kick as well at the same time? I need to test it out later
  5. Cool thanks will check it out I only found the osc reset, which obviously didn't do the trick by itself. Weird that they haven't provided a dedicated parameter/value dial for it in the osc section. Do you know what value will correspond to a value of 32 I think it was in Sylenth1? It was a different value as well in the Virus.

  8. A little late to the party I started watching Black Mirror. For this one I will say the hype is deserved, what a well made and unique anthology series. Really dark, satirical and perfectly executed. The episode Metalhead alone was worth it, that's the best Terminator movie never made. Fantastic envisioning of the possible dark paths the AI-technology/robotics developed by companies such as Boston Dynamics, could take in the future. The episode really manages to capture the sensation of fear that an almost unstopple foe did in Terminator 1 and 2. Something which sadly the latest entries in the Terminator franchise didn't do well at all.
  9. I agree, this track and the remix always felt so different from the other tracks released around the same time. And still to this day feels very unique, and unrivaled in terms of its emotional qualities and expression. It is very unorthodox for a goa trance track, as it doesn't really stick to any typical elements common at the time. It's not oriental for example, and doesn't have any 303 sounds or psychedelic background noises/sounds either. I will check out Enchanted Forest, thanks
  10. Interesting anecdotes and the info regarding beatport as well. isn't it kinda amusing how much overlap there seems to be between metal and goa/psy naming of projects for some funny reason? Certainly for the more darker "evil sounding" goa/psy projects. The word Basilisk always reminds me of one of the Harry Potter movies. Should be more easy to battle the german dude than a friggin dragon tho
  11. It was no critique of the videos you linked perhaps I came across as sounding more negative than I was. In the end I think all the things one can learn from are good, then one can cherry pick the different things that might fit ones personal style and mixing/production level. And yes good example, that sometimes people by ear gets things right. That should be the rule of thumb, does it sound good? That's defintely a good start then hopefully atleast someone else will agree as well, then it's worth it. Btw @Prophecy99 I checked after this thread and atleast from what I can see so far (I could be wrong) but Dune 3 doesn't seem to feature the phase align setting as Sylenth1, Spire and others do. Could be a dealbreaker for some if that's the case.
  12. Indeed and some rules change like generations. So sometimes rules can be seen as trends as well. What didn't work today, might be a trend in the future. Without some rulebreakers, we would be stuck playing classical music, and electronic music wouldn't even be a thing. I sometimes like to compare electronic music to physics, where for example there were established physical laws which everybody held true. Then came others with new ideas and theories, which led to much of the old ideas becoming largely obsolete.(Not entirely) And so the cycle continues, knowledge is expanded upon, new theories arise, every new theory might open several new doors for others to discover.
  13. Watching the Roanoke season of American Horror Story. Some funny shit so far. I like the style of it, very cool format and presentation so far. There is a wittiness to it which I find really amusing.
  14. Yes indeed, but not everyone make full-on/prog/dark psy. There is a market for retro gear after all, and for good reason. Not everything need to abide strictly to the rules set up within parts of the psy scene. I'm sure there are plenty of artists/tracks which are great and new which don't utilize this. For most I think this is like psytrance bass OCD, since it will "not sound good" without this trick on a sound system at a party, which I don't buy. It becomes a brain ghost, where you will think the track will suck without it. Rules are boring, and tend to limit. It's not the phase of the bass that will make or break a track. At least not for the listener. This is strictly stuff only producers notice/care about. And quite frankly I don't even think I would notice if I listen at home or attend a party. And in the end the tracks are hopefully made for the listener out there? Think about it, who attends these parties? Often teens with no knowledge whatsoever about production/phase aligned basses. Another good example is this, have you ever read a review here on psynews or elsewhere, where the reviewer complains that a track didn't have a phase aligned bass? I sure haven't. And for goa trance I can assure you that this phase aligned basses is certainly not an issue Bunch of old analog synths out of tune, out of sync and phase misaligned. Heck I'll even say it's part of the goa sound lol. But yeah since this is a thread about psytrance bass, let's all just get phase aligned and agree.
