... well , i've been thinking ... the full-on vs. progressive 'war' has been going on for ages .... now what bothers me is that some people still say the so called minimal sound is crap and hasn't got the spirit . It's leading to mainstream and it is to commercial , bla bla bla ....

for example this ...

Author: lifeform (---.ipt.aol.com)

Date: 02-08-02 17:59

well if you ask me... The recent popularity of psy ... bringing "ravers" into the psy world... Brought Minimal with them.

"ravers" = minimal

Full on psychedelic!! = goa heads.

...

now , i think i found an explanation but i'm not sure ... i need YOUR help too . it's all about background music evolution you've been going through . I'll start with mine ... I like full-on AND progressive trance , although i prefer progressive because the sound and groove you get is much better for dancing into the trance state of the mind . my background is ... Big Beat ( Crystal Method , Chemical Bros. , Prodigy ... etc. ) afterwards into Drum'n'Bass , followed by 'Warp-Records' (with freaky structure music like Autechre , Aphex Twin , Plaid) , Cylob ... and then Psytrance .

... so tell me progressive haters and lovers, what's your background ?

well i think i prefer full on, the really crazy stuff, but i like some good progressive as well every once in a while, to build up a party or for those endless morning ;) what i can't stand is the really boring ploddy stuff, especially not when played at at a time that is supposed to be the peak of the night ...

i started listening to stuff like the shamen and the klf at the age of 6, but after that spent most of my time listening to rock/punk/metal stuff ... at the age of 10 i started making music in fasttracker and gradually got more and more into electronic stuff, first discovering stuff like underworld, then i really got into drum 'n bass, and after that i discovered goa/psy stuff ... but it didn't end there, even after i discovered psytrance i had a period when i was really into minimal techno, and more abstract warp style stuff like autechre ... i don't listen to that kind of stuff much anymore these days though ...

i listen only to full on / melodic psytrance and really can't get into minimal/progressiv. I listened and still listen nearly to all music styles like hip-hop, commercial trance, charts stuff, r'n'b, rock, alternative, heavy metal, punk, dance, house, 2 step, progressiv house, a small amount of classical stuff and hardcore... the only music besides minimal and prog i really can't stand is detroit techno, but normal techno is good. i started to listen to electronic music with the shamen, westbam, marusha, u96, utah saints and that stuff and then slowly discovered the other genres. i listen to psy for about 2 years but i started really to care about that music and buying psy cds for about a year.

Old skewler/ Psyambient nutta:

Musical background:

Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Faith No More, The Orb, Queens of the Stone Age, Mr.Bungle, Slayer...So loatsa psychedelic stuff and some metal/rock...

Always kinda hated conventional techno/trance due to a lack of musicality and soul, really tried loatsa electronic stuff from 1987 till 1995 (acid was nice though) and then one day I spinned Hallucinogen's Twisted and while listening I knew that this was what I've been looking for in electronic music all the time...Salvation...Never looked back...Just when I was about to become a little disappointed with psy somewhere in 1998, Shpongle came along...

Now in Goa/Psy more and more dirty old tricks (hypnotic power of repetitive patterns) from 1988's Detroit and Chicago Techno are used (some call it progression) I feel my interest is fading although strangely enough I found Cosma-Simplicity and The Delta's Send In, Send Back among some ambient stuff the best albums of 2001.

Still I think that the GOA/PSy heritage is in safer hands with Juno Reactor, Youth & friends and Shpongle than the techno recyclers...After all, many people (a lot of old goaheads come from the metal/psychedelic rock/alternative/hippie scene) stepped in because it was totally unlike Techno and Trance...So whats the point in losing these unique characteristics and become 1 with the general techno scene?

I used to (and still) listen to detroit techno,

but the psy-techno sound isn't for me. The

kick is too pronounced, too dominating -- in

techno the kick drum shares space with

everything else and sort of "meshes" with

the rhythm of the toms, snares... you know

what I mean? Psy-tech is just about getting

the hardest kick possible, & chucking some

noises over the top... like slow gabba...