  15. @recursion loop Regarding the phase align of the bass, that is only really a thing with modern plugins and some VA synthesizers like the Virus TI for example. It doesn't reallly apply with most old analog options. Unless you're gonna sample the analog synth and phase align the sample, but then I don't really see the point in using analog synthesizers in the first place. Might as well get analog bass sample libraries then. Sylenth1 was actually one of the first plugins I remember which gave the user so precise control over the phase. Prior to that it was mostly either osc sync/drift on or off. The Virus has the same degree of control over the phase aspect as well, so Sylenth1 probably took the idea from the Virus.
  16. I would add Dune 3 to that list as well. It's particularly good at Juno-106 type sub basses. I do like Spire a lot, but I've noticed it needs more layering of osc to get the bass equally fat compared to Dune 3. So I'm often returning to Dune when I feel the bass turns out unsatisfactory on Spire sometimes. Depends of course on the style/era you're aiming for. Spire for sure has a more modern Virus like edge. I'm sure though any of those on your list will do the job, as long as you invest the needed time into learning it inside-out. And focus on it fully, instead of jumping around too much between different synths. Another factor to consider is which of these plugins you like the soundsets for? Some undoubtedly has a more popular following and thus a greater selection of soundsets available, if you're feeling that you need some inspiration/starting points.
  17. Just to be able to follow a bit, Psytones I suppose you are the thread starter as well behind the label account KER? It gets a bit confusing as it is already And I agree with RTP, the only one who can really answer this is the involved artist. As pointed out by RTP it is/was atleast a member around here, which you of course know. To me personally I think the issue seems a bit weird, surely there must be some other artist alias out there waiting to be discovered/created? I would have more understanding if the issue was that your labels artist had his alias hijacked after making releases under said alias. And btw sorry if I might've missunderstood some details with regards to the dates/releases. The thread start was quite long and difficult to follow, since it concerned two separate issues. And I'm writing this on my phone. Regarding the mexican artist I can't really comment as I know nothing about that artist/country/market/scene. In general I don't see any problems with an artist creating as many projects as they want during a lifetime. Some as we've noticed might of course create a staggering amount of aliases in a shorter time frame than others, but everything always has a logical explanation I think. Even if it doesn't make sense to me/you/whomever. And there are no unwritten or written rules that limits this. And I think any artist either indie or with world wide distribution rights, should be able to create as many aliases/projects as they like IMO. As long as it's legal within the jurisdiction of the involved parts. And of course as long as the alias is unique and not claimed before. It's of course complicated with different laws in different countries. I am by no means a lawyer or legal expert or otherwise involved in these type of matters, these are merely my reflections. If one really needs/wants to use an existing word/concept/idea as an artist name, for example things with a historical or religious connotation. Then there will undoubtedly be others who might've contemplated the very same alias. This goes for all the indian/egyptian/mayan gods etc. I don't know the specifics about the alias in question here. But can't the artist for example just use the same alias, but add another word in front of it to distinguish it a bit? Since both are in the same scene, it has the potential to create more confusion in the future, should the other artist chose to make more releases under that alias.
  18. Interesting blend, I'm a bit curious about the "melodic forest" compilation, does that mean as in scandinavian forest music? Or is it something else? I assume it's on the darker side of the spectrum? The compilation with the old school goa veterans seems intriguing as well, MFG and Astral Projection in particular. I wonder which of their older albums they migh've targeted/looked at for inspiration for the retro-style, if they did. A dream would be a new Astral Projection album in the Another World style. And an MFG album inspired by Project Genesis. A new collaboration between MFG and Astral Projection would be something as well. Like they did on The Sleeper Must Awake. The Khetzal album already seems promising of course from the small teaser on fb.
  19. Okey Marianne had some really good moments, it lost it's pace and excitement somewhat around episode 5. Which was too bad because it was really perfect until then. What I think happened is that they revealed the the complete plot a bit too early, so after that there wasn't anything left to really be invested in. Still I'll warmly recommend it, as it gave me the chills plenty of times, less so after episode 5. I would have loved to see what they could've made in a second season, unfortunatley it seems it got canceled. Now I think I will watch American Horrory Story, sadly there are only three seasons on Netflix.

  22. I have a general question regarding the section previously known as "other art" which was merged with the offtopic section. Within those subforums there is none from what I can see where one can post art? Or have I missed something? My eyesight might be to blame as well. But yeah if there is a subforum or thread where one can post random digital art/visual arts, photography/street art and stuff like that. Or perhaps that goes into the main offtopic section? I'm not so used to that section as I never frequented it before in its prime