I love melodic/full on/ambient but just cannot REALLY get into progressive and minimal sounds, 'cept ticon and mos.

I started out with bob Marley, then Mettalica, then Blur/Oasis?beatles, then Prodigy.Enya/Enigma, then Acid Tekno and then Goa. BUT...I still love all that music as much as i did 'cept for metallica (way to depressing) tho i still have my cds of metal. I also now love drumnbass, junglke, breakbeat, deep house and commercial house, pop, rnb, rap, reggae, club trance and most of anything else also classical and jazz. "but goa is definitely no.1 for me tho it is really getting quiet crappy, we seem to be in a bad rut, not seeing a way out excepot a few of the old skool who are still around (Avi Algranati, Joti Sidhu, Simon Posford and the likes). The minimal acts need to experiment a bit more I think, and add just a tiny bit more twistedness into their music, I am not saying it is bad music, I do like some of the real full on minimal, it is just I would not go to a party with only minimal acts, it would drive me mad after 1-2 hours :-)

... well , Miles ... you got some good points but let me explain a bit further why i like this progressive sound...

For me , it also took a while until i got addicted to the minimal psychedelic sound ... the difference is that the minimal sound isn't 'in your face' .... there are lot's of melodies which create the emotional feelings ... progressive is much deeper . when you hear the kick and the bass , those two element form a certain groove , then you get the hihats and snares for more Tribal feeling ... it's the repetitiveness which is the trance provider ( and that's obvious ) ... now , we've got the tribal structures but that's not it ... you've got to follow the rhythm , yeah ... that's it , follow it (by dancing) and it's like the groove is going through an electronic jungle full of freaky animals making strange noises ... you hear the 'blips' and 'blops' and all the crazy futuristic filters on it .... this is what this style is so interesting to me ... you've got to search for the creations , the psychedelic tribal structures...

As I said Setsuko, I don't hate minimal, I juts don't like it anywhere near as much as full on. I will tell you one compilation tho that I do like, 9 Pills. This I fins is great nighttime music tho it can encourage a headache. I find that all music influences and therefore I thik that when I finally get my studio going, I will have some nice ideas to play with, as I have done on gutiatr and soft synths already. All music is amazing, except britney spears and the likes, and all music will influence me inm m,aking music :-) Enjoy but don't close ya mind :-)

What?! Why am i there?! It's basically true though... Ya gotta admit... Minimal is club music and Goa can be club music but it's mostly just tripping music.

Ok Setsuko... what music do you consider

"techno"? For me it's Carl Craig, Dave Angel,

Ken Ishii, Kenny Larkin, Underworld, Conemelt,

Planet Rhythm & the likes... hardly "in your

face"...

i really like setsuko's description of minimal/progressive as grooves going through an electronic jungle full of freaky animals making strange noises, this is also kinda the way i perceive a good minimal set on the dancefloor ;) i disagree that it would be club music, or that it isn't psychedelic .. you just need to tune into the right vibe, which isn't always easy, but once you do you'll notice that it can be extremely hypnotic ... btw, i prefer any kind of music outdoors, it's not like outdoor parties are only for full on stuff and club parties only for minimal, imo that would be a rather ridiculous concept ..

Let's see... my background is pretty ecletic... When I was really young, like 5-8 y/o, I started listening to my parent's New Age CDs while in my room I listened to all kinds of rock and pop music. Then I started listening to harder rock bands, following my brother's taste... Iron Maiden was THE thing for me a long time. When I was about 12 I started listening to Dance music and GOOD rock, like Pink Floyd and The Doors, but more dance music than rock.

In 1997 I started listening to The Prodigy and Chemical Brothers, but I felt like there should be something CLEANER, with richer melodies... then I found Club Trance and Progressive House. After a while I started listening to Hallucinogen and Astral Projection... became addicted to that stuff... :)

Now I listen to Psy / Full On, Melodic Trance, Morning Trance & Club Trance...

Favorites right now are Skazi, GMS, Infected Mushroom and X-Dream. :)

Take care,

Bruno

Well i've always loved the adrenaline packed stuff = heavy alternative (offspring, etc) to hardcore rap/hip hop (wu tang, onyx, NTM, etc) to metallica's old speed/thrash metal stuff along with outfits like slipknot and other headbanging stuff..thats why my love for fast paced, action-filled, adrenaline-packed music transferred to full on, and in particular full on melodic!

really into the RA: To sirius album now..its great..every track is a hit

Interesting post Setsuko!

I am currently enjoying artists such as; Yumade, Charasmatix, Son Kite, Spirallianz/Midimiliz, XV Kilist, Paste, Shiva Chandra, Bitmonx - so i guess those are termed "progressive" or "minimal".

Whatever the case - i do not enjoy going to clubs to hear this music, I'd rather be in the bush - so I dont think it's quite club music. As far as psychedelic goes - no-one can convince some1 whether a style of music is psychedelic - it's very subjective. I find this music to be highly psychedelic, so do many others.

The only "pop" music I enjoy lately has been; Radiohead (who are incredibly refreshing), and Bjork...cant think of anyone else.

Also I currently listen to the Boredoms, Iancu Dumitrescu, Fanfare Ciocarlia and a lot of jazz; Coleman, Monk, Mingus, Ayler, Brotzmann, Tchichai, (John & also Alice) Coltrane, ....

B4 listening to this kind of music (94-98), I was listening to; Hallucinogen, Infected M, Xerox & Freeman, California Sunshine, GMS, Sid Shanti...all the melodic toons. I guess it just became a bit too much for me. Even now that kind of music makes me switch off.

And b4 listening to that (88-94), I was listening to; Sonic Youth, The Pixies, Mike Patton projects, Primus, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Captain Beefheart, Nirvana, Pavement, Ministry, John Zorn...

Also a lot of rap at the time: Ultra-Magnetic MCs, Eric B & Rakim, NWA, BDP, Run DMC, Wu-Tang, Beastie Boys...

(75-88), I was listening to; Bob Dylan, The Ramones, Brian Eno, Boney M, Kraftwerk, Pink Floyd

My tastes are eclectic and I still enjoy all these styles from time to time - to tell u the truth the melodic stuff is the only style that is just a bit too messy for me.

The beauty of music is the diversity and depth that is always present - u just need to search.

This has been a good therapy session for me, thanks Setsuko.

I grew up with Pink Floyd, the Police, Clash, Velvet Underground, Black Sabbath, Beatles, the Doors and other psychadelic rock groups, all thanks to my older brother.

Then in my teens I started listening to punkrock groups like Dead Kennedies, Crass, Sonic Youth, Bad Religion, Mano Negra, Naked Agression, Propagandhi, Chumbawamba, Rage against the Machine, swedish punkrock and some more the Clash, Velvet Underground and Doors.

After my first psytrance party I fell in love with fullon, melodic trance. Hallucinogen, Cosmosis, Doof, Kox Box...And I've also started to listen a lot of psychadelic music from the sixties and seventees again. I still love full on goa. There are some minimal things that I like a lot too, but i'm not as crazy about it. I think it has to do with the fact that I find some of it a bit hard to dance to.

Oh and between these stages of my life I've also listened to some reggae, dub and hip hop too. I think basically that there's good music in many different music genres.

"we go with Maia" - do u know that one??? it's Porno For Pyros.

Perry Farrell with Janes Addiction & Porno For Pyros were also great.

So too was Velvet Underground, the Police, Clash, Black Sabbath and as u say Maia, there is so much good music in many genres...it keeps us forever entertained.

my story would be more like Avneesh's.

used to like fast heavy stuff like sepultura, fear factory, pantera.. but also gabber like buzz fuzz, omar santana, dj promo..

and now i like the more full on styles of psytrance.

so obviously ive just always enjoyed very energetic music.

but i also love hypnotic tribal stuff. but with minimal there is only a certain type that i like... i think they all try and be hypnotic but only some of them succeed.

so its very hit & miss.

here we go AGAIN

first for me it was stuff like -- beatles, abba, boney M etc... that was when i was about 7 and that was what my parents listened to.

then when i was about 10 it was stuff like -- doors, hendrix, pink floyd and nirvana -- this was what my older sister listened to ( 9 years older than me)

then at about 13 i finally had my own music, it was -- metallica, slayer, sepultura (as well as doors and nirvana)

at about 16 i added to my menu stuff like -- prodigy, crystal method, dmx, jay-z and sadly - club trance :(

at about 18 i heard astral projection ho ho ! and started trying all psy bands that got good reviews on this site. one of the first bands i tried was wizzy noise which i liked, and in its review i saw a word "minimal." i started searching for the magical "minimal" and although it took some getting used to at first i am now a minimal fan :))) at 20 that is.

omar santana rocks lysergic! I started listening to metal/hardcore to start, then i got into industrial, then hardcore (electronic), and then hard house... and now full on... hard house was minimal music... and i got sick of it... and that's why i listen to FULL on now, i need more than 1 thing going on at once... sorry guys. something that takes alittle talent...

Hey lifeform,

in minimal/progressive trance there IS more than one thing going on at once. And minimal trance also needs talents to sound good. I guess you haven't heard any good minimal songs when you say that. But i also enjoy some melodic goa trance (like eye am the i - chi ad, trip tonite - etnica, waves of sound - yahel) but they are classics. Melodic stuff must be really really good for me to enjoy it.

When I grew up ( age 6-10)Madonna and Michael jackson were very popular. By that time I listened to old stuff. I started with Elvis presley and than gradually got to the hippie 60/begin 70's music which I still think is wonderfull. When the whole 80's thing was over and things like Snap and 2 Unlimited entered I had a small flirt with them, b4 turning my back on that and listening to some oldschool rap and some punkstuff.

In the 90's I became a fan of punk and rock/metalmusic and I explored some other artists from the electro/industrial and gothic corner of music. After a while I stumbled upon the singer/songwriter stuff ( early Mercury Rev, Elliot Smith, Ben Harper) as well as some drum&bass ( goldie and later on dilinja, ed rush) and stayed there a few years. Then I had a small flirt with some classical stuff, especially some Rachmaninov-stuff... but I stayed kinda at my roots at this time.

Through drum and bass I came to explore different stuff like for instance the stuff on Ninja records ( Amon Tobin) and some other electronic stuff ( crystal method/prodigy ( which had caught my attention ever since Experience)).

The somewhere at the end of '96 my brother gave me a cd to listen like he had done a million times. I turned it on and I was amazed at the complexity and the structure. I was amazed at all these emotions in this music, the same thing that had drawn me to singer/songwriter stuff. This was goatrance and that cd was Goa Spaceship 101. I started to look for this wonderfull music by hunting down the artists on there, with no success initially. I bought Goa-Head 2 which had some classics like Doof's Let's Turn On on it and from that time on I doubled my effort in getting as much of it as possible ( and I still do).

I do listen to a lot of different stuff as well, with things like Blind Melon, Within Temptation, old Offspring ( I love these guys b4 they went for the money, Ignition is great !!!), Elliot Smith, Heather Nova, Tori Amos, Crystal Method, Prodigy, Low, Amon Tobin, too much to put here...

I don't like minimal, but that could be because of my varied background. I like some progressive stuff, especially at parties but it wouldn't be the same at home.

I especially like laidback stuff like psycraft-gravitech, ambient like shpongle/boards of canada/ autechre/orb, crossovers like Violet Vision and Shpongle in a sense, and full-on stuff like GMS ( not always), Skazi, Wizzy Noise... a lot. I dont like stuff like Green House Effect, Midimiliz or that sorta stuff ( not meaning it should be in the same category).Things I don't like, music that is meant to be funny like some Finnish stuff, it bores the hell out of me. It sounds like a childs try to be funny. I also dislike the whole eurotrance thing which has no emotion in it and when it does its artificial to me ( like Rank 1-Such is Life )
